Greetings, Pennsylvania Holstein Breeders This issue of Profiles is a review of the Pennsylvania Holstein Convention, Spring Show and the many sales that occurred in the last few months. The stories include the Hall of Fame Inductees, Robert and Jane Pepple and Kevin and Gerarda Burleigh, the Distinguished Young Breeder, Michael and Maria Yoder and the Pioneer Memorial Award, Lawrence L. Neely, Jr. family. The Pennsylvania Holstein Convention is an enjoyable time seeing friends, this convention added a new element Debbie Cornman of excitement. Thursday evening’s event is the Annual Fun Auction to help raise money for the Pennsylvania Junior Association to help youth with their activities. Several Holstein members who are very talented created beautifully hand craft items to donate to the auction. Thank you for your contribution to the Junior Fund. This year there was a contest to see who would be the Best Bid Taker. The participants taking bids were John Wetmore, David J. Lentz, Thad Sturgeon, Ken Umble and Michael “The Donald” Yoder. All had fun and Thad Sturgeon won the award. There are many wonderful ads in this issue by the Pennsylvania Holstein members sharing news about their cows and family. Enjoy! Pennsylvania Holstein will be holding a Summer Picnic on Saturday, August 27th at Four-Zag Hill Farm, Rosalie Zaginaylo family in Berwick, PA. Take a day off to visit with Holstein friends and see and completely new facility See GREETINGS - Page 12

Pennsylvania Holstein Awards The Pennsylvania Holstein Association presents the Hall of Fame Award to a member of the association recognizing an individual or couple for their achievements and contributions to the Holstein Dairy Industry as well as their involvement and leadership in other agricultural and community activities.

Robert and Jane Pepple Hall of Fame Inductees Our first inductee in 2016 into the PA Holstein Hall of Fame are Robert and Jane Pepple. Bob and Jane started farming on Bob’s family’s commercial herd where Bob milked and managed 360 cows and Jane fed and cared for calves and milked occasionally. In 1972, Bob and Jane established Pep-L-Lea Holsteins in Oxford, PA in Chester County. Pep-L-Lea Holsteins was established after buying a 180 acre farm from Bob’s family. A milking parlor was constructed with 72 freestalls. A group of 70 registered cows was purchased from Bob’s family’s commercial herd with only papers and no milk records. Bob and Jane’s first decision was to go on official DHIA testing. The second major decision was to classify. Of the original 70 cows 2 were from AI sires, six were sired by a son of Thonyma Ormsby Senator and the rest “just had papers”. The first classification had 7 cows scoring Very Good. One was a Hilltop Apollo Ivanhoe daughter, CHOPTANK APOLLO MISTY, who scored VG-88 that first classification at nearly 8 years of age. MISTY eventually scored 2E EX-92 EX-MS, had 4 records over 1,000 pounds of fat and had 4 VG daughters. Bob and Jane bought cattle to improve the herd. They received help and advice from a good friend the late J.Lloyd Ebersole. Over the years Bob 8 - June 2016 - PA PROFILES

and Jane housed cattle for Lloyd as well as owning cattle in partnership. Another good friend, Harold Bare described Bob and Jane as hard working and “down to earth” people. Harold said Bob would be in the field working and Jane would be milking and managing the cows. But, they both worked on pedigrees and breeding decisions. Harold Bare recalled that the Pepples had a tremendous group of Elevation daughters. At one point half the Pep-L-Lea herd was sired by Elevation. Bob and Jane would breed their best cattle to sires that would create interest in the AI industry, sending young bulls to Atlantic, Sire Power, Mid-West, ABS and Carnation. They also sold bulls and heifers privately and some were even exported. Scott Cooper of York County purchased registered cattle from Bob and Jane while he was still a student at Delaware Valley College. Later on Bob and Jane leased the farm and sold cows to Tom and Joy Crothers. Some cattle also went to Rod Bare of Swan Road Holsteins. Jane and Bob are both Penn State alumni where they participated on the dairy judging teams, were very active in their fraternity and sorority and deeply committed to the Penn State Dairy Science Club. Both Bob and Jane have served as delegates to National Holstein Conventions. They have also served on planning committees for National conventions in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh as well as state conventions. Both have served as directors of the Chester County Holstein Association, with Jane serving as a State Director from Chester County for many years. Bob and Jane have been a couple working together for many years. They complimented each other on the farm as Bob concentrated on field work and Jane was working with the cows. But this couple also has their own interests. Bob was able to keep the home farm going as Jane became the “ultimate volunteer” at the local, county, state and national levels.

Jane and Robert Pepple Hall of Fame Jane especially has been dedicated to youth programs by coaching judging teams and educating 4-H dairy club members on the techniques of showmanship and fitting. For many years Jane helped coach the Chester county dairy judging team, including 3 teams that were state champions. When judging showmanship and fitting, Jane tries to give recognition to all youth who have mastered these skills, not just those at the top of the class. Jane states. “I want all youth to have the opportunity to learn. To improve their skills and excel.” This passion was fostered in her as a youth and it grew stronger every year. In Jane’s final year of 4-H she made it to the PA State Junior Dairy Show, a goal that took many years to achieve. It is that determination, dedication and persistence that she strives to share. She remembers that she “didn’t have the best animal in the ring” but she had the opportunity to do her best with her animal in showmanship and fitting. Striving to follow the 4-H motto to “make the best better” is what she hopes to convey to youth who are involved in 4-H and FFA programs today. For more than 40 years, Jane used her personal experiences, love for people and cattle and her passion for judging, showmanship and fitting to influence youth at the AADS. She

first became involved in AADS when asked to serve as the showmanship and fitting judge for the State Junior Dairy Show on several occasions. Jane was part of the photography crew for both Jack Remsberg and Billy Heath during the week-long event. In 1997 Kathy Walton organized the Premier Junior Showmanship Contest and Jane was the first Senior Division Showmanship Judge; the following year she judged the Junior Division. Since then she has landed a position as an assistant in the Junior Division Showmanship Contest. Kathy says Jane was asked because of her “unbiased, fair, honest and caring spirit. Jane and Bob have donated the embroidered director’s chair for the Senior Division winner every year of the contest. Jane also assists Judy Black with the Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, a competition held on Monday of the AADS for 4-H, FFA and Collegiate teams. Jane has been active in many aspects of the PA Holstein association. She has chaired the Nominating and Hall of Fame Committees, the 100th PA Holstein Famous Cow Committee, the Anniversary Book committee. Jane has received the 2007 PA Junior Holstein Association “PAL” Award, an award selected by the Junior member to thank individuals who are committed to educating and influencing youth. She is also a recipient of the Distinguished Services to Agriculture in Chester County Award. In 2012 Jane received the Image Award and in 2014 Jane received the Obie Snider Award at the AADS. Bob and Jane Pepple have worked in the dairy industry all of their lives. By working together on their farm they developed a great herd of cows and also by working together they have volunteered in various activities in the dairy industry at the local, state and National levels. On behalf of the dairy industry we thank you! Bob and Jane. Even though Bob and Jane Pepple are no longer milking cows, their love of good cattle and their respect for dairymen and the industry are just as strong as when they began more than 40 years ago. Congratulations to you, Robert and Jane Pepple, the 2016 Hall of Fame Award winners.

Kevin and Gerarda Burleigh Hall of Fame Inductees The story of our newest inductees into the Hall of Fame starts with Kevin Burleigh who was born in Pleasant Mount, PA in Wayne County. He is a 1970 graduate of Forest City Regional High School. Kevin has been working with cattle since he was young and started dairy farming after graduating from Forest City Regional High School in 1970. Kevin was also an AI technician for ABS in the 1970’s. He is an avid hunter of deer and turkeys. In 1978 he made one of the best decisions in his life as Kevin married Gerarda Carey. We all know the stress and strains of dairy farming and raising a family. But Kevin and Gerarda have excelled at both. Kevin and Gerarda Burleigh farm at Bur-Le-Acres Dairy Farm in Wayne County where the fields are hilly and the growing seasons are short. Amidst the challenges of living in Wayne County the Burleighs have managed to farm and develop many quality Holsteins. The Bur-Le Acres Farm was the first dairy herd in Wayne County to attain a RHA of 800 pounds of butterfat in 1981. In that same year Bur-LeAcres had a RHA that was ranked in the top 10 of the state of PA. Kevin Burleigh has been a member and director of the Wayne County Holstein Club for over 30 years. Kevin was Sale chairman and barn superintendent for the Wayne County Calf sale in the 1980’s and 1990’s. By knowing pedigrees and cow families Kevin has been able to breed over 50 Excellent cows and developed another 50 excellent cows that he has purchased over the years. Kevin has bred 2 EX 94 point cows….Bur-Le-Acres Counselor Camay and Bur-Le-Acres Outside Olivia. He also developed 2 other EX-94 point cows. He has bred 4 EX-93 point cows as well. Kevin’s first homebred Excellent Holstein was Bur-Le-Acres Persuader Peg. Peg became one of the main foundation cows of the herd as she was the matriarch of five generations of Excellent cows none of which were ET’s. Bur-Le Acres has bred several All-PA and All-American Holstein nominations. The most notable nomination to date has been Bur-Le-Acres Markwell

Kevin and Gerarda Burleigh Hall of Fame Kit-who was 3rd Sr. 2 Year old at Madison in 2007 exhibited by Co-Vale Holsteins in New York. She was Honorable Mention All-American Sr. 2 Year old that year. Kit was purchased as a calf by a 4-H’er for $700.00. In fact, Kevin and Gerarda are well known for selling VERY, VERY reasonably priced calves to youth to start their 4-H careers. Many of these animals have been successful at shows on the local, state and national levels. In the 4-H community Bur-Le-Acres has hosted many farm picnics and workshops over the years. The Burleigh family encourages and assists the local youth as they mature and grow in the dairy industry. Bur-Le-Acres is not all type and show cattle. Bur-Le-Acres Will Winnie was a 300,000 pound lifetime production cow. Winnie was sold as a 10 year old cow in the 2003 herd dispersal to Joe and Sandy Pavelski and lived another 7 years making a lot of milk!!! Bur-Le-Acres has had 2 dispersals: the first in 2003 and a second sale in 2011. Kevin and Gerarda are milking again. They have bred an Excellent cow in 3 different herds and also developed 3 separate herds to a BAA of 109 or higher. At the first Bur-Le-Acres sale, BurLe-Acres Counselor Camay was sold to Scarlet-Summer Holsteins, son, Jarrod, and Marsha Burleigh in Lycoming County. Camay went on to score 4E-94 and the Integrity calf she was carrying ended up scoring Excellent. The Integrity has since had a Terrason score EX. This completes 6 generations of EX., all home bred with one switch of the prefix from father to son. The perfect example June 2016 - PA PROFILES - 9

of passing a torch!! Cattle with Bur-LeAcres prefix provided the seed stock for Scarlet –Summer Holsteins which now has over 40 EX and is breeding in the same tradition as Kevin Burleigh. Cow families with great pedigrees are interesting to watch as they mature and develop. Kevin and Gerarda Burleigh have mastered the development of great pedigrees in the barn AND in his family. Kevin and Gerarda have three adult children. Many of you know the oldest son, Jarrod Burleigh and his wife Marsha of Scarlet Summer Holsteins. Jarrod, a Delaware Valley College graduate, is a dairy nutritionist for Royal Advantage when he is not in the dairy barn with Marsha. Jarrod and Marsha have 2 children, Alex age 12 and Madison, age 9. Cameron (“Macky”) is just a year younger than Jarrod and lives next to the Bur-Le-Acre farm in Wayne County. “Macky owns Burleigh Construction. In fact we are extremely thankful to Macky for getting a working/milking crew together at home so that Kevin and Gerarda could be here this evening. Macky is married to Jen who is an English teacher. Macky has 5 children….Wesly 13, Ellie-11, Jeremiah-6, Rose-4, Ike-3 and the 6th baby due in May. Kevin and Gerarda’s youngest is daughter, Andrea who was high school valedictorian in 2011 and graduated summa cum laude this past May from Lycoming College with an English Degree. Andrea is currently pursuing a second college degree in music at Lycoming College. Kevin and Gerarda are active in church and community activities. Kevin is an active member, lector and choir member at St. James Catholic Church. Kevin shares his talent of his great bass music voice by singing in church, nursing homes, weddings and parades. Both Kevin and Gerarda have worked together on the farm. For anybody that has ever visited Bur-Le-Acres you don’t leave hungry. In fact some people say that if you live within a 5 mile radius of the Burleighs that you are never hungry. The bigger the gathering the more fun Gerarda has preparing the feast….whether it is the first day of buck season, holiday meals or epic Super Bowl parties while the boys were in high school. Gerarda handles the day to day parts of the household like no other. 10 - June 2016 - PA PROFILES

Bills are paid instantaneously. Calves are registered before their dam is done licking them off. And the check book was always balanced. Sons Jarrod and Macky had a ritual where they would watch their mother, Gerarda, balance the check book. Now if there was a slight error in the arithmetic the boys would dive under the table and “take cover” until Mom found the error and life in the Burleigh household could continue. Now one last thing… sitting at the dinner table in the Burleigh household is a real treat. Your side will hurt from laughing too much as you listen to Kevin’ stories and corny one-liners AND your stomach will hurt because you ate too much of the delicious food prepared by Gerarda. Gerarda’s cooking is great but specifically her pies are known far and wide. Every milkman, semen salesman, hoof trimmer and repairman that ever happened upon Bur-Le-Acres left with a pie. When Allan McClure was a classifier he nominated Gerarda’s pie for a committee score of EX-97. Gerarda’s pie was later passed by Dave Page and Steve Neely becoming what we believe to be the only “committee pie”. Finally a quote from Dave Rama who managed two herd dispersals for the Burleighs.… “Kevin Burleigh is one of those people you seldom hear about but everyone should try to emulate. An astute cowman with the uncanny ability to select an immature heifer and project her potential for the future. Many thoughts when I think of Kevin and his lovely wife Gerarda (Perhaps the greatest pie maker in the world!); Integrity, devoted family man, excellent steward of the land and cattle, gracious, humble, work ethic, positive, loyal and the list goes on and on! Having managed two Herd Dispersals for Burleigh Acres and knowing Kevin and Gerarda Burleigh for over 30 years I can tell you there are few in the business who have immersed themselves as deeply in reviewing pedigrees and cow families than they. A very deserving award to a man I have respected for years, Congratulations Kevin!” Congratulations!!... Kevin and Gerarda Burleigh! The 2016 PA Holstein Hall of Fame Award Winners.

Maria and Michael Yoder DISTINGUISHED YOUNG BREEDERS

Maria and Michael Yoder Distinguished Young Breeders The Pennsylvania Holstein Association 2016 Distinguished Young Breeder Award recipients are Michael & Maria Yoder from Belleville, PA. They are the proud parents of 4 children: Natalie, Paul, Grant and Cade. Their journey in the dairy business started in December of 2007. Michael began working for Lester & Ray Yoder (not related to Michael) with the intention of buying the herd of cows. In January of 2009 they purchased the 242 Registered herd including 117 milk cows. Lester & Ray Yoder financed the purchase which was paid off in four (4) years. Lester & Ray leased the farm to Michael & Maria and provided the crops for the dairy operation. The Holstein herd, DryHouse-M Holsteins, was established in January 2007. Since purchasing the farm they have made many improvements, most all geared to cow comfort and their ability to manage their entire farm operation. They have done a major renovation of the barn, including new lighting, curtains, waterers, ventilation updates, added a manure pit and a small pack barn was added for special needs cows. Today they milk 180 Registered Holsteins with a rolling herd average of 24,758M 937F 738P. The herd includes 19 Excellent Cows, 82 Very Good cows and a BAA of 107.1. They have received the Progressive Genetics Herd Award 5 times and have 14 cows currently on

the Holstein locator list. They participate in the Tri-Star premier program, and they currently genomic test 80% of their animals. They flush the very high unique-pedigreed animals; breed the remaining top 25% to high genomic sires. The remaining heifers are bred to high-type sexed semen or used as embryo recipients. They use Holstein Complete and that has helped them identify those animals that have merchandising potential. They have sold animals through local, state and national consignment sales and are able to sell surplus cattle and bulls locally because of the registration identification work and overall herd management they do. They plan to host a Production Sale at the farm in the five (5) or so years. Michael began his career in the dairy industry on the Dairy Genetics & Marketing staff of Genex Cooperative. Maria is a nursing instructor at Geisinger-Lewistown along with being a mother and farm wife. Their children have begun to show an interest in the farm with Natalie already having received Junior All-PA recognition. They were named the 2012 Mifflin County Farm Family of the year. They served as Young Cooperators through Land O’Lakes at the National Milk Producers Federation annual meeting. They have hosted many tour groups, school groups and participated in research projects with Penn State University. Frequent contributors to social media, they paint

a picture of the professional family farm as stewards of their community, animals and land.” Registered Holsteins and the opportunity to give back to their community through their time and talents will definitely enable Dryhouse-M Holsteins to have a bright future. They take an enthusiastic interest in breeding better cattle and being involved in community activities. Pennsylvania Holstein Association is proud to recognize Michael & Maria Yoder as our 2016 Distinguished Young Breeder Award Winners.

Lawrence L. Neely, Jr. Pioneer Memorial Award The Pennsylvania Holstein Pioneer Memorial Award is given posthumously to an individual for their contribution to the Holstein Industry at the local, state and National levels. The 2016 Pioneer Memorial Award goes to Lawrence L. Neely, Jr. Lawrence L. Neely, Jr. who many of you know and fondly remember as “Jim” Neely. Jim was born on April 27, 1926. He was one of five boys in the family. Jim Neely together with his wife, Dorothy, was a successful dairyman, farm equipment dealer, Holstein enthusiast and dairy advocate. Jim started milking cows by hand in the 1950’s. In 1960 , when their barn burned Jim milked cattle in a rented facility in nearby Knox, PA for about a year before selling the herd to a farm family in West Virginia.

For the next decade Jim was part owner in L.L. Neely & Sons Oliver equipment dealership and raised a herd of polled Hereford cattle. With a goal of rebuilding their dairy herd, in the mid-1960’s Jim purchased Holstein heifers for his oldest sons as 4-H projects. In fact, Jim milked an offspring of Neely-farms Ivanhoe, a daughter of Penstate Ivanhoe Star, by hand for more than a year before the new barn was complete. In 1970, Jim and Dorothy finished their dairy facility and assembled a new herd of Registered Holsteins. Jim purchased a group of bred heifers from Lyle Stevens in Cochranton, PA that added to the foundation of the new herd. Among these were Stevensdell B Eagle Denise, EX-90 GMD and Stevensdell B Eagle Ava, VG 85, both sired by Paclamar Black Eagle. Producing high quality milk was a priority for Jim and he regularly received quality awards and bonuses from Mong’s Dairy. He did the little things to make the best product possible. Jim was one of the founders and leaders of the Clarion County Holstein Club in the 1950’s. Jim and Dorothy hosted Twilight meetings for club members and area farmers at their farm. The club was later expanded to include both Clarion and Venango counties. Jim along with Cliff Snyder, Jerry Brown, Russ McHenry and others was instrumental in starting Town and Country Day in 1972 an event that the Clarion –Venango Club hosted annually for more than 30 years. Jim and Dorothy helped to establish

the Clarion-Venango Dairy Princess Committee in 1971. Jim’s Neely-Farms herd prefix bred 9 Excellent cows, 5 Gold Medal Dams and 8 Dams of Merit. He worked with PHA on many district and state consignment sales as both a buyer and seller. In 1981 when Jim sold his milking herd, he engaged PA Holstein Assoc to sell the cows. Then, PHA director of sales, Mike Weimer, and PHA staff member, John Howard, sold the Neely Farms herd to the Ernest Staebner family, Blue Slope Farm in Franklin, CT. The group included an EX-91 Creek, an EX-91 Jet Stream and Excellent daughters by Lawcrest Marvex and Plushanski Persuader. Jim continued to raise replacement heifers for several years after selling the dairy herd. He sold cattle to dairyman in more than eight different states, including: An EX-92 Indian-Hills Senator Flame daughter to Purdom Dairy in MO. An EX-91 Jemini to Jim and Kim Grove in Huntington, PA. And an EX-90 Jemini to John and Susan Howard, Willow Street. Jim was a member of PHA and served as a state director. He was also a lifetime member of the HolsteinFriesian Association of America. He participated in registration and classification programs, regularly attended state and national Holstein conventions. Jim and Dorothy were also members of planning committees for state Holstein conventions held in the Northwest PA district. Jim bred one bull for stud, NeelyFarms Gay Haymaker, a son of Harrisburg Gay Ideal out of an EX-90 Astronaut daughter. The bull was purchased by Harry Roth representing the Atlantic

Breeders Coop in Lancaster, PA. Jim was a good cow man, Holstein Breeder and an active community member, but perhaps his most important contributions to the Holstein Industry was through his family. All will agree that in the Holstein business the real proof of a great sire is in the progeny. Jim and Dorothy are the parents of 3 sons and 2 daughters. They have 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Jim encouraged all of his children to become involved in dairy and Holstein activities, attend college and pursue careers that included agriculture. Much of Jim’s legacy is through his children and the example he set for them to follow, deeply-rooted in agriculture, dairy and Registered Holsteins. Sons Doug, Rick and Steve are all Penn State graduates, each earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Industries. Doug worked for the Commonwealth of PA for 36 years, first as herdsman for the dairy herd at Polk State Hospital and for the PA Department of Environmental Protection Oil and Gas Regulatory Program. He served as a 4-H leader for more than 25 years. Doug was involved on the family farm later operated by sister Cindy and brother-in-law Mike Weimer. Doug regularly volunteers his time announcing local and district 4-H and Holstein Shows. Rick and his wife, Amy, worked with Jim and the Neely Farms herd from 1975 to 1981. Rick spent the rest of his career with Ag Choice Farm Credit. Rick has volunteered for many years at the Crawford County Fair Dairy Shows. In addition to his Penn State degree Steve Neely, earned a Master of Science from the Univ. of CT in Dairy Cattle

Management with an emphasis on genetics. Steve served as sire analyst for Sire Power for many years and is currently a Holstein Classifier. Beth Raney graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Home Economics Education. Beth has been employed by Penn State Extension for more than 30 years as a professional development coordinator. We all know that Beth is married to Ken Raney the Executive Director of PA Holstein Association. Cindy Weimer, graduated from Penn State with a degree in Agricultural Economics. She worked for the Holstein Association in Harrisburg before starting her 30-plus year career in dairy promotion with the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association. Cindy is married to Mike Weimer who is currently a Holstein Classifier. Jim Neely was always very involved in his local community. He was an active member of the Salem Reformed United Church of Christ. Jim was a member of several lodges, the Knox Area Ambulance Board of Directors, the Venango Tractor Club, the Venango County Development Committee and was on Keystone District School Board. Jim enjoyed showing Holstein cattle at local county fairs and shows. In his later years he became and avid golfer. Jim’s example of hard work, high morals and simply enjoying each day rubbed off on all of his children. Friends and family who knew him were always greeted with something funny and departed his company laughing. He was a true friend, father and Holstein advocate. From the President’s Umble “Udderings” - Ken Umble Desk — PA Holstein President

Hello to all of you Holstein enthusiasts. It is an honor and humbling to serve as your PHA president for the next two years and I hope I do not disappoint you. As I begin to put some thoughts on paper I need you to know that writing is not a skill of mine, but I will try. The good news is that I married-up: Marilyn is a good proofreader! Pennsylvania Holstein Association is a great organization filled with many, many people who give up their valuable time to make the association run smoothly. I want to thank each of you who have accepted the responsibility to chair our standing committees and also each of you who has been asked to serve on these committees. Your name was personally suggested by a member of the executive committee who thought that you would have helpful insights in that area. I would love to have input from a large segment of our membership on each of these. If you feel that you would like to help on any of the following and were missed, please call me! The committees and chairperson are as follows: Activities – Michael Yoder; Show – Thomas Uber; Sale – Nathan Ulmer; Youth – Irene Osborne I was glad to see such a great turnout of cattle, exhibitors and spectators at the spring show at Harrisburg in March. What a spectacular display of bovines! I am impressed with the work that goes into getting an animal ready for the show ring and you all did it well. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in hearing about some unethical practices and theft that took place during the show. When we have to cheat to win we have just lowered the authenticity of our own cattle and the breed as a whole. I have a grandson who is starting in 4H and I hope that he can win honestly, but more importantly, that he just has a good time with his 14 - June 2016 - PA PROFILES

National Holstein Director

Wow! It’s National Convention time again. Our New York friends are planning a great convention in Saratoga Springs, New York. I encourage you to attend part, or all of the events and meetings if possible. If you are unable to attend, and have ideas or concerns pertinent to Holstein, share them with a Pennsylvania delegate who will be attending the annual meeting. Following are a few highlights from the National Association. Effective May 1, 2016, recovery, transfer and freezing forms will not longer be required to register calves resulting from embryo transfer or in vitro fertilization. In lieu of recovery forms, Holstein Association will be requiring additional information when submitting ET or IVF calf registration applications. Updates have been made to the EASY ID software, and customers are urged to download this version. Overall, the Holstein Association activities remain brisk for the first quarter of 2016, despite a very sluggish dairy economy. The Board of Directors at the spring meeting in Windsor

Locks, Connecticut, approved several recommendations from the Genetic Advancement Committee. 1. HAUSA update its body score composite based on the new research from USDA multi-state Feed Efficiency study. 2. Continue the research project from recording the incidence and severity of digital dermatitis by classifiers. 3. Encourage CDCB-USDA to collect hoof health information from on farm computers for the creation of a national data set, and the development of genetic evaluations. 4. Declare Cholesterol Deficiency as an undesirable recessive and records appropriately in the Association database. As mentioned before, Holstein has embarked in a major Information Technology overhaul. While it is off to a good start, members need to be reminded this venture is a multiyear project, and patience and understanding from members will be necessary. For the latest and most up to date news from Holstein Association USA, read your Holstein Pulse or go to Holstein’s web site. Contact our very capable Holstein field representatives, Sandy McCauley 717-371-7353 or Matt Lawrence 724-877-5154 with any questions or assistance that you may need. Have a HAPPY and HEALTHY summer! John

Dear PHA, To say “Thank You” for the honor you bestowed upon us as inductees into the PHA Hall of Fame doesn’t seem to fully express our appreciation. We were humbled by such an honor, totally overwhelmed and Kevin was completely surprised. Thank you to Dr. Pat Kitchen for all your hard work in preparation for the awards program. Congratulations, also, to fellow Hall of Fame inductees Bob and Jane Pepple, the Young Breeders Award recipients Mike and Maria Yoder and to the Neely Family, as Jim was honored with the Pioneer Award. Also, a big Thank You to Ken Raney for all that you do for PHA. You are always kind, friendly, helpful, a true gentlemen and a great asset to the organization. At Bur-Le-Acres, we’re still trying to breed “the good ones”. On our last classification in March, Bur-Le Acres Aftershock Ariel scored EX-91 in her second lactation and our BAA is 109.2 May God Bless everyone with a happy, healthy and safe summer. Yours truly, Kevin and Gerarda Burleigh

Thank You Dear PA Holstein members and friends, Surprised! Humbled! Grateful! are a few words that express the many thoughts and emotions we felt when named to the PA Holstein Hall of Fame. We were definitely surprised! We never expected this! We have admired the men and women who have previously been recognized with this award. Many have bred note-worthy cattle, and developed outstanding herds; others have made lasting contributions to the association. We congratulate Kevin and Gerarda Burleigh who are most deserving of induction into the PA Holstein Hall of Fame. We want to thank family and friends from Blair and Chester counties who traveled to Greensburg to surprise and support us. We are humbled by this recognition. To think that someone felt us worthy of nomination, and then to take time to write our story, humbles us. It, too, is humbling to think that a committee of our fellow PA Holstein members voted us into the Hall of Fame. We are grateful to the PA Holstein Association and to the people with foresight more than one hundred years ago to found this organization. We are grateful for the opportunities this association has afforded us; opportunities to learn through meetings, conventions, and field days; opportunities to merchandise cattle statewide, nationally and through export. We are grateful for the leadership of the PA Holstein Association, and are blessed by the Chester County dairy community. However, the greatest blessings for which we are most thankful, are the many friendships formed with Holstein breeders and members of the dairy industry. We are honored to know and to work with you. We sincerely thank you. Bob and Jane Pepple

HELLO’s and GOODBYE’s In 2015 we said goodbye to Rolandice Bunker “Miriah” 4E EX-92 (F&L score 100 by Dave Page.) DOB 5-17-98 – 10-29-15 – 17 ½ years old and she was still the boss cow. She was very good at giving us bull calves. I have one Damion daughter in the herd now and 2 granddaughters. Miriah’s Lifetime record was 6,385 Days, 360,450 Milk, 17,250 Fat, 15,460 Protein. She was truly a favorite, just not the same without her.

But, then we were blessed with 2 new additions in 2015.

Her legacy will live on here through several daughters by Acme, Gold Chip, and Uno. Sanchez’s daughter, Marfady Acme Classy is scored VG88 with her second calf and will be an easy excellent cow next time she see the classifier.  Obituaries  Robert “Bob” C. Brown Our hearts were broken on Friday, April 15, 2016 when well-known Dairy Farmer of Peck Hill Farm, Robert C. Brown, 69 of Merry Go Round Road passed away.
