or the first time Michigan included all breeds in the Great Lakes Spring Show line up. The turn out was encouraging as entries were up across the board. The Grand Champion Jersey was Blackview Valentino Fancy exhibited by Blackview Jerseys. See all the results from the spring show in this issue along with the Membership Directories. I look forward to a great summer as our show season gets underway. From the smallest county fair to the Michigan Dairy Expo, I wish everyone good luck!

Michigan Holstein Association It’s hard to believe it was a year ago when we were getting geared up for the National Holstein Convention in Traverse City. This year, Wisconsin will take a turn and I hope you enjoy the 2019 convention souvenir book included in our magazine. I hope Wisconsin has a great convention and if you have any concerns, please contact our delegates, Doug Westendorp, Jess Jakubik or myself, who will be your voice at the HAUSA annual meeting. The All-Michigan Summer show is coming up and I encourage everyone to exhibit and/or attend. This industry needs a glimmer of hope and being involved in the MHA allows us to be around others who appreciate the Registered Holstein cow and just enjoy talking about cows. Another chance to talk cows and even purchase some Michigan Holstein genetics is the District VII Summer picnic and video sale. Joe Kulhawick and the gang will open their farmgate to everyone on August 10th for a lunch at noon and a sale at 1 pm, at Bosscher Dairy in McBain. They are taking consignments for the sale and will be selling a few live lots as well. If you have a prospect for this sale, contact Mark Bontekoe at 231-510-0764. I hear Joe is

4

challenging everyone to a round of golf before the picnic. So, if you’re up for the challenge give Joe Kulhawick a holler at 231-825-8098. Keep moving forward and be proud of what you have accomplished in this industry. I look forward to seeing you all at the summer events.

Michigan Junior Holstein News

From Your President

The Michigan Junior Holstein Association (MJHA) is eager to dive into one of our favorite times of the year…summer! This being our busy season, it is always exciting to have events where we can connect with the youth in our state and network with juniors around the nation. The 2019 National Holstein Convention is one event in particular that MJHA is always looking forward to. Knowing that this is an excellent opportunity to meet dairy industry leaders around the nation, this event also gives the youth in our state an experience that they will never forget. During this season, our board members travel around the state to host showmanship and fitting clinics. If you are interested in having a hands-on workshop to help prepare for the upcoming show season, don’t forget to get ahold of MJHA! This allows our board to interact with the youth in our state and keep everyone up to date on the newest showmanship and fitting tips. We will be hosting our annual meeting during the week of Michigan Dairy Days. Please join us on Wednesday, July 17 at 5:00 for board elections, updates, and to get your show shirts. After the conclusion of the meeting, join us for a fun filled night planned by the board.

All in all, as we enter into a busy season, the Michigan Junior Holstein Association is looking forward to the opportunities this time will bring. We wish you all the best of luck! Thanks for your time,

Kristen Burkhardt President MJHA

Notes From the Field

Max’ & Mandi’s Memo

Beef, Dairy Collaboration Launches HOLSimTM Program The American Simmental Association (ASA) and Holstein Association USA (HAUSA) have announced the formation of the HOLSimTM branded program. The program identifies elite SimAngusTM bulls with specific production attributes as mating solutions for dairy producers who breed some of their herd to beef. The program’s objective is threefold: to provide additional revenue to dairy producers through the production of valueadded terminal calves; to offer new marketing avenues for progressive beef seedstock operations; and to offer a consistent supply of high-quality calves better situated to capture market premiums. To qualify for the program, all animals must have a Registered Holstein® dam, and be bred to SimAngus bulls identified through the IGS Feeder Profit Calculator. The HOLSim program is the first of its kind and offers dairy farmers a unique opportunity to build new profit centers. Those wanting to learn more can visit holsteinusa.com, or contact Darin Johnson at 802.451.4048, or by email. djohnson@ holstein.com. All-National Showcase Program Holstein Association USA announces an exciting new award recognizing U.S. Registered Holstein® cows and their

6 6

owners for exceptional performance at National Holstein Shows. The All-National Showcase Program is designed to add value to Registered Holstein cattle and reward their participation in National Shows. Full details on the AllNational Showcase Program rules and point system can be found at www.holsteinusa.com/showcase. New Online Transfer System Holstein Association USA is excited to announce a new online system available for transfer applications at www. holsteinusa.com. Users will experience an updated, user friendly interface along with newly added features. For a video tutorial of the new online transfer system, visit our website. As always, don’t hesitate to call your Regional Sales Representative if you’re interested in learning more about Holstein programs and services.

From the Jersey Desk

Michigan Jersey Cattle Club

Hi All, I hope this finds you all doing well. I believe Mother Nature is finally letting up and allowing us to accomplish a few things. After a frustrating spring, I hope all of your crops are in and continue to go well through the rest of the summer and allow for a bountiful crop in the fall. By now I’m sure everyone has their show prospects picked out for the summer and getting them dialed in for summer show and county fairs. We aren’t far off from the show at this point. A few things I have been thinking about with Michigan bred Jerseys is that there are, and continues to be, top quality animals throughout the state. Something each and everyone of you should be proud of! I would like to Congratulate Amber Black on breeding and exhibiting the Intermediate and Grand Champion of the Great Lakes Spring Show, along with Senior Champion & Reserve Grand--what an accomplishment! One week later, this same Grand cow went on to win Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion of Spring Dairy Expo Jersey Show in Columbus, for her new owners Kevin Doeberiener and Lindsay Bowen. The Jersey excitement doesn’t stop there, last fall the Reed family exhibited the Reserve All-American December Calf, which they bred with their partners, Drew and Beth Rupprecht, who also sold a calf at the Summer Splash Sale last year that was third at World Dairy Expo! If these are not exciting things for Michigan and Michigan Jersey breeders, I don’t know what is! Hats-off to all of you on your accomplishments. By the time you read this, you all have probably heard

that I made one of the toughest decisions of my Jersey career. As of the 9th of May, I sold the Jersey herd to focus more on our new endeavors that are on the horizon. This decision was not an easy one and was not taken lightly. A lot of discussion and deliberation went into this tough choice. I made the decision to sell the cows as things changed here on the farm. With the expansion of our dairy operation, I was not able to dedicate the time that I felt necessary to continue down the path in which I wanted to take Brenhaven Jerseys. So, with that being said, this industry is forever changing and NONE of US know what challenges may step in front of us. I do believe there are still some exciting times ahead for the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club. As the board continues to think outside the box, I urge each of us to keep moving the Club in a positive direction. While it may seem like a daunting challenge given our current dairy economy, it’s not impossible when everyone gets involved. I hope to see all of you this July at the summer show! Until Next Time,

Brent Moyer

NATIONAL HOLSTEIN CONVENTION - 63

Creation of Parker Hardy PPS Technology & Design

...And Better then Ever Before! After a little over a year of solid, no-stop construction, Hardys Holsteins has been Remodeled from top to bottom. On January 15th we turned to the next chapter in our long history book and started two of the eight robots planned for this new barn. After a long year of traveling to various farms taking care of our cattle the ladies of Hardys Holsteins have arrived to their final destination, HOME! We are wrapping up the finishing touches to the office/Tour Center and beginning to plan for our Barn Raising Party and open house to show off the new barn and Thank everyone that helped us along the way through our journey. Stay tuned to hear the final date. We look forward to hosting a day of fun and laughter!

Cheers to New Beg innings!

Michigan Good Food Fund

By Carla Wardin EAST LANSING - Ice cream window. Artisan cheese. Take and make meals. Agritourism. Dairy farms have many options for diversifying a business, and the Michigan Good Food Fund is designed to help. The Michigan Good Food Fund (MGFF) provides financing to food enterprises that benefit communities in need. MGFF’s stated goal is to fund “healthy food production, distribution, processing, and retail projects that benefit underserved communities in Michigan.” Though the fund has worked with grocery stores, restaurants, and non-profit organizations, the MGFF is working to expand their reach with the people directly growing and raising the food. “This is the first time in the country that we’re working directly with farmers,” said Jamie Rahrig, Michigan Good Food Fund Specialist and Innovation Counselor. “In the year since I started with MGFF, we have begun ramping up our connections with producers.” For instance, Vicki and Tom Zil-

ke secured a $30,000 loan to transition Zilke Vegetable Farm from a stand to a year-round retail space, plus kitchen facility. “Vicki Zilke wanted to start a graband-go pickup store, and she was able to finance that through the MGFF,” Rahrig said. The Zilke business venture will increase access to produce, create jobs, and form opportunities for other area farmers. “Being vegetable farmers, with the sales coming just in the summer season, we needed a value added product – especially in this changing environment,” said owner Vicki Zilke. “The Michigan Good Food Fund’s support has been essential and phenomenal. They have helped with everything from the loan closing to providing continued support through marketing, financials, labeling, and website development. They have been able to find resources and match me with the right people that can help.” Zilke said that not only does the MGFF help with the actual business side of things, but the organization also has the same goals.

Have You Herd?

F MSU’s Dr. Joe Domecq was recently featured in Hoard’s Dairyman for the impact he has had on animal science students, specifically youth interested in dairy in Michigan. He has been MSU for nearly 30 years and has not only built a successful dairy judging program, he has been instrumental in keeping youth involved and excited about the dairy industry. F Larsen Farms of Scottville had an exciting event in April as one of their cows gave birth to a set of triplet heifers. The event defied the odds as they range from 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 400,000 chances of all heifer triplets born healthy. The farm reports the 20

calves and the cow are all doing well. F Michigan Dairy Expo open show entries are due June 29. Follow our MHA Facebook page for online information. F Ashley Kennedy of Bad Axe was recently featured on a science program called “Tomorrow’s World Today.” The show features how technology and sustainability work together. The film crew went to the robotic dairy for a closer look at the technology on modern dairy farms. Kennedy expressed how fun it was to share their operation with the rest of the world. You can read more about Ashley Kennedy’s life on the farm at her blog messykennedy.com.

“The Michigan Good Food Fund shares the same values we have, which is to share food that’s green, healthy, sustainable, and accessible. It’s really a great mission fit. They really understand all the parts of the business, from the many sectors of the value chain, from bankers to small business development to healthy communities. I have nothing but positive things to say about it,” Zilke said. In addition to loans, the MGFF offers no-cost training to help people prepare for financing and also grow their businesses. By making these investments, the MGFF hopes to increase access to healthy food, improve health, and encourage economic development. “We try to help businesses get all the documentation in place. We have someone who helps with financial projections, business plan writing, licensing, insurance, and all of the documents that loan officers ask borrowers to complete. We make sure you’re ready to go,” Rahrig said. Another form of technical assistance the MGFF offers is a bootcamp class that focuses on marketing, financials, and solving business challenges. “It’s a very intensive class,” Rahrig said. “For three days, with a mentor in the room, we help with business propositions, cost analysis formulas, figuring out what true costs are, and general business acumen. Being great at the farming part of the farm isn’t the same as knowing everything about figuring out the costs of production, and we’d like to help.” Rahrig encourages farmers of all kinds to explore what they have to offer, whether it’s financing or training opportunities. “The Michigan Good Food Fund aims to improve our food economy, grow businesses, make businesses more sustainable, and get more healthy food to everyone,” she said. “We’d love to talk to farmers about their ideas.” For more information, visit http:// migoodfoodfund.org/.
