Jan’s Hallmark shares their 2020 mission to “put more 'care' in the world” and why cards mean more now than ever. Jan’s Hallmark shares their 2020 mission to “put more 'care' and why cards mean more now than ever.

As someone with three young kids, Eric Tschannen reads a lot of articles about how technology could impact them. He thinks technology use is a topic everyone is wrestling with today, not just parents.

"One of the more surprising trends that I read about across all ages is how lonely people are feeling," he said. A recent study found nearly half of 20,000 people surveyed said they often feel alone. "With our constant access to phones, Facebook and countless other ways to connect with each other through technology, you’d think people would feel less lonely than ever before. However, the study showed the younger, more technology-savvy, generation “Z” and Millennials scored the highest for loneliness."

MM: So if people are more connected why are they feeling more lonely? ET: I think this study and others are showing the difference between being a “real friend” and a “virtual friend.” That’s really what our 2020 message of “put more care in the world” is all about. While posting “happy birthday” or “congratulations” on someone’s Facebook wall is convenient it lacks the real caring connection that people need. At Jan’s Hallmark, we focus on getting you connected with the people you care about in a meaningful way. When a “real friend” takes the time to send a heartfelt card and write a personal message it means much more than a “congrats” on their wall. If a friend is going through a difficult time, a “real friend” caring enough to ask them to lunch or hand-delivering a card with an encouraging message will give them time to be heard and connect. That will mean so much more than a “hope it gets better” message from a “virtual friend." MM: So how can being a member at Jan’s help cure this epidemic of loneliness? ET: Well, we are committed to helping people “put more care in the world” and part of the way we are doing that is through our FREE card programs. Our offer this Valentine’s Day - from now until February 14 - is to receive a FREE mini-card with any purchase so our customers can “share the care.” After Valentine's Day, members can get a free card from our “Just Because” card line every Friday from February 21 through June 26. The “Just Because” line is full of messages that help you celebrate and support all of those everyday life moments. Members also get a coupon for a free card with every 10 cards they purchase through the year. Another recent study found that over 80 percent of people considered a handwritten note more meaningful than a digital correspondence. And to the youngest generations - “Z” and Millennials - written correspondence was even more meaningful than the average. So with our free card program, we will help support thousands more caring messages going into the world. Jan’s membership can help our customers connect more with the ones they love in a meaningful way.

MM: That sounds like a great reason to be a member at Jan’s Hallmark! ET: And that’s just the start of what our free rewards membership offers. We have member specials throughout the entire year. I’d love to talk more about rewards, but right now it’s time to start making our locally famous chocolate-covered strawberries. We will be making them locally and delivering them fresh on February 12-14!

ORGANIZE YOUR HOME With A Garage Or Closet Remodel

Interestingly, the garage is generally the most under-utilized space in the home. Although it’s an extension of the home - and is the dumping ground for everything that doesn’t fit in the house – it’s important to have a plan for garage storage that can help organize the entire home. When the holiday’s roll around and the sports seasons change, the home can be ready no matter what time of the year.

A Tailored Living garage organization specialist will help maximize garage storage space with custom garage cabinets and wall storage solutions tailored to the client’s particular activities.

“Won’t it be nice to find exactly what you’re looking for when you need it,” said Rich McQuay, owner of Tailored Living of West and St. Charles, Mo. “I guarantee you will wonder how you ever overlooked this valuable, extra garage storage space."

Using a combination of garage cabinets, shelves or Slatwall wall storage systems, overhead racks and custom garage flooring, the garage will be transformed into a masterpiece of utility and beauty, making garage organization a part of everyday life.

Custom Closets Not all closets are created equal. Throughout the home, there are undoubtedly several types of closets: walkin, reachin, utility, easily accessible and “why-isthis-even-here space?” Closet space is valuable in any home and, generally, no one believes they have enough.

Tailored Living’s designers can help maximize closet storage space throughout your home with custom closet systems. “Whether in the bedroom, family room or entryway, the company guarantees there is more space than you realize with our custom storage solutions,” McQuay said. “ We can help you unclutter and organize for more efficient, stress-free living with custom closet systems.”

Custom garage cabinets give a clean, uniform look to your garage. Cabinets bring order out of chaos by hiding everything behind closed doors. Clutter and piles are eliminated and there’s a designated place for every item in the garage. Open wall storage is ideal for sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels and hoses that create a safety hazard if stacked on the floor.

But no garage design is truly complete without new garage flooring. Untreated, dull concrete will not only detract from beautiful new cabinets, it’s harder to keep clean, tends to hold moisture and cold, and is ergonomically at odds with knees and backs. Tailored Living has a wide range of options for garage flooring to add that finishing touch.

The Jacob Family Expands Their Horizons Again

In December 1977, James D. Jacob (Jake) and his eldest son, James Jr. (Bud), co-founded the Jacob Co. when the two of them realized that “if we run a home improvement company on two simple principles we can be very successful: First, we have to really ‘care’ for our customers and listen to their wishes and second, we must simply do what we say we are going to do.” After the bath division success, the two brothers decided to take another direction. “Growth by acquisition!” They wanted to find and purchase a company that fit the Jacob model of a family atmosphere, longevity, quality of products and reputation with solid financial stability. The perfect fit came along when he met with Tom Chesley of Chesley Fence.

Father and son quickly set their plan into motion and became known as the largest wholesale seamless guttering company in the St Louis Metro region running as many as 10 seamless guttering trucks a day. This changed when Bud Jacob decided to leave the company to pursue other interests. He sold his share to his father in 1994 and his younger brother, Scott Jacob, took the reins as President of Jacob.

Scott Jacob had plans of his own and took the company in a different direction. His vision was to change Jacob from the wholesale sub-contract side of the industry to the retail side and compete against the larger remodeling companies in the region. This move created a new face for the company and by the year 2000, Jacob had solidified itself as an innovative leader in the home improvement industry with national recognition as an elite remodeler in several product lines.

The company endured a difficult change in 2001 when Jake passed away after a long battle with cancer. He left behind a family business that to this day still believes in the values they started with in 1977.

In 2006, Bud came back to Jacob full time. Bud’s return gave his brother, Scott, the time needed to work on growing the company. Scott looked at various products and ideas before finding the right fit and Jacob Showers and Baths was created as a division of Jacob. In 2013, Scott and Bud Jacob purchased Chesley Fence owned by Tom and Patty Chesley for 47 years – the two still work with Chesley Fence and Deck. The second acquisition in 2015 was an asset purchase of Daech and Bauer Roofing and Remodeling.

This year in April, Jacob is opening a second showroom in Fenton at 1707 Gilsinn Road. The family broke ground in November of 2019 (pictured at right), the foundation is in and walls are going up!

Jacob is still locally family owned and operated. They specialize in home improvements such as windows, replacement bathtubs, walk in showers, walk in bathtubs, sunrooms and more!
