About the Cover

New York in the summer is scenic at the very least, and NYHN photo contest finalist, Alyssa Grocott, Little Falls, captured that beauty in her cow photo. The 2020 contest is underway and you can enter by emailing your photos to Melissa Hart at farm.writer@hotmail.com. Your photo may grace the cover of the NYHN!

From the Editor As I stood in the barnyard and looked over the vast green alfalfa field that laid against the rolling green hills on a sunny August day, I felt like I was peering in on a little piece of heaven. On our way to the Cortland Classic, we were advised that we really should stop at Currie Holsteins in Tully. Taking that advice, we rolled into the driveway, stepped out of the car and were met with the warm smile and friendly handshake of Chad Currie. It was a regular workday on the farm, but Chad was happy to step MELISSA HART outside the daily routine to welcome two strangers who wanted nothing more than to walk through the barn full of deep-pedigreed Registered Holsteins. Introductions were made to the herdsman, Paul Snyder, and we were off to the story telling races as Paul and my husband Bobby, swapped tales from back in the day. Having shared a visit with Maggie Murphy the day before at a show in Ohio, it was providential that we stood in the barn where she and her husband spent so many years working with some of the legends of the breed. John Currie darkened the barn door with a friendly welcome and two hours later we had gone through the cows, talked over the history of Curr-Vale, discussed the future of Curr-Vale and I stepped out to take in the beauty of Curr-Vale. The only way to describe it was that it felt like home. We had been on the road for a few days, we were in unfamiliar territory and five hundred miles from our southern Michigan farmstead. I looked across the green fields that would keep a herd of cows fed when the tundra turned frozen and frigid and the overwhelming sense of calm sent a flush of peace down to my bones. In a world that goes by too quickly with full schedules and endless commitments, I want to thank the Currie Clan for taking the time to make a couple of strangers feel welcome at Curr-Vale. Did you miss out on the summer shows? No worries, we have plenty of show results in this issue and the October issue will feature the results from the long-awaited NY State Holstein Show! Also, don’t forget to fill out your entries for the All-NY contest and the futurity! Those entry forms are in this issue.

Hello everyone and welcome to September! It is crazy to think that we are only four months away from 2021, but I am sure that these next four months will fly by. Usually September means back to school, but that might not be the case this year for some of us. I am excited because Cornell Danielle Herrick is planning on having us actually come to campus, even if some of the classes are still in the online setting. I have been looking forward to college for the longest time, and though it isn’t going to be exactly what I was expecting for my first year, I am just excited to go for the experience. At my high school we had an FFA program, but there wasn’t really anyone who did much of anything with dairy. There were a few younger kids who showed cows, but no one my age was into it, at least not in the way that I was. I had to rely on programs such as the 4-H and Holstein Association to be able to interact with people who shared my interest in the dairy industry. Don’t get me wrong, these are amazing programs and I have learned so much from them, and my college roommate is someone that I met through the Holstein Association, but half of the time kids I met through these programs lived on the other side of the state. This is one of the reasons why I was so excited to be going to college, because being in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, I would be constantly around people who had similar experiences to what I have had. Not only that, but I would be able to take the classes that I was actually interested in and that would help prepare me for a future job. Even though this year is going to be completely different from what school is usually like, I encourage you all to make the most out of it. Maybe you use this as a chance to become better with using technology, which could be very helpful in the future, or you take the extra time to study a little bit more. Whatever the school year looks like for you, I hope that you are able to enjoy it, but I also hope that things get back to a somewhat normal routine by the time 2021 rolls around.

Tri-County News

By Caitlyn VanDeusen Hello everyone! Can you believe that summer is almost over? I know I can’t. This summer was like none other. With county fairs and many other shows being canceled it was a summer no one will ever forget. Throughout these past couple months, we haven’t been able to see our friends or celebrate the amazing cows within our area. Luckily though for our Tri-County members we were finally able to do just that at the Tri8 - NYN September 2020

County Holstein Show. Members were able to show their cows, and for most of us it was the first time this year. It was truly one of the best things in the world. With everything going on it was amazing to be able to do something “normal” again. Now onto the results, starting with showmanship. In the 10 and under class, Lily Olsen was 1st and Lucas Nolan was 2nd. For the 11-12-year olds, Hannah King was 1st and Riley Kobor was 2nd. Then in the 13-15year olds, Lauren King came in 1st and Mason Ziemba came in 2nd. In the 16-21-year-old class Ashlynn Foster came in 1st and Tyler Larmon was 2nd. Finally, for Master Showmanship, Lauren King was named Master Showman, Mason Ziemba was named Reserve Master Showman, and Lily Olsen was Honorable Mention. Congratulations to all who competed in showmanship! The other 2 days of the show consisted of our heifer and cow classes. Landon Nolan was 1st place in the Spring Calf class with BPD Unstopabull Alexa-ET. Lily Olsen came in 1st place in the Winter Calf class with Whitdale Lightning Red-TW. Nicole Robinson came in 1st place in the Fall Calf class with Elm-Spring Blake Cheeky. Ryan Peck came in 1st place in the Summer Yearling class with Clear-Echo Sidekick 4773. In the Spring Yearling class, Johnathon King came in 1st place with Fairmont Unstopabull Amy. In the Winter Yearling class, Hailee Liddle came in 1st with Ms Blexy DRMN Blessing-ET. In the Fall Yearling class, Grace Stroud came in 1st with MS Beachnutacres ZBW Eva. Whitdale Lightning Red-TW shown by Lily Olsen was named Junior Champion and Liddleholme Avalan Margo shown by Mason Ziemba was named Reserve Junior Champion. The last day of the Tri County Holstein Show consisted of the cow classes. Hannah King came in 1st place in the Junior 2-year-old class with Kings-Ransom Und Curlie. Wyatt Mitchell came in 1st place in the Senior 2-yearold class with Liddleholme D-Back Asia-Red. Lauren King came in 1st place in the Junior 3-year-old class with Kings-Ransom KR Climax. Nate King came in 1st place in the Senior 3-year-old class with Kings-Ransom Merjack Melons. Liddleholme D-Back Asia-Red shown by Wyatt Mitchell was named Intermediate Champion and Kings-Ransom Und Curlie shown by Hannah King was named Reserve Intermediate Champion. In the 4-year-old class, Adam King came in 1st place with Kings-Ransom Monterey Clash. In the 5-year-old class, Blake Wadsworth came in 1st place with Eildon-Tweed Chapter 23-ET. In the Aged Cow class, Bryan Twinkle came in 1st place with Trinkle At Gaby. Kings-Ransom Monterey Clash shown by Adam King was named Senior Champion and Liddleholme Take-Two shown by Hailee Liddle was named Reserve Senior Champion. Finally, Kings-Ransom Monterey Clash shown by Adam King was named Grand Champion and Liddleholme D-Back Asia-Red shown by Wyatt Mitchell was named Reserve Grand Champion. The Tri-County Holstein Club would also like to thank Tim Abbott for judging at our show, Chelsea Hanselman for helping in the ring, and Cybil Fisher for taking amazing pictures of our cows! Congratulations to all who showed!

Obituary  GRACE MARIE GIFFORD

UNADILLA - Grace Marie Gifford, 96, passed away peacefully on Aug. 17, 2020, at Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Grace was born June 20, 1924, to Andrew and Ida (Weyrauch) Wagner. She graduated from Deposit Central School and married William Gifford on May 20, 1944. Married for 52 years, they worked together every day raising their family, creating a beautiful homestead and building the Crest Knoll herd of Registered Holsteins on Route 8 in Deposit. She was predeceased by her husband in 1996 and remained in their farmhouse for 20 independent years. A familiar sight in summer was Grace mowing her acre and one-half lawn on her Cub Cadet with her beloved Chocolate Lab, Ben, watching from under a shade tree. In 2016, Grace moved to Unadilla right around the corner from her loving daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Dave Johnson, who diligently saw to her comfort until her move to Fox Nursing Home in 2019. Grace was a dedicated and contributing member of the Masonville Federated Church. For many years, her strawberry rhubarb pies were a special part of their church suppers. Executive Manager’s

Report

Wow, I cannot believe summer is almost over! I certainly did not anticipate it to be as busy CHELSEA HANSELMAN as it has been but I am so glad it was. I have had the opportunity to travel all over the State these last couple of months and meet so many of you already! I hope you all have had a chance to enjoy all that summer has to offer, whether it be attending a show, a BBQ with family or friends, taking a walk to admire your crops, watching a sunset, or even just enjoying a bowl of ice cream after a long day of hard work. Just a few short months ago it seemed as if we would not have much to look forward to this summer- however, I am honored to be part of an association that cares about their members and woks to do everything they can to remind them why they do what they do. The number of county clubs that were able to put together shows for all of you to exhibit your finest cattle at is impressive. I personally know the work that goes into putting on a show during these hard times and I am so proud that so many of you were able to accomplish such a fete. Exhibitors, please make sure to thank all of the volunteers involved into putting on such a showit takes countless hours to make it happen! I am also so impressed with the quality of cattle that I saw walk through each show ring. Regardless of the size of the show, the quality was there and that is a testament to the hard work that each of you put in every day. With summer coming to a close, we begin to prepare for the start of school (however that may look for your school this year). It is also the time for you all to start thinking about the All-NY contest, Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) contest, and the other various contests held at convention. If any of you have any ideas or suggestions for convention, please reach out to me. The Junior convention this year is being hosted by the Chenango County Holstein Club and I look forward to working closely with them on this. We do not have locations set for either convention due to the uncertainty of the future in regards to COVID; however, we hope to finalize this in the next couple of weeks. If any county junior clubs need help getting organized for any of the convention contests, please reach out. I know several people who could help with dairy bowl, speech contests, dairy knowledge, etc. We are moving forward with having a Fall sale but have chosen a different format than previous years. This year’s sale will be virtual with Dave Rama 10 - NYN September 2020

auctioneering. We are renaming the sale to the NY Breeder’s Sale to spotlight our breeder’s in New York. We intend to continue to work with the Cornell Dairy Science students for this sale to help support their club. This sale has a history of producing success storieswhether it be a show winner or a breed-leading high genomics cow. If you are interested in consigning to the sale, reach out to Chelsea Hanselman. I hope to see you all at the NY Holstein State Show in Greenwich N.Y. I am excited to see New York’s finest cattle all in one place! If you cannot make it, Dairy Agenda and Cowsmo will be providing live coverage. For those of you heading off to college or starting back at school, good luck! Parents, enjoy it while you can!

From The NYHA President Jason Pullis

Where does the time go? After a spring season with the kids home from school that seemed to drag on forever because of the battles over math lessons and prepositional phrases, the summer flew by in the blink of an eye. Around here, it seemed to be a summer full of “coming of age” moments for us. Thirteen-year-old Maxwell has picked up a lot of slack on busy nights (and some mornings too), handling chores in the calf barn. Over the last few weeks, he has consistently been helping with milking chores as well, managing the five units on his side of the barn with relative ease and with relatively little interference from myself or his Uncle Luke. Not to be outdone, Owen (11 years old) has become very adept at filling the feed cart and feeding the milking cows in the barn. If there is a job to do with the skidsteer, he is the man doing it. Now with September here, it looks like our dependence on our

junior helpers will change a little bit. At this time, the plan is for our kids to head back to school. How long they stay and to what extent we approach “normal” is yet to be seen. Regardless, I realize that education needs to be their priority, but that won’t stop me from trying to squeeze a little more help from them any time that I can. Watching them grow up on the farm, working side by side with us and become responsible young men was one of the benefits that we were searching for when we returned to the farm in 2012. Even in a world of chaos, New York Holstein has been extremely busy throughout the summer. Chelsea has been on board for over two months now and she is quickly learning the ropes of the organization and how things click. She has spent a great deal of time attending every club or regional show that happened in July and August and has been on top of every detail for the upcoming State Holstein Show to be held in Greenwich on September 4th and 5th. Even though it is a two day show, I hope you can make time to attend for at least one day. The executive and show committees

have worked very hard to put together an event that members can participate in and be proud of. We realize that Greenwich is not exactly a central location within the state, but finding a venue that had adequate facilities for the number of animals we are expecting and be willing to host an event of this caliber was no easy task. I have great confidence that everything will go off as planned and a show that all New Yorkers can be proud of will take place. We’ll see you there! Have you been following the daily Facebook posts about the New York Cows of the Century? Every day seems to bring out some new and interesting facts about the greatest cows that all have New York connections. I picked my top 10 favorites early on, but I may have to reconsider after reading some of the stories behind these cows. I hope all of our members have had a safe and productive summer and I hope to see you down the road at some point. As always, my phone is usually on, so please call or text if there is something on your mind. See you in Greenwich! Jason

Looking Back With Barrie Barrie Potter of Syracuse enjoys reminiscing about his early years in the Registered Holstein business, influential cows, and those charismatic icons who kept the business colorful.

A CAST OF CHARACTERS In March of 1981, Barrie Potter was asked to work the Berkshire Valley Dispersal owned by Ken Main of Copake, NY. The sale was held directly across the road from where the World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Cutting Edge T Delilah, would sell for $210,000 some 38 years later in 2019. The usual suspects were on the sale crew, Ralph Gushie, Bobby Goodine, Doug Seidel, Frank Marstella , Bill Chilcoat, Tim Coons, aka “Cooner” and others. “That was the first time I met Cooner,” Barrie remarked. Bill Chilcoat was one of the older members of the sale crew and was a mentor for the younger guys. He had worked most of the sales for Hanover-Hill Sales and Service and was one of the regulars with the HanoverHill show string. “Billy had managed Deep Lake Guernseys and was the one who actually came up with Deep Lake Signs.” Barrie continued, “We had gone into a restaurant for dinner, and they had a black sign with those white plastic letters, and Billy thought that would be a good idea to use for signs over the cows. So, he started making those signs and Dreamstreet, and everyone else started using them in their barns at home and at the shows with their pedigree information. That was his thing.” Bill also had a clipper repair and sharpening service, he did a lot of clipping in eastern New York, helped the Hanover-Hill show string in Ontario, and won the Klussendorf in 1984. Barrie added, “When we would picture cattle with Maggie Murphy, Bill was always on the halter. He was a great mentor; everyone who worked with him learned a lot.”

THE PINEHURST CREW A crew from Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, would often show up to help with the sales. “They worked at the farm, but they also did shows and sales and could come and go when they wanted,” Barry explained. “They would come out and work the big sales for Hanover-Hill, and Doug Seidel and other guys would go work sales for David Bachman.” The Pinehurst crew arrived for the Berkshire Valley Sale, and they all headed to the bar, “That’s where I first met Cooner.” Tim Coons of Amenia, NY., had been at a wedding earlier that evening and showed up at the bar where the guys were enjoying a nightcap. “I looked out on the dancefloor, and there was a guy in a leisure suit and a perm, and he was having a good time dancing.” Barrie continued, “The next morning, I saw him at Ken Main’s in his work clothes.” Thirty-nine years later, Cooner and Barrie are still working side by side at shows and sales. 12 - NYN September 2020

Ralph Gushie and the boys from Pinehurst were familiar with each other and had worked together in the past. Barrie laughed and said, “Ralph and I were in the same motel room, and the Pinehurst guys came banging on the door. It was cold out, and they came in and tore the blankets off Ralph’s bed and threw them on his truck, saying they thought his truck was cold.” Barrie continued, “Ralph had a few choice words for them, but then at 4 am, we all got up and went to work together.” Frank Marstella from Maine, was another famous herdsman who liked to use his time off to work the sales. “He was a really good cowman, and after one sale, he wanted Seidel to take him to the bus station so he could head home. Seidel told him he would get him a plane ticket, but Frank insisted on taking the bus. The next time I saw Frank, he said he was never going to take the bus again; it took him 24 hours to get home.”

THE CRAZY 8 SYNDICATE Back at the Berkshire Valley sale, there happened to be a dairy sale at the local stockyards. The boys couldn’t resist and decided to poke around at the sale to see what was selling. They found a Bootmaker daughter named Nell, “There was a group of us who went in on her for $700, and we called it the ‘Crazy 8 Syndicate.’ We bought her to run her through the Ken Main sale.” Barrie continued, “The problem was, the cow leaked milk one side, so she was lopsided.” While the local vet didn’t think it was a good idea to run the cow through Ken’s sale, Bootmaker Nell made her entrance into the sale ring, and Dave Younger took a little extra time. Barrie explained, “Younger made a big deal out of her saying that since the sale crew doesn’t get paid much, they were going to sell this cow as strictly a charity case.” The Crazy 8 Syndicate realized its first profit when Nell was struck off at $1100.

A CALL FROM BUDDY FLEMMING After the Berkshire Valley Sale, Barrie was back home in Connecticut when the phone rang one night --it was Buddy. Barrie explained, “Buddy said he had just started working at Dreamstreet and he was looking for someone who was ‘willing to work, didn’t know that much and was willing to do things my way.’” Dave Younger and Doug Seidel assured Buddy that Barrie would be a good fit for the job. Dreamstreet milked approximately 1000 cows on twenty-six different farms all in Delaware County. Barrie arrived about two weeks before the spring show in Syracuse, “When I drove up there, I never realized how spread out Dreamstreet was,” Barrie commented. When Buddy introduced Barry to Dennis Lucas, Barrie’s memory came to life as he remembered Lucas as “the guy from Eastern States who was putting baby pigs in everyone’s sleeping bags the night after the show.” The next few weeks were a whirlwind for Barrie as he worked for Dreamstreet at the spring show and then on to Audet’s Sale in Vermont. Barrie commented, “That could be a novel.” Next month….the Audet Novel

Once in a Lifetime For classification we were able to have the whole family home, four generations. It was especially nice to have Grandma (Mary Inman), the matriarch of the family, there to watch, someone who has instilled in all of us a love for good cows. With everyone helping to get ready for the classifier, it not only made the whole experience more fun but also more meaningful and memorable, almost nostalgic in a way. All the prep paid off as we had one of the best classifications we can remember. CLASSIFICATION RESULTS: This time around: 13 new excellent (7 homebred) 1 new 94 1 New Ex 2 yr old, 4 new 92 , 3 new 91 Herd Totals: 27 Excellent 13 Very good BAA: 112.7 Herd Average: 2x 28,755 M, 3.8 F, 3.0 P SSC: 48,000

Having Trevor back on the farm has been great in several ways. For over 22 months the cows have been averaging over 90 lbs a cow, at one point even reaching an average of 102 lbs/cow. He has a passion for developing great cows and we appreciate all he has done. It’s been nice to have a fresh set of legs in the fourth quarter, so to speak. A huge thanks to Al and Carolee McClure and Dave Post who let Trevor select three awesome young cows last year, all of which ended up going excellent this time. Also, thanks to Jerry Law, Beth Gallagher, Bill-Mar Farms and Lilly Schmitz for helping Trevor grow his herd with promising cows. COVID has allowed Nikki to return to the farm this summer and we have been thankful for all the ways she has added to the labor force, both in the barn and helping run the new farm store we opened last year.

2022 NEW YORK HOLSTEIN FUTURITY NUMBER 46 PURPOSE: The New York Holstein 2-Year-old Futurity is a project of the New York Holstein-Friesian Association to stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of outstanding Registered Holsteins. PROCEDURES: This 2-Year-old Futurity is based upon the nomination of an animal by an owner, to be shown in the 2-Year-old Futurity class at a designated show in the year that she is an eligible 2-Year-old. Three nominations are required for each animal that competes. All nominations are the responsibility of the owner and must be made on regulation entry blanks, accompanied by specified fees, and meet nomination dates and other rules as set forth below. The accumulated monies, received from the three nominations, shall make up the purse for any one year and shall be divided as prize money among the exhibitors, according to the placings as set forth below. FUTURITY ENTRIES: The show is charged with the enforcement of all the rules and the responsibilities of the operation of the Futurity. RULES AND CONDITIONS ELIGIBILITY: Any registered Holstein female, 87% or higher, bred by a member of the New York Holstein-Friesian Association (senior or junior) that was born from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020 is eligible for Futurity Number 46. On first nominations an animal may have papers pending, however, on second nominations, registration numbers must be available. FEES: 1st payment of $3.00 with nomination shall be paid by November 2, 2020. 2nd payment of $8.00 with nomination shall be paid by November 1, 2021. 3rd payment of $10.00 shall be postmarked as instructed on the third nomination letter or 30 days prior to the showing of the Futurity class. NOMINATIONS: Any member, resident or not, in good standing of the New York Holstein Association may nominate any number of eligible heifers. The second and third payments shall likewise be mailed and postmarked not later than the due dates. PURSE: The purse in this event shall consist of all monies received by the New York Holstein Futurity as nomination fees, subsequent payments or contributions, less the actual expenses incurred in its promotion and management. All Futurity monies shall be kept in a separate Futurity fund and used only for Futurity purposes and shall be withdrawn only under bona fide signature of the treasurer of the New York Futurity, with the approval of the Futurity Committee. The purse in this event will be divided among the top twenty placings under the formula listed below. If less than 20 animals are shown, all monies shall be paid by dividing proportionately between all exhibitors in FuTuRITY #46. 1st place winner............................20% 2nd place ......................................12% 3rd place........................................09% 4th place........................................08% 5th place........................................06% Next 5 places........................04% each Next 5 places........................03% each Next 5 places........................02% each REFUNDS: When nomination fees and subsequent payments in connection with the Futurity are received, they are committed to the purse for this event and no refunds will be made, whether or not the animal is shown or its eligibility discontinued by the owner. In the event, however, that any condition should arise which prevents the showing of the Futurity, the right is reserved to cancel same and refunds made to persons owning females that have been nominated, their share of all monies accrued after the deduction of actual expenses in the promotion of this Futurity. MAINTAINING ELIGIBILITY: Eligibility after an animal has been nominated as a calf is maintained by making subsequent payments on the due dates as specified heretofore. This responsibility rests solely with the owner, after being notified of re-entry dates, and failure to make the next payment cancels eligibility and all previous fees become a part of the purse. SALE OF THE ELIGIBLE ANIMALS: When an animal that is entered in the New York Holstein Futurity is sold, the eligibility may be maintained by the new owner, and it shall be his/her responsibility to inform the Futurity Secretary of the change in ownership. The seller shall inform the buyer that the animal purchased is already entered in the Futurity and it will be the responsibility of the buyer to submit subsequent fees in accordance with the rules and closing dates. MISCELLANEOUS: The New York Holstein-Friesian Association nor New York Show Committee is in no way responsible for the condition of the premises in which the Futurity is held and is not liable in the event of accident or loss to persons or property. All matters pertaining to the showing of the Futurity are subject to the rules, regulations and health requirements of the show at which the Futurity is held.
