After the ascent from the understory, trees enjoy abundant light and nutrients in the canopy layer. No longer struggling for scarce resources, they can be content and comfortable. It can be easy to forget where we come from, especially if where we left was filled with toil and struggle. In contentment, it’s easy to trap ourselves in a happy bubble and forget about the troubles in the world around us. But like the trees in the canopy protect precious flora and fauna, we too have a duty to protect those who are still finding their way to where we now happily thrive. The braids in this design are a reminder to appreciate our roots and interconnectedness to those who have sacrificed before us to pave the way for a better life. The leaf motif symbolizes the abundance in our lives and the hope we can offer by sharing our light through openings in the shadows. CAST ON RESOURCES Beginner: Alternate Cable Cast On 1. Make a slipknot about 5â&#x20AC;? from the end of the yarn and place it on the left needle. Cast on one stitch as follows: knit the first stitch, but leave it on the left needle. This counts as the first purl stitch. 2. Rotate the right needle clockwise to create slack in the stitch, insert the tip of the left needle from left to right, and remove the right needle. This counts as the first knit stitch. 3. Bring the right needle under the yarn to the back and insert it from back to front between the last two stitches on the left needle. With the yarn in front, wrap it around the right needle as if to purl, and pull the yarn through to the back. 4. Rotate the right needle clockwise to create slack in the stitch, insert the left needle into the loop from left to right, and remove the right needle. This is the purl stitch. 5. Insert the right needle between the last two stitches on the left needle. 6. Wrap the working yarn around the right needle as if to knit and pull the yarn through the stitches. Rotate the right needle clockwise, insert the left needle into the loop from left to right, and remove the right needle. Pull the yarn to tighten the stitch. This is the knit stitch. 7. Repeat steps 3 - 6. On the first round only, purl the purl stitches through the back loop. Intermediate: Alternate Long Tail Cast On 1. Leaving a long tail, make a slipknot and place it on the needle. This is a knit stitch. Insert the left thumb and index finger between the strands, spread them apart, and turn them up to wrap the tail around the thumb and the working strand around the index finger. 2. Swing the needle to the right and behind the back index-finger strand, and then forward into the index-finger loop. 3. Bring the needle forward over the front indexfinger strand, and then under the back thumb strand and up to catch it. 4. Pull the strand back through the index-finger loop. Remove the index finger from the loop, insert it between the two strands of yarn, and move it away from you to tighten the stitch. This is the purl stitch. 5. Insert the needle into the thumb loop as if to

Insert the thumb between the strands, pull the tail toward you to tighten the stitch, and swing the thumb up to create a new thumb loop. 8. Repeat steps 2-7, alternating a purl stitch (steps 2-4) and a knit stitch (steps 5-7), and end with step 4. Advanced: Two-Strand Tubular Cast On 1. Leaving a long tail, make a slipknot and place it on the needle. Holding the needle in the right hand and both strands in the left hand, insert the left thumb and index finger between the strands, spread them apart, and turn them up to wrap the tail around the thumb and working yarn around the index finger. You may need to place your right index finger on the slip knot to hold it in place. 2. Bring the needle forward under the thumb stand, down under it, and up between the two strands. 3. Bring the needle over the index-finger strand and back under it. 4. Bring the needle under the thumb strand and up to create a knit stitch. 5. Bring the needle over, behind, and under the index-finger strand, and then forward and up between the two strands. 6. Bring the needle over the thumb strand, down, and back under both strands. Bring the needle up to create a purl stitch on the needle. 7. Repeat steps 2 - 6 until you have the required number of stitches. Do not count the slipknot as a stitch. Turn, wrap the tail counterclockwise around the last stitch, and hold it in the left fingers. Double Knit Setup Rows for Advanced: This section is knit flat and will be joined in the round before the ribbing. Row 1: (ktbl, slwyif) to end of row. Drop slip knot. Row 2-4: (k, slwyif) to end of row.

Cast On Using MC, cast on 156 stitches using one of the cast on suggestions below. Suggested Cast Ons (Instructions Included on Page 5) Beginner: Alternate Cable Cast On Intermediate: Alternate Long Tail Cast On Advanced: Two-Strand Tubular Cast On & Setup Rows (Knit Flat)

Section 2: Latvian Braid

Work Rounds 1-3. Latvian braid round 2 causes the strands to twist together, it will untwist in Round 3. Allow more yarn length between project and skeins to allow twists to carry further and not tangle.

After completing cast on, place BOR marker and join for working in the round, being careful to not twist cast on stitches. Slip BOR marker as it appears as an indicator for beginning of round.

Beginner & Intermediate: ( Sm, Work Round 1 ) 7 times. Advanced: (Sm, Work Round 1 ) 5 times.

Cut yarn, leaving an 8â&#x20AC;? (20cm) tail. Draw the yarn tail through the remaining live sts and pull to close top of hat.
