As a registered Holstein breeder with a herd of 70 cows, longevity has always been very important to me. Being a small farm, I could not rely on milk production alone to pay all the bills; merchandising has been a necessity. In order to have surplus heifers to sell, I must have cows that remain in my herd and last several years. In looking through the information on proven bulls and young sires in use today, how many bulls are from older cows that have stood the test of time? - very few! Many are from first or secondlactation cows that have been pushed for that big record, scored, flushed and often never heard from again. Her selection as a bull mother has been based on 12-24 month results. If longevity is what is wanted and needed, look to the cows that have lasted, produced good records, bred back every 12-13 months and kept vet bills to a minimum. These are the kinds of cows that should be bull mothers. They are the kind that keeps the farmer profitable. Every herd has at least one, but you wont find her on a sheet of paper with “numbers. You have to go out to the herds of the hard-working Holstein breeder, who depends on his cows for his living to find her. - Mark Leid

- My Philosophy, no cow should be a bull mother until she is at least five years of age and has had three lactations. By that time, you know if she has the longevity to be a profitable individual.

We have a two-year-old fresh Pety daughter out of this amazing cow who definitely looks promising and stand out among our herd. Cows like Kathy are the reason for our passion and persistence in the industry.

We have started a New Year; hopefully it will be one of less rain and better prices for the products we sell as dairy farmers. Your Association through its Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Standing Committees plan activities and programs that we hope will improve your abilities as a Holstein breeder and dairyman to remain viable in the years to come. Membership campaigns are in full swing at the local level, if you have not renewed your membership by the cut-off of February 15 membership benefits will cease including receiving PA Holstein Profiles, Farmshine and registry discounts with Holstein USA. Make sure to invite a neighbor or friend to join the Association, it benefits everyone when we have a strong membership! Our State Conventions, for both adults and juniors will include programs and activities that will be educational opportunities that we hope will offer insight into improving your home operation. The conventions are being planned and hosted by the breeders of the Northwest District. The Adult Convention will be held March 1-3, 2019 at the Park Inn by Radisson, West Middlesex, PA. The juniors will meet February 1-3, 2019 at the Ambassador Center, Erie. Both conventions will include opportunities to see what’s new in the Holstein industry as well as visit and network with breeders from around the state. We encourage all members to attend the convention and participate in the programs and activities. This is your opportunity to express your ideas and be involved in the business of your Association. Pennsylvania State Holstein Convention March 1-3, 2019 The breeders from the Northwest District would like to invite everyone “For the Love of Holsteins”, the 2019 PA Holstein Convention. The convention is being held at the Park Inn by Radisson in West Middlesex, PA. The Convention starts on Friday, March 1st with the PA Holstein Board of Directors meeting. The afternoon will include the 106th Annual Meeting of the Association. We are expecting a good group of Commercial Exhibitors and will have a Dairy Bar with lots of goodies to enjoy while visiting with friends from across the state. The Pennsylvania State Convention Sale, set for Friday evening, March 1st will start after a buffet dinner at the hotel. The sale this year will be a multi-media video and picture sale, with no live cattle at the sale. Consignments are being finalized, and sale information will be highlighted on our facebook page: PA Holstein Association. Saturday, March 2nd will start with our annual Awards Breakfast. We will recognize members who have excelled in the show ring, with their breeding programs and those who have served the Association through membership work. There will also be a Fun Auction with items donated by Holstein breeders and businesses to benefit Pennsylvania Junior Holstein activities. Following the Awards Breakfast and Auction, there are two excellent tours to choose from. Tour A will include visits to Plum-Line Holsteins, the Carey Family and Apple-Shamrock Holsteins, the Waddell Family. Plum-Line Holsteins in Titusville, Crawford County, started by C. John and Janet Carey in 1969, have bred and
developed over 100 Excellent cows. Mike, Pat and Ryan Carey formed a partnership in the 1980’s and purchased the farm from their parents in 1999. They had to diversify so we could keep everyone at home, they started a trucking business, Carey Brothers Trucking, which has a fleet of trucks that mainly haul logs across the state. Mike oversees that part of the business, while Pat is with the cows daily, and Ryan is the on-farm mechanic who keeps all the equipment running for the dairy and trucking business. The Carey’s also farm 1,000 acres, growing all their own forages and grains, selling cash crops beyond what they need to feed their herd. The Plum-Line herd consists of 75 milk cows, have about 90 total adult cattle and raise all their own replacements. The cows are averaging 90 pounds of milk a day, and the RHA is about 22,000. The barn has 66 tie-stalls plus eight box stalls, and the cows are turned out to an exercise lot daily. They are very active in the show ring, garnering many All-PA and Junior All-PA animals along with several AllAmerican and Junior All-American recognitions. In 1976, Rob Waddell started Apple Shamrock Farm when he was 19 with his father, Robert E. Waddell, and his mom, Lorna. Today Rob, his wife Chris and their son Josh own and manage the farm. In the early days on the farm in the 1980s, Chris said a day in her life revolved around getting the milking all done and caring for her family. Today the day-to-day chores are done by 25 full-time and part-time staff, allowing Rob, Chris and Josh to manage the growing business. “We are a three-way management team,” Chris

said. “Any big discussions involve all three of us.” The Waddell’s now farm approximately 2,200 acres and house about 1,150 Holsteins. The milking parlor has grown from four singlestalls to a double 20 parlor. The primary crops grown on the farm include corn, orchard grass, soybeans and alfalfa. Tour B will include stops at Ernst Seeds and Channellock. Ernst Conservation Seeds, grow, process and sell hundreds of species of native and naturalized seeds and live plant materials for ecological restoration, sustainable landscaping, reclamation, wetlands and natural resources conservation. Native plants are vitally important to ecological restoration, and are increasingly seen as the best choice for use in almost every scenario. Today, with over 9,000 acres in production, Ernst grows hundreds of diverse crops for conservation, ecological restoration, beautification, energy feedstock and wildlife habitat. Future growth opportunities can be seen in increased public and governmental interest in sustainable landscapes, lowimpact development, responsible rec-
lamation and restoration, pollinator habitat, improved biodiversity and evolving practices in conservation agriculture. The extended Ernst “family” has grown to approximately 90 full-time employees. Channellock is best known for its pliers—the company manufactures more than 140 types of pliers particularly its eponymous style of tongue-and-groove, slipjoint pliers. Its pliers have distinctive sky-blue handle grips, the company has been using the same trademarked shade of blue since 1956. It also produces cutting pliers, linemen’s pliers, long nose pliers, adjustable wrenches, screwdrivers, nutdrivers and special-purpose pliers, as well as multi-function tools for the fire service and other first responders. Channellock is managed by the fourth and fifth generations of the DeArment family. The company is based out of two facilities, totaling about of 230,000 square feet in Meadville. As of 2010, the company claimed to be the largest employer in Crawford County, with over 500 employees. Both tours will include lunch and an opportunity to visit with fellow Holstein enthusiasts as you travel. On Saturday afternoon, we will have a “Paint Your Own” event for those who want expand their artistic side. Vintage Vogue Furnishings Volant, PA will be working with our Paint Party. Using a hand-crafted wooden tray, milk paint and a little imagination, participants will create a one-of-a-kind “noodle board”. The tray is the size of a standard stovetop and consists of a handle on each side. The finished product will have a rustic farmhouse charm! Several stencil options will be available to if so desired. This will be a great time to catch-up and take home your own creative art work. A lovely evening is being planned for all at the Convention Annual Banquet. A highlight of the Banquet will be the presentation of the Hall of Fame Awards. This recognition is given annually by the Association to members who have served the Association, the dairy industry and the community with their time and talents. We will also present the Pennsylvania Holstein Pioneer Award and the Distinguished Supporter Award. A dessert bar and visitation time concludes the evening. Sunday, March 3rd will feature a light breakfast and an opportunity to hear Pete Rostosky, a former Pittsburgh Steeler, who has a very inspirational story to share. Pete grew up on a farm near Monongahela, PA, graduated from the University of Connecticut and spent 1983-1987 with the Steelers. He has gone on to coach high school football and is the owner and operator of Rostosky Coal, LLC, a local surface mining corporation. He is also the owner of Rostosky Enterprises, a business development company. He has also founded and developed Way2BUTM, a motivational program targeted to youth emphasizing their God-designed individuality. Room reservations can be made by contacting the Park Inn by Radisson at 724-528-2501. Ticket order forms and room reservation information is also available on line at www.paholsteins.com; we hope all will join us “For the Love of Holsteins” March 1-3, 2019.

A Time With Tim - Tim Sturgeon
PA Holstein President Another year has come and gone. As I sit down to write this, the first week of the new year, is a time to reflect. I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season. Kathy and I are blessed with seven grandchildren from the ages of 1 to 18. Aunt Erma joined us for Christmas at the age of 101. Her years of wisdom and story telling are priceless. With twenty people gathered around the dining room table, Christmas at the Sturgeon house is always a blessed time of year! The year 2018 held many challenges for those of us in agriculture. We went through prices at historic lows, fellow dairyman exiting the business, and poor weather conditions for so many across the state. We got a historic amount of rain in Lawrence County measuring 58 inches here at the farm for the year. But as we move in to a new year, like we have done before, optimism is the word that comes to mind. Though sometimes that is difficult to do, it’s one of the values that drive us forward. As for The Association, we finished the year on a strong note. An opportunity arose with someone who wanted to use our services to aid in an export order. It was short notice when they called and asked about our quarantine facility. Ken told them about our farm and after a brief discussion, they asked if they could move heifers in the next day. This took place over the Thanksgiving holiday and the beginning of December. I want to personally thank Ken and the help at the farm in Middletown for taking care of this. Also, I would like to thank Vice President Connie Troutman for being in charge of our December State Directors meeting. Due to an accident hunting where
I tore my calf muscle, I was under doctor’s orders not to travel that far for fear of a possible blood clot. It’s healed up very well since that time and the meeting was well attended with many things being discussed. As we look forward to the upcoming months, the Senior and Junior Conventions are fast approaching. This year, the Convention is in the Northwest District. Junior Convention will be February 1-3 in Erie and Senior Convention is March 1-3 in West Middlesex, Mercer County. I hope many will plan to attend. Membership is so vital to our organization. If you have not paid your dues, please do so. Also, we will welcome new members at anytime. Our annual meeting will be held during the State Convention, Friday afternoon March 1st. I want to personally invite everyone to attend as we will be discussing the future of our organization. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the Convention. P.S. People will forget what you say...they will forget what you do...but they will never forget how you make them feel.
