estival season is the perfect way to spend any summer away with friends, and why not combine it with some travelling whilst you’re at it?! Here are some picks from locations all over Europe that may tempt you away from that standard beach holiday… Primavera Sound 2017 Where: Barcelona, Spain When: May 31-June 4, 2017 With 16 years of experience behind it, Primavera Sound is one of the most respected and well received urban festivals. Set each year in purpose-built seaside Parc del Fòrum, the festival has hosted some huge names over its history. Last year saw the likes of The Black Keys, The Strokes and Ride headline across the 3-day Spanish festival. Acts from previous years span from Run The Jewels to Disclosure and Blur to Wu-Tang Clan, so there really is something for everyone at this eclectic music celebration. Of course, the location of Barcelona its self is another bonus, with afternoon sets often leaving time for added site seeing or beach lounging. www.primaverasound.com Rock Am Ring/Rock Im Park 2017 Where: Mendig/Nuremburg, Germany When: June 2-4, 2017 Starting in 1984 with Mendig’s Rock am Ring, the festival later gained sister event as Rock Im Park in Nuremburg was initiated to combat the demand increasing demand. And now with a huge 150,000 combined capacity, these two festivals draw in rock fans from all over the world. These simultaneous festivals bring some of rock’s biggest bands to play over 3 days, with headliners from recent years including Foo Fighters, Metallica, Kings of Leon and The Prodigy. Not only do these festivals cater for the heavier listeners amongst you, but also those indie pop/rock fans with the likes of Bastille, Palma Violets and Jamie T all having graced the German rock stages. www.rock-am-ring.com
Dancing festival season away Secret Solstice Festival 2017 Where: Reykjavik, Iceland When: June 16-18, 2017 Taking place over the summer solstice, this festival makes perfect use of all that sunlight. The long summer days are celebrated in Reykjavik, and what better way to spend them than at Se-
Side of stage experience for Tame Impala at Spain’s Primavera Sound cret Solstice Festival. The beautiful Icelandic backdrop forms the setting for over 150 acts over 3 gloriously long summer days. An eclectic mix of electro, indie and folk artists celebrate the solstice in style alongside the 10,000 festival goers who have all flocked to the city for 72 hours of sunlight. Deftones, Disclosure and Of Mice and Men are just a few of the acts that have featured in the festival’s 4 year history. The success of this festival continues to thrive, and no doubt that 2017 will see another special weekend of festival fun in the solstice sun. There’s not many places you can enjoy midnight in the sun after all. www.secretsolstice.is Open’er Festival 2017 Where: Gdynia, Poland When: June 28-July 1 Arguably, up there with some of the biggest names in the festival circuit, Open’er Festival persistently creates huge line ups for the 4 day-weekend on Poland’s Pomeranian coast. 2017 is set to be no different. Early bookings include the likes of festival giants Foo Fighters, Radiohead and singer-song writer James Blake, suggesting the Polish event will once again live up to its incredible reputation. From Foals and Pharrell Williams, to Skepta and The Last Shadow Puppets, this festival aces its variety too. This festival is not only about the music however; arts and fashion bring another side to this eclectic gathering making it great for the whole family too. Open’er has been praised for it’s top organisation skills, even giving you camping plots rather than the standard free-for-all. This may sound trivial but turning up to festival chaos after a long trip isn’t ideal. The festival hosts it’s own stages dedicated to fashion, alongside the art installations. And with tickets set at £112 including camping for the weekend, it’s a real steal for a festival experience. www.opener.pl/en
Hands in the air for Open’er FIB (Festival Internacional de Benicassim) 2017 Where: Benicassim, Spain When: July 13-16. 2017 Established in 1995, Festival Internacional de Benicassim draws thousands of people to the Valencian town every summer for the four days of music. They may not be able to offer you a sandy beach or guaranteed sunshine, but there is something special about home festivals. Crowds at R&L are world renowned on the festival circuit for ebbing some of the most enthusiastic, giving bands memorable shows year after year. Headliners of the previous years include Arctic Monkeys, Biffy Clyro and Kasabian. Although originally a predominantly rock festival, R&L has grown to become a cross genre platform, with other acts from Disclosure and Macklemore to Kendrick Lemar and Boy Better Know all gracing the two festival sites. ecreted in the Julian Alps, Bled is one of the finest Alpine resorts, drawing thousands of tourists every year, of all ages. With so much to see and do, Bled is slowly becoming a popular holiday destination in Europe. Situated a 40-minute train journey away from Ljubljana – Slovenia’s capital and shopper’s paradise, Here’s some of the reasons tourists want to keep visiting the picturesque, tranquil lake in the summer season. Tobogganing Lake Bled offers the chance to go tobogganing down Straža ski slope during the summer months. Let your inner child come out with this adrenaline pumping experience. The 520-metre-long track winds in and out of the trees, revealing a marvelous view of the lake and the countryside. This is a must do activity for people of all ages who want an exhilarating memorable experience of their time at Bled.
Bled Castle Aging back from 1011, the oldest castle in Slovenia offers panoramic views of the Bled island, the Karavanke and the Julian Alps. Perched on a steep cliff rising 130 meters above the lake, this medieval castle offers top quality wine tasting from wines in oak barrels. Enticing you to indulge in some fine dining paired with spectacular views whilst you tuck in to traditional Slovenian dishes. To be taken on a journey through Lake Bled’s history, visit the castle’s museum, Afterwards, why not take a trip to the gothic chapel educated to the bishops St Albuin and St Ingenuin in the east side of the castle. Cycling Cycling around the lake is one of the most convenient and quickest ways to explore the surroundings of Bled. To walk around the entire lake, it takes around an hour and fourty minutes, however to cycle, it only takes around thirty. For mountain cyclists, you can cycle down forests roads on Jelovica, Pokljuka and Mežakla and for a less demanding but still enthusiastic journey, you can take a trip through the valley of Radovna or take a short drive to Pokljuka where you can enjoy pleasurable and peaceful cycling. If youre not interested in ny of those, you can just cycle around the lake on the roads and take in the beatiful views.
Bled Cream Cake Leaving Bled without trying the famous cream cake is a sin. This cake is the symbol of Bled’s cuisine and it can be purchased in the majoirty of places around the lake. However, the best place to try it is Park Restaurant and Café, where the recipe was originally discovered. The puff pastry goodness was founded by Ištvan Lukačević sixty years ago and over 12 million slices have been sold since then. Swimming and bathing Enjoy Bled’s cool waters from the Castle Bathing Area, the only designated outdoor bathing area surrounding lake Bled. It can be found below the exquisite castle rock and welcomes visitors from June till September for an exciting day bursting of fun. With hundreds of metres of space, the bathing area offers countless ways of having fun, including: four outdoor swimming pools, two waterslides, a climbing wall, a trampoline and a jump board. Younger children can enjoy the sandbox or play on the climbers and swings, and for those who don’t want to get wet, you can find a chess set and table tennis within the vicinity, or simply just enjoy the sun on one of the sun chairs provided or chill under the shade provided from beach umbrellas or chestnut trees.

Bled island church Positioned on Bled Island, the only way to get to this Baroque church is either by a Pletna boat, or to row yourself. Officially called The Church of Assumption, the church has been dated back to the 15th century when it was re-built in a more gothic style. After an earthquake hit it, the only things that survived are a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, and the frescoes in the presbytery. The church has had a few rebuilds since then in order to keep it still standing. Nowadays, the church is open for tourists to visit and look around, and for people to get married inside. Traditionally, it is considered good luck for the groom to carry his bride up the steps on their wedding day, before ringing the bell and making a wish inside the church. This is the ultimate must-see for anyone visiting Bled.
Hiking There are several opportunities available for hiking and backpacking around Bled. With the development of tourism in the area being linked to mountaineering, the various mountains surrounding Bled can be seen on a clear day. For those with a bit more hiking expertise, trips to the Triglav summit can be organized through agencies with a guide if wanted. Other mountains like Begunjščica, Stol, Debela Peč and Viševnik offer less demanding, yet more attractive views. Mountains of a medium height like Pokljuka, Jelovica and Mežakla have good testing ground for mountain tours to higher ranges, and are also extremely fascinating. If noneof these tickle your fancy, why not take a walk up to Little Osojnica Hill, where the most breath-taking views of the whole of Bled can be appreciated. Bled can be enjoyed at all times of the year, with a skii slope accessible in the Winter. But the summer months are the most popular.
Adventure park For adventure seekers only, Pustolovski park is Bled’s only adventure park full of unique challenges. Located on Straža and situateed around the blooming nature the park has to offer, 81 thrilling attractions and challenges wait in the woods. Made for people of all ages including couples, families, children, adults and groups to have a risk-taking and fun filled day, whilst still being close enough to the beauty of the lake itself.

Waves crashing against Porto Moniz’s natural pools
Clear waters along Calheta’s coastline
The sun beamed across the clear blue sea where the shadow of the plane appeared as it landed somewhere deep within the North Atlantic Ocean. I stepped off the plane and onto the volcanic island, Madeira, a Portuguese island surrounded by breath taking views of oceanic sights and botanic scenery, it’s no wonder why more and more tourists visit the enticing country each year. We began our first full day in search of food as we became too familiar with the traditional beverage on arrival. We drove for 20 minutes along bendy roads that clings to the edges of the mountains. Within minutes we were gliding across the seafront in Calheta near the supermarket, but instead of shopping, we decided to hit the beach. The volcanic island is home to many beaches layered in a blend of black and grey pebbles leading you into the sea. The popular beach in Calheta, however, is the only beach on the island made with smooth grains of sand. The golden man-made beach is located on the coast surrounded by hotels and snack bars that invited us and other holiday makers to spend the day led sleepily on its shore. We dipped into the balmy sea and squished our toes in the spongy sand whilst fish glided past our feet. The Mediterranean climate lingers all year round making the sea temperature no lower than 20 degrees. As the sun glistened across the ocean, we looked back on the island’s tall volcanic layers framed with rows of green banana plantations. The next day we drove for two hours in the car to visit the beautiful town of Porto Moniz. We drove through winding rural villages, passing the occasional house dotting the roads, to find Porto Moniz’s natural bathing pools. We trailed the carved stone steps into the cooling Atlantic as the ocean’s tide crashed against lava rocks and filled the pool. As we swam in the refreshing crystal

scenery. After a few peaceful hours, we went in hunt for food along the seafront. With plenty of restaurants and shops, we eventually settled for a small, quiet restaurant bar.

Mystical natural pools in Porto Moniz Near the airport lays the bustling capital town of Funchal, known for its picturesque harbour, colourful market and world record firework display. The city was busy with people walking down the streets and cars pulling in and out of car parks. Once we were parked up, we followed the winding streets narrowed with tasty restaurants and popular retail stores. Walking along the mosaic tiled paths we spotted marble water fountains, antique churches, and flourishing gardens. We finally reached the harbour and watched as gigantic cruise ships sailed away, whilst enjoying an ice cream sundae and a refreshing cool beverage on one of the many budding cafés sat along the harbour side. Later we flew across Madeira in one of the captivating cable cars found at the bottom of Funchal. We gazed across the island as we soared into the green mountains, hovering over the balmy blue bay, traditional vibrant

Looking out onto the island’s panoramic landscapes as the cable car creped steadily towards the neighbouring town Monte. We took a walk into Monte and opted for a thrilling ride back down to the capital in a traditional toboggan. under waterfalls and lagoons, ready to get wet and cool ourselves off from the sticky heat. Soon we stopped to catch our breaths back and regain some energy before we went on to discover the secrets of the island. We trekked through luscious green valleys and treaded along the crust of the mountains before we could truly witness some of the most magical views.
By our villa and all around the island hides hundreds of hiking trials, known as Levedas, which are perfect for admiring the thrilling landscapes. In the 16th century, water canals became a popular hiking trail for their breath taking views, mesmerising waterfalls and agricultural setting. We prepared to stroll across the enchanted island with our backpacks full of water and snacks. The trail led us up and down the island along steep rocky paths. We passed

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING EUROPE BY TRAIN
Fancy travelling Europe this summer? Well look no further, Voyage’s top travellers have created their very own guide to travelling Europe by train, to make sure you make the most out of your trip. Travelling Europe in the summer must be on the majority of peoples bucket lists. Imagine, wandering around the coliseum in Rome, going up the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Eating pizza on a Gondola in Venice, or enjoying the tranquil lakes in Slovenia. The majority of first time travellers choose to start with Europe, as It’s more calm than say – Thailand or Australia, and I certainly do not blame them! The people at Voyage have put together their ultimate guide to travelling Europe this summer, Including tips and tricks, and money savers to get you through the tough times! Go with a company Many companies such as Interrail, Rail Europe, EuroLines and more, offer tickets you can purchase for a set price, which allow you to travel between European countries for a certain amount of days. These tickets are definitely a lot cheaper than if you were to book individual train, plane or bus tickets and also a lot easier, as Its all in one ticket! Don’t try and cram In too much Obviously whilst you’re on your travels you’re going to want to see everything – and that’s normal. But don’t try to cram In too much! Try to spend a minimum of 3 days in each location, or you will find that you don’t get to see everything you want and by the end of your trip you’ll feel like you spent the whole time on a train. Check prices of places before you go You should definitely check the average price of things in different cities before you choose to go there. It sounds silly but it’s one of those things that can make a city less appealing. Prague and Budapest can be extremely cheap, however places like Norway, and also Venice are known to cause a much larger hole in your wallet. So always be careful and make sure you know how much money you will need.
Ticket Machines When travelling In certain cities, if you purchase a day ticket on their trains, trams or buses you need to make sure to read the signs. In some cities, Berlin for example, once you purchase a ticket you have to validate it before getting on the train. You basically put it under a machine and it stamps the date and time on it. This is because you can purchase tickets which are valid to go to anywhere for a certain amount of time, so if you exceed that time, you will be charged. Also if you don’t validate the ticket, you will be fined,. Bring comfy clothing and shoes There is nothing worse than having to walk around a city for hours in uncomfortable clothing or shoes. I’m sure everyone cares how they look – understandably. But are those heels really a good idea for a trip around the cobblestoned streets of Bruges? Be extremely careful when choosing what you want to pack, because if you decide you don’t want to wear it, it just becomes a waste of space in your backpack, especially if you dont want to throw it away. Bring a first aid kit I know it sounds a little silly, but you wouldn’t believe how useful little things like paracetamol and plasters can become in an urgent situation. Trying to find a first aid kit in another country where English isn’t known well can be quite difficult to, so to avoid this just pack a mini one in your luggage. Don’t eat anywhere in the centre of cities In any city in Europe, you just know not to eat in the city centre. 9 times out of 10 the food isn’t local, or nice and it will cost an arm and a leg for a mini salad. Instead, try to ask local people who work in shops, or from your accommodation where they recommend, or even just have a wander out of the tourist areas and see what you find, you might be surprised.
Try and see cities by bike In some places, like Amsterdam and Barcelona, cycling everywhere is completely normal. To save some money paying for train tickets or bus tickets to different landmarks, why not hire a bike? Some cities are starting to introduce free bikes, to stop people from catching a train, bus or cab everywhere to help pollution. Also, if its a sunny day, what better way to see the city? Visit off season There is nothing worse than visiting a city and it being boiling hot and so busy you can’t get into a restaurant or museum without having to que. Everywhere in Europe is so much quieter and cheaper off season, and transportation there will be cheaper too. As well as accommodation and sometimes even restuarants will be cheaper. Be aware of afternoon closures Some countries have siesta’s or their shops shut at midday for a few hours. Make sure you check this out beforehand so you can plan something to do between those hours if everything is shut. Stay in the centre It’s going to be a bit more expensive to stay in the city centre of places, but its definitely worth it. It saves so much time and money on other transport. Check student prices If you’re a student, or under 25 you can get cheaper tickets in some museums and castles if you show your ID. If they don’t advertise it, just ask because it can save a lot of money. Avoid taxi’s in city centres Some taxis will charge you a ridiculous amount to go from an airport or train station which is just down the road. Instead, try and get a train or a bus, or see if you can walk it.

Find free things to do around the area In every city there is at least a handful of things you can do for free. Whether its parks you can visit, or even castles and markets, if you’re on a budget or even if you’re not, these things can be very interesting.
Take walking tours Organised and sometimes free walking tours are available in mostly every city in Europe. This guarantee’s that you will see everything, and not get lost. It’s also a good way to meet people if you’re a solo traveller.
Don’t just stay in Hotels There are now so many accommodation options for travellers, that you don’t just have to stay in a hotel or hostel. You can stay in an Air Bnb, a normal bnb or even couch surf. There are always different places to stay that can be cheap.
Try and travel with people If you’re travelling with people, you can share things like shampoo and conditioner and toothpaste and can also share the carrying. Also, if you’re travelling with people the same gender as you, you can even share clothes – win win.
Get an all inclusive city pass Some cities offer a pass which allows you to pay a fixed fee, and visit all of their attractions, museums and landmarks for free. These can be good if you want to visit everywhere that you can on there, but if not then it is sometimes cheaper to book them individually. Work it out before you go to make things cheaper for yourself and to make sure you can get to see everything you want to! Check alcohol prices in cities Some cities and countries, such as Norway, charge an extortionate amount of money for alcohol. Make sure you’re aware of this before going as you don’t want to go up to a bar and order 2 beers and end up with a £50 bill. Try not to get money out of an ATM Every time you get money out of an ATM abroad it will charge you per transaction. Even if it is only a small amount it does add up if you keep doing it. Try to take a bit of cash and then put the rest of your money on a card you can get from a travel agents, as it wont cost you to withdraw. Take a trip to a local supermarket If you’re staying in an Air Bnb or an apartment, or anywhere where you will have access to a kitchen, try to get some food from a local supermarket and eat in some days. This will work out a lot cheaper and gives you the chance to try out local foods. Also exploring supermarkets in other countries is kind of fun. Don’t buy lots of clothes and souvenirs There’s nothing worse than carrying around an extremely heavy backpack on your shoulders for hours knowing its full of souvenirs and things you don’t actually need. It’s nice to buy something to remember from each destination, but don’t go overboard. Maybe just purchase a postcard, or a key ring – something little. Buy a portable phone charger You never know when you might need it, but this can always come in handy. Especially when you’re lost. You can get small ones now that fit into wallet slots and purses and will charge your phone 3 times until it needs re-charging itself. So there will be no wasting of space
27
sometimes there are people offering “cheaper” tickets outside places like the Coliseum, and in reality, they’re actually not cheaper. Check the prices from the actual place before making any decisions and also make sure they’re a legitimate company, and ask for your tickets up front. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Amsterdam, Holland
Make a plan for each day If you are only going to visit cities for a few days, make sure you make detailed itinerates for each day. This is something not everyone would do, but it definitely saves time, as if you plan your route beforehand you wont end up going round in circles. You can also use google maps offline, if you download the route you want when you have Wi-Fi, to avoid getting very lost. Carry a separate wallet or folder with your travel documents in Obviously, one of the most important things in your backpack, will be your travel documents. If you loose these you could be in a bit of a disaster, so to make your life easier, why not put them all in one folder and keep them together? So there’s no risk of loosing or damaging them. Don’t fall into tourist traps In many cities, the local people prey on tourists because they know they want to see things, so will spend money on them. However, you need to be careful in some places, like Rome, as Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

With Dubai becoming one of the most expensive places in the world. It’s no wonder why it was rated as one of the best places to live in the Middle East. Tourists are sparing every penny to view the iconic skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. Along with a hot desert climate and its reputation as the ‘shopping capital of the world’, Dubai has so much to offer tourists. But sometimes, we want to ditch the bulky cameras and sun hats, and just go wild. Dubai’s night life is quickly becoming one of the biggest attractions of the Middle East. So, how exactly do we tourists party in Dubai? Every British resident in Dubai knows the first step is to meet other Brits in the area. Facebook pages are responsible for bringing so many people together in Dubai. Who then become best friends over the city’s famous brunches, which involves more drinking than eating. Try the Saffron restaurant at Atlantis the Palm for a boozy brunch. Saffron is well known by the residents of Dubai as ‘The Best Party Brunch’ due to the stocked up bar and resident DJ. Wine and dine like The Sheik as you enjoy the lively atmosphere in between trips to the bar and the buffet. Find over 220 different dishes from cuisines around the world to satisfy your taste buds. Choose your choice of drink from a selection of Malibu cocktails served in wooden coconuts, shots served in test tubes stuck in pineapple wedges or maybe something simple from the Jack Daniels bar or Mojito station. As Atlantis the Palm is one of the most luxurious hotels in Dubai, it’s no surprise that this is one of the more expensive brunches at AED 535 per person - but it’s more than worth it. Another way to waste the day away partying is to visit one of Dubai’s many pool bars. For the perfect mix of beach, bar and restaurant head to Zero Gravity. Located between the bustling areas of Al Sufouh and Jumeirah Beach, you are sure to indulge in a partying experience like no other. Feel like a millionaire as you swim in a 39m glass-fronted swimming pool or soak up the sun on a luxurious day bed or lounger.
With superstar DJs and some of the biggest names headlining every month such as Martin Solvieg, Fat Boy Slim and Chase and Status, you are sure to make memories you will never forget. End a hot day in the sun with a night out on the town at one of Dubai’s vibrant nightclubs. The city caters to everyone’s taste from glamorous cocktail bars to classic Irish pubs. Party any night of the week with Tuesdays being the popular choice for ‘ladies night’, where women can drink for free. For a unique night out head to the ultimate party destination, Mahiki, hidden in the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Complete with Tiki décor, scrumptious fresh fruit cocktails and beautiful tropical flowers - you are sure to be taken into paradise.
It’s no surprise that partying in Dubai is very different to the UK’s night life, but the expensive lifestyle isn’t the only thing that’s different. As the main religion is Islam supported by Sharia law, to be able to drink in Dubai you need to be of 21 years or older and own a drinking license. Technically it’s illegal to drink in the city, so once you’re out of a bar or club you may be arrested. Always plan your route home with taxis from outside the bar or club straight to your hotel.
