The History of Dale Hollow Make your own.

By Claudia Johnson, claudiajohnsonwriter@gmail.com hey say there’s history in these waters, and that is true. Beneath the calm, clean waters of Dale Hollow Lake are the remains of farms and towns tamed from a wilderness by settlers to these hills and valleys first penetrated by long hunters and, before that, roamed for 20,000 years by natives to this land. Since the flooding and building of the dam in 1943, the Lake has become part of history and welcomed those who were writing their own. Explorers and adventurers still seek the place. Some ride horses on trails laced into the challenging terrain of the

Highland Rim. Others hunt the primordial forests or fish the clear depths of the lake. Birdwatchers, hikers, spelunkers and archeologists may find bald eagles, waterfalls, caves and shale-rock fossils on the Lake’s banks. Springs, creeks and streams meander their way to the Lake, naturally, constantly cleansing it. Venture just beyond the Lake to visit the home of American war hero Sgt. Alvin C. York or statesman Cordell Hull. Take a winery tour. Visit the National Fish Hatchery. Walk across Dale Hollow Dam. Go golfing or antiquing. Enjoy one of several playhouses or live music venues. Find a

festival. Several of Tennessee’s award-winning state parks dot the surrounding landscape offering activities, food, lodging, camping and more. Serving as gateways to the Lake’s bounty of recreational activities like house boating, water sports and scuba diving are 15 marinas. Here’s where you’ll find water-side cabins, houseboat rentals, lake view restaurants, shopping, moorage, watercraft rentals and lake supplies and accessories. With the lake as a backdrop, the marinas often stage concerts, holiday celebrations and special events. There’s not just history in the waters of Dale Hollow

Lake – there’s promise, too. The promise of memories. The promise of fun. Catching the fish that beats a world record smallmouth bass once pulled from the Dale Hollow. Houseboating with friends. Feeding a goat named Butternut who’s claimed his own Lake kingdom. Teaching the kids to ski. Diving to explore the ruins of a community. Watching a bald eagle take flight. Floating through the reflection of the setting sun on the Lake. There’s a future in these waters, and that future is yours to claim. Explore Dale Hollow Lake.

The Obey River campground is one of the most popular in Tennessee with many sites directly on the river. The Obey was impounded in 1939 to form Dale Hollow Lake. The water in the river rises and runs fast when the dam is generating, and drains to shallow pools when generation ends.

elina - From the Southeast to the Midwest, Dale Hollow Lake has long been renowned as a vacation spot. Guess what? It’s vacation time again. When you throw in for good measure the lake’s reputation as a top fishing spot, especially smallmouth bass, it’s a must-visit destination, and only a very short drive from Crossville. Why make the drive to Dale Hollow? There’s a laundry list of reasons: houseboating, scuba diving and snorkeling, various water sports, primitive camping and developed campgrounds, the clarity of its water, and its rustic beauty, along with fishing (more next issue). These are just some of the things that make up the rich, multi-faceted history of Dale Hollow Lake. It’s a history that includes state, continent and world fishing records, and visitors in the dozens of millions. Dale Hollow means different things to different people, but its reputation cuts a wide swath.

So much to do, so little time Dale Hollow is well-known for its houseboating. How good is the houseboating on the lake? Pickaslip.com rated Dale Hollow as the top houseboating destination not only in the U.S., but on the continent, ahead of such vacationing heavyweights as Lake Powell in Utah and Lake Mead near Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Dale Hollow can also mean scuba diving and snorkeling to others. The clarity of the lake is outstanding, and that clarity has attracted divers from hundreds of miles away for decades. Water sports in general come to mind when Dale Hollow is mentioned. A lot of folks want to ski, jet ski or “tube” on Dale Hollow, and there’s no secret why. With over 600 miles of shoreline and nearly 28,000 surface acres of water, there’s plenty of room for everyone to have fun. Others prefer to tool up or down the lake at a more

leisurely pace on a pontoon (my personal favorite) or smaller boat. The lake is also known for its primitive camping and for the more sophisticated traveler, its developed campgrounds. You can do whatever type of camping you want to do on the lake or at another great spot.

Camping below the dam While on the subject of camping, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the amazing campground located directly below the dam. The Corps of Engineer-operated campground has everything a camper would want in terms of facilities, and facilities are only half of it. The other half is its location and the accompanying scenery. The campground is situated directly downstream from Dale Hollow Dam, only a few hundreds of yards away. The Obey River (which was impounded to form Dale Hollow Lake) runs parallel to

9

again! the entire southern side of the campground, with a several hundred-foot high mountain directly behind the river. Lake access is less than three miles away by road. You have direct access to the Obey on-site (complete with launching ramp). Celina, with a handful of mom-and-pop restaurants, groceries, shopping and antiquing, is only about three miles away. In terms of location, what more could you want? Virtually the entire campground is shaded (not an exaggeration), and wildlife abounds. If you can walk or ride around the campground and not see a dozen squirrels, who have almost become pets through the years, it’s a rare thing. I have personally seen deer on the adjacent walking/ biking trail multiple times, too. Those are not pets. In terms of facilities, there are three bathroom/shower units on the grounds, a laundry facility, and a really nice fish-cleaning table and sink, among other things. There’s

the usual electrical, water and sewer utilities you would expect, and each camping space has fire pit/grilling areas. The walking/biking trail is roughly a mile around, and situated on the western end of the camping area. It, too, is almost completely shaded, and runs through an area that sets this campground apart from others: a direct fishing stream outlet from the Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery.

People just keep coming back There are 40,000 annual visitors to the fish hatchery, and many of them come to fish. “People come here to camp and fish, and find out there’s a lot more to do than that,” said Andrew Currie, fish hatchery manager. Visiting the hatchery and campground has become a tradition that’s handed down from generation to generation, Currie said. “Kids that were brought here by their

grandparents are now bringing their own kids,” he said. “People come to the campground to fish,” said Paul Boyce, president of the Friends of Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery Support group. The outlet stream from the hatchery to the Obey River “is one of the heaviest fished streams in the state,” Currie said. “We stock the Obey every Friday,” Currie said. “This little stream between the hatchery and the river sells more fishing licenses and trout stamps than any other one like it in Tennessee.”

valleys of the lower part of the Cumberland Plateau, an area known for its rugged, breathtaking landscape. Through a conscious effort, Dale Hollow Lake has retained virtually all of that landscape. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the dam, power plant and reservoir, has never allowed direct private landowner access to the lake, always keeping a considerable buffer between private property and the lake’s shoreline. The result has been a lake, compared to most you will visit, that has been largely undisturbed by outside influences. Seeing is believing.

You can come just to sight-see Certainly among the most appealing features of Dale Hollow Lake is its rustic beauty, which is also a factor for many visitors who come largely for other reasons. Through the impoundment of the Obey River, Dale Hollow was carved from the hills and

The outlet stream from the National Fish Hatchery and other tributaries are among the favorite places to fish, especially when the dam is generating and sending water down the main river in fast currents. The Obey River is stocked weekly with Rainbow Trout.

Live Eagle Camera he Dale Hollow Lake Marina Operator’s Association in cooperation with the Friends of Dale Hollow Lake are seeking support to install a Live High Definition Camera on one of Dale Hollow Lake’s American Bald Eagle’s Nest. The Marina Association will match the first $5,000.00 raised to push this effort half

way toward the ultimate goal of $20,000.00. The funding will be used to install electric service and fiber optic service to the camera which will be mounted high above Dale Hollow Lake overlooking one of the lake’s active American Bald Eagle’s Nests. The camera will be installed by one of this project’s stron-

gest supporters, Twin Lakes Telephone Cooperative, and will provide 24/7 Live Video feeds from a nest that has produced over 12 baby eagles in the past six years. A Dale Hollow Lake American Bald Eagle Web-Site will be produced where interested viewers can watch the various stages of the eagle’s life such as nest building, egg laying,

egg hatching, and eagle fledging. This project is a cooperative, non-profit educational opportunity for the Upper Cumberland and Dale Hollow Lake Region. The camera will be installed and tested in late summer of 2016.

Dale Hollow Lake - A Popular Vacation ristine, crystal-clear, unspoiled, rustic, breathtaking. These are just a few of the words that have been used through the years to describe Dale Hollow Lake, a popular vacation destination for well over a half-century. There’s a reason these words have been used to describe the lake, nestled across the Tennessee-Kentucky state line: they’re true. The thing almost all first-time visitors to Dale Hollow will notice is its rustic, underdeveloped state. Compared to many lakes across the Southeast and Midwest, Dale Hollow lake is something of a step back in time. It’s not a step back in terms of the services and accommodations offered by the 15 marinas that serve the lake, but a step back to a time before development and construction spoiled some of the countryside, especially around so many lakes. A cruise down Dale Hollow Lake won’t be one where the shoreline and adjacent property is dotted with private boat docks and houses. A cruise on Dale Hollow will give you an incredible vantage point of Mother Nature in all her glory. The rustic nature of the lake didn’t happen by accident. Dale Hollow has been kept purposefully underdeveloped by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, giving the lake a unique personality that’s served it well. The lake has always been known for its clarity, purity and incredible views. Those characteristics, plus its reputa-

tion as the smallmouth bass capital of the world, have drawn visitors from across the Midwest and Southeast for many decades.

People just keep coming back The lake was impounded in the mid-1940’s for the purposes of flood control and hydroelectric power generation. Just a few years after its impoundment, privately-owned boat docks, marinas, and cottages to house visitors began to spring up. Dale Hollow gained its worldwide reputation as a top fishing destination early on, after David Lee Hayes took the world-record smallmouth bass from its waters. In the years and decades after that, the fishing reputation and crystal-clear water lured hundreds of thousands of visitors to the lake. Those hundreds of thousands of visitors are now deep into the millions, with countless repeat visitors. There’s a reason for that. “When people come to Dale Hollow, they’re just blown away by the lake itself, and all there is to do,” said Richard DeVries of the Dale Hollow Lake Marina Association. “To say we have a lot of repeat visitors would be an understatement. We have some families who have been coming here for decades and are now in their third or fourth generation of visiting Dale Hollow. People like what they see and all the things there are to do, and they just keep coming back. We’re

grateful for that.”

Lake draws visitors from far and near Dale Hollow sits across the Kentucky-Tennessee state line, with most of the lake in Tennessee. Its 640 (app.) miles of shoreline is within just a few miles of several towns. The lake is very near Celina and Byrdstown in Tennessee, with Livingston not far away. Across the state line in Kentucky, Burkesville and Albany are near the lake. The lake’s location has served as a drawing card through the years. Nashville, Knoxville, Louisville, Lexington, and Chattanooga are all within a rough two-hour’s drive of the northern or southern part of the lake. Dale Hollow’s drawing power has extended well beyond that circle, however. A check of license plates in area marinas through the years would show visitors from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and even Minnesota in the Midwest, and a variety of states in the Southeast. Location may be a factor in getting first-time visitors, but the lake itself and the abundance of available activities is what keep people coming back.

Fishing, houseboating water sports: much to do David Hayes’ world-record smallmouth gave the lake instant celebrity in the fishing

world 60 years ago, and for many people, smallmouth fishing is what Dale Hollow is all about. The lake holds the top three spots all-time for that species on a list compiled by Bassmaster. Dale Hollow holds five of the top seven spots on that list, six of the top 10, and 10 of the top 25. Is the lake the smallmouth capital of the world? The numbers speak for themselves. The lake and the Obey River, which was impounded to form the lake, holds or has held multiple state or national records for various species. You will also find largemouth and Kentucky bass, walleye, crappie, drum and other species in the lake. A rainbow trout hatchery that stocks waters around the entire Southeast is located just below Dale Hollow Dam on the Obey. For the serious fisherman, there are numerous top-of-the-line fishing guides available. Fishing is only one thing you can do on Dale Hollow, though. As much as the lake has become equated with fishing, houseboating likely runs a close second. The combination of the natural beauty of the lake and an emphasis by marina owners has made DHL something of a houseboat haven. Pickaslip.com rated Dale Hollow as the top houseboating destination not only in the U.S., but on the continent, ahead of such vacationing heavyweights as Lake Powell in Utah and Lake Mead near Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. That speaks for itself.

15

Destination For Many Decades “Houseboating on Dale Hollow is just a fantastic way to spend a long weekend or an entire week,” said April Patterson of the Marina Association. “When you combine the scenery of the lake, all the things you can do on it, and so many of our member marinas having a wide variety of houseboats to choose from, we think we’re the premier houseboat destination not only in our area, but in the whole country.” Other activities you can enjoy on the lake include scuba diving and snorkeling (due to the famed water clarity), water sports in general, and primitive and developed site camping. “The lake truly offers something for everyone,” said Tom Allen of the Marina Association, “whether you want to spend a week with us, a long weekend, or even a day trip. We can provide

you with the beauty, facilities and equipment for a really enjoyable outing or week-long trip. We can help you sit back and relax, or burn up as much energy as you can stand. “However you choose to spend your time with us, you’ll enjoy yourself and you’ll see why so many people keep coming back year after year, and weekend after weekend,” Allen said.

Lake served by wide variety of marinas A total of 15 different marinas serve Dale Hollow, not including Corps of Engineers camping and boat-launching facilities. The marinas include facilities in Clay, Overton and Pickett counties in Tennessee and in Clinton and Cumberland counties in Kentucky.

Located in Tennessee are Cedar Hill Resort, Dale Hollow Marina, Eagle Cove Resort and Marina, East Port Marina and Resort, Holly Creek Resort and Marina, Horse Creek Dock and Resort, Mitchell Creek Marina, Star Point Resort, Sunset Marina and Resort and Willow Grove Resort. Located in Kentucky are Dale Hollow State Park Marina, Hendricks Creek Resort, Sulphur Creek Resort, Wisdom Dock and Wolf River Resort and Marina. What you’ll find about the many marinas and resorts surrounding the lake is that they’re not the cookie-cutter variety. Each resort has its own unique identity and set of services available. You’ll find contact information for each of these facilities accompanying this story.

Love Affair With Dale Hollow Houseboating

Started Early By Don Napier

Plas Darren Oliver photo

y love affair with house-boating started when I was about 10 years old. A neighbor took me and my brother on a weekend trip on his houseboat, along with his sons. From those days back in the 1950’s to today, I have yet to do anything outdoors that can compare with the time spent on Dale Hollow Lake on a houseboat. It combines the best parts of camping with boating. When you head up the lake, behind the wheel, in control of an 80-foot houseboat, you are on top of the world. Your job is finding the perfect bank to tie up to and on Dale Hollow, that means steep rocky points and deep, forested coves. Dale Hollow is a rustic lake with no development along its banks. You’re in total privacy when you’re tied to the bank. On a trip I took in the 1980’s that included my mother and father-in-law and other family members, I remember laying on the roof in chaise lounge lawn chairs and star gazing. You really can’t see the stars from your home because there is so much light around, but in the middle of Dale Hollow, it gets totally dark. Its just you and the stars. You’ve heard that saying, “everything tastes better outdoors?” I would change that to say, “everything tastes better when cooked on a houseboat.” Whether it’s the smell of fresh brewed coffee, or country ham and homefried potatoes, part of the attraction of going to the lake on a houseboat is the food. I would trade any 4-star hotel for a night on a hide-away bed, as long as it was on a houseboat on Dale Hollow Lake. When the sun rises, and breakfast is over, you can move the boat to another cove or just “run” up and down the lake and see the sights.

Church held camp on houseboats I did a feature story once on an Atlanta-based church who held their church camp on 12 houseboats, tied up, one to another, in a shallow cove on Dale Hollow in the upper end of the lake. I’ve said for years that it would be a great way to have a family reunion. Rent two or three houseboats (some sleep 18), park them adjacent to each other and let the communing begin! Today houseboats take advantage of the available technology. They no longer depend on CB Radios for communication with the Marina. Cell phones take care of that and lots of houseboats are equipped with DVD players, but who’d want to watch a movie when in an awesome place like Dale Hollow! Some boats have controls on the roof of the boat, allowing the captain to drive the ship from up top and there are improved grilles, slides for the kids, and improved bathrooms, and sleeping arrangements.

FINAL THOUGHT: Any season is a great time for a houseboat trip, but without a doubt, early fall is my favorite. When there’s a nip in the air, you just automatically sleep better and the Autumn colors on Dale Hollow are second to none. Take a small fishing boat with you (tie it to the stern) for trips to the dock and any fishing you might want to do. I have great memories of catching stripe and walleye under the lights, fishing at night from the houseboat.

The 2 or 3 bedroom lakeside or hillside cottages are completely furnished . . . for a weekend or extended stay! Dale Hollow is often referred to as the most beautiful lake in the Southeast—and not only claims the World record for smallmouth bass (11 lbs.-15 oz.) caught out of our resort— but the State records for Muskie, Rainbow trout, BlueGill, Crappie, Striped Bass, and Walleye!

Who Must Have A Tennessee Fishing License? If you take fish or attempt to take fish (including crayfish) by any method or if you assist someone else to do so, you must have a valid fishing license. There are some exceptions. No Fishing License Needed If: • You are under 13 years of age (resident or nonresident). • Landowners, their spouses and children, who fish on their farmland which is owned by an individual or a family. Landowners, their spouses and children must be residents of Tennessee but need not reside on the land. • Tenants, their spouses and dependent children who fish on farmland owned by an individual or a family. Tenants, their spouses and dependent children must be residents of Tennessee and must actually reside on the land and have permission of the landowner to fish. A tenant is a person who, for money or free rent, or other consideration, cares for farmland. The tenancy must be agricultural in nature. • Resident grandchildren (under 16) and resident great-grandchildren (under 16) who fish on farmland which is owned by their resident grandparents or great-grandparents. • First cousins who own farmland jointly or in common may fish on the farmland. Their children may fish as well. • You are on military leave, carrying a copy of your leave orders. A pass does not meet this requirement. • You are a resident who was born before March 1, 1926. (To qualify for this exemption, you must carry proof of your age and residency to show to a wildlife officer, if requested.) • It’s Free Fishing Day! • It’s Free Fishing Week! Children all ages 15 and younger can fish free during free fishing week.

Anyone who does not qualify for a resident license must purchase the appropriate nonresident license(s) to fish in Tennessee. Type 070 076 077 078 079 080 081

Breathtaking Sunrises

Swan Ridge is located in the beautiful Tennessee Upper Cumberland region. The region’s moderate climate and affordable cost of living in addition to its proximity to medical, educational and cultural amenities make it a desirable area for families as well as retirees.
