Candid photos were taken by Debbie Cornman, Editor from the PA Fall Championship Show of the many young breeders who participated at the fall show. The center photo L-R Holly Hlavaty, Donald A Seipt, Grand Champion - Ms Daisys Gold Dreamer-ET, Bryant Hlavaty and Donald V. Seipt.

Greetings, Pennsylvania Holstein Breeders The artist in me loves the rich colors of fall, bright yellow, gold, orange and the many shades of red. These colors urge me to head to my studio to paint some landscapes. Hope you take some time to enjoy the colors of fall. Congratulations to the All-PA and the PA Fall Championship Show winners this year. A few other PA Holstein members have received honors and awards recently, Doug Boop, Millmont, PA was presented with debbie Cornman the 13th Merle Howard Award for his hard work and dedication with his cows in the barn and show ring at World Dairy Expo. Also, Dale and Deanna Bendig, Gettysburg, PA were presented with the 26th Klussendorf-MacKenziie Award at World Dairy Expo. We have a very inspiring story by Jean Kummer about Reese Burdette, her journey, determination and persistence to keep moving forward to participate in life and living to her best. I hope her story will help to encourage you and your family to continue on your life’s path and to be the best you can be. Thoughts and prayers go out the families or Janice Derr, John Doll, Jr., Patricia Landis, Stanley Oldham, and Howard Halstead for the loss of their family member. Continue to pray for the agriculture and dairy industries, See GREETINGS - Page 21

Ken’s Comments by Ken Raney

What a great summer for Pennsylvania Holstein. We had outstanding representation and many winners at the National Convention in New York. There was excellent participation and interest in our Regional Shows and Fall Show. Once again proving that great people with identified cattle have many opportunities to succeed. We had a very successful Summer Picnic in August. There were over 250 Holstein members and friends who came to Four-Zag Hill Holsteins for a great day of visiting and fellowship, viewing a brand new dairy facility and an outstanding herd of cows. We want to especially thank Rosie Zaginaylo and her entire family for their great hospitality and warm reception everyone received during our picnic at their farm. With November comes a new membership year for our Association. We are again pleased to work with six (6) companies who are offering discount opportunities to our paid members. Those companies include: NASCO, PaulB Hardware, Select Sires Inc., Hoober Inc., PBS Animal Health and Richard Mellinger Semen Sales. We will send out coupons to paid members who then can receive discounts through the companies listed above by presenting the coupons to the company representative that visits your farm. Please be sure and thank these businesses for their support of our membership program. We have had a very successful program of state consignment, local consignment, dispersal and private treaty activities. Sale highlight from this summer and fall can be found throughout the magazine. There are a number of consignment sales listed if you would like to participate as a consignor or buyer, please let us know. If you have cattle to market, please let David Lentz know, private treaty marketing through your state Association is an excellent way to benefit both you and your Association. 6 - November 2016 - PA PROFILES

We have people looking for cattle at this time, please give your staff the opportunity to assist in your cattle marketing program. We would like to thank all our supports and donors who financially support our many programs and activities during the year. We have many companies and individuals whose donations help many of our programs including awards at shows at the local, regional and state levels, donations of feed and supplies for sales and many sponsors who help with our many activities and our youth program. Your generosity enables us to conduct our programs throughout the year to benefit the dairy industry! Plans are well under way for our State Conventions to be hosted by the breeders of the Northeast District. The juniors will meet from February 3-5, 2017 while the adults will meet from February 23-24, 2017 both conventions will be at the Hilton Scranton Conference Center, Scranton, PA. Check the articles in this issue of Profiles and watch the farm press for more convention information. Mark your calendars and plan to attend, the conventions and annual meetings are your opportunity to have your thoughts and ideas presented and discussed. Pennsylvania junior members are reminded that most contest deadlines are January 3rd. If you need any contest entry forms, please contact your local Youth Chairperson or the state office. All contest forms are available at the PA Holstein Association website at www.paholsteins.com. We hope junior members will participate in as many of the contests as they can. Convention is a lot of fun, we hope to have many new Juniors active in our contests this year. We have copies of our history book “Cows, Farms & Families – 100 Years of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association,” and 18” X 24” prints of “Peaceful Pastures of Pennsylvania” featuring the seven famous cows of Pennsylvania available for purchase. They make excellent Christmas gifts! Check for the order form in this issue of Profiles. We know the demands for your time and money are very tight at this time in our industry. Pennsylvania Holstein Association appreciates the time, effort and sacrifice many of you give to our Association. We hope that through the programs and activities offered at the local and state levels, our Association will continue to meet your expectations. We have many programs for both adults and youth that we hope offer ideas and ways for you to enjoy your chosen occupation of dairy farming. We encourage you to continue to be involved in your Association; your ideas and actions are what make this Association work. We hope to see you at a local activity this winter.

Some of Life’s Best Gifts Come in Small Packages Written by Jean Kummer

As we enter the season of thanks, we are reminded how one of our own little Holstein girls is the gift that keeps on giving. Most will be familiar of the story of Reese Burdette, the daughter of Justin and Claire, sister to Brinkley, and granddaughter of James and Nina of Windy-Knoll-View Farm, Mercersburg, Franklin County. On Memorial Day 2014, a fire broke out in Reese’s room at Claire’s parent’s, Michael and Patricia Stiles, of Waverly Farm in Clear Brook, Va. Ms. Patricia went through the fire to rescue Reese, and they were both badly burned, while Michael pulled Brinkley to safety. They were taken to Winchester Hospital, and from there Ms. Patricia went to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., where she spent two months recovering from her burns. Reese was life-flighted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Isaiah 40:29 Reese, then seven years old, spent the next 662 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, or PICU, at Johns Hopkins. She was kept in a medically-induced coma for more than four months, which was a small blessing for her to escape the pain of the burns covering 35 percent of her tiny body, and all the ensuing procedures. She suffered cardiac arrest five times, and endured two open-heart surgeries, countless skin grafts, the amputation of her left leg below the knee, severe lung and kidney damage, chronic infections, and all but 28 percent hearing loss due to harsh antibiotics. She was poked and prodded daily, and had a nurse and respiratory therapist in her room 24 hours a day/seven days a week. After awakening, she had extensive physical and occupational therapy to rebuild the strength just to sit up on her own, long before she could think about beginning to walk on a prosthetic leg. It was hard and painful. But her

From the start, even in those darkest hours, Reese awed her doctors and nurses with her strength and resiliency. How did she defy all these odds? How did that tiny body fight the onslaught of physical insults? It was through medical science, her sheer will to live, and the power of prayer. Lots and lots of prayers.

“Do I make myself a blessing to everyone I meet?” – singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile. The relationships Reese and the entire Burdette and Stiles families built with the people at Johns Hopkins run deep. During the nearly two years of residence, Justin and Claire, and all three sets of Reese’s grandparents - Jimmy and Nina, Michael and Patricia, and Neal and Melinda Dufford along with her aunts and uncles, never wavered in their faith in Reese to keep going. They fought and advocated for her to ensure the best possible care and treatments, all while building rich, personal relationships with the surgeons, physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists – as well as the custodians, security guards, and even the valet attendants at the hotel where at least one family member stayed every single night. They bonded with and shared tears and compassion with countless other families who came through the PICU – some whose stories ended like Reese’s and some whose stories didn’t. When Reese woke up it didn’t take long for her to charm the medical staff herself, as her family had already done. Her tenacity, sense of humor and quick wit won everyone over quickly. business, brought her treats and gifts, and welcomed many celebrity visitors. But most of all they believed in her – and her family – and loved her, as evidenced by the hundreds of hospital staff who attended her farewell party on March 17, the night before she was finally going home. Party-goers included her trusted and beloved surgeon, Dr. Dylan Stewart, Director of Pediatric Trauma and Burn Program, and her cardiac surgeon, Dr. Luca Vricella, the Chief of Pediatric Heart Transplantation. She gave these world-renowned, brilliant men a detailed lesson on how to Snapchat on their cell phones so they could all keep in touch after she went home. She truly was a blessing to everyone she met.

was preceded by pep talks from her dad and showmanship tips from the sidelines from Pap Pap Jimmy. Many tears of joy flowed from her fan club from the dairy industry, and her new family from Johns Hopkins who came to the show, led by her dedicated critical care physician, Dr. Kristen Nelson. When asked what was the best part of showing at the AllAmerican, she paused for a few seconds and replied, “I was very proud of Pardi Gras for getting fourth place. I wasn’t expecting that!” She also cited Pantene’s Reserve Grand Champion win as a highlight, but “hanging out with my friends” was right at the top of the list of favorite things at the show.

“All creatures great and small…the Lord God made them all.” - Cecil Frances Alexander

While Reese’s body still has some healing to do, she makes progress each day. Her lungs are getting stronger, she’s requiring less oxygen, and is being weaned off the trach. Her kidneys are still the battleground with daily dialysis required, but she’s conquering her prosthetic leg (that she calls “Leggo”). She’s also learning to adjust to the cochlear implant to help improve her hearing. She laughingly says, “I’ll be able to hear as good as a dog smells now!” once the implant is in full operation. On a recent visit to Johns Hopkins in September, one of her cardiologists gave her heart a clean bill of health. He said with a smile, “Reese, we’re finding it increasingly difficult to come up with excuses to bring you back here to visit us.” Reese has reached a celebrity status that may well span the globe – with people within the dairy world and outside of it. God continues to work through this child everyday. The knowledge gained by her medical team through oftenunchartered treatments has benefited other sick children across the country. Her spirit, fearlessness and zest for life give hope to other families who are fighting similar battles. Yet, she remains delightfully unaffected and filled with an innate graciousness in spite of all she has been through. She loves to laugh, tell a good joke, and is a voracious reader. She knows more about medicine than the average person should know, much less a nine-year-old, and she never complains about her situation. She gladly poses for pictures with strangers who have followed her story, with a friendly smile and a handshake. Reese and her family will never know the depths of which she has inspired people. She herself truly has no idea what a blessing she is because she’s just busy living her life as a regular little farm girl.

Reese’s hospital room was decorated in varying shades of purple, her favorite color, with pictures of her family, friends and classmates, and with oodles of gifts, cards and packages from across the country. Nothing, however, was as prominent as the pictures of her beloved Holstein, WindyKnoll-View Pantene – as a calf, heifer and cow. One of her very first conversations after being slowly awoken from the coma was with her dad Justin when he teasingly asked if he should sell Pantene. She vehemently shook her head and said, “No!” Her “MoMo,” (grandmother Nina) recalls the first thing Reese asked her when she woke was, “How’s Pantene?” The Burdettes knew it was a stretch, but they talked the hospital staff into granting permission to bring Pantene to downtown Baltimore to be reunited with her favorite human. In spite of the traffic, lights, medical equipment and lots of urbanites who had never been so close to a cow, Pantene, led by Justin, walked right up to her little person and never flinching, never side-stepping, never wavering, allowed Reese to reach out and touch her face and take her halter. It was as if Pantene knew what the expectation was and she rose to the occasion, and the connection between the pair was clear. The reunion was so healing and therapeutic for that little farm girl trapped in the city. It was a moment for the memory books – for everyone involved.

“Where we love home – home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes

“God is within her, she will not fail.” – Psalm 46:5

Going home was the driving force for Reese’s recovery. She hasn’t missed a beat in school, thanks to excellent tutoring while still at Johns Hopkins, in addition to a robot that connected her from the hospital to her classroom in Mercersburg. She now rides the bus to and from fourth grade each day (with a nurse), participates in field trips, and all other school activities. This summer, she went to the beach with her South Carolina family, rode amusement rides at her cousin Regan’s county fair in Virginia, started tap dancing, and worked hard on her goal of showing Pantene’s March calf, Pardi Gras, and Pantene herself at the Premier National Junior Show in Harrisburg in September. And she did it. Her triumphant return to the show ring

From the President’s Umble “Udderings” - Ken Umble Desk — by Dean Jackson PA Holstein President Together, we have As I located my Carhartt jacket yesterday, I realized we may be approaching the last of our Indian Summer Days so I will need to keep that jacket more accessible. Summer and harvest is behind us. Where did it all go so fast? Soon we will be wishing we could have stored up some of that heat for the cold days ahead. We had an excellent growing season that we must be thankful for but I’m sorry to know that some of your areas were not so blessed. One of the reason our summer seemed to disappear was due to spending 15 days in Alaska. What a beautiful and relaxing vacation! Marilyn has endured 40 years of putting up with me so this was our 40th anniversary reward! I also got to spend a few days in New York enjoying the National Convention which a great event. The folks in NY did a superb job of hosting and If PHA can do similar in 2020, then we will have done well. It is always fun to catch up with friends from across the nation and hear of issues and challenges in their areas. Then there were a few county picnics that I enjoyed attending. I was impressed with Lancaster and Lebanon Counties who pull off their events without a hitch and have 600-800 farm and non-farm folks in attendance. Well done, folks, even if the main speaker doesn’t show! And for those of us who found our way to Rosie Zaginaylo’s farm for the state picnic, it was well worth the drive. Thank you, Rosie and all who helped make it a great event. Our grandson, Grant, showed in 4-H for the first time this year and did very well. It was fun helping him halter break, train and clip his calf. She did not win the class but he still had fun learning to know the other club members and is already planning ahead to next year.

“Dundee” has been a barn favorite since she was a baby calf and we think that Nadine shows the same kind of potential as a young cow. Nadine calved at 1-09 with a Gold Chip heifer calf, is bred back with her 2nd calf as a Sr. 2 yr. old with a Solomon heifer, and is making a nice trouble-free record. She will see the classifier in February and we are looking for a nice first score on her. She will be IVF’d in December for September calves. Inquires welcome on this great young cow.

Marfady Dundee 2073 EX-93 94-MS Special Thank You goes out this time to all neighbors, friends, and family that came and assisted us in our time of need. For those that don’t know, we had at 24 x 80 corn silage silo, recently filled, collapse on September 17th. No people, cows, or structures were damaged thankfully and cleanup and salvage moved as good as it possibly could under the circumstances. Within 46 hours of it collapsing, approximately 1200 tons of feed, staves, and steel were sorted and stored accordingly. We are so very blessed be involved with the greatest group of people on the planet; The Farming Community!

Born September 28th, 2016, 10:19PM 9 lb 8 oz – 22 in

We welcomed Lincoln into this craziness that we call Life. Being involved with agriculture today presents its own unique set of challenges for families, but for Nicole and I, we wouldn’t want to raise our children any other way. We are also starting a new business venture with freezer pigs and fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving, along with our continuing passion for working with high quality registered Holstein and Jerseys.

2016 Summer Picnic and Open House

2016 Summer Picnic and Open House

The Pennsylvania Holstein Association state picnic was a great success with over 230 Holstein members and friends visiting Four-Zag Hill Holsteins, the Zaginaylo Family of Berwick, PA. Those attending had the opportunity to look over the Four-Zag herd of Registered Holsteins. Many came to see the new 80 cow bed pack dairy barn and step-up parlor recently completed by Zaginaylo family. There was a lot of interest in the design and functionality of the barn. The Zaginaylo family including: John, Laune, Michael, John and Rosie were gracious hosts to all and had the herd and their farmstead ready for all to enjoy. There was time to visit with friends and neighbors over a picnic lunch and people were able to judge three (3) classes of cows to test their judging skills.
