he HAUSA Distinguished Junior Member award recognizes 17-21 year olds who have excelled in preparing for their life’s work, while contributing to their local and state Holstein activities. Established in 1922, this contest is the longest running Holstein youth program, and is the highest honor that can be given to a Junior Holstein member. Twelve semifinalists are chosen to attend the National Holstein Convention, where six Distinguished Junior Member finalists are selected. The top six DJMs receive an annual renewed adult membership with the Holstein Association USA, Inc. With the National Convention cancelled this year, we still wanted to honor our outstanding representative of Holstein youth in Kristen Burkhardt. Kristen was chosen as a semifinalist for the DJM award and as she prepares to retire as the President of the Michigan Junior Holstein Association we say congratulations on her DJM honor and extend our thanks for serving as a distinguished leader of Michigan youth. Kristen has worked hard to lead the junior program and has been unwavering in her responsibilities. It’s no wonder she was chosen as a semifinalist in the DJM contest. She’s the top of the heap in my book! Congratulations Kristen and good luck on your future endeavors! PC: Megan Sprague.

From the President’s Pen
Michigan Holstein Association Hello All, I hope this finds everyone doing well during these unprecedented time in our lives. Many things have changed from our normal routines and many things may continue to change as this pandemic interrupts our lives. With that being said, I do hope that all are staying healthy, both physically and mentally. This situation can and may bring on some undue stress and anxiety, as what was normal is now not normal. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone close to you to vent! We all need that at times! Let me say I am also probably as frustrated with Mother Nature as most of you are, she just doesn’t seem to want to give in the last two years and make anything any easier for us! Long wet spring last year, followed by a dry summer, then a wet fall. She did give us a fairly mild winter, but just doesn’t seem to want to put the winter temps to bed this year! One thing I will say about many of you that I know in this industry, whether you are from Michigan or you are from some other part of this country, is that we are a resilient people and we can survive many challenges that this world throws at us. That’s what makes dairymen and women different from many other walks of life, we thrive on being challenged. With all that’s going on in the world I have been listening to a podcast entitled the “Unpopular Farmer” hosted by

a couple in Canada who have a grain and sheep operation. They interviewed another grain farmer from Western Canada in one episode and this gentleman had a few things that have been sitting on my mind lately. Things we all can think about; 1. Can’t isn’t a word, it’s a challenge. 2. If it’s not broken, you’re not looking hard enough. Think about those statements for a bit, or better yet listen to the podcast. This particular one was episode 3, which after listening to this episode, I felt very challenged and motivated to be a better leader and to realize that my best assets at the farm, are my people. With all of that I want to end by saying that I hope to see most of you this summer at our All-Michigan Show and that we have a minute to catch up in person, (the old-fashioned way), not by Zoom or any of these new-fangled video chats that I’m not able to run! Until Next Time…

Michigan Junior Holstein News
From Your President
Even though our activities have slowed down a lot in the last three months, I can’t help but reminisce on the last four years that have flown by. During those years I have had the humbling experience to serve as the President of the Michigan Junior Holstein Association and am quickly approaching the end of my junior Holstein career. I would like to take this time to reflect on four things that I have been very proud of while serving MJHA. I would like to start off with passion. Through all of the events we have hosted, there is one thing that always stands out, and that is how passionate people are in the dairy industry. More specifically, this past February we hosted our MJHA Workshop with youth around the state. One of the activities was to create a poster board that had a topic related to anything about cows. After completing, all of the teams presented to the entire group. Although the groups only had an hour to create and prepare to present, each group presented as if the topic was second-nature to them. This was due to their passion…passion for the Holstein cow, passion for advocating for our industry, and passion for feeding the world with such wholesome and nutritious products. Throughout all of the events we have hosted in the last few years, I can’t help but say how proud of the involvement and interaction we have had from the juniors in the state of Michigan. Our latest event, the Mill Wheel Dairy Show Clinic, was going to be our largest attended event in all of the time I had been with MJHA. The board’s goal is always to get as many kids involved as we can, and to have a great turnout is an indicator of our success. MJHA’s purpose is to provide opportunities to dairy enthusiasts in the Great Lakes State, and I personally couldn’t be more excited with the involvement we have had over the last four years. In addition, the support system for the juniors in Michigan is something I have always been proud of. MJHA hosts many fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for events that we run or to sponsor juniors to attend the National Holstein Convention. Each and every fundraiser, there is always such a great support system to help make our events possible throughout the year. Especially the year of the 2018 National Holstein Convention when Michigan was the host. An event at this capacity is not easy to plan and execute, but it was our support system that made it such an awesome week. With that, I truly can’t thank all of the dairy farmers, Michigan Holstein members, and everyone else who helped support, enough. Last but not least, the people I have had the honor to work beside. To the many junior Holstein members and our advisors, without any of you my experience with MJHA would not have been so great. The dedication, great ideas, and hard work that each board member has brought to the table truly shows what great hands the dairy industry is in in the fuSummer 2020
ture. Our advisors have committed so much time to MJHA and have always made sure that we are on the right track. I will continue to encourage youth to join the MJHA Board and join a team where so many great people are involved! MJHA’s planning has been on hold for right now, but it’s hard not to reminisce on the past and look forward to what the MJHA board will pursue in the future. It has been such a wonderful opportunity to serve the juniors in Michigan. I truly can’t thank everyone enough for their passion, involvement, support, and for being the great people you all are. Thank you for your time,

Dairy farmers are resilient. We’ve heard it time and time again as we’ve navigated through these last few years of low prices. We thought we had weathered the worst of the storm coming into 2020 and Covid-19 let us know we weren’t done yet. Yeah, we are a resilient bunch, but that’s because we don’t have a choice. Every single day, we have a barn full of cows that depend on us, we have little eyes that are watching how we handle these challenges, and we have family legacies that we want to see continued. So, we have to get up every day, we have to face reality, and we have to keep pushing. But that doesn’t mean at times that we don’t feel overwhelmed. And when those times come, it’s important that we pause and look for the good. The past five years have taught us to roll with the punches, to tighten the belt, and to push on. This year is shaping up to be very different than expected, but find the good. Our traditional shows are changing but it’s allowing us to be creative and innovative and it could allow a young breeder to participate who hasn’t been able to before. Our kids are out of school but they’re gaining a greater love for the industry and our operations. Our food supply chain has been rattled

but we are becoming more nimble to meet changing customer demands. The water line broke but it was something that had been on the upgrade dream list for years and it’s finally getting done. Whatever it may be look for the good, no matter how small. We are all riding a similar roller coaster so continue to support each other. Sometimes a simple check-in becomes the highlight of the week for someone. Never underestimate the power of our community. And continue to be those resilient dairy farmers.

Supporting Each Other Through the Storm By Bev Berens Just when it looks like the storm has let up with a little relief in early 2020 milk markets, another storm bears down, leaving Michigan dairy farmers to believe that short reprieve was just the eye of the storm — a small window of peace and security between the front and back ends of a deluge. “We’re all in this together” is like nails on a chalkboard at this point, but the truth more than ever before, is that right now, dairy farmers need to support each other wholeheartedly. There is no reason to repeat the issues as they are

more than obvious to anyone who has ever received a milk check. To support each other, two questions were posed to five dairy farmers from different demographics. Their answers are from the heart. Question one: What one or two things do you find yourself doing or reflecting on to get through this unique time in history? Ashley Kennedy: I often find myself going back to my basic comforts of movement or reading. Since I was a kid, I could lose myself in a good book and I have found myself doing that move often lately. I also find my yoga and running/walking habits to be a great way to clear my head. Tara Good: Things have been very “business as usual” for us, because we are working around the clock. I do think I rely a lot on music to keep me uplifted; and we love what we do! My motto has always been Carpe Diem, or Seize the Day, and I truly try to find beauty in the simple things daily. I think many people forget to do this. It could be as simple as enjoying the sunset, the alfalfa field coming to life after a long cold winter or the birth of a beautiful heifer calf. Joe Kulhawick: I have a job I love and am grateful that I can get up and go to work every day. I realize I am just passing through this world and trying to do the Lord’s work. This dumping milk to me is sinful and a bitter pill to swallow. I rely on my faith and the Bible, and even though we cannot go to church and worship together, I try to do daily devotions and look for wisdom and knowledge from above, because no one else has wisdom like that. Mary Costigan: Undoubtedly my faith! Constant conversations with the good Lord throughout the entire day relaxes my anxiety about all the on-farm and off-farm things that are out of my control. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand.” Those words in Isaiah 41:10 could not be truer in a time like this. How comforting to know that with all the upset in the world, that God is always with us! God has
always upheld me with a strong supportive family, including my husband of almost 12 years, my precious and rowdy sons (Case 6, Brant 3, Kipp 10 months) and my Dad, Mom, brothers Jake and Dave and sister Sarah. Gerald Geurink: We don’t have any animals here anymore, it was just more than I could do at 80. I just take care of the things we have here at home, read, watch TV, church on the computer, read some more. That’s about it. Once in a while we sneak off and visit some relatives that are our age. Question two: What is one business tool or piece of advice that you incorporate to keep your business moving forward? Ashley Kennedy: While going through struggles and stresses on the farm, I have found that taking time away, even for a bit, helps my frame of mind. Even when I know it is painful, know our numbers. I like to avoid doing things like that when it’s bad and usually I feel more in control when I know the truth, good or bad. Tara Good: As far as business advice/ strategy, I really think for us it is to just take one day at a time. Dairy farming has always been and will continue to be filled with challenges daily. Remember that everything happens for a reason. We focus on taking care of our herd to the best of our ability. From a cow management standpoint, we can sum it up by saying grass is king for us. A high forage diet positively impacts overall immunity and health of our cows. Joe Kulhawick: The one thing we try to fall back on is to stay out of severe debt and out of the bank. Unfortunately, reserves will only last so long. We watch our labor budget close, and since we are healthy and able, we are working more and of course getting paid less. But we have our health and strength, and it helps keep us out of the bank. We diversified seven years ago into custom feed harvesting and selling feed. We also have a sweet corn plot. Diversification gives us something to fall back on and can be a real help. Mary Costigan: I am afraid I cannot give too much surprising and helpful insight on this besides living frugally. Being raised by the master of frugality, it is in my blood to not spend frivolously. The fundamentals of my breeding program haven’t changed. I Summer 2020
may be quicker to use Angus in a mating, but I am still seeking that perfect (to me) sized individual with functional feet and legs and beautiful udder with positive milk production and always positive fertility traits. We give probably too many chances to calves that don’t show promise because we cannot stand not giving them a chance. We trim out expenses where we can, but the animals and

their comfort are still priority. In the background, my dad has been a miracle worker when it comes to enlisting in helpful programs and knowing where to put money that is going to benefit us the most in the short and long term. Has he been hard to convince over the years to spend money to make money? Absolutely, but ultimately that way of thinking is what is getting us through times

like these. Gerald Geurink: I’ve been through crisis, too. Back in the ‘70’s, I got divorced. It was the worst thing that ever happened to me. Then, about four years later, I got married again and it has been the best 35 years of my life. If you have cows, you just keep doing what you have to every day. Just keep slugging it out.

Direct to Consumer Sales During a Pandemic By Carla Wardin In the fall of 2019, Michigan Dairy Cattle News featured three dairy farms selling directly to consumers. How have their businesses changed due to the pandemic? Ferry Farms, Litchfield “It’s changed a ton, but in a good way,” said Ali Ferry, owner of Ferry Farms in Litchfield. “We’ve done 20 percent more in sales in the past six weeks than we did in the first six months we were open.” Ferry said that the contactless buying is preferred by their customers during the shutdown. “It’s simple, and simple seems to be what people want right now. Since most of our orders are online or over the phone, there’s no contact. People place the order, we bag it up and put it in the porch freezer. People grab the bag out of the freezer so they don’t have to see or touch anyone,” she said. Due to the pandemic, they also began offering delivery to the elderly, handicapped, and immunocompromised population. “We feel like this is helpful to people in our community,” Ferry said. Rod-er-Dic Farm, Byron Center Sherry Meyer, owner of Rod-er-Dic Farm in Byron Center, is also serving her community. “When people started panicking, I had people here who were really scared. They had families to feed and they didn’t know how they were going to do it. I had seven freezers full of food, and the meat was gone in five days,” she said. “This is just the standard now.” Unfortunately, the processing side of the business is a limitation. “We just had two of our local processors close their doors,” Meyer said. “Apparently someone tested positive and the other workers are too scared to come to work. Other processors aren’t taking appointments until 2021.” Meyer welcomes the additional income, especially since it helps with current low milk prices due to the closure of restaurants and schools. “We’ve been selling butter, eggs, honey, cheese, syrup, hand sanitizer – people can come in and get their basic needs,” she said. “Of course we’re taking all precautions. My door is only one year old, but I’ve used so much bleach on the handle that it’s starting to rust!” Pleasant View Dairy & Beef, Jonesville Jennifer Lewis, of Pleasant View Dairy & Beef in Jonesville, said she can sum up her experience in one word – crazy. “I can sell beef from two steers in 13 hours,” she said. “We’re using three different butcher shops, but it’s not enough. I have two sheets of a waiting list for people who want to buy. People want quarters and halves, but they can’t even buy freezers – they’re sold out.” Lewis wonders what farm sales will be like after the pandemic. “We’re hoping people come back for the flavor and the quality,” she said. “I have people in here who have never bought directly from a farm or thought about the face behind the burger. To me, that’s the best thing that’s happened through this – consumers are thinking about the people raising what they eat. We answer a lot of questions, we offer a lot of education, and we welcome them all to come.” Michigan Dairy Cattle News 15

Old Barn, Six Generations, Embraces Couple on Wedding Day
By Bev Berens A rustic barn, country views, an indoor-outdoor venue are all part of the allure for couples who want to hold their big day in a barn. “We wanted to get married in a barn, so why not just do it here on the farm,” Melanie Provoast said. “It might be a little extra work, but in the end, it was so worth it.” On September 21, 2019, Clark Family Farms, owned by Nick and Rhoda Clark, hosted the wedding of their granddaughter, Melanie Provoast, daughter of Jessica and Tad Provoast, to her fiancé EJ Bodrie, in Prescott, Michigan. Clark Family Farms is home to Rho-Nic Holsteins and Pro-Hart Jerseys, where Summer 2020
the family milks 140 head of registered Holsteins and Jerseys. Part of what made the barn nuptials extra special is the history behind the barn which was built in 1947 by John W. Clark. His father, George Loren Clark established the farm which has been operated by the family for more than 100 years and six generations. The 100’ X 40’ hay mow where the ceremony took place, is still used for round bale storage. Two years of preparation went into polishing the gothic roofed barn, built from a Sears & Roebuck kit, into a suitable site for the wedding. Grass and flower seedings, cleanup both inside and out of the barn, obtaining and placing appropriate antiques in the yard and on barn walls took time and talent. White oak trees turned to lumber were harvested on the farm for floor joists to stabilize and strengthen the historic mow’s floor. During the barn remodel, a letter to J.W. Clark dating back to 1917 was discovered. The letter was from Fox River Butter Company who purchased cream from Clark Dairy. The correspondence has become a treasure that further documents the farm’s history. The bridal party went in different directions to dress for the day---the guys to the farmhouse, the ladies to a nearby hotel. Sunshine glimmered through the vertical cut rough walls as the couple exchanged wedding vows. Wooden Amish benches provided rustic seating for the 120 guests. An occasional chicken or cow chimed in to remind the guests that this was indeed still a working farm. “When this barn was built, who could have imagined six generations into the future,” said Rhoda Clark. “The families this barn has supported; the herds, flocks and harvests it has held safely within its walls and under the strong yet beautifully arched interior. What an unimaginable blessing it has been and continues to be.” “It was a lot more work than having it at a venue, but it means a lot more in the end,” said Melanie. “The pictures mean a lot more to us, so we are glad we did the wedding there.” Michigan Dairy Cattle News 17
