From the Executive Director By Tom Thorbahn
Spring sure was slow in coming to Ohio. Those rainy, cold days in midMay, did nothing to help the farmers get in fields to plant spring crops. The of saying, “that’s Ohio weather” sure holds true this year. A few weeks ago, many of you heard the sad news of the passing of Dr. Peter Spike. Pete was a great teacher, coach, mentor, and friend to so many of us in the Ohio dairy industry. He will be greatly missed by the Ohio Holstein Association for all he did; board member, officer, committee chair, webmaster, sale catalog editor, sale advertising, and so much more. I personally remember Pete’s love for music, we regularly compared ‘notes’ on musical pieces we had performed and enjoyed. Pete was a man of great faith, a wonderful husband and father, a Holstein breeder, and a friend to so many. May he rest in peace as he sings with the angels. The National Holstein Convention this year is in Appleton, Wisconsin, June 24 to 27. The Wisconsin members are hard at work planning a wonderful week. The Annual Meeting of Holstein Association, USA will be June 26 and 27, with elections of officers, board members, and committee reports. The Ohio delegates this year are Paul Haskins, Joe Miley, Ken Janes, Julie Renner, Matthew Steiner, and Bill Indoe. They are your voice to the Annual Meeting, contact them with thoughts and concerns. This year we have a Quiz Bowl team entered from Ohio in the junior contests. Thanks to Laurie Menzie who has worked on coaching our team. We wish them the best of luck. Convention 2021 plans are moving forward; the Columbus Convention Center in downtown Columbus is being booked for the event, June 21- 27, 5
2021. The committees are meeting and beginning to formulate ideas and plans. A lot of work has gone forward in the last couple months, since we found out that the Football Hall of Fame facilities in Canton would not be ready for our event. More to come as we move forward. Remember, as summer approach-
es our district shows and county fairs will begin. Hopefully you will each find time to attend, whether as an exhibitor or as a spectator; there is nothing better than fellowship with family, fellow dairymen, and the great Holstein cow. Don’t forget. State Fair entries are due in mid-June. Have a safe and enjoyable summer.

A Message from the President By Bill Indoe
I hope that by the time we all are enjoying this issue of the news, that we have had a good spring. We need a productive year. Looking back a bit to April, I want to give some praise to the membership. At our April board meeting, we had a packed house at the office. It was standing room only, literally. It was awesome to see! We also had a very productive meeting. The next day brought an excellent spring sale in Wooster. Due to the economic times we all knew the averages would
be down but to see all of the young people bidding and getting heifers was great. Some of these young people made their very first purchase! As a Holstein Association, we need to remember we are all about serving the members I hope that we did just that by hosting that spring sale full of show calves and heifers, and that we gained some new members in the process. If there are any issues that need to be discussed at National Holstein Convention in Wisconsin at the end of June, please contact the office. Your concerns will be passed on to our delegates. I hope everyone has a great summer and show season. Feel free to call myself or anyone on the board, if you have questions.

1941-2019 ~ A Life Well-Lived
Dr. Peter W. Spike, Ph.D.
The dairy industry lost a valuable asset when Dr. Peter W. Spike, Ph.D., passed away on Wednesday morning, April 17, 2019. In celebrating a life well lived, this tribute to Pete, is a collection of sentiments from his former students and colleagues. This is just a small glimpse of the type of influence Dr. Spike had in his tenure at The Ohio State University. The Ohio Holstein Association is indebted to Pete for his hard work and dedication to the association, but most of all, for the positive impact he had on the generations of dairy producers in Ohio and beyond. The sentiments are similar: ~~~ He had a great influence on my life. ~~~ I’m not sure I knew how much so at the time. ~~~ He guided me in a better direction without me even realizing it. ~~~ I am forever grateful for the opportunities that being a part of The Ohio State University dairy judging team provided me. ~~~ I wonder just how did he put up with all of us! ~~~ For all that he did put up with, Pete remained in contact with and kept tabs on many of his former students, and he was genuinely proud of us! ~~~ Pete guided and influenced countless students during his time at The Ohio State University and beyond. Even in “retirement” Pete continued his involvement in the dairy industry and was a true giver of his time and talents to the 8 | 8

“Pete’s door was always open, and he always made time for his students. He was more than an advisor and coach, he was a friend to all.” Some of my best memories from college include Pete. Many were from the numerous dairy club trips and activities along with the many miles spent to and from judging practices and contests. Pete always had a way to motivate
us even when we were tired and could not bear the thought of giving one more set of reasons. One of my favorite memories was traveling with Pete and the state 4-H judging team to Europe. Pete’s door was always open, and he always made time for his students. He was more than an advisor and coach, he was a friend to all. He will be greatly missed. Emily Siegrist OSU ’99-‘03 Purina Animal Nutrition and Mercer Landmark ~~~ Many people will remember Pete Spike for his nationally competitive dairy judging teams. His effect was much bigger as his work changed the landscape of the dairy industry in Ohio for decades to come. Pete's success as a coach attracted kids from across the Midwest to come to Ohio State. His work with Ohio 4-H programs made Ohio students excited to become Buckeyes. His years of commitment to training, mentoring and service to the students have resulted in the development of outstanding industry leaders who serve today as dairy farmers, with breed associations, dairy promotions, in the breeding industry, nutrition, agricultural education, veterinary medicine and other dairy related fields. Pete's work has left a legacy of dairy leadership for decades to come! Dave Thorbahn OSU ’80-84 Select Sires Inc. ~~~ Dr. Pete Spike, thank you for being a great coach, mentor and friend. I truly enjoyed working with you while at the Ohio State Fair and always enjoyed the variety of music you shared with us. Your interest in our lives during and after our college experience was amazing Summer 2015
and you led by example; in a true OSU 4-H way. Thank you, Pete! Jana Crossgrove-Mussard OSU ’98-‘03 MARS Angus, Mt. Vernon, OH ~~~ I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Dr Pete Spike. Two years ago I was in attendance at the OSU Buckeye Classic Jersey Sale in Columbus as my daughter had a heifer consigned to the sale. I had the opportunity to catch up with Pete as I hadn’t seen him in over 25 years since I relocated to the northeastern USA. It was great to be able to visit with him once again. I have been involved with evaluation of dairy cattle for over 36 years with Select Sires. I owe a lot of the personnel success in my career to Pete as he was willing to teach me the basics of cattle evaluation through my educational experience at The Ohio State University. Growing up on a small grade cow dairy farm in western Ohio, I had little judging experience outside of my local 4-H and FFA chapters. My first year trying out for the OSU judging team, Pete kept the top eight individuals from his spring judging class to make up two teams. He would use a score keeping system based upon workouts and oral reasons. I was consistently in 4th – 5th place up to our first contest at Eastern States. The day before the contest, Pete picked his teams and I was to judge the next day. Hoping I had made the top team, I was disappointed and thus had a poor showing at Eastern States. Pete however stuck with me through the next year and I was proud to be a member of his 1982 team that placed third at the National Collegiate Dairy Judging Contest. Thanks Pete! Jerry L. Emerich OSU ’77-82 Premier Select Sires, Inc.
“Simply put, he is the reason I came to Ohio State, a path that changed the direction of my life forever.”
I am thankful that I was one of the many individuals who Pete had a lasting influence and positive impact throughout our lives. Simply put he is the reason I came to Ohio State, a path that changed the direction of my life forever. I am thankful that he nudged us when we needed nudging, often without us knowing it. I am thankful that he challenged us when we needed challenging. I am thankful he was compassionate to us when we needed compassion. I am thankful that he pushed us out of our comfort zones in school and life when we needed that. I am thankful that he celebrated with us when it was time to celebrate. Perhaps most importantly, I am thankful that he spent time with us when we needed time and that his mentoring went well beyond our college years. I am thankful that Jean and the rest of the family were willing to share him with all us over the years. He spent a lot of time away from his family during the fall and I am forever grateful for that. Finally, I will be always be thankful that I was one of “Pete’s kids.” Michael Hurst ’88-’93 Semex USA ~~~
“...He inspired courage and confidence that I didn’t even know was in me.” Pete was a huge influence in my life. I can't even put into words the lasting and powerful impression that his friendship, leadership, coaching and encouragement through 4-H, college, and in my early career has meant to me. During those memorable dairy judging trips for practice and competition, he inspired courage and confidence in me that I didn't even know was in me. I credit Pete for teaching me how to pre-
pare a set of reasons, how to organize my thoughts and how to confidently present my opinion. I have utilized what he taught me throughout my career. He even taught me how to tie a necktie! Through the years I thanked him, but I must say it again. Thank you, Pete! Scott Higgins OSU ’80-‘84 American Dairy Association Mideast ~~~ I first met Pete while I was a 4-her at the Ohio State Fair. He encouraged me to attend Ohio State to participate on the judging team. Once at Ohio State, he helped teach and nurture me, the next four years in college. Pete was a great teacher and coach, but an even better friend. He always took time to help me work through issues whether it related to school or my home farm. Pete showed me other opportunities in the dairy industry. From a professional level, Pete took me places and introduced me to people I would have never met in Coshocton County. The trips were always fun and I looked forward to seeing new places and great cattle. My memories on the judging team will last a lifetime. Pete touched so many lives, I feel fortunate that mine was one of them. money my parents had given me to pay for my first year of tuition. I was partying every night, waking up late and not going to class. A letter from the university urged me to go meet my academic advisor and under those circumstances, is when I first meet Pete Spike.
“The guidance and help, that at the time did not seem important to me, I now realize was fundamental in shaping who I am today.” I still remember walking up the stairs to the second floor of Plumb Hall, looking down, what seems to be a long hallway, and stepping into Pete’s office. I found myself sitting in front of a man I had never seen before, expecting the lecture of my life. Instead, Pete started talking to me about cows, and that I needed to try out for the dairy judging team. Never did he mention my failure to attend classes or my terrible grades. He simply invited me to participate in an experience that would change my life. During the next six years of my life, Pete was a silent guiding hand full of wisdom. He slowly helped me turn my life around and placed me on a path full of opportunities. I sincerely have to say that Pete Spike was a fundamental person in the success that I have been fortunate to have. He guided me and gave me the opportunity to be part of the dairy judging team, an experience that I will remember forever as it introduced me to a new world of friends and opportunities. Little by little Pete kept on helping open new doors. Somehow, he found out that I was curious about animal reproduction, and he encouraged me to ask for a job at Dr. Joy Pate’s Repro Lab which inspired me on the path of what would become my lifetime career. picked up the phone and put me in contact with Sue Alderman at Select Sires where I would become a student intern. A month before my graduation, he called me into his office and asked me if I had ever thought about doing Embryo Transfer. As I was saying that it sounded interesting, he was picking up the phone and calling Dr. Max Van Buren. Max taught me to collect and transfer embryos. Six months after graduation, Pete called me one day and asked me to stop by his office to visit him. He simply told me that I needed to get a Master’s degree in reproduction. Before I could even say whether or not I was interested, Pete was handing me the application materials for two graduate degree programs in reproduction and his letter of recommendation. I ended up at Texas A&M thanks to Pete's insistence. Only one thing I cannot forgive him for: the Geology class he made me take to graduate! The guidance and help, that at the time did not seem that important to me, I now realized it was fundamental in shaping who I am today. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Pete. “We first met in 1980... and little did I know the impact the man from up north would have on me.” Pete Spike was my college dad in so many ways. He didn't just advise me as a student, but built a comfort level that personal issues were easy to address with Pete as well. And Lord knows, personal issues happen during the college years! Pete had a unique way of not accepting what you thought was your best, but pushing you beyond to find even better. Structural sentenc-
es, structural logic, structural priorities were common to mold this simple Seneca County farm boy into more than I thought I could be. Heck he even critiqued my haircut and sideburns one time, telling me I looked ridiculous. I asked my fiancé at the time if she agreed with Pete, and she did. But only said so, after Pete threw my hair cut "under the bus!” I do credit Pete for molding my passion for cows into teaching me I could use that passion to build a professional life. And, he showed the sincerity of those teaching lessons by keeping in touch with me my entire working professional life. An email or a phone call, just to get my opinion on something, but more so to see how I was doing and how proud he was of my accomplishments. The intrigue he had for the Select Sires ART program was obvious and he asked me challenging questions or provided thoughts that most times were very relevant. My last venture with Pete was picking him up to go see his just fresh, early Jedi he bought from Select Sires as a calf, and a recent purchase of a very nice Bayonet. He was beyond proud to own these cows and others, and reaffirm to me, he was not just another nutty professor. But the icing on the cake was taking him back home via Waldo and convincing me that a fried bologna sandwich sounded good, especially if I'd buy! I'll miss the annual Christmas letter, the out of the blue phone call, and above all, the example he set for expressing pride in his entire family to all, at all times. We first met in 1980 at a state 4-H judging class, and little did I know the impact the man from up north would have on me. Jeff Ziegler OSU ’81-85 Select Sires Inc. ~~~ A few years ago, I was invited to a celebration at Pete's church; I think it was probably for Pete and Jean's 50th wedding anniversary. Up until that point I'd never really thought about how old Pete was and never thought Summer 2015
about him in the context that he was actually a few years older than my parents. He always seemed younger than that to me. I think that is an indication of how well he related to his students and younger generations in general. While some may attest that they put some of the grey hairs on his head (me included), at the same time, being surrounded by students was a "fountain of youth" for Pete as well. Paul Haskins OSU ’90-‘94 ~~~
“His impact shows daily in my life as he taught me how to be a better person as well as being a dairy cattle judge.” Dr. Peter W. Spike will always hold a special place in my heart. I am forever grateful for the role that he played in my growth as a human being. His impact shows daily in my life as he taught me how to be a better person as well as being a dairy cattle judge. Pete educated me on how to handle life experiences without me knowing it at the time. Pete had a way of educating without preaching, instilling humbleness

From left: Pete Spike, Scott Higgins, Scott Drown, Dave Thorbahn and Jeff Ziegler. without humiliating and disciplining without breaking one’s spirit. He could encourage and instill confidence without creating arrogance. Pete led and taught by example. He educated the whole person. When Pete’s name is mentioned or I think of the time that we shared on this earth, I will smile with a warm feeling in my heart, and it might be followed by a chuckle remem-
bering some experience that we have shared along the way. Ultimately it will be a positive thought because of how he taught me by showing me how to be a better Christian, person, son, husband, parent, colleague and citizen. On the National Front As I sit down to write this field work is starting fast and furiously and milk checks are looking a little better. Those attending the National Convention please take note of added educational opportunities at the convention. Feed back is needed as to what Ohio should include when we have the convention in Ohio in 2021. If you are unable to attend, please check with one of our delegates that will be representing Ohio this year; Paul Haskins, Bill Indoe, Ken Janes, Joe Miley, Julie Renner and Matthew Steiner. Elections for the National board will come from the nominations that follow: President, Corey Geiger, Wisconsin; Vice President, Roy Buessing, Kansas and Johnathan Lamb, New York; Region 1 incumbent Steve Keene, Maine; Region 4 incumbent Benjamin Newberry, Georgia; Region 6 Spencer Hackett, Minnesota; and Mike Shiller, Minnesota, will run for the position vacated by Mark Kerndt, Iowa, who will be finishing his second term. Peter Dueppengiesser will
run as the incumbent for the at large position. The HAUSA Board, through its committees, are working to get the FDA to enforce the law that milk is from a mammal and not a nut. The International Marketing Committee is establishing contacts to try to increase markets for Holstein genetics in many countries. The Dairy Price Stabilization Program is being looked at again as a way to secure a more constant price for our milk. The Complete Program continues to grow as, by far, the best way to get the most best bang for your buck. As the summer show season begins enjoy time spent with family and friends. The Registered Holstein cow is the most productive and advanced genetically and it can be seen in the show ring and the bulk tank. Steve Moff HAUSA Director smouric@aol.com or 614-205-7179 OHIO NEWS

The Juniors met at Spring Dairy Expo in March with fourteen juniors. We selected awards for the Ohio State Fair, for class winners and for champions. The juniors always have lots of ideas. Allison McCummons and Keaton Topp will check on prices of our ideas to make sure they are within our budget. They will also have a mixer on Thursday evening of State Fair, with pizza and drinks. We will be inviting the Ayrshire and Shorthorn youth as well. Korey brought up the idea of sponsoring an adult showmanship contest. We will be in contact with Angi Kaverman to discuss this idea. This year, the juniors will have a Junior Quiz Bowl team at the National Holstein Convention. Laurie Menzie is coaching the team; members are Ava, Nora, and Leah Bud-
ny, EveAnne Crossgrove, Colton Thomas, Lilly Elsass, and Lydia Kaverman. We wish them well. We are also asking for parental help in providing transportation for Juniors to Wisconsin. There are still plenty of raffle tickets available. The winner will be selected at the conclusion of the Holstein Show at the State Fair. Winners will receive their choice of $1000 or a one-year lease of a 2020 7X24 Black Wilson trailer. Tickets are available from junior members or the Ohio Holstein office. They are $10 each or 3 for $20. All the proceeds will go towards the junior programs at the 2021 National Holstein Convention. Just a reminder to juniors if you are planning on attending this year’s National Convention in Wisconsin, please notify the office or an advisor as soon as possible.

Hello everyone! As you take a break from your busy lives to read this just know we are all feeling the same way: Excited, stressed and hot. Making sure we have our animals looking the best they can and having everything we need, can sometimes be a lot to handle! The summer is my favorite time of the year, not only because of the temperature and time off school, but because of the many responsibilities I gain each and every year. This is my first summer in the barn without my big brother to boss me around and do most of the heavy lifting. I know mom and dad are extremely excited that Keaton isn’t in the barn as often but that’s only because that means they don’t have to hear us fight over dumb stuff, like what rope halter we are going to use, or who is going
first so the other one can push the heifer in front of them. I thought it was going to be a lot easier just doing it all by myself but when it comes to waking up at 6:00 am to feed pigs and put heifers away, I wish I had someone to do it every other day again. As you may already know my county fair is the same week as the Ohio State Fair, which makes the two weeks leading up to it very hectic! Our trailers make many trips hauling a wide variety of things such as all breeds of cows, pigs, straw, hay, shavings, clipping chutes, etc. Every year I get so anxious to head down to Columbus, so I jump in the truck with my uncle Phillip and dad and we head to Columbus to bed down. Shaking straw continuously for hours is not the most enjoyable thing in the world, but every year I do it all over again. Feeling sore and gross after the fact, definitely gives you a sense of pride. This year is definitely going to be a lot more to handle with a lot less help. Trying to stay clean and look somewhat presentable to pass out ribbons is not going to be a simple task! I am looking forward to seeing and meeting new people at our district, county, state shows and maybe even national convention this summer! Good luck to everyone on this upcoming show season, I hope to see you all at the top of the classes.

Woman of the Year: Suzy Lora, Lorawae Holsteins
The amount of involvement with Holsteins exhibited by Suzanne Lora is far reaching. Beginning in 1976 with her marriage to John (Jack) Lora, she started working on the farm. In the 1980s, they purchased the operation from John’s dad. At that point, Suzy became the “second in command” or Jack’s right hand person. Each day she was responsible for feeding calves beginning with colostrum and ending with carrying warm water to her “babies” long after their appropriate weaning age. She
was the first notice if a calf was feeling off or sick. The strong start she gave the calves translated into healthy heifers and eventually cows that provided the solid herd for Lorawae Holsteins. Suzy rarely missed a feeding or day of chores. Once the calves were fed, she was not afraid to drive a blue New Holland tractor, operate a baler, rake hay, work ground, or chop corn. Outside of chores, she was the CFO of Lorawae Holsteins, ensuring that the checkbook never went far without her
Suzy Lora accepted the award with her daughter, Katy and husband John.

supervision. Suzy was responsible for balancing the books, doing taxes, and registering cows. When it came time for off-farm activities, she was the one who had the patience to teach the difficult cows and heifers to lead. She also always made sure the show whites were stain-free, no matter how much showring dirt they acquired. Suzy also had a knack for baking. This includes everything from butterscotch pie to cookies, brownies, cakes, and any other creation from a magazine that looks appealing. At the county level, Suzy was a 4-H volunteer for 10 years, serving as head advisor of a local club. She also led the Mahoning County Dairy Committee. For 23 years she served as secretary/ treasurer of the Columbiana-Mahoning Holstein Club. Had it not been for her efforts, there were many years where the annual banquet would not have occurred. Each year, she helps to coordinate the Northeast Ohio District Show along with John to donate halters and help keep the show running smoothly. For three years she served as the Secretary to the Ohio Holstein Association. Her minutes are usually detailed and her h a n d - w r it i n g very neat; hence why she is always chosen as secretary. In 2016, Lorawae Holsteins dispersed. Not wanting to sit around, Suzy now works in Outpatient Registration at Salem Regional Medical Center. She also continues to help with field work in her free time.

Yesterday’s Cowpath Leading up to the 100th Anniversary of the Ohio Holstein Association, Barb Lumley will be writing a special column featuring special points in time for the Ohio Holstein Association. Enjoy your walk down Yesterday’s Cowpath. By Barb Lumley The following information is from the catalog for the Ohio State Sale – Holsteins, Wednesday and Thursday, May 5-6, 1937 at 11:00 a.m. each day. I have no information on the owner of the catalog. The sale was a two day sale and show, with all the bulls selling on the second day. Since there are no prices marked for any of the bulls, I have to assume that the owner of the catalog attended the sale on the first day. The cover of the catalog is a dark gray and there is a list of prices written in pencil (no ball point pens in those days) on the back cover. They have faded and are hard to read, however I have been able to make out most of them. The sale was held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, Wooster, Ohio, and was under the management of the Ohio

T-Triple-T Platinum-ET Honored as 2018 Star of the Breed
BRATTLEBORO, Vt.– The highest honor presented to a Registered Holstein® cow, Star of the Breed recognizes outstanding performance in the showring and at home on the dairy. Holstein Association USA is delighted to recognize T-Triple-T Platinum-ET as the 2018 Star of the Breed. T-Triple-T Platinum-ET is owned by Triple-T Holsteins in partnership with Aaron Eaton, Syracuse, N.Y., and Bradley Murphy, Parish, N.Y. Platinum is a mainstay in their show string, and she continually places well in her classes. Nathan Thomas, one of the Triple-T
Holsteins owners, describes Platinum as a true show girl in and out of the barn. “I’ve judged a lot of shows, and I truly believe that really good cows are good every day, not just at the show,” Nathan says. “Platinum is a real easy-going cow – a cow with a good personality. She’s a very balanced dairy cow with a tremendous udder and great feet and legs.” Platinum is from a sought-after family. The Thomases estimate that 80 percent of their Holstein herd goes back to the T-Triple-T Dundee Paige family. Paige has always been dependable and produced
strong, powerful milk cows that consistently do great things. The reach of Platinum’s outstanding genetics spans across the globe. She’s part of a conventional and IVF flush program. The Thomases exported a lot of Platinum’s embryos to Japan when she was a heifer and a two-year-old. T-Triple-T Platinum-ET will be recognized at the 2019 National Holstein Convention Gala Banquet, June 27, 2019 in Appleton, Wisconsin. Banquet tickets are available by registering online at www.2019holsteinconventionwi.com/register.
