on the cover...

In 1953, the Michigan Holstein-Friesian Association handed over a check for $400 to the dairy judging team that was about to travel overseas for a judging trip. That is shown on the cover of the May 1953 issue of the Holstein Michigander. That support continues today as MHA proudly underwrites the endeavors of our young people as they learn how to evaluate cattle through the judging programs in Michigan. Ironic enough, the heifer on the cover was held by the son of then Indiana Holstein Association President, Newton Wright. Michigan and Indiana have been doing business together for decades and we continue to support one another as breeders of both states use the Michigan Dairy Cattle News to market their genetics. If you are picking up this issue at the National Holstein Convention, we welcome you to our states and point you to the spring show and sale results. We also have the second annual Golden Opportunity Tickets that are now available for purchase. See the details of how the raffle works and the heifers entered in the raffle on page 10.

From the MHA President Reed ’s Ramblings

Hello there,

Well, I’ve had three months to get this column written. It’s the last day and here I am trying to get a printable article to Melissa, just like the book reports that I had to do as a kid. I would be given a month or two to read the book and write the paper. The teacher would tell us to read 10 pages every day so we’d have a week to write the report. Sounds great, simple, I think anyone can do that. But not me, I might read the first chapter. Now I’m faced with trying to get something done. Grade be damned, get a paper on the desk. That’s my task now.

Anyhow, things at the Michigan Holstein Association are coming along nicely. In March, we had a quality spring show with about 120 head entered. Chris Lahmers did a good job working the ring and finding the cows he liked. Congratulations to the Westendorp Family for going home with the Grand Champion, and to the Rupprecht and Gebert families for Reserve Grand Champion.

We have some wonderful events ahead this summer. The 2023 National Holstein Convention is June 23–27 in Lexington, Kentucky. I am looking forward to it and hope to see many of you there.

The 2023 Michigan Dairy Expo is taking place at the Michigan State University Pavilion, July 17–July 21. After much success last

year, we have once again taken nominations for Golden Ticket Opportunity calves. The Golden Ticket Opportunity raffle helps fund our organization, shows, and junior members’ activities. I am looking forward to seeing calves that received nominations and will be buying a few tickets for my grandkids. The drawing takes place on Friday, July 21 during a break between the heifer and cow show. It’s a great opportunity to build on this organization’s success.

The MHA show committee is working with Dr. Joe Domecq and his MSU judging team to put together the 4-H and All-Michigan shows. The 4-H show takes place on Tuesday, July 18 and the All-Michigan show is Friday, July 21. As part of our partnership, we have committed $5000.00 to the MSU judging team to participate in a trip to Europe. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it’s our privilege to support these youth.

Melissa, here is my first book report! I’m hoping for a “B” but I’m happy with a solid “C”.

All of life is peaks and valleys. Don’t let the peaks get too high and the valleys too low. John Wooden

From Your President Michigan Junior Holstein News

The Michigan Junior Holstein Association is looking forward to a fun and busy summer! This summer we are planning an educational dairy fun day, National Holstein Convention trip, Dairy Days, adult showmanship, and our annual meeting. There are so many exciting opportunities!

But first we would like to reflect on a great spring show. MJHA hosted an adult showmanship clinic and it was a big success! Thank you to the MHA board for helping us organize this event. And thank you to everyone who participated or nominated someone to compete in this fundraiser for the juniors!

The 2023 National Holstein Convention is quickly approaching at the end of June. This year it is hosted in Lexington, KY from June 23rd through the 27th. We have a group of Michigan youth that will be participating in Dairy Bowl and Prepared Public Speaking contests. This is also an excellent opportunity to meet dairy industry leaders around the nation and this event gives the youth in our state an experience that they will never forget. We are looking forward to a fun trip and great convention!

Michigan Dairy Days and summer show are not far away as we look into July. We will be hosting another adult showmanship clinic at summer show and conducting our annual meeting, with funfilled activities for juniors in between. At our annual meeting we will have updates and be electing new board members. Please reach out if you have any questions or interest in joining the board. We are looking forward to all of the upcoming events we have planned this summer!

Thank you for your time,

Adalee Thelen President MJHA

Notes From the Field Mandi’s Memo

THE INCREDIBLE HOLSTEIN COW

Holstein cows are truly amazing! In the first half of 2023, not one but two U.S. Registered Holstein cows have set the record for most Lifetime Milk. This impressive accomplishment shows the efficiency, longevity, and potential of our beloved Holstein cow.

In February it was announced that Chrome-View Charles 3044 topped the record for most lifetime milk produced by a Holstein cow. The record-breaking cow is owned by Mason’s Chrome View farm in Nottingham, Pennsylvania.

The 13-year-old Registered Holstein® cow is in her tenth lactation and broke the record with her lifetime milk production record of 478,200 pounds of milk, 14,447 pounds of fat, and 12,576 pounds of protein and counting. Her lifetime milk production total would also feed 10 people for over 80 years, if each person had the daily requirement of 3 servings of milk per day.

The record set by Chrome-View Charles 3044 was recently surpassed by Nor-Bert Colby Connie, owned by Nor-Bert Farms in Bremen, Indiana. Nor-Bert Colby Connie achieved this incredible feat with her lifetime milk production record of 486,300 pounds through her latest completed lactation. Connie has calved again and is continuing to add to the record total.

Connie has equally impressive numbers for components, with a lifetime record of 27,062 pounds of fat and 17,737 pounds of protein through her last completed lactation. These tremendous fat and protein totals are currently the highest lifetime totals for fat and protein in the Holstein Association USA database.

For many years, the Registered Holstein cow has been known

as the most efficient producer of high-quality milk. Nor-Bert Colby Connie has fed an impressive amount of people in her lifetime. These calculations help put her lifetime milk production total into perspective.

Nor-Bert Colby Connie 478,200’s pound lifetime milk production record total is equivalent to:

• 56,547 gallons of milk

• 904,744 cups of milk

• 48,630 pounds of cheese1

• Enough cheese for 129,680 twelve-inch pizzas2

• 603,168 scoops of ice cream3

• 22,939 pounds of butter4

Having two cows achieve this incredible record in such a short amount of time is a testament to the genetic improvement of the Holstein breed, and everything she can achieve when cared for well. It’s the dedication, hard work, and effort put in by all our Registered Holstein breeders over the years that make achievements like this possible.

As we enter June Dairy Month, the stories of these two cows and the people they’ve fed in their lifetime are a great example of how the entire dairy industry is becoming more efficient and sustainable, thanks to U.S. Registered Holstein cows. As you tell your own dairy story in the coming months, consider sharing these fun numbers about just how many people one cow has the potential to feed!

Adam Preston

Adam Preston of Preston Farms in Quincy took home the Wayne Webster Outstanding Young Breeder award from the Michigan Holstein Association’s annual meeting.

He is thankful for the opportunity to farm and uphold the legacy that began when his great-grandparents and grandparents moved from a tenant farm in 1942 to establish the present operation, which has grown from a dozen cows to 1,000 genetically superior animals that continuously put the Preston name on the map.

Adam farms with his parents, Glenn and Susie Preston, uncle and aunt Keith and Paula Preston and cousin Brian and his wife, Carrie. Adam is married to Crystal, whom he describes as the most supportive wife he could ask for and who happens to be “an excellent listener.” They have three children, Alec, Aiden and Avery, who are in the early stages of 4-H dairy careers.

The farm’s first parlor was built in the 1970s, and the family has continued to add on since. “We’ve been able to keep adding ground to have a larger land base to raise all of our corn and forage requirements,” Adam said. “That’s huge. We also bought another farm that came with 600 free-stalls. We now raise our heifers there, and they are all under our own control. It’s very beneficial.”

His gateway into dairy farming began as a youngster and was fueled by 4-H projects. “One Sunday morning my favorite cow was calving, and Mom let me stay home from church to help deliver the calf; that was pretty huge,” he recalled. He credits his father for getting him involved early on and allowing him to select some of the bulls used in artificial insemination (A.I.).

He put that experience to good use through 4-H, which led to MSU Dairy Tech and dairy judging. “There were some good times on the road with Joe [Domecq], and judging all over Michigan and in Canada,” Adam said. The experience earned him the runner-up title for his judging division in Madison that year.

The farm has diligently worked with Select Sires to improve the 100 percent reg-

istered herd using ET, genomics, classification, DHI, Holstein Tags, Holstein Complete and Easy. Within the herd, there are 20 Excellent cows, with three at 92 points. Hundreds of cows are VG, with eight USDA Elite cows on the top 10,000 list, 63 on the USDA Elite Cow Genomic List and 32 on the Elite Locater List. Several bulls have left the farm to enter A.I. and claim local bragging rights with several Grand Champions

at the fair.

Preston Farms has also earned milk quality awards and will receive the Progressive Genetic Herd award for the seventh time.

In 2016, Preston Farms became a partner herd with Select Sires as one of the nation’s six Aggressive Reproductive Technologies, or ART, herds. Between 350-400

females on the farm are implanted with embryos owned by Select Sires each year.

Brent Beeker, the farm’s Select Sires representative, helped get the herd involved with the program.

“It’s fun to have very elite animals around that benefit Select and us. They get the bulls and the reproductive rights, while we retain the animals and milk,” Adam explained. “It’s been a fun distraction, with how depressed the dairy industry is, to have something fun to look forward to.”

He has enjoyed being part of the story of SSI PR Renegade, a Holstein International Outcross Sire of the Year and part of the ART Program born at the farm. “When Jeff Ziegler called to say he was the Number One bull in the breed, I asked him when he could come and get him because I didn’t want the responsibility of having him around!”

One of Adam’s favorite cows, Wolford Durham Lue, produced a prolific family. She was purchased from Beeker as a club calf and eventually developed into a Gold Medal Dam. Her granddaughter, Preston Moscow Lulu, scored 88 points and yielded

more than 250,000 pounds Lifetime milk. Lulu’s grandson was sold to Select Sires and became a popular Super Sampler and ended up with more than 3,000 daughters.

“This homebred female has left us with a lot of generations in the barn and given us a whole lot of fun,” Adam pointed out.

Another standout is S-S-I PR 9494 5716, who came to the farm as an embryo, developed into an 88-point cow and generated a 3-03 365D 37,081M 5.0 1871F 3.7P. She became a donor dam and one of her daughters, 23054, held the title for top GTPI cow in April 2022. Both the sire and dam of this female were born at Preston Farms.

Max Dunseth praised Adam not only for his success with the farm and its genetic program, but also as a human being: “He is a great young man who is dedicated to God, family, farm and his community.”

Adam’s primary farm goal is just to continue farming and stay in business, leaving the legacy of a viable opportunity for the next generation to come back and farm with family if they so desire.

Preston Farms began in 1942 but it was with turkeys, not cows. Shown here are Adam’s grandfather Stanley and great grandfather Henry Preston who moved from a tenant farm to establish Preston Farms. Submitted photo The Preston family has hosted ice cream socials and farm tours over the years providing friends and neighbors an opportunity to learn more about agriculture. Submitted photo

In the past year, considering the move, I culled my herd and the remaining animals are a solid group that are moveable out of state. No young stock will sell at this time. If you are interested in embryos or young stock, please contact Gordon.

We plan to classify again in May so stay tuned. Currently we average between 82-85 lbs 2X RHA: 25,782 4.0 BF 3.2 P Days in Milk 160, Herd age is 39 months.

Well balanced, milk in the tank, bred back on first service, marked to succeed. Sold as lot 36 in the Ohio Spring Sale!

We welcome you to the farm or we will offer Cowbuyer online bidding or by phone with good folks in the dairy industry.

And with red, Swingman, Rager, Macho, Diamondback, Rex, Webster, and cows out of Salvator sons, he has put his mark on the breed!

Overall, they seem like “whisper in the ear” cows. You take them to your herd, give them good feed, treat them with common sense, and in a lot of your barns, with bigger stalls, better air flow, better traffic patterns, these cows should do better than they do in my facilities.

very much to the bidders at the GTPI Sale, our first choice from Lot 23 sold well. A very special thank you to our crew at the Ohio Spring Sale, you did very well getting Lot 6 and Lot 36 ready for auction! The result was Well Done.

Gary Wieber

Gary

was presented with the the 2023 Michigan Holstein Association Master Breeder Award at the MHA annual meeting in February. He farms in partnership with his brother, Ken and together they have welcomed their nephew, Nolan into the operation located in Fowler. The herd consists of 125 Registered Holsteins, and they grow corn, alfalfa, wheat, and black beans.

The farm was in Holstein Association, USA’s Top 25 BAA list for the 120- to 250cow herd size. With a BAA of 107.1, the Wieber’s herd has an RHA of 27,000M, 3.8 % fat and 3.1 % protein. For more than 20 years, the herd has received Quality awards from Michigan Milk Producers Association, and the brothers have had registered cattle for at least three decades.

Gary takes pride in the breeding program that generates the 27,000 RHA and strong classifications seen throughout the herd. “My first classification, I had only one 85-point cow, and we worked up from there. Now, if I have a three-year-old below 80 points, I’m disappointed,” he noted.

Retired Holstein Association, USA representative Max Dunseth nominated Wieber and said, “He’s done a fantastic job of breeding a great herd of cows. He is very deserving of this award.”

Holstein Complete, DHI, Holstein Tags, Easy program, some genomic testing and classifying at every opportunity are components of their cow management program. The breeding program has produced 300 VG and 36 Excellent cows - one at 93 points, four at 92 and eight at 91, along with three Dam of Merit cows. Wieber has done some showing and is a regular contributor to Holstein Association consignment sales.

When choosing sires, Wieber’s focus is on good conformation and strong type, and he believes this strong conformation builds milk production and longevity. “I hardly ever use high-milk bulls,” he said. “I use high-type bulls from classified cows. If a bull is out of a cow lower than an 85 score, I don’t use them. I prefer at least a couple generations of 92 or 93 score on the dam’s side.”

Recent favorite bulls include Diamondback, Drop Box and Tattoo. Durham is an example of a bull he used to sire females that naturally combined production and longevity. One Durham daughter at the farm reached 200,000 pounds of lifetime milk.

“I started using bulls with low SCS, like Crush and Doorman. We are having cows with lower SCS now. If cows have produced a lot of milk but have high SCS scores, they aren’t useful, and we have to get rid of them,” he explained. “And a bonus is that Doorman daughters seem to have good dispositions.”

Number 484 is a Duster daughter that rises to the top as his favorite cow, and cow family. She produced six daughters, some of which were bred to Outside. Three Outside daughters achieved in excess of 200,000 pounds lifetime milk - one over 300,000and one daughter scored Excellent. “I probably have 20 or more milking females in the

herd that I can trace back to her, and that is without any ET work. I’ve got fifth generations of her offspring in milk and I’m working on the sixth generation,” Wieber said. “Outside was a great bull.”

He enjoys the variety of jobs he faces on the dairy farm each day, along with being on the lookout for the next strong bulls to join the arsenal. A tool he plans to use more frequently is genomic testing, just to see if there is something more hidden in the herd: “You never know until you test.

“A lifetime of working towards high production and high type comes to fruition with this award,” Wieber said. “It is very satisfying to be recognized by your fellow dairymen. I have looked up to so many people that were on the list of Master Breeders before me. I am very humbled to have my name added to the list.”

She was an elementary teacher until she married her husband of fifty-five years, Velmar. Margaret was the matriarch of Green Meadow Farms for many years. She loved driving tractor, tilling the soil, and driving truck during harvest. For many years you could find her dog, Whiskey, by her side. Most of all she liked working along-side the other employees. Margaret was an avid gardener and took great pride in her flowers and lawn. For many years she mowed the farm lawns and enjoyed waving as neighbors went by on Hollister Road. During Christmastime, you could see her house from miles away as she would decorate the yard in Christmas lights.

She was a groundbreaker in regards to it being acceptable for women being involved in farming and was an original member of Ford Tractor Women’s Council. Margaret and Velmar were inducted into the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame in 2017. Margaret had many interests during her life and played piano for many years at the Elsie United

Methodist Church until arthritis made it impossible for her to continue.

In spite of her mobility issues she traveled extensively with Velmar to his numerous dairy meetings, and later they developed a hobby of cruising, traveling, and seeing the world. During her later years they greatly appreciated traveling with their grandson Justin and their great nephew Ben. She also enjoyed winters in Marco Island, Florida, walking the beach when she could, picking up shells. The last few years she rode her mobility scooter around her condo complex spraying weeds and talking with residents. First and foremost she was a farm wife raising her family, being a great cook, and always welcoming Margery’s and Craig’s friends to be a part of the family. She was a true farmer through the end of her life as she tilled the soil at age 83 last fall for this year’s crop planting. She greatly appreciated Dr. Huff’s care and compassion shown throughout the years. His care over the last twenty years allowed her to continue to lead a full and productive life despite her mobility issues. The family also greatly appreciated the care Margaret received in her final days by HomeJoy and Memorial Healthcare Hospice.

She is predeceased by her parents, Charles Sayre Gill and Freda Belle Bates Gill, one sister Margery Mae Henderson, infant daughter Jennifer, and son-in-law Wayne Webster, brother-in-law, Duane Green.
