GRADATION | TRANSITION | HOLISTIC Course: Instructor: Semester: Team with:
Design Studio 3, Architecture & Lighting Allied Studio Derek C. Porter, Star Davis, David Leven Fall 2015 Aditi Govil, Ashley Mathews
The given site is located in between residential and health
care neighborhoods which is under shade through most of the year. For the concept of our design we directly looked into our site which offered these various forms of gradation, seen in scale, textures, colors and light within the site. From here we created our architectural concept which was to create sequence of experience through different qualities of light. The idea for the daylight concept was to define the place of light within our project through this notion of gradation where the structural system adopted on the faรงade creates a hierarchy of light. The light entering our building is mostly from the two sides which converges the light into the center making it the darkest area and creating the experience of transition we are aiming to achieve. On the contrary the electric lighting concept diverges within the center where it is the brightest point. The gradation created in electric lighting is through the pattern of fixtures which decreases in density and increases in scale. Hence, this project is all about experiencing the place of light through the concepts of gradation, transition and hierarchy. 2

Our site undergoes overshadowing almost the entire year due to its surrounding buildings. The maximum daylight exposure occurs during morning hours around 8am to 10am and in the after noon hours between 2pm to 6pm. On this site we have an abundant amount of diffiused light exposure from the north. GIVEN SITE

The shading system of the building is in the form of vertical fins which become thicker in scale as they reach the centre of the building to emphasise on the gradation and hierarchy of light.

THE CUBE ALPHABET CITY COMMUNITY LIBRARY Course: Instructor: Semester: Team with:
Design Studio 2 Davidson Norris, Nelson Jenkins, Glenn Shrum Fall 2015 Aditi Govil, Ketryna Kares
The sun didn’t know how great it was till it hit the side of a building. - Louis Kahn
In our site we observed a number of different conditins in the sky like overcast , grainy due to snow , clear with clouds , sunset etc. These various conditions inspired us to make the user look up at the sky when in the library, the same way the streets in Alphabet city always frame the view of the sky making you look up. Our concept revolves around the idea of the New York city where we compare our atrium to the feeling you get looking down a narrow street in New York. Our idea of always looking up at the sky is again taken from the experience of looking at the sky when framed by buidlings in the city. The concept of color is also adopted from our study of the alphabet city where we are creating this sky ladder making our building part of the sky. The materials used is to have a cooler feel on the outside and a warmer feel when in the centre of the buillding.
We invite the viewers from the busy city life to enter

the library where they will experience the light of New York. This allowed us to bring in the public experience of the city into the private environment through form, light and materials. With the opportunity to create one big architectural move, the light well, we explored “sky ladders”, engaging the user to look into the light well, through the bridges and at the sky much like what is seen in the city. 17
