Palmyra Predator B Ruthless, VG-89 Max 2-03 Proj. over 25,000M Dam of high-selling embryos Sunny-Acres TSB Poetic-ET High selling heifer
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many changes for all of us this year. It has been challenging to sponsor in-person cattle sales with so many restrictions, and the ABA Marketing Committee took the opportunity to try something new. The Breeders’ Choice Sale was developed and went online with Cowbuyer, a key partner to the ABA for several years. Bidding began August 27 and completed with the final strike of the auctioneer’s gavel on August 29.
There were 45 consignments, and 23 of them met or exceeded the reserve set by the consignors. Cowbuyer’s Aaron Ray Tompkins explains that online sales are a numbers game, especially if you publish a reserve on each consignment like was done with the Breeders’ Choice Sale. “If you can start at a price low enough to let momentum build, it will get potential buyers interested without scaring them off,” he says. In his experience, Tompkins says that anytime you have reserves set, a sale that sells 50% of the consignments is a success. He also adds that a key factor to the success of online sales if having quality photos and videos for every consignment.
“I’m happy with how it went,” said ABA Marketing Chairman Damian Ullmer. “It was nice to have enthusiasm and interest to promote the breed. It was a group effort to make it happen, and we should all be proud. We can learn something from this sale for the future.”
The high-selling live animal was lot 24, Sunny-Acres TSB Poetic-ET. This Burdette summer yearling was purchased by Delaney, Kalli and Cooper Barber of DeWitt, IA for $3,200. Her dam is an EX-92 2E “Dreamer” with records to 29,000M. She was also named grand champion of the 2019 NY State Fair. The next dam, an EX-94 3E “Poker” daughter has records to 31,520M. “Poetic” was consigned by Greg Evans and Kathy Mahon of Georgetown, NY.
Tami Mueller and Allison and Abby Adrian of Cuba City, WI purchased lot 6 for $2,700 from the Emery Family of Sullivan, WI. Vallowhill Kings Mistress is a summer yearling sired by Bear-Ayr Distinct Kingsire. Her dam is VG-87, and the granddam is none other than Sharwards Calimero Megan, EX94 3E, 4x All-American with over 139,000M lifetime.
Lot 27, Dominaire Bevitari-ET, sold for $2,700 to Kadyn Gibson and Tre Wright of Eminence, KY. “Bevitari” is a fresh Jr. 3-yearold sired by “Double Barrel”. Her EX-91 dam is a 2x All-American nominee with records to 29,460M. She was consigned by Jessica Peter and Garrett Schmitt of Melrose, WI.
The IVF embryos out of “Ruthless” are going to be a RINGER, literally! Aaron Lovstuen of Decorah, IA purchased them for $1,150 each and selected the mating to Blue-Spruce Ringer. We’ll all be anticipating these potential calves as World Dairy Expo champions claim both sides of the pedigree. RINGER is out of De La Plaine Bingo Stinger, EX-94 2E. She was grand champion at the 2019 International Ayrshire Show at WDE, was Unanimous All-American 5-Year-Old in 2019 and has production records to 4-03 365D 30,144M 4.3% 1298F 3.1% 935P.
The dam is Palmyra Predator Ruthless-ET, VG-89 @ 2-09. She is projected to 25,517M 3.9% 1001F 3.0% 744P at 2-03 and was the 2019 Unanimous All-American Spring Yearling. The next dam is the world reknown Palmyra Berkely Ruth-ET, EX-94 2E. Ruth is a former #1 Elite CPI Cow, 3x Unanimous All-American, and 2x International Ayrshire Show grand champion at World Dairy Expo. She has a high record of 3-10 323D 32,060M 3.9% 1256F 3.0% 960P. The embryos were consigned by the partnership of Kurt Wolf, John Cannon, Matt Mackinson and Mary Faber.
The Breeders’ Choice Sale was a great way to test the waters in doing a completely online sale. There were several great benefits for consignors, such as a much lower commission fee. Expenses were reduced as the ABA didn’t have to hire a sale crew, and consignors had no trucking expense getting animals to a sale location. Health tests were done after the sale to only meet the requirements for the state of final destination. There is also great potential to reach a wider and more diverse group of buyers. We’ll look forward to hosting another Breeders’ Choice Sale in the future.
