Indigenous Australian poverty is more extreme than Australian non indigenous poverty and likely to resemble ‘absolute poverty’ normally seen in a third world country (Hope, 2008; Silburne et al, 2006; Zubrick, 2005; Hayes, 2000).

Extreme poverty is more likely to result in SEVERE NEGLECT (Watson, 2005; Giovannoni and Billingsley, 1970 cited by Dubowitz, 1994; Sullivan, 2000; Weatherburn and Lind, 1998).

ABOUT

Adequate nutrition is one of the basic necessities of life!

After seeing families in our community struggle to provide food for their families, for a wide range of reasons, it was clear help was needed. In 2007 our service to feed children was envisioned.

We consulted in depth with government and non government organisations, Indigenous organisations and businesses, about the need of such a service in Broome, recieving overwhelminG and unanimous support from all involved.


In February 2012 we began delivering meals every Saturday night. We currently prepare and deliver around 100 hot nutritious meals. Our volunteers receive regular thanks from our young clients, their parents and carers, building community spirit through hope shared by all involved.

Our dedicated team of volunteers work to raise funds, seeking donations, grants and bequests to support this important cause.

Your support , whether financial, or simply in

writing, is vital to the achievement of our goal, to provide meals and support 365 days a year.

Our vision is to do the following.

Raise funds to establish a food service that will provide meals 365 days a year; Support their social welfare, health and interests; Involve juveniles (and parents) in food preparation and distribution. Building awareness of the need for good nutrition, knowledge to prepare healthy, low cost meals and to build community spirit; Provide for recreation and social interaction. Create innovative projects aimed at improving community awareness of child poverty; Foster cooperation between government and non government organisations to reduce child poverty; Organise educational, cultural and social events to uplift and involve people in the community.

Feed the Little Children Inc. will strive to

be the lead organisation in Broome supporting permanent food relief, specifically for children. We will continue to work with other emergency relief providers through the Broome Emergency Relief forum hosted by the Department for Child Protection. Clint Durham (Chairperson)
