At Daisy Roots, I sow around 200 packets of seed every season. I find getting seeds to germinate is relatively easy but how best to deal with them afterwards seems to be where many peope fall down.

The National Gardens Scheme was founded in 1927 to raise money for the nurses of the Queen's Nursing Institute by opening gardens of quality and interest to the public. The simple, but radical idea was to ask individuals to open up private gardens for 'a shilling a head'. In the first year 609 gardens raised over £8,000. A network of volunteer County Organisers was set up and by 1931 over 1,000 private gardens were open and Country Life magazine produced a handbook, known as "The Yellow Book" because of its bright cover. In 1980 The National Gardens Scheme Charitable Trust was established as an independent charity. In 1984 Macmillan Cancer Relief joined the list of beneficiary charities. In the years that followed other charities joined including Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices and Crossroads Caring for Carers. . Now over 3700 welcome visitors annually, with monies raised in excess of £2.5 million ! In 2013, 49 gardens will open in Hertfordshire and Daisy Roots will be selling plants at the six listed here, including my own garden, 8 Gosselin Road.

Geranium x oxonianum ‘Walters Gift’
Hardy Geraniums regularly feature in the top five of any survey taken about our favourite flowers. They are hardy, easyily grown plants that reward us with blooms in white, pink, blue and any combination thereof. The flowers are usually the main reason for growing geraniums, but at Daisy Roots we grow a selection that are as useful in the border for their striking foliage, as for their flowers. Once flowering has finished cut back hard and fresh, new leaves will quickly follow. All varieties shown will grow on any reasonable soil and do best out of strong mid-may sun. Hurry will stocks last!

This year I am holding a series of talks & demonstrations in my own garden, to inform and inspire you to get the best from your own plot. In 2012, Gosselin Road was featured on BBC Gardener’s World, in ‘The Garden’ & ‘Gardens Illustrated’ magazines and in the Mail on Sunday. In 2013 you can join me on a journey through the whole year at Gosselin Road month by month. We will look at what’s in flower and all the jobs that need doing in the garden that month. Numbers will be limited to allow everyone to see what’s going on, so booking is essential. We may, however, hold extra sessions if some months are over subscribed, so don’t be afraid make a last minute enquiry. Some months will be held on Saturday Mornings and some on Thursday evenings so check dates overleaf. You can book as many or as few months as you like. Each session costs £10, including tea and homemade cake, and will last around an hour and a half.
