Differences between China and US education By: Mi Zheng

T 1Ι 2Ι

here are some differences between China and U.S education:

In China, the main goal is to let students learn as much as possible from their books; knowledge is the most important. And in America, students focus on creativity. Students in China stay in same classroom for their main subjects and the teachers come to them. In United States, students change classrooms every period and the room belongs to the teacher. Chinese students take letter grade and standardized test scores seriously.

Page 3

CPCC WORKING IN AMERICA (Advanced English) · Spring 2019

However, that’s not just all. One more difference of Chinese students is they play active and important roles such as sweeping the classroom, scrubbing the steps, serving meals, being class monitors, and helping teacher. Every students needs to take the turn to do that. The last thing that Chinese students do is buy their textbooks each years. They can highlight and write in their books. On the other hand, in U.S textbook are rented to students. They’re not allowed to write in their textbook. In conclusion, this is my personal observation between the two countries.

Latest news in Charlotte By: Giolga Reyes

T

he presence of the Immigration Customs Service of the United States (ICE) in the City of Charlotte NC, United States, has been confirmed. The news paralyzed many emigrants who live, work and study in this city for fear of being detained and separated from their family and their American dream.

Page 4

CPCC WORKING IN AMERICA (Advanced English) ¡ Spring 2019

It is true that said department is in the right to regulate illegal migration to the North American territory and that this function has great importance and has been practiced in previous governments.

The difference is the current President Donald Trump and his administration has been inflexible with many cases that should be studied and analyzed before determining to create a family separation or a deportation. For this reason, we are exhorting all foreign residents of the city of Charlotte to keep with them documents that prove their legality within the American Territory.

Corruption in Nicaragua By: Javier Diaz

n Nicaragua every 30 or 40 years it suffers a dictatorship, now it is happening again. The current President Daniel Ortega is in power again, this time for 11 continuous years. He change the constitution of Nicaragua to be re-elected indefinitely. On April 19, 2018 started the protest for implementation of reform to social security. From that time to today, more than 320 people died around the protest. The protests were banned and the television channel closed by the police for not agreeing with the government. They imprisoned the owner of the television channel and press chief - jefe de prensa. So far, more than 700 people have been imprisoned for participating in the protests.

Is the american dream a reality or just a dream? By: Richard Mabiala You have to be credible to have a good record to stay in the system. People must trust you. If for any reason a negative situation occurs -your fault or not-you are not credible any more. You will be ejected out of the system. To get back in is a very huge challenge. This system of credit can be good because it has a deterrent effect but can also have a devastating effect for the community. This is probably what happened to some homeless I saw. Some of them are former prisoner or did something wrong in the past certainly. They paid for their crime while in jail but when they are out, there is not a company that want to hire them. So, they are paying twice for their debt to the community. In that situation, most of those people are forced to live in the street begging to survival. In the end they relapse. Thinking about this I asked myself why could not these people go to live with their relatives or family? Is it pride or are they rejected by their family too? What do public authorities offer to support these people? Is there a public politic for reintegration?

CPCC WORKING IN AMERICA (Advanced English) ¡ Spring 2019

hat we knew and heard about America when we were in our countries were that America is a great country; a country of freedom and equality where nobody was poor. The day I saw some homeless people, I was very surprised to see those people, native citizens (American), living in the streets begging for their survival. The question I asked myself was how could we have so many homeless in this country while there are lots of places and factories hiring people? I did not get answered at that time. After a couple months in this country, I now understand what happened to some of those guys-the homeless. They are victims of the capitalism system or social system and / or the American culture. My experience as a new immigrant, everything in this country is based on credit; it is the system.

My quest in the USA By: Zoila M. Linares Fujimoto

I

was born in Lima, Peru in the seventies. As a young child, I did not hear or know much about the United States of America (USA) except for an occasional television show like the Oscars or a sport event like the Super Bowl. Later in 1983, my dear auntie Gaby –the one that brings candy and take you to the park on weekends- moved to the United States and my curiosity sprang. I started to read books, magazines, and listen to music. I became obsessed with the idea of living in the USA at 11 years old. I got postcards and photos from New York and Washington D.C. but Disneyworld seemed like a paradise too. My life went on without accomplishing my dream. I became a journalist at 25 in Lima, making minimum wage and enjoying my little job. After a while, my life became dull. So I decided to work on Cruise ships. Speaking English was fun but traveling the world was really fulfilling. Onboard the Cruise ship, I met my husband and had some of my best life experiences. Twenty years later, I finally moved to the USA. It was weird. I felt unprepared and my confidence failed me. Starting all over again seemed the hardest thing I ever had to do. Life with a newborn in a different country away from my love ones looked intimidating. After six years, I find myself hunting hope. Ultimately, I am the same 11 year old girl fascinated by the language and the photos of spectacular cities. Today, I start one day at the time, setting my priorities, caring for my children, and coming to class when possible. The future looks good. My family supports me and I am sure this exceptional country will give us a chance for a fulfilling life.

The history of the Izalco volcano is a lesson in nature Ski in Dolomites

he majestic volcano of Izalco no longer offers the wonderful spectacle of lavas and fires that fed the illusions of some, but it maintains a colossal role. The history of the Izalco volcano dates from the beginning of 1770, the site where the volcano is located was only a dark hole from which sulphurous and black smoke rose. But that hole began to grow rapidly, emerging from the ground, to form a high cone of almost 700 meters, crowned by a crater 250 meters in diameter. Since then, the Izalco was an emblem of Central American geography. In almost permanent activity, the volcano offered a magnificent spectacle of lavas and incandescent rocks spit into the sky, whose reddish flashes could be seen from the high seas by boats, made by what was called the Pacific Lighthouse. The years passed and the Izalco became an attraction for all visitors to El Salvador, especially because that disturbing game of lava and rocks did not cause dangers in the neighboring villages and never extended beyond the feet of the volcano. Attentive to this, in the ‘50s, a group of entrepreneurs decided to build a luxury hotel on the slopes of Cerro Verde, facing the emblematic neighboring cone, with large windows oriented to see the eruptions of the Izalco from up close. They obtained the necessary resources and designed the project as a Hotel, assuming it would be an excellent business. However, one day in 1957 that today many prefer not to remember, when the hotel was already about to be finished, the Izalco ceased to erupt. The geography became infatuated and the volcano put an end to its permanent spectacle of lava and fire, and left unfulfilled the dreams of fortune worked by the entrepreneurs. Cortina has a 1,000-year history, located a couple of hours from Venice, it is like a Disneyland of ski. Dolomites’ Nature as different types of trees, blue sky, clean air share space with a sophisticated hotel, wooden houses, delicious restaurant and many shops where you can find the latest fashion in clothes. After enjoying the 140 km of ski slope, all are invited to stay during sunset with a mug of hot chocolate and see the wonderful mountain changing its color reaching darkness and discovering the other side of Corninas. Houston Astros’ shortstop Carlos Correa will win $5 million on arbitration By: Reinaldo Merino

C

arlos Correa will earn five times his 2018 salary in the upcoming season, due to an arbiter awarding him $5 million dollars in 2019. The Astros’ superstar shortstop was offered $4.25 million before his hearing. The ruling is the first of three this season that are arbitration-eligible for the former All-Star and The American League Rookie of the Year. Correa has had to battle multiple injuries over the last two seasons and lost some games due to his injuries. The Puerto Rican baseball player debuted in 2015 at 20 years old, Correa has a .277 career batting average with 495 hits, 313 RBI’s and 81 home runs. In addition, Correa was an important factor in Houston’s 2017 World Series season. In my opinion, If Carlos Correa wants a better contract the next time with the arbiter awarding him more money, he should be healthy and not lose more than 5 games per season. My first day of Classical Ballet after 21 years. By: Miriam Tahina Mendoza

irst, let me explain what is it Ballet. Ballet or Classic Dance is one form of dance whose movements are based on the total control of the body. In my country, I practiced classical ballet for 5 years ago. I was 5 years old when I started practicing. I had to stop at the age of 10 years old because it was very difficult for my mom to take me to my ballet classes. We were too far from my home and traveling every day was difficult. I had to stop. When I come to America, I started again to practice Ballet at CPCC just a week ago after 21 years later. It was super exciting to start again. Of course, my body is not equally in condition as 21 years ago but I tried to enjoy my practices with ballet. I love the classic dance.

ive years ago, I was in a difficult situation and look for spiritual help in the church. Unfortunately, I was confused because how the of membership communicated with me. Instead of orienting or helping me spiritually, they began wanting to know all about my life and questioned me. During the two years that I attended, I realized that I was not getting any emotional support and spiritual orientation and in return the people who approached me did it for an economic interest taking advantage of my needs. I needed to buy a vehicle and some people from the church reccomendated someone to sell me a car. This person (church) sold me one that was in poor condition one week after I bought it. I thought that church people was honest. When I spoke to the person who sold me the car about the car not working. He expressed that the sale was already closed and I had to solve the problem myself. This situation became an additional problem in my life affecting me economically and deepening my emotional problem, creating a feeling of anger, frustration and distrust for the church. This situation has been a strong reflection for my life, which I am trying to overcome. GOD does exist; the interests and feelings of the humans’ real objective is different than that of the GOD ALMIGHTY’s ways.

World biggest Carnival Kumbha Mela By: Rameshchandra Patel orld biggest Kumbha Mela (Carnival) are in Prayag (Allahbad) It takes place every twelve years, at four places Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik, based on planetary movements. The mela (meaning “fair” in Hindi) has been held in Allahabad city (recently renamed Prayagraj) in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh for centuries now. But it has grown into a mega event in the past two decades. It is expect about 120 million pilgrims to bathe at the Sangam - the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

Kumbha Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred or holy river. Traditionally The Maha Kumbh Mela is celebrated at Prayag after 144 years (after 12 ‘Purna Kumbh Melas’Depending on what position the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter hold in that period in different zodiac signs, the venue for Kumbh Mela is decided. The calculations have been provided, when Jupiter is in Aries or Taurus and Sun and Moon are in Capricorn during the Hindu month of Magha (January 2019-February 2019).

The religious organizations represented range from social welfare societies to political lobbyists. Vast crowds of disciples, friends, and spectators join the individual ascetics and organizations. This is the most auspicious of six bathing days at the event, billed as the world’s biggest human gathering. Durable Memories By: Daissy Ruiz

Page 14 CPCC WORKING IN AMERICA (Advanced English) ¡ Spring 2019

owadays it is common to see photography in our daily routine, we register our experiences and hundreds of photos stored in our mobile devices, despite that a lot of them will finally be transferred into our electronic garbage. The new technologies allow snapshots of these incredible moments live that we obsess about and wish to save as memories; we desire to preserve our vestige in the hope to simple enjoy of the life experience. According to some science studies, this desire is an uncontrolled tendency. "It can alter psychologically the way we perceive the world" during our living history. The necessity to capture our experiences to transmit imagery for generations is a need of humanity. In a brief account through history, different techniques and inventions have been developed. From the cave paintings of prehistory, they are estimated to be around 40.000 years; Egyptian papyri being 2000

years and French paintings almost 609 years of antiquity all in a state of conservation. With the creation of machines, the camera photographic and the camera cinematographic appear to capture high fidelity moments. Remastering the older French photos estimated to be 192 years old and their older films estimated to be about 131 years due to rapid deterioration, the remastering to conserve the both contents has proven to be worth the effort. If you are preoccupied to capture the present to remembering the future, keep in mind that the useful life of digital technology is fleeting. Whatever happens such as an accident could cause all the informational content to disappear and all those invaluable life moments lost. So, my advice is to enjoy your real life and keep in mind that camera photographic and the camera cinematographic are great tools to preserve your valuable memories so you will not be forgotten.
