Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come. Psalm 71: 17 & 18, The Bible

MISSIONANDVISION

MISSION Education for life founded on a biblical worldview

VISION Our students will know God and impact their world for His glory

EDUCATION FOR LIFE Dalat International School seeks to teach our children in areas that go beyond books and academics. Education for life is the pursuit of training the next generation to be people of good character and integrity and to care for others, which will prepare them to make a positive impact on the world in any area they choose to work and live in.

C ONTINUINGTHELEGACY FINISHING THE TASK Look how far we have come! In 2015 Dalat signed an agreement to secure our campus location until 2043. Immediately, work began on the CASTLE, and through the generosity of many it was completed in 2016. Already this wonderful building has transformed our campus not only visually but also in the quality of teaching rooms and facilities, such as the hugely expanded library, the new science and art classrooms, computer rooms, and student support center that are now available to our children. In 2017 you will see the second stage of the development coming to fruition with the dorm on lower campus. Not only will this provide a much improved home for our boarding children, but once complete it will also allow us to proceed to the final stage of our campus development plan. This final stage of development, to begin later in 2017, will see the building of the new high school, administration offices, and multi-purpose room where the old dorms now sit. This is by far the largest part of the development that will build a modern high school to elevate Dalat’s highest level of education while maintaining its welcoming, family atmosphere. Education must do more than just keep up with the world; it must shape the future! That is what Dalat International School in Penang, Malaysia, seeks to do, to shape and educate students – future leaders – who will in turn make a positive impact on Malaysia and the world. Dalat graduates are beacons of light in communities all over the world: highly motivated, welleducated, and intentionally instructed to develop good moral character through spiritual grounding and a biblical worldview. Dalat students are life-long learners, effective speakers and listeners, compassionate givers, good stewards of their resources, seekers of truth and God, and full of wisdom and creativity. These qualities embody Dalat’s core goals, and this upgrade of our campus will allow our students to fully meet their potential to impact the world. Once completed, this campus development to replace the inadequate, aging facilities with new purpose-built, forwardthinking learning spaces will have cost over RM 28 million. The majority of this money has come from the good stewardship of current and past school leadership who, over the last twenty years, have planned well by being prudent with school funds. When we started in 2015, the gap needed to finish the campus development plan was RM 3.5 million. Dalat is a non-profit organization made up of a community passionate about education and developing young people. By 2016 over RM 2 million had been generously given to complete the first two buildings. In 2017 we need your help to complete this vision. Please join with us! Our goal is to raise the last RM 1.5 million to complete the high school, administration offices, and multipurpose room by the end of 2017. Will you make an investment in our children and in Penang and give a gift to finish this important task? Sincerely, Campaign Steering Committee

K ARLSTEINKAMP HEADOFSCHOOL What do you love about Dalat? For me, I love the atmosphere at the PTO food fair, the smile on a student’s face when he receives a course award, the sound of instruments in harmony at the band and choir concert, the team work of a sports team pulling together to win a game, and watching the smile on a senior’s face as the junior reads her tribute at the Junior Senior Banquet. These traditions and values are what we have all worked hard to build; some have been around since Dalat began in 1929 and some have been growing in the last ten years. These foundations are what we plan to build upon in the next ten years as we renew Dalat’s campus facilities to provide a great learning environment for our children. Dalat’s community will thrive with new facilities and new gathering places while we continue to hold fast to what makes Dalat so special; our family atmosphere. After being a student at Dalat in the 1970’s and 1980’s, I was thrilled to come back as a teacher in the 1990’s, return as high school principal in early 2001, and then become head of school for the last ten years. Many things have changed since I attended school here in Penang in first grade, but one thing has remained the same; the commitment to educating and loving children, preparing them for their future. Some things change but Dalat’s key values won’t change. We have had a lot of successes so far. However, there will be disruptions and inconveniences ahead, but it’ll be great to watch our school take shape, and at the end, be able to celebrate our great accomplishment together. I encourage you to get involved, ask questions, be an advocate, give to the capital campaign, and teach your children about safety. We can all do our part to make Dalat a great success. Join me on the journey. Our work is almost done! Mr. Karl Steinkamp, Head of School, Dalat Alumni Class of 1986

LAT SCHOOL FOUNDED IN 1929 - DA DA’LAT, VIETNAM

PROJECTOBJECTIVES As determined by the Dalat Board of Governors: 1. The finished product must meet the needs, not the wants, of up to 760 students. 2. The finished product must be realized without undertaking any activity which threatens the financial solvency or reputation of DIS. 3. Within the constraints of the project budget, the finished product must: a. Maintain the community and family atmosphere. b. Be of reasonably high quality. c. Be as ecologically friendly and energy efficient as possible. d. Be as cost effective to maintain as possible. e. Be as aesthetic as possible. f. Be fully accessible. g. Be realized with as little disruption to the on-going function of the school as possible.

PROJECTRATIONALE The realization of the Campus Development Plan will allow DIS to continue fulfilling its mission in the following ways: 1. Protect the long-term interests of DIS through: a. Replacing existing obsolete facilities which are inefficient, expensive to maintain, and pose safety concerns with contemporary facilities thereby bringing it in line with today’s educational standards and making it competitive with what comparable schools have to offer. b. Developing the capability to internally provide for all core functions needed to allow DIS to operate at its optimal state. (e.g. soccer field, parking, and auditorium.) 2. Allow DIS to enlarge its enrollment beyond its present capacity in order to facilitate the growing number of children from both mission and business families.

8

3. Allow DIS to operate in an environment specifically designed for its needs as opposed to non-educational facilities that have been reconditioned to our needs. 4. The scheduled order of building will accommodate the need to continue having school and activities during construction.

PROJECTBUDGET The total budget for the Dalat Campus Development Plan is just over RM 28 million to be completed in 2018. The good news is that Dalat has or will be able to self-finance over 85% of the projected cost from our reserves and future income. All details and scenarios have been calculated into these costs including professional fees, furnishings, anticipating inflation and GST. The Dalat Board of Governors and the school administration have jointly decided that the school will not spend more than it has, meaning that we will not borrow large sums of money that will put the school in debt and threaten the organization’s financial resilience. As good stewards we believe this is a principle we must highly value. As much as it would be desirable to have the needed funds ready right from the start, this is not possible. The business plan includes raising RM 3.5 million from 2015 to 2018. Our first campaign, which ended in December 2016, raised over half that amount. We still have RM 1.5 million to raise during the Continuing the Legacy – Finishing the Task Campaign before the end of 2017. It is important to note that Dalat International School is an educational trust and operates as a not-for-profit organization. No one benefits from the profits of the school other than Dalat students. Each year Dalat targets a balanced operating budget and generally makes a small profit by the end of each year through cost controls and accountability. Any profits are added to the school’s retained earnings which are used to benefit Dalat students, including this campus development project.

PROPERTYSECURETHROUGH2043 Dalat School has rented its current property from the Convent of the Infant Jesus, a group of Catholic Church sisters based in KL, for the last 46 years and has had a long friendly relationship with the Sisters and their work in Malaysia. They also support the work at Dalat International School and are pleased with Dalat’s mission. In 2015, Dalat signed a multiple tenancy agreement securing the school’s property through 2043. This security gives the school the opportunity to invest in the campus which will be used for Dalat students for many years to come. Although the land is not guaranteed past 2043 the school has every indication from the Sisters that Dalat will continue to fulfill its mission long into the future.

HIGH SCHOOL, ADMINISTRATION, AND MULTIPURPOSE ROOM THE

HARBOR

Budgeted cost RM 15,088,260

Scheduled to begin in 2017 Scheduled to be completed in 2018

The high school, administration, and multipurpose room building will have two distinct sections: an administrative office and multipurpose room (≈ 2,461 m2 or 26,488 ft2) and a high school wing with three floors of high school classrooms (≈ 2,215 m2 or 23,839 ft2). The administrative office on the ground floor has a combined lobby for both the finance and main office. It will include a staff workroom, staff lounge, conference room, adult restroom facilities, a clinic with beds, and office space for the administrative team. Above this will be a flat floored multi-purpose room with room to seat 500 people on nearly 5000 square feet. The 1500 square foot stage will roughly double the size of our current chapel and be suitable for band and choir performances. The facility will be conveniently located at the front of campus, next to the high school band room, and offer handicapped access to our patrons with adequate restroom facilities. The three story high school building sits adjacent and behind the administrative office and multipurpose room and is contiguous. It will include ten classrooms, teacher offices, a uniform storage room and a band room providing three additional classrooms more than the current facilities. The building faces the main field with a grand stair case entrance, includes a large lobby for the multipurpose room, has bathrooms on the ground and 1st floors and is completely handicap accessible. A highlight of the building is the community yard space that will bring the high school community around a central feature. The walkways include breakout spaces for small groups to meet with balconies overlooking the campus. This design allows for the existing roadway to be maintained, giving access to the ocean end of campus and protecting the trees along the roadway and the open views of the ocean.

T SIGNS RENTAL AG 2015-DALA REEMENT TO 2043

VANCE W ORTON BOARD CHAIRMAN

What an exciting time to be a part of Dalat! After many years of prayer, planning, and hard work, we are now within striking distance of seeing what once was only a dream become a reality. The procurement of a 30 year lease for our school, the completion of the 3 story library/multipurpose building in 2016 and the scheduled completion of our residence life facilities for the summer of 2017 are bringing us ever closer to the full realization of our multiyear development plan. One of the primary reasons we have made it this far is due to the support and generosity of those in and around our Dalat community. To those of you who have already contributed toward this outcome, we on the Dalat Board of Governors say thank you for your generous support! As far as we’ve come however, we still have a little further to go. Construction on our final building, the centerpiece of our development plan, is scheduled to begin in June 2017. This building will contain administration offices, an events room for hosting gatherings and productions such as theatrical plays and musical concerts, and most importantly, a state of the art high school designed to meet the needs of not only today’s students, but the needs of future generations of students as well. To complete this building by the summer of 2018 however, we need your support. We on the Dalat Board of Governors invite you to be a part of creating something that will not only impact the lives of Dalat students, but will in turn allow them impact their world. Blessings, Mr. Vance Worten, Chief Governing Officer, Dalat School Board

27

D ATOLIMMOOKSAN CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN

Nelson Mandela once said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’. An inspiring quote indeed, and I believe that many of us, if not all of us, truly subscribe to that. At Dalat, we believe that is so and more. So much that the mission of our school is to provide ‘education for life’. For more than 85 years now, Dalat has strived to educate, nurture and inspire our students to be the leaders of tomorrow so that they maybe transformed into - life long learners - effective speakers and listeners - compassionate givers - good stewards of their resources - seekers of truth and God Thousands of Dalat graduates are impacting and changing the world into a better place presently. As Dalat continues to aspire to provide the necessary education to the future generation and inspire a whole new generation, the time has come for Dalat to cement its place in history as a leading beacon for education. Many of you may not know but the fact remains that most of Dalat’s infrastructure and classrooms were built in the 1930s and 1950s. Although piecemeal efforts were made to upgrade facilities, there remains a void that needs to be filled. I appeal to you to contribute generously so that the children will continue to receive the education that will enable them to impact the world that they live in. We at Dalat will remain steadfast in this quest. That is why we have chosen ‘Continuing the Legacy’ as the inspiration and battle cry for the capital campaign. I hope that you will join me in this noble cause of continuing to provide the children with an education for life. I truly believe that even with limited facilities, Dalat was able to provide an excellent education, what more when modern facilities are at hand? We Thank You for your kind contributions. God bless you and your family. Dato Lim Mook San, Campaign Chairman

28

L ARRYCHINN DIRECTOROFDEVELOPMENT Dalat is impacting the world. I see it all around me: from Dalat students in the fishing villages in Penang, to the missionary families serving in India, to less malaria cases in Africa, to nurses bringing comfort to patients in the United States, and school children being given hope through education in Indonesia. God brings light and life to the people of the world through the Dalat family. We must continue to grow our students and preserve what makes Dalat so special so that more students are prepared for life and will continue that legacy. I am honored to lead the campaign and fight to make that happen. Mr. Larry Chinn, Director of Development
