The manifesto, consisting of issues, the framework and narratives, results in a masterplan. The manifesto and masterplan are made in groupwork (Johan Torklep, Giorgio Larcher, Gerald Grootelaard).
PUbLIc bATHS oF SoUTH WoRKS | GraDUation proJect Urban scale groupwork, building individual project. Marked with a 9. YEAR | spring semester 2013/autumn semester 2014 (early graduation) STUDIO | complex projects studio LOCATION | South Works, Chicago (South), illinois, uSA TUTORS | olindo Caso, Hubert van der Meel After closing the south works steel factory in south of Chicago, the neighbourhood started to decay. in the manifesto and the masterplan we are dealing with these issues and developping strategies. The (individual) building is part of the story, specifically dealing with the vacancy of South Works and working on the qualities of the site, adjacent to the lake Michigan. These qualities of spaces resulted in a phenomenology inspired bathing complex, keeping in mind the social issues but ambition the potential at the waterfront. 3 | larger projects

The issues in the neighbourhood, the visions we have, the narratives we imagined are the foundation of the masterplan. The masterplans signatory is the division in two parts - the modification of the existing urban structure and the phenomenological part enhancing the qualities at the waterfront - which is divided by the spine. Existing 3 streets are extended, creating horizontality and accessibility. The spine is the connecting vertical element, a park for rainwater collection and slow traffic. The plan is based on the believe of interdependent places.

Enhancing the qualities of the site, the qualities of the interior are almost - if not even more - as important. Architecture has the capability of specific meanings and is augmented by means of experiences, the embodiment and identification with the space. This study of spaces embodies different (sensorial) experiences. Most important is creating depth by the shift or ‘turn of experience’ - the combination and enfilade of these spaces into the design.
MEDIATHEQUE IN MARSEILLE | PUBLIC BUILDING In partnership with Marco Provinciali, Charlotte Grace year | Autumn semester 2012 studio | Public realm/building studio location | Marseille, France tutors | Tom Avermaete and Jorge Mejia The project contains a research into the old port and its social and physical landscape and the mediateque regarded as a public building in a fast changing cultural environment. The mediatheque could be seen as a transformation of the traditional library and museum. Inspired by the pouillon buildings at the harbour, the concept is about walls; the walls arch and penetrate an excavation of the land. Within the fiels, tilted planes are suspended, creating hung spaces. 11 |
HYPOTHESES WE SEE MARSEILLE AS AN ARCHIPELAGO OF CONVEX AND CONCAVE FORMS. THE SEA THAT SURROUNDS THEM IS DEFINED BY THE EVEN PATTERNS OF THE ANCIENT CITY. THE ISLANDS CREATE AN INDEPENDENT AND SYMBIOTIC. CONFLICTING AND COMPLIMENTARY. RESISTANT AND RECEPTIVE URBAN REALM. POUILLON’S VIEUX PORT BUILDINGS ACT IN MEDIATION BETWEEN THESE TWO OPPOSITES. THE ARCHITECTURAL TOOL USED FOR THIS MEDIATION IS THE WALL’ THE TECHNIQUE IS A ROTATION OF THE FACADE WALL - IT BECOMES PERMEABLE. CREATING A PHYSICALLY AND METAPHORICALLY PARRALLEL PASSAGEWAY TO ITS NEIGHBOURS. FROM THE PORT TOWARD THE CITY. IN RELATION TO THE POROUS IMAGERY FELT BY THE GROUP, THE AREA IS SEEN AS AN ASSORTMENT OF POMICE STONES. THE VOIDS BETWEEN ALLOWING DIRECT FAST PASSAGE, THE STONE THEMSELVES ALLOWING BUFFERED, LAYERD PASSAGE. THIS ASSORTMENT COULD BE SEEN AT 1:1000 OR 1000:1.
The structure is based on vierendeel beams which spans over almost the whole length. The vierendeel beams are the light shafts that provides the building of light. Between the vierendeel angled surfaces are hung for the exhibition spaces and the exterior passage way, acting as stabilizing elements.
DANcEPAVILIoN MEDboRGARPLATSEN | pavilion yEAR | autumn 2013 (exchange semester) STuDio | searching for MA studio loCATioN | Medborgarplatsen, Stockholm, Sweden TuToRS | leif Brodersen, Teres Selberg The project is about developing a new dance stage in Medborgarplatsen for young experimental dance, where the relationship between dance, movement, space, gravity, choreography and architecture is investigated. This project is specifically inspired by the transformation of space by light. Different studies are made to see the transformation during the day by light income through the tubes. These tubes are therefore situated in different angles to reach a different experience of space throughout the day (coffee plance/pavilion) and night (dance performances). At night the tubes with double surface are lit and can be part of the performance. 15 | smaller projects
research centre ombla | renovation/intervention year | autumn 2013 (exchange semester) studio | searching for MA studio location | Dubrovnik, Croatia tutors | Leif Brodersen, Teres Selberg Dubrovnik is mauled by bombing in the 90’s while fighting for independence. Visiting the location of the assignment got me envisioning a research centre adopting the calmness of the surrounding space. To attain to similar perception of space extensive research is done about Croation monasteries which I visited and Louis’ Kahn Salk Institute - not only for programme but even more for the experience of the spaces -. The still remaining (bombed) walls are kept because of historic values, the interior structure and the added research pavilions are part of the new design. These pavilions are for multi-purpose, enhance the ‘thinking path’ and partly enclosing the centre space imitating the monasteries. 17 |
The foundation of the design structure is based on the ‘thinking path’ of Darwin, a state-of-mind while walking or similar physical exercise where ideas and impressions mingle more freely in the mind; unexpected or unusual thoughts might arise. This state-ofmind concept serve the purpose of the reseacher.
