DALAT INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Continuing the Legacy
Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come. Psalm 71: 17 & 18, The Bible

EDUCATION FOR LIFE Dalat International School seeks to teach our children in areas that go beyond books and academics. C ONTINUINGTHELEGACY FROM 1929 INTO THE FUTURE Dear Dalat Supporter, Education can’t just keep up with the world. Education must shape the future! That is what Dalat International School in Penang, Malaysia seeks to do; shape and educate students – future leaders – who will in turn make a positive impact on the world. Dalat School was started in 1929 in a highland village of Dalat, Vietnam by the Christian and Missionary Alliance to provide education for their missionary children in Indo-China. Eighty-six years later thousands of children have passed through the doors of Dalat School classrooms in Vietnam; Bangkok, Thailand; Cameron Highlands, Malaysia; and now for the last fortyfour years, Penang, Malaysia. Dalat School graduates are teachers, doctors, public servants, and businessmen; they are changing lives and saving lives. One such Dalat graduate is Rear Adm. R. Tim Ziemer from the Class of 1964. Tim was appointed by U.S. President George W. Bush in 2006 to the lead the President’s Malaria Initiative in Africa and Asia. Since then worldwide malaria deaths have dropped 40 percent, to about 600,000 cases a year from one million. Tim Ziemer, Dalat graduate, is saving lives. Dalat students are life-long learners, effective speakers and listeners, compassionate givers, good stewards of their resources, seekers of truth and God, full of wisdom and creativity. These are Dalat’s goals for our children. It is important that Dalat International School remains relevant and up-to-date so that we can continue to educate students to make a positive impact in the world! However, Dalat International School provides a great education with buildings that were built in the 1930s and 50s. The school facilities desperately need to be replaced, not only to provide modern facilities, but more for the fact that the current buildings are no longer adequate. Wouldn’t you agree that it is time for new facilities? Considering Dalat’s track record of excellence and impact with old buildings, imagine what can be accomplished with modern, purpose-built facilities. Dalat’s vision is to build four new buildings that will transform the campus into a leading, modern educational community while maintaining Dalat’s welcoming, family atmosphere. You can help provide a dynamic learning environment and the tools to educate students for the next 30 years and beyond! Dalat is a non-profitable organization made up of a community who is passionate about education and we want you to join us! Our goal is to raise RM 1.5 million for the first three buildings; the guidance, media, and science center, a dormitory, and a cafeteria and fine arts center. Will you give a gift and invest in education? Sincerely, Dalat Capital Campaign Committee

K ARLSTEINKAMP HEADOFSCHOOL What do you love about Dalat? For me, I love the atmosphere at the PTO food fair, the smile on a student’s face when he receives a course award, the sound of instruments in harmony at the band and choir concert, the team work of a sports team pulling together to win a game, and watching the smile on a senior’s face as the junior reads her tribute at the Junior Senior Banquet. These traditions and values are what we have all worked hard to build; some have been around since Dalat began in 1929 and some have been growing in the last ten years. These foundations are what we plan to build upon in the next ten years as we renew Dalat’s campus facilities to provide a great learning environment for our children. Dalat’s community will thrive with new facilities and new gathering places while we continue to hold fast to what makes Dalat so special; our family atmosphere. After being a student at Dalat in the 1970’s and 1980’s, I was thrilled to come back as a teacher in the 1990’s, return as high school principal in early 2001, and then become head of school for the last ten years. Many things have changed since I attended school here in Penang in first grade, but one thing has remained the same; the commitment to educating and loving children, preparing them for their future. Some things change but Dalat’s key values won’t change. We have a lot of work ahead of us. There will be disruptions and inconveniences, but it’ll be great to watch our school take shape, and at the end, be able to celebrate our great accomplishment together. I encourage you to get involved, ask questions, be an advocate, give to the capital campaign, and teach your children about safety. We can all do our part to make Dalat a great success. Join me on the journey. We have a lot to look forward to! Mr. Karl Steinkamp, Head of School, Dalat Alumni Class of 1986

PROJECTOBJECTIVES As determined by the Dalat Board of Governors: 1. The finished product must meet the needs, not the wants, of up to 700 students. 2. The finished product must be realized without undertaking any activity which threatens the financial solvency or reputation of DIS. 3. Within the constraints of the project budget, the finished product must: a. Maintain the community and family atmosphere. b. Be of reasonably high quality. c. Be as ecologically friendly and energy efficient as possible. d. Be as cost effective to maintain as possible. e. Be as aesthetic as possible. f. Be fully accessible. g. Be realized with as little disruption to the on-going function of the school as possible.
PROJECTRATIONALE The realization of the Campus Development Plan will allow DIS to continue fulfilling its mission in the following ways: 1. Protect the long-term interests of DIS through: b. Replacing existing obsolete facilities which are inefficient, expensive to maintain, and pose safety concerns with contemporary facilities thereby bringing it in line with today’s educational standards and making it competitive with what comparable schools have to offer. c. Developing the capability to internally provide for all core functions needed to allow DIS to operate at its optimal state. (e.g. soccer field, parking, and auditorium.) 2. Allow DIS to enlarge its enrollment beyond its present capacity in order to facilitate the growing number of children from both mission and business families.
8
3. Allow DIS to operate in an environment specifically designed for its needs as opposed to non-educational facilities that have been reconditioned to our needs. 4. The scheduled order of building will accommodate the need to continue having school and activities during construction.
PROJECTBUDGET The total budget for the Dalat Campus Development Plan will be just under RM 40 million over the nine years. The good news is that Dalat has or will be able to self-finance over 80% of the projected cost from our reserves and future income – over the next nine years! All details and scenarios have been calculated into these costs including professional fees, furnishings, and anticipating inflation and GST over the next few years of the project. The Dalat Board of Governors and the school administration have jointly decided that the school will not spend more than it has, meaning that we will not borrow large sums of money that will put the school in debt and threaten the organization’s financial resilience. As good stewards we believe this is a principle we must highly value. As much as it would be desirable to have the needed funds ready right from the start, this is not possible. The business plan includes raising RM 4 million over the next ten years. The first goal is to raise RM1.5 million by 2017 during the Continue the Legacy capital campaign. It is important to note that Dalat International School is an educational trust and operates as a not-for-profit organization. No one benefits from the profits of the school other than Dalat students. Each year Dalat targets a balanced operating budget and generally makes a small profit by the end of each year through cost controls and accountability. Any profits are added to the school’s retained earnings which are used to benefit Dalat students, including this campus development project.
PROPERTYSECURETHROUGH2043 Dalat School has rented its current property from the Convent of the Infant Jesus, a group of Catholic Church sisters based in KL, for the last 45 years and has had a long friendly relationship with the Sisters and their work in Malaysia. They also support the work at Dalat International School and are pleased with Dalat’s mission. This year, in 2015, Dalat has signed a multiple tenancy agreement securing the school’s property through 2043. This security gives the school the opportunity to invest in the campus which will be used for Dalat students for many years to come. Although the land is not guaranteed past 2043 the school has every indication from the Sisters that Dalat will continue to fulfill its mission long into the future.

OOICHOONPIAO
BOARD CHAIRMAN
On behalf of the Dalat Board of Governors, I am inviting you to be part of an exciting phase of the school’s development. God has been faithful to Dalat, guiding the school from its founding in Vietnam 86 years ago, leading the school on a journey through Bangkok, Cameron Highlands and eventually here in Penang. Through this school, many thousands of students and families were blessed and the work that we plan to embark on is important to continue to fulfill this mission. The Campus Development has been on the School Board’s agenda for over 15 years. During that time, we had explored many options including relocation to a new location. We believed that the time is now and the location is here for us to build. The campus development plan is fully supported by the School Board and the School Administration. The School Board is committed to maintaining what makes Dalat so precious: our community and family atmosphere. We believe that Dalat is a beacon of great education and a biblical worldview in Penang and Malaysia. We believe that the students that journey through our campus will receive an education for life and that they will impact the world positively. For this to happen, we need your support. The Board is inviting you to be part of this exciting plan of leaving a legacy for the next generation to come. Mr. Ooi Choon Piao, Chief Governing Officer, Dalat School Board

TERNATIONAL SCHOO 2006-IN LS OPEN TO MALAYSIANS
D ATOLIMMOOKSAN CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN
Nelson Mandela once said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’. An inspiring quote indeed, and I believe that many of us, if not all of us, truly subscribe to that. At Dalat, we believe that is so and more. So much that the mission of our school is to provide ‘education for life’. For more than 85 years now, Dalat has strived to educate, nurture and inspire our students to be the leaders of tomorrow so that they maybe transformed into - life long learners - effective speakers and listeners - compassionate givers - good stewards of their resources - seekers of truth and God Thousands of Dalat graduates are impacting and changing the world into a better place presently. As Dalat continues to aspire to provide the necessary education to the future generation and inspire a whole new generation, the time has come for Dalat to cement its place in history as a leading beacon for education. Many of you may not know but the fact remains that most of Dalat’s infrastructure and classrooms were built in the 1930s and 1950s. Although piecemeal efforts were made to upgrade facilities, there remains a void that needs to be filled. I appeal to you to contribute generously so that the children will continue to receive the education that will enable them to impact the world that they live in. We at Dalat will remain steadfast in this quest. That is why we have chosen ‘Continuing the Legacy’ as the inspiration and battle cry for the capital campaign. I hope that you will join me in this noble cause of continuing to provide the children with an education for life. I truly believe that even with limited facilities, Dalat was able to provide an excellent education, what more when modern facilities are at hand? We Thank You for your kind contributions. God bless you and your family. Dato Lim Mook San, Campaign Chairman

L ARRYCHINN DIRECTOROFDEVELOPMENT Dalat is impacting the world. I see it all around me: from Dalat students in the fishing villages in Penang, to the missionary families serving in India, to less malaria cases in Africa, to nurses bringing comfort to patients in the United States, and school children being given hope through education in Indonesia. God brings light and life to the people of the world through the Dalat family. We must continue to grow our students and preserve what makes Dalat so special so that more students are prepared for life and will continue that legacy. I am honored to lead the campaign and fight to make that happen. Mr. Larry Chinn, Director of Development

Dalat International School educates children in preschool to grade 12. Located in Penang, Malaysia, Dalat is a leader in international education and provides an “education for life for more than 570 students.
