On The Cover

As we continue to celebrate 100 years of the Ohio Holstein Association, we continue to go retro with the cover featuring the Ohio Holstein News from October of 1949 where they captured photos from the 1949 Ohio State Fair. A complete description of each photo is on the cover. In this issue we have plenty of show results from district shows and the Ohio Summer Show held in Circleville. We also have a feature on a very competitive OHA member and Barb Lumley has a fitting tribute saying goodbye to Doug Dye of Quality Quest Holsteins. And if you want to enter your calves in the National Holstein Futurity, those entry forms are included in this issue!

SEPTEMBER/OC TOBER 2020

From the Executive Director By Tom Thorbahn

The cooler mornings remind me that fall is just around the corner. Before long, silage will be chopped, and the combines will be rolling through acres of soybeans and corn, completing the fall harvest. The normalcy that we enjoyed our whole lives has changed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many county fairs were smaller or cancelled as was our state fair, along with the fall national shows this year. Many thanks to all those who planned and put together the Ohio Summer Show in Circleville. Congratulations to all the exhibitors who were able to put on a great display of cattle. There are plans to hold the North American Dairy Show in Circleville in October. It seems that it’s been a lifetime ago that I attended that show in Columbus. Thanks to all who are involved with planning this show. From what I have heard, it will be well attended by many great herds from across the country. It will be a great time to visit with breeders from across the US. As we move through the fall, the office will be sending out memberships for 2021, probably, in late October. Remember, you can save on your membership if you renew by December 1. If you get the opportunity to be in Wooster, stop at the office; the new sidewalk is finished and looks great. October 31 is the date scheduled for the Fall Sale in Wooster. There will be springers and fresh cows along with

a few show age animals selling. Also included will be consignments from Diamond Oak, Phil Fisher, as he will be selling a number of fine pedigreed Holsteins. Check the website or Dairy Agenda Today for details and catalogs. The pandemic has also held up plans for the Fall Tour. There has been discussion of a virtual tour of some kind. Once we have something in place, it will be advertised on the website and Dairy Agenda Today. Stay tuned. I am wishing each of you a safe and productive fall.

A Message from the President By Bill Indoe

As Fall starts in this different kind of year, I believe that the Ohio Holstein Members can be very proud of all they have accomplished while living life with the Covid-19 nipping at our heels. First, to the districts that were able to pull off their shows-great job and well done especially for the youth! Next to all who put on, what I was told was the best summer show in the country, congratulations! I have not heard one negative thing and the quality of animals was amazing. Those show results are highlighted in this issue. And now to what could be an even greater show in Circleville as people prepare for the North American Open

Dairy Show my hat is off to all sponsors and organizers! This kind of enthusiasm and resiliency shows what our members are made of! Congratulations to all involved! As far as sales, the Ohio Holstein Association will be hosting the Ohio Fall Sale in conjunction with the Diamond Oak Dispersal in Wooster. There will be fancy show age calves up to milking cows available. Please come and support these breeders and add some solid genetics to your herd. And finally, my son and I were able to attend the Legacy of Quality-Quest Sale for Doug Dye. While what happened to the Dye family was an absolute tragedy, it was amazing to be there to see and feel how a community of friends, neighbors, and fellow breeders support each other. I wish the Dye family continued success in the next chapter of their lives. Have a safe and productive Fall harvest!

The Legacy of Quality-Quest Sale Drew a Large Crowd By Barb Lumley It was standing room only at the Legacy of Quality-Quest Sale held Wednesday, September 2, 2020, as friends, neighbors, family, and strangers came to support the Doug Dye family follow-

ing the tragic accident that took his life. A total of 327 bidders signed in for the sale which included machinery, dairy equipment, and registered Holsteins. The one hundred and sixty (160) registered Holsteins, all ages, averaged $1313.

To a standing room only crowd, Doug’s daughter, Hannah Simpson, welcomed the crowd and spoke a touching tribute to her father. She highlighted his breeding philosophies, and wished people great success with the cattle they purchased from the Quality Quest offering. 8

Hello, my name is Kayla Cring, and I am the 2020 Ohio Holstein Queen. I am 18 years old, and attend Firelands Bowling Green State University. I plan on graduating with a Masters in Healthcare Administration. I am involved in extracurricular activities such as NHS soccer, track, Calvary Baptist Youth Group, and Student Council. This past year I was the President of my 4-H club, Opportunities Unlimited. I did not grow up on a farm. Not to mention I actually knew very little about farms before I got the opportunity to show in the Kiddie Showmanship at my local fair. I was so excited to get the chance to show a cow. Up until this point, I had only ever participated in 4-H for sewing. The next summer

I received a Holstein calf as a gift and showed at the Spring Dairy Expo and Huron County Fair. And that is how I started the hobby I now love. These past months as queen has been tons of fun! I also have some funny memories from some of the shows I’d like to share. It was tricky at times showing cows and doing the queenly duties at the same time. My first memory was when I had to change in a porta pot from show clothes to a dress. This was a great challenge. The next memory was when I left my boots in the tailgate of the truck during a rainstorm. You get very creative in occasions like this. Luckily, I found the hair dryer from the clipping box and had success drying the boots before the show started.

SEPTEMBER/OC TOBER 2020

This time as Ohio Holstein Queen has been fantastic and I am very grateful for this opportunity. I would like to encourage all the young ladies to compete in the future queen contest because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

My farm to me is not just land, where bare unpainted buildings stand To me, my farm is nothing less than all created loveliness. My farm is not where I must soil, my hands in endless dreary toil, but where through seed and swelling I’ve learned to walk and talk with God. My farm to me, is not a place outmoded by the modern race for here I think I just see less of evil, greed, and selfishness. My farm’s a haven – here dwells rest, security, and happiness. What’er befalls the world outside, here faith and love and hope abide. And so my farm is not just land where bare unpainted buildings stand to me, my farm is nothing less than all God’s hoarded loveliness.

Doug Dye: A Good Man & Much More

By Barb Lumley

The words of this poem could have been written by Doug Dye. He loved his farm and his registered Holsteins. The only thing Doug loved more than his farm and his cows was his family. The first time I met Doug was years ago when I and another sale committee member stopped at his farm seeking sale consignments for the Daffodil Dairy Sale. I remember walking through the cows, seeing some good looking Holsteins and one very nice Guernsey. He became a supporter of the sale and always consigned a good Holstein. As I became the announcer for the Holstein show at the Canfield-Mahoning County Fair, I soon learned that if a Quality-Quest Holstein was in the ring, it was going to either win or be among the top group. The animals took your eye and the kids did a nice job of presenting them. I got to know the family better when 16

the first Quality-Quest sale was held, as I was asked to work with the sale and take care of the transfers. Doug sold only his best and the buyers showed their respect and appreciation for Doug’s ability to breed outstanding registered Holsteins with their bidding. A second sale was held later on and once again I helped with the transfers and paperwork, sitting and working at their kitchen table. Micah fed Don ice cream and kept him entertained while I worked! Following the sale, I contacted Doug and asked him if he could help me with a problem. I had sold three bred heifers to a young dairyman who was wanting to get more involved in registered Holsteins. Each had a heifer calf for him. I waited a year and had not been paid anything. I explained the situation to Doug and asked if he would be interested in them, as I was going to take them back. He did not want to buy them, but

SEPTEMBER/OC TOBER 2020

said he would give them a home, as I could not care for them back at my farm. He met me at the young man’s farm with his trailer, we loaded three cows and two yearling heifers (I left one heifer with the young man) and Bar-B-Hills Holsteins went to live at Quality-Quest Farm. That was the beginning of a very special friendship with Doug Dye and his family. Over the years I occasionally purchased a consignment at a state sale and it went to Quality-Quest. Doug took care of my Holsteins just as he did his own and made all the decisions concerning them. My herd had to be sold in 2010 due to Don’s health problems and a lack of help. Doug gave me such a special gift -- he made it possible for me to continue to own registered Holsteins and that meant so much to me. As I sat and watched 160 registered Holsteins pass through the sale ring on September 2, 2020, his expertise at mating and breeding Quality-Quest Holsteins showed in every animal and every pedigree. The love and respect that people had for him was obvious in the large crowd in attendance and support. God blessed us all when he allowed us the privilege of having Doug Dye in our lives. So many times over the last few weeks I have heard the words, “Doug was such a good man”. He was all that and much more.

Summer was different, but still busy!

While the summer hasn’t been full of our regular Junior Holstein member activities, our members were still busy. That was evidenced at the Summer Dairy Show in Circleville. Congratulations to our Junior members who made a fine showing at the Summer Dairy Show! Many of you are now preparing for the North American Open Show that will be held in Circleville in October, and we wish all the best of luck.

It was decided to continue to sell raffle tickets and have the drawing at the Ohio State Fair in 2021. Please let Laurie Menzie know if you need more tickets to sell. Everyone is looking forward to next year with the hopes of things being back to “normal”. With that being said, a meeting will be scheduled for late this year, possibly over Christmas break, to plan for State Convention 2021 and

Spring Dairy Expo. Input is welcome and everyone should be thinking about what they would like to do at Convention and what awards they would like to see presented at Spring Show. We have lots of young members coming up and we need their fresh ideas! Hoping everyone has a safe and happy harvest season. Respectfully submitted, Lilly Elsass, Reporter

Summer has been a blast! Hanging out with the people from the dairy industry has been a welcome opportunity during this unusual time. Here are a few highlights from some of the shows this summer. The District 1 and 2 show in Lisbon,

By Kayla Cring

started the beginning of our cow shows this summer. It was quite a competitive one. Evan Kiko won Grand Champion. Melissa Hart took some fantastic photos at this event while Jessica Whiteleather helped organize things. Next, we all enjoyed the Bucyrus District 9 show with a little bit of rain. Bucks Pride won Grand Champion there. It’s too bad that I left my boots outside during that storm. I sure had a fun time attempting to dry them! Another fun show took place in District 15 in Wilmington. I’m so glad that Hannah Simpson shot some good photos. Hanging out with fellow dairy farmers made this a fantastic show. The summer show was held in Cir-

cleville this year and the new facility was very impressive. The size of the arena amazed many. I am so glad we still had the opportunity for a state show during this crazy pandemic. The summer show had over 1,000 animals entered! Diana Miley helped me organize everything before and during that show. Passing out the many awards was a lot of fun. It was good to see the dairy community at its best while so many other events and fairs were cancelled. It was a delight to attend these shows as the Holstein Queen over the summer. I look forward to seeing you all at the National Holstein Show which takes place in October.

Holstein Association Website Offers Recognition and Connection for Members The Holstein Association website has many features that provide our members with access to our programs and services and keep them updated on the latest Holstein Association news. We are excited to share that two new features have recently been added to the Holstein Association USA’s website to recognize the outstanding cows our members continue to breed and develop. We also wanted to highlight the Holstein Marketplace page, which provides our members with a great platform to market and buy quality Registered Holstein® genetics. New classification and production recognitions The Monthly Classification Summaries and 40,000+ Pound Production Records are designed to showcase top notch Registered Holstein cows and those of you who breed them. Updated monthly, these lists can be found under the Popular Lists section on the website’s homepage. The Monthly Classification Summaries page features lists by month of any cow that classified Very Good-85

or higher in that month, and includes cows which received a Multiple E designation, regardless of age. The report lists the animals’ names, age at time of classification, final score, sire name, the owner’s name and state where they reside, and the report is sortable and searchable. The 40,000+ Pound Production Records page is similar but includes all cows that have a completed lactation record of at least 40,000 pounds of milk, which the Association received in the given month. The report lists animals’ names, age at the start of lactation, milk, fat and protein information, sire name, the owner’s name and state where they reside. This report is also sortable and searchable. In August, the Monthly Classification Summaries list shows there were 42 cows which scored 94 points and two went 95. The August Monthly Production Records list shows 496 cows qualifying for the 40,000+ Production Record Club. The list includes 10 head that completed a lactation of over 50,000 pounds of milk. Congratulations to all our breeders who have

accomplished so much with your Registered Holstein herds! To view the updated Monthly Classification Summaries and 40,000+ Pound Production Records, visit www. holsteinusa.com and look under the Popular Lists section on the website’s homepage. Holstein Marketplace connects breeders Holstein Marketplace is an exclusive classified section on the Holstein Association website that provides members with a simple and affordable way to buy and market Registered Holstein cattle. Ads on the page are broken down into four categories: females, breeding bulls, embryos, and sales/dispersals. At only $25 per month for ads 50 to 100 words in length, Holstein Marketplace is an extremely cost-effective way for breeders to market animals. Ads places in the classified section will appear on the first business day of each month and can be renewed on a monthly basis. Billing directly through members’ Holstein accounts makes the process hassle free and easy to complete. If you would like to place an ad or look at current animals available, visit www.holsteinusa.com, click on the Holstein Marketplace button, and select the Holstein Marketplace Classifieds page. To place an ad, complete the form and email the information to marketplace@ holstein.com.

Winning Isn’t Everything... Maybe

I like to compete.

Richard Indoe is as competitive as they come and in his early eighties, his passion to compete is as fervent as any exhibitor that found their way to the Ohio Summer Show in Circleville, Ohio, at the beginning of August. At Richman Farms in Lodi, Ohio, Richard started his show career with a senior calf, “She was pretty good, and I took her to the International

in Chicago when I was twelve years old. I was second overall and first junior and that was my introduction to big time stuff.” He continued, “That’s where I got bit with the show bug. I was very fortunate, and since then I’ve had a good cow come along, every once in a while.” With an office full of banners, ribbons, and trophies, Richard Indoe has been a little more than fortunate over the years in the show ring. He reminisced about a cow he owned with good friend and local vet, Dr. Robert Siddall. “We owned a few head together and we used to take trips to Canada to look at cattle. We would stop in and see all the big guns up there.” He continued, “We had one cow that turned out

SEPTEMBER/OC TOBER 2020

pretty good. Doc took her in on trade for some work he had done for a client. She freshened with a pretty nice udder, so Doc said he would give me half interest in her if I took her back to our place.” When asked how she did in the show ring he replied with a grin, “She was reserve grand at Waterloo [Iowa] that year.” He added, “We had a couple of pretty hot years out there.” Richard enjoyed exhibiting at the Cattle Congress for years, “Jim Lewis and I selected cattle for the state herd and Ohio won it the last year the Cattle Congress was held in Waterloo before it moved to Madison.” Two years ago, Richard was visiting the John Deere Plant in Iowa and decided to go see the old show arena. “I entered the arena and it was all cleaned up. It was just like I remembered. I walked into the center

Above: Richard not only enjoys breeding Registered Holsteins, he is enjoys dabbling in Texas Longhorns. Right: Richman Farms has done their share of winning over the years. Richard, and his son Bill, are flanked by the awards garnered by the great cattle they have developed.

of the show ring and I stood there and cried.” Tears from good memories? Tears from a heyday that’s long gone? Or maybe those tears well up in a man who remembered the thrill of competition and the appreciation of holding a purple banner in one hand and a great cow in the other. Richard followed in his father, Kenneth’s footsteps in serving the Ohio Holstein Association as its president and was also a National Director for Holstein Association, USA. “Dad was a great believer in Registered Holsteins and anything that supported them,” Richard commented. “I wanted to grow as an individual and the association had a lot of programs that I was interest in and wanted to be a part of.” He con-

tinued, “It opened up a lot of opportunities and I got to meet a lot of people.” Richard’s involvement in the association resulted in judging assignments around the country and across the border. “I judged in Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, and it was extremely educational to see how other people did things in other countries.” When asked what sustained Richman Farms through the years, Richard responded with one word, “Luck.” But his son, Bill, added, “Every dairyman sacrifices time and vacations and other things. You just put everything back into the farm and hope and pray you make it every year.” Richard added, “Dairy farming is a hard habit to break.” Age is just a number when it comes to a competitive spirit. At 82, Rich-

ard led his heifer into second place in a yearling class at the Ohio Summer Show in Circleville. When asked if he was happy with the heifer’s first outing of the show season he replied, “No. We didn’t win.” Winning isn’t everything, but the desire to conquer the challenge keeps you stiving to improve and fuels your ambition to reach beyond your potential. The one thing that embodies a man who has carved out a life on a farm that has supported four generations of the Indoe family can be summed up by Richard’s declaration; “I like to win.” Richard and his sons Bill and Tom Indoe along with Bill’s son, Tyler, run Richman Farms where they are developing deep pedigreed cow families of all breeds.

On the National Front This report will be short, but there are some good things happening in 2020. There was a very good response to the offer of free registrations, with well over a thousand coupons returned for the possibility of 10 FREE registrations each. The virtual member update held June 25th had over 100 watching and listening and it is still available to watch at your leisure on the Holstein USA YouTube channel. Though we were unable to have a Spring Show or a State Fair, we did have a FANTASTIC summer show in Circleville. Things seemed almost back to normal as Jamie Black placed 218 in the Black and White Show, Moss McCauley had 72 in the Red and White show and Brian Kelroy lined up 133 in the Jr Show. It was an enjoyable time for all. The National Show Committee will meet in October and the full Board will meet in November most likely both will be via Zoom.

Yesterday’s Cowpath As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Ohio Holstein Association, Barb Lumley will be writing a special column featuring special points in time for the Ohio Holstein Association. Enjoy your walk down Yesterday’s Cowpath. By Barb Lumley The following is from Holstein-Friesian History Diamond Jubilee Edition – 1960 Maurice S. Prescott, Editor Holstein-Friesian World with Melvin Scholl, Breeder-Herdsman-Author; Henry Hiram Wing – Professor of Animal Husbandry Cornell 19031928; William A. Prescott – Associate Editor Emeritus Holstein-Friesian World. THE ROMANCE OF THE SHOW RING The World’s Columbian Exposition at Chicago in 1893 was the first World’s Fair at which Holsteins were exhibited. Of much greater importance to the show ring history of the United States through the years than the World’s Fairs have been the great national and regional shows. The first of these was the National Dairy Show which was held with three herds in Chicago, February 15 to 24, 1906 with three herds in competition---W. B. Barney & Co., Iowa, George Rice of Ontario and A. J. Williams of Wisconsin. Barney’s fa-

mous winner, Jewel of Home Farms, who won his first grand championship as a 2 year old at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha in 1898, was the outstanding grand champion, with female grand championship going to Canada on the Rice entry, Daisy Texal 2d. There were no calf classes, nor junior champions. They were added the next year. The 1907 National brought out larger numbers but not quite up to expectations. It was the only time in the history of the National that a bull calf won grand championship. Thirty two (32) years later a junior yearling bull would win grand championship honors over his own sire. At the third National in December 1908, Colantha 4th’s Johanna, the champion producer of the world, was on display. Her milk sold at fifteen cents a glass and was in great demand as a novelty feature. At one time a man of wealth visited Springvale, the Gillett farm, determined to buy this world’s record cow, finally offering $3,500 for her. Mr. Gillett, as was his custom, consulted his good wife, and then returned to the barn to inform the visitor, “We have come to the conclusion that a good many people have $3,500, but that no other person in the world has a cow like Colantha 4th’s Johanna and we are going to retain that distinction. The cow is not for sale”. In 1916 the National became a road show, traveling to numerous cities and states. In the depressions years of 193233-34 the National was suspended. The show at Waterloo was recognized as the National Show. In 1917 and 1918 Columbus, Ohio was host to the National and erected their modern coliseum on the fairgrounds. The success of the second year there was greatly marred by the influenza epidemic that was sweeping the country, as well as war conditions. R. E. Haeger, Illinois, was the outstanding winner both years with Minerva Beets continuing her series of championships. In 1917 Oak De Kol Ollie was grand champion male from Iowana Farms, Iowa. The winning Get of Sire group, composed of four mature bulls is still regarded

as one of the most sensational ever shown in this class. It was the first instance at the National of a grand champion also siring the winning Get of Sire. An effort was made to revive the National Dairy Show again in 1935 at St. Louis and the 1935 one was the last one held there. After that for the few remaining years it once again became a road show. Again in 1938 the National Dairy Show was held in Columbus, Ohio, just twenty years after its first appearance there. Thirty exhibitors from 10 states and 2 Canadian provinces displayed 176 head. Illini Princess Mabel Lad (Michigan State Institutional Herds) first prize 3 year old won his 8th straight grand championship. Cornell Ollie Catherine (Cornell University) was grand champion. With 1,152 lbs. of fat she was the highest record grand champion of the breed in the whole history of the National. The 1941 National Dairy Show at Memphis, Tennessee proved to be the final show and the National Dairy Association, its sponsor of record was disbanded soon after. The second great national annual dairy show to be established was the Dairy Cattle Congress at Waterloo, Iowa. It started as a display of purebred dairy cattle in connection with the State Dairy Association meetings. Veteran Holstein breeder, W. B. Barney pioneered the movement and was the moving spirit during its nascent years. In 1911 the event was known as the Iowa Dairy Show and attracted 500 entries. In 1912 the name Iowa Dairy Cattle Congress was selected. In later years it became officially known as the National Dairy Cattle Congress but was affectionately referred to by breeders as the Waterloo Show. THE ALL-AMERICAN IDEA An interesting development in connection with the Holstein-Friesian cattle has been the annual selections of All-American winners, sponsored by the Holstein-Friesian World. The idea was born in 1922. Following the 1921 show

season the World featured a Show-Cow-of-the-Year selection. This aroused so much interest that it was decided to attempt for 1922 to designate the top animal in each class at the shows of the year, following the same idea as the All-American football teams chosen in those days by Walter Camp. The first year the selections were made by W. S. Moscrip, who had judged several of the top shows, assisted by M. S. Prescott, Editor of the World. In 1939 the present system of selection was set up. Under this plan the breeders submit to the World, pictures of the winners at state, regional and national shows. A small committee of judges then meets and sorts out what they consider to be the six best in each class. An All-American, Reserve All-American and Honorable Mention is chosen in each class. The prize judging contest was begun in 1937. The awards were suspended in 1943-44-45 when no shows were held because of the war. Another important change in the all-American rules came in 1950 when competition was limited to U. S. owned animals and to Canadian animals which competed at U. S. shows.

Ohio Holstein Convention 2021 is in the Works! It has been a year with many challenges for all of us, but looking to the future, we are in the process of planning the 2021 Ohio Holstein Convention. District 5 will be our host this coming year and we will keep you up to date in the Ohio Holstein News and Ohio Holstein Facebook page as more plans come together. A group of show coordinators were recognized for their efforts in putting on the Ohio Summer show at Circleville, Ohio. From left: Steve Moff, Julie Zeigler, Angi Kaverman, Erica Davis and Jason Robinson in addition to their families put in tireless hours to make sure the Coronavirus didn’t cancel the opportunity for purebred dairy enthusiasts to exhibit their cattle. Thanks to all of them for their hard work to make the show a success!

Farmers are a special group and they proved that once again as friends of Doug Dye (D-3) lined their tractors up along the path of the funeral procession as a tribute to honor Doug and wave goodbye to their colleague and friend.

A recent article in the Ohio Farmer featured a story on semi-retired dairyman, Alvin Brown of Brownhaven Farms in New Bremen, Ohio. Alvin Brown, who is 86 years old, raises monarch butterflies and is passionate about aiding the dwindling population of the monarch butterfly by supplying food and temporary housing in a non-threatening environment. He collects them as tiny caterpillars, which turn in to the butterflies known for their great migration. He also makes maple syrup and is a landlord for purple martins by preparing gourd houses for them. He is willing to share his knowledge and passion with anyone or any group who is interested. His sons, Lou Brown and Alan Brown work together with their sons, milking 300 Holstein cows at Brownhaven Farms (D-12). Don’t miss out on the Ohio Fall Sale on Oct 31, in Wooster! The annual Fall Tour is TBD. The committee is contemplating how they want to handle hosting an event. Watch the Ohio Holstein Facebook Page for the latest details. Congrats to Tim Gunkelman (D-8) for being voted the Wayne County Junior Fair King!
