t was an exciting summer in Michigan as we hosted the National Holstein Convention at the beginning of July and then enjoyed a great Michigan Dairy Expo. As a result, the champions of the All Michigan Holstein Show, the Great Lakes State Holstein Futurity and the Michigan Jersey Show grace the cover of this fall issue. Michigan Holstein Association First off, let me say thank you to all of the folks who worked tirelessly on the National Holstein Convention 2018. It was a team effort by so many people and as a fellow breeder, I am appreciative of all the work everyone put into making it a great event. I have heard many positive comments on the convention from people all over the country. The attendees enjoyed the resort and the Traverse City area. The four herds that rolled out the red carpet for the farm tours did a fantastic job of presenting their farms and the enthusiasm was just what we
needed in this time of low milk prices. I know that the states that are putting on conventions in the future are looking to replicate a couple of the events that we presented. The Cows 2 Careers event was well received, and Wisconsin will be doing a similar event for their Junior convention. Also, there were several positive comments on the Producer Row presentation and our Michigan Showcase. Looking ahead, we are planning our annual meeting in conjunction with the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference in Frankenmuth in February, and we will be hosting a guest speaker. Look for more details on that in the Winter issue of the magazine. As we set out for fall harvest, I hope you all have a successful season and be safe out there.

From Your President
As we head into fall, the Michigan Junior Holstein Association reminisces on a very busy and exciting summer. Between the 2018 National Holstein Convention, our annual meeting, and planning for the year ahead, MJHA has been in full swing. After lots of planning, the 2018 National Holstein Convention has come to a close. We would especially like to congratulate Connor Nugent on placing first in the senior Division of the Prepared Public Speaking Contest. Also, Miriah Dershem and Kristen Burkhardt for placing third in the Scrapbook Contest. The Michigan Junior Holstein Board can not thank everyone for the time that they put into the convention and their hard work. Our annual meeting was held on July 18th, where we elected five new members to the board. The new MJHA Board is Kristen Burkhardt as President, Miriah Dershem as Vice President, Anna Moser is Secretary, Skylar Buell is Treasurer. At-Large members are Keagan Long, Lila Howell, Miriam Cook, Beka McDonald, Ashton Geurink, and Ian Black. Our advisors are Louisa Westendorp, Tera Baker, Lauren Siv-

er, and Renee McCauley. As MJHA looks into the future, we are planning various activities for youth in the state of Michigan. Our next event will be our second annual cheese sale. Keep on the look out for more details to come on our Facebook page! We plan on running the sale through the month of November. The proceeds from this sale will go towards the youth that attend the 2019 National Holstein Convention! All in all, the Michigan Junior Holstein Association is moving into the fall with a lot of new and exciting events coming up. Thank you for your time,

Holstein Association USA is offering an opportunity for breeders to advertise Registered Holsteins® for sale via a page on the Holstein Association USA website. The new Holstein Marketplace provides easy, affordable advertising to help Registered Holstein breeders optimize their investment. Advertisements of up to 100 words will cost $25 per month. If the text is 101 words or more, the cost is $25 plus an additional 10 cents per word. For added value, breeders have the option of linking their advertisements to a genomic prediction or pedigree for $5 per animal. Links to a website or Facebook page can also be included in the ad. Advertisements will be invoiced to your Holstein Association USA account. Classified ads may be submitted by using the form found on the Holstein Marketplace website, www.holsteinusa. com/marketplace. Complete the form and email the information to marketplace@holstein.com.

Known as TriStar AMR, the goal of the program is to allow producers with robotic milking systems that are recording both milk weights and component data to have the information collected by those systems flow into the Holstein herdbook database. This program is an extension of HAUSA’s TriStar program, a longstanding service for administering production records, cow and herd genetic performance reports, and recognition. The fees to participate in TriStar AMR are a $17 per month herd fee, plus $2 per completed 305-day lactation recorded that is loaded for Registered Holstein® cows, which covers data collection and processing by ATA, and loading into the HAUSA herdbook system. TriStar AMR is not included in Holstein COMPLETE®, and at this time, AMR records are not eligible for recognition programs. To enroll in TriStar AMR or get more information about this new program, call Holstein Association USA customer service at 800.952.5200.

Michigan Jersey Cattle Club Hello All,
Fall Harvest and the Fall show season is upon us! I hope everyone has a safe and bountiful harvest and safe travels to any fall shows you may be attending. World Dairy Expo is here and right around the corner is the All American Jersey Show. I am not sure if there are any members from Michigan participating in either of the venues this year, but if you are good luck! Its been a fairly quiet year for the Jersey Club in Michigan in 2018, due to the tough economic times and not being able to put together a sale committee for 2018, we postponed the sale. The board is still looking for volunteers to head up the sale committee if anyone has any interest. This past summer our neighbors to the south, Ohio, hosted the National Jersey Convention. I am not sure who from Michigan attended, but I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the convention, if any of you attended. The board will have met by the time you read this to discuss many exciting and possibly new opportunities that may arise for Michigan Jersey Cattle Club in the next few years to come. We will also be deciding on our annual meeting and get that information out to you very soon.

2018 MHA And the winning photo is… Photo Contest We’re kicking off our third Michigan Holstein Association (MHA) membership photo contest. Send in your photosof your herd favorites, kids with cows, new arrivals, etc… These are photos you took; not professional photos. Photos should capture the Holstein cow/ calf in all her glory. All winners will be notified and will be given credit in our magazine. One grand prize winner will receive a prize valued at $100 and have his/her photo published in the magazine. To enter: • You must be a MHA member • All entries must be postmarked by November 15, 2018. • Photo may have either landscape (horizontal) or vertical orientation. *Only vertical photos can be used on the cover of the magazine. • You may submit up to four photos for consideration. • Entries must be submitted as an 8x10 print or a 300dpi or greater digital photo via email or on a disc. Final resolution eligibility will be determined by MHA. Digital photos should be saved as JPEG, TIF or BMP.

Baker Awarded the Rumler Scholarship Tera Baker, Three Oaks, Michigan, was awarded the 2018 Robert H. Rumler MBA Scholarship at the National Holstein Convention held recently in Traverse City, Michigan. Baker works to connect cutting edge feeding technology with farm level production. Recently, she was promoted to the sales manager of livestock products for Topcon Agriculture Americas. Baker is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Central Michigan University.

Green-Meadow Lauren-ET, Green Meadow Farms, Elsie, MI Once a fancy affair, with leadsmen dressed in special attire, the Great Lakes State Holstein Futurity holds a special place in a Registered Holstein breeder’s heart. “At one time, the Futurity was the most prestigious class of the show,” remarked Paul Meyer of Rod-er-Dic Farm. He continued, “Winning meant you could breed good cows, pick them out as calves, and get them ready, once you got to the show. It meant you were a pretty good cowman and it was quite an honor.” Renee McCauley of Tumbleweed Holsteins concurred, “Breeding cows that are productive and fit the mold of a show ring style cow is a challenge, but to see that potential in a calf and then
develop that calf to exhibit in a class at three years of age is a feat.” So, what is a futurity? The Great Lakes State Holstein Futurity was awarded for the first time in 1986 and created to stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of Registered Holsteins in Michigan. A breeder can enter a calf with an initial payment and then is required to make three more payments to keep the animal eligible to show in the three-year-old futurity class at the All-Michigan Holstein Show. The entry money goes into the futurity purse and is awarded to the top 25 entries in that futurity class. This year, Star Summit Farm won the futurity class for the eighth time since its inception, “I enjoy entering the futurity for the challenge.” Baker continued, “It’s fun to pick and choose Continued on Page 17 15

the calves as they are born and watch them grow to maturity. And it’s exciting to watch them in the show ring, knowing that cow is a result of your breeding program and that’s very rewarding.” McCauley also feels the futurity is good for breeder involvement, “Futurity classes are good for breed associations as it stresses the involvement of the breeder from early on in a calf ’s life.” She continued, “The futurity is something our family has supported dating back to when the first futurities
were held at the Michigan State Fair.” McCauley grew up under the Nugentdale Farm prefix, and over the years they have won the futurity four times. This year they exhibited the winning junior entry as the next generation of the family carried on the tradition. She commented, “Continuing that tradition is important to our family. We also place a lot of emphasis on cow families. Nominations for futurity eligible calves stems from cow families that we trust and are developing.” “Being a part of the futurity for as many years as we have been feels

great. It’s an honor each time we win. It’s exciting to see our long-standing cow families continue to do well and we only hope that we can continue to bring great cows to the show ring in the future.” Tim Baker continued, “Even if you have never entered in the futurity before, I encourage everyone to take a chance and enter. You might have a futurity winner standing in that calf hutch, you just never know.” The 36th annual futurity class is now open for entries and more information can be found on page 21.

Holstein Youth Schooled in Careers at National Convention

By Bev Berens Youth Holstein enthusiasts gathered alongside adults during the 2018 National Holstein Convention held in Traverse City June 29 – July 3. Cows to Careers was a first-time event during the Monday youth luncheon, which featured recruiters from a variety of two and four-year educational institutes and a panel discussion covering topics from career prep to interviews. Jennie Koebel and Tara Baker organized the luncheon session. “This is the first Cows to Careers event,” said Josh Hushon, panel moderator. “An event zeroing in on career education in the cattle industry was a hole in the Holstein Convention, and is a perfect opportunity to talk with kids about possibilities both on the farm and in industry.” Hushon serves as Marketing and Communication Lead for Dairy and Beef with Cargill. A Pennsylvania native, he and his brothers were recognized as National Outstanding Young Breeders in the Brown Swiss breed. He is also a Holstein Foundation Trustee. Dr. Joe Domecq discussed cow-side opportunities as Hushon’s first guest. “Working with cows doesn’t mean you have to go back to your own farm or maybe you don’t even Fall 2018
have a farm to return home to after college,” Domecq said. “There are endless numbers of opportunities for working with cows and I get calls weekly from farm owners looking for good people.” Often, the work on farms will be in a specialized area like fresh cow, calf and heifer or parlor management. People with a passion for their work will always be in demand according to Domecq. “The biggest
complaint I hear from employers is about employees who aren’t passionate about cows and the dairy industry or their job,” Domecq said. Following Domecq’s report, a four-person panel of industry professionals contributed with information on topics ranging from job shadowing, interviewing, preparing for a career, selecting a career that aligns with personal interests and abilities and how to act during an interview. Tom Nugent, Director of Human Resources with Michigan Farm Bureau, Elizabeth Marvel, PAS with Milk Specialties Global, Dr. Brian Lammers, Ph.D., PAS with ADM Animal Nutrition and Carol Webb were the panel experts. A ride-along or job shadow is a good way to see a day on the job for a given career. Lammers recalled a ride-along student who thought that dairy nutrition was their appropriate career path. However, the person didn’t like science, and the ride along convinced the individual that another dairy related career would be a better fit. Marvel’s job often entails lengthy travel periods between farm stops. One ride-along guest realized that extensive daily drives wasn’t a good personal fit and that is a valid concern to consider during the job search. Continued on Page 26

PURPOSE: The Michigan Holstein Association instigates this Futurity to stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of Registered Holsteins in Michigan. The very nature of the Futurity recognizes the accomplishments of the small and large breeder, the FFA and 4-H youth, and is open to any Michigan Holstein Association member. PROCEDURES: The first nomination must be made by the owner of the calf at birth. Four nominations are required for each animal that competes. All nominations are the responsibility of the owner. Dates, fees and rules will be followed to the letter. Monies received from the four nominations, plus donations, less the advertising and bookkeeping costs, shall make up the total purse of the Futurity. All monies shall be paid out in each Futurity. ELIGIBILITY: Any Registered Holstein female, bred by a Michigan breeder and owned by a Michigan Holstein Association member whose birth date falls between September 1, 2017 and August 31, 2018 is eligible for the Great Lakes State Holstein Futurity #36. For first nominations, an animal may have papers pending; however, on succeeding nominations registration numbers must be available. FEES: Entries must be postmarked on or before and paid by these dates 1st payment of $2.50 with nomination shall be paid by November 15, 2018 Late entry of $2.50 plus $2.50 late entry fee with nomination shall be paid by April 15, 2019. 2nd payment of $5.00 with nomination shall be paid by April 15, 2019 3rd payment of $7.50 with nomination shall be paid by April 15, 2020 Final payment of $10.00 with nomination shall be paid by April 15, 2021 PURSE: The purse in this event shall consist of all monies received by the Great Lakes State Holstein Futurity as nomination fees, subsequent payments and contributions, less actual expenses incurred in its promotion and management. All Futurity monies shall be kept in a separate Futurity Fund and used only for Futurity purposes, and shall be withdrawn only under the bona fide signature of the treasurer of the Futurity, with the approval of the Futurity committee. The purse will be divided among the first 25 Futurity placings.
REFUNDS: When nomination fees and subsequent payments in connection with the Futurity are received they are committed to the purse for this event and no refunds will be made. In the event that any condition should arise which prevents the showing of the Futurity, the right is reserved to cancel same and enter the remaining funds to the general account of the Michigan Holstein Association, less the actual expenses incurred. MAINTAINING ELIGIBILITY: Eligibility after an animal has been nominated as a calf is maintained by making subsequent payments on the due dates as specified. This responsibility rest solely with the owner, and failure to do so cancels eligibility and all previous fees become a part of the purse. SALE OF FUTURITY ANIMALS: When an animal that is entered in the GREAT LAKES STATE HOLSTEIN FUTURITY is sold, the eligibility may be maintained by the new owner and it shall be his responsibility to inform the Futurity treasurer of the change in ownership. The seller shall inform the buyer that the animal purchased is already entered in the Futurity and it will be the responsibility of the buyer to submit subsequent fees in accordance with the rules and closing dates. SHOW ELIGIBILITY: Any animal in the GREAT LAKES STATE HOLSTEIN FUTURITY will be eligible for the open or youth class competition in its age class at the host show. The Futurity winner and the second place animal shall compete in the open championship class at the host show. First place youth entries shall be eligible to compete in the youth championship class at the host show. MISCELLANEOUS: The Michigan Holstein Association nor the Great Lakes State Holstein Futurity is in no way responsible for the condition of the premises on which the Futurity is held and is not liable in the event of accident or loss to persons or property. All matters pertaining to the showing of the Futurity are subject to the rules, regulation and health requirements of the show at which the Futurity is held. Nugent advised youth to be attentive and put away the phone during a ride along. “It’s like a mini-interview that could lead to future job connections,” he said. “Dress appropriately; bring boots if you will be on farms, or business-casual if making sales calls or in an office.” Business-casual dress, according to Nugent, includes a shirt with collar (no t-shirts), slacks or skirt, casual shoes (no sneakers), and a tie or jacket if appropriate. “It’s ok to ask what to wear, and the person you are riding with would rather have you ask in advance than to come unprepared,” he said. Is it 100% necessary? No. But college and my job as a professor is to present doors to you. College gives you more doors to open.
