concept The fibrous nature of paper cells provides a structural unit to hold up a page in a book. Each fiber depends on each other just like how people depend on each other to develop relationships. This idea of connections has inspired Brain Food to be a space for others to conect-just like the fibers found in paper.
concept in design To incorporate biophilic design, the casework, lighting, and ceiling work in unison to create a three-dimensional immersive space as if people are inside a book that’s microscopically made up from small fibers. The branches spread out of the trunk of the ceiling into the bookstore as if the tree grew into the bookstore and sprouted books.

programming The customer is introduced by the bakery. The items on the menu are inspired by books-hoping to create a neural connection to the books that are on their right. While a customer is waiting, the customer can browse through the retail section. After grabbing their food, the mezzanine is a space for reading.

bakery The first checkpoint is the book-inspired bakery. A transparent panel allows customers to observe how their food is made. Each item is inspired by a story from the books in the bookstore. Associating the customer to a book-inspired item is a way to spark creativity and interests, leading them into the bookstore out of curiosity.

retail After exposing the customer to books through food, the customer enters the second checkpoint, the retail bookstore. To incorporate biophilic design, the casework, lighting, and ceiling work in unison to create a three-dimensional immersive space as if people are inside a book that’s microscopically made up from small fibers.
lounge The last checkpoint is the lounge area in the mezzanine. The mezzanine can be accessed by the elevator by the bakery or the stairs at the end of the retail store to encourage people to experience the bakery and retail checkpoints. This space provides an area to socialize, eat, and/or read a book.

concept A cascade is a small waterfall that falls in stages down a steep rocky slope. Water is known as a symbol of life, cycle, and freedom. The way the water erodes the rock in the formation of a cascade is a constant cycle of a new life form. The constant cycle is captured in Healing Waters.
concept in design This form runs throughout the floor plan, similar to how the river runs through Charlotte. To immerse into the idea of healing with one’s environment, interactive features are integrated into the space.

materials The color palette contains patterns and colors of sustainable and healthy materials that seize the moments of the natural world around us. The water stone formed in rivers and the carpet inspired by earth processes to mimic the natural environment welcomes all to heal within their environment.

surgery waiting room The surgery entrance has an interactive wall where the digital wall responds movements in addition to displaying public information. To distinguish the two lobbies, each one has different colors, seating options, and lighting. These features create a pleasant visit when the patients are in times of physical or emotional stress especially when clinics are not visited frequently.
technology To immerse into the idea of healing with one’s environment, interactive features are integrated into the space. The “Feel the Water” wall displays an interactive hologram of a waterfall where patients can feel and wave at the projected image.
Interactive Digital Wall
exam waiting room Beginning with the first stage in the cycle is a calm running cascade. In the lobbies, the sinuous current in water is captured on the floor and ceiling as well as providing a visual cue of circulation. The ceiling stores acoustical values for a peaceful experience.
exam room The exam rooms are inspired by a stage in the formation of cascade-soft rock erosion. The eroded space under the hard rock is hidden and private-just like the exam rooms. The surrounding wood slats around the patient recliner makes the patient area private and comfortable.
post ambulatory care unit The PACU is greeted by natural sunlight that promotes the wellbeing of patients before and after their surgery. The center of the ceiling is a moving image of a river to distract patients when getting wheeled to a surgery room as well as adding some life in the space.
individual space This room marks the erosion of the cycle. As surgery is a process of constructing, it’s like the room is built for reconstruction to prepare for the beginning of the cycle again just like how patients are preparing for the next cycle after their treatment.
culture lane Community
client The urban planning class at San Jose State University conducted research to find out ways to bring a community together in San Jose, CA. They found that this local Laundromat was a place where many of the residents gathered. The design challenge was to create an outdoor space to connect the residents. The solution was to design a “wallpaper and furniture to provide an urban living room for the neighborhood.
inspiration Culture Lane redefines how we intereact with different communities. The connection of diverse cultures is represented in the unique tiles inspired by the tiles on a fountain adjacent to the site. We choose tiles are inspired by different cultures for an all-inclusive design for the community. The tilewrapped pieces of furniture welcomes people from the world to interact with different cultures.
development The first sketch models were to explore texture and possible forms that could be furniture. The exploration of color was an importance factor in this project. The cultures derived from clothes from different cultures to emphasis the purpose of a Laundromat.
A living room would not be complete without furniture. The colors are brought out in the furniture to create a vibrant and exciting space. This energetic gradient that bleeds out from the furniture is a representation of the harmony between the cultures in the area.

mahome DESIGN PROCESS
process Mahome is a solution to our basic needs: eat, sleep, bathe. I took a volume and placed it into a pool of plaster to create a negative space which is habitable. The space is surrounded by an exterior glass structured by wooden elements to bring in even more light, a large glass window sits in the relaxing area.
