ACCEPTING THINGS YOU CANNOT CHANGE Are you a ruminator? Do your find yourself chewing over and over on things that are in the past or that are presently happening but that you cannot change? It can take up a great deal of energy and generally speaking the more you engage in this behaviour the lower your mood becomes or the higher your frustrations or worries rise. Often what we might feel like we’re looking for are some answers . why did this happen? Or what does this mean? And the hard reality is that quite often there will be no answer to these questions? Certainly trying to second guess the motivation behind anyone else’s behaviour is a game that very few of us win at. And so, very often the only helpful course of action is to find ACCEPTANCE. Now acceptance is NOT agreement, it is simply an acknowledgement that this thing has happened. And for some of us what keeps us from moving towards acceptance is discomfort. Whatever has happened has hurt us or made us uncomfortable and what unconsciously we may be looking for is an answer or perspective that will make it feel OK. We can learn to fear being uncomfortable or dealing with distress. In Mental Health terminology this is called Distress Intolerance … and in social media language it sounds it’s the absolute opposite of “it’s ok to not be ok!”. People with an intolerance for distress feel like they cannot cope with uncomfortable thoughts or feelings. For many people who turn to drink or drugs they are attempting to turn off ‘distress’. And yet we probably all know

someone who has endured something truly horrendous and still manages to stay bright and optimistic. The difference is that they have simply learned to tolerate distressful feelings and have come to an acceptance of what has happened to them, If you have a low tolerance for distress, it’s likely that you’ll use what’s called ‘catastrophic’ language to describe your experience of things in day to day life that others may find easier to brush off. It can sound like, “I am broken”(no you’re not!) or “this has ruined EVERYTHING” (nope, nothing ruins ‘everything’). If you find yourself going round and round in the same pattern of unhelpful thoughts, these strategies can be really helpful: Activities: immerse yourself in a project, hobby or work that needs your full attention. Contribute: do something for someone else… volunteer, encourage or do something practical. Comparison: compare what’s happening now to another time when you felt worse, or compare your situation to someone else’s. Emotions: do something to shift your mood like watch a funny movie or listen to uplifting music. Push away: pick another perspective; push away the unhelpful thought.. tell it to “get lost”. Thoughts: focus on filing your head with something else: read a book or learn something new.

VOMITING – IS IT A CAT THING? Margie Scherk DVM, DABVP (Feline) Vancouver, BC, Canada Vomiting: so cat. Or is it? For some reason, we believe that it is normal for cats to vomit. “It’s just what they do. It’s part of being a cat.” But it is no more “normal” for them than it is for us. It’s a sign of a problem. Cats ARE prone to problems that result in vomiting. These include exposure to toxins (from poisons, bacteria, food or kidney disease), stress motion sickness and, inflammation of the intestine (inflammatory bowel disease [IBD], colitis, constipation), stomach, liver or pancreas. How should a caring cat parent help their puking puss? If kitty is otherwise well, it isn’t an emergency, however your cat will need help from their doctor. If your cat is acting ill, get her to the veterinarian quickly. In less urgent cases, your vet may send home dewormer against intestinal parasites or a bland, readily digestible food for a week to sort things out. As part of a thorough examination, your vet will check under your cat’s tongue for string (thread, tinsel, etc.). A sore mouth (yes, cats WILL still eat even if their mouth hurts) may cause them to “binge and barf”. Oral pain is no fun – your vet can help that! Further workup, (blood tests and urinalysis), is needed in urgent or persistent cases because the cause for vomiting may be systemic rather than gut related. The more information you give your vet, the better. •When did the vomiting first start? •How often does it happen? •Is the timing associated with eating? If so, does it occur right after eating or 4-8 hours afterwards?

•How much of it is there? (If a puddle, report in inches.) Liquid deposits on carpet make answering that question difficult, but if it is a pile, you can still report the size. • Can you see semi-digested food in it? What about hair, feathers, grass? •What does the process look like? (Get out your mobile phone and video it if you can.) Is it preceded by yowling, drooling, lip-smacking and repeated swallowing? If so, that suggests stomach or below. If the process looks less upsetting and the vomit is tubular, it may well be from the esophagus (regurgitation). •Did the problem started after or around the time of any change in diet? •Let your vet know if your cat been receiving any over-the-counter treatments, medications or homeopathic remedies? •Are any of your other cats sick? Infectious diseases that cause vomiting may also affect the other cats in the home. Remember to mention anything else that doesn’t seem normal with your kitty. Is there any diarrhea, weight loss, coughing, or increase in the amount of urine or drinking? In older cats, changes can occur gradually so you may have to think back 1 or 2 years and mentally compare current health to previous energy, temperament, appetite, weight, mobility, etc. In a younger cat, changes in health tend to be more abrupt. Hairballs (tubular wads of hair) are also not normal! They represent either an abnormal increase in hair ingestion or decreased normal passage of hair. Vomiting always has a cause. Kitty does not enjoy vomiting. Get it checked out.

•What does it look like (colour, quantity, consistency, For more information go to www.felinefriends.org.uk/vomiting contents)? Is it clear, colourless liquid or froth? Is it yellow or green? Is there fresh red blood or black coffee ground-like contents? Is it slimy or watery when you wipe it up? Are there worms in ToDoes advertise call 01629 57638 or email sharon@sharonshirleyconsulting.com13 it? it smellplease like feces?

Holidays are great for us all to relax, but can too much relaxation actually be a bad thing? We go on holiday in order for our brains to relax and recoup our energy. That’s a good thing, but have you noticed how children relax so much over the school holidays to the extent they are ‘BORED!!!’? They get so relaxed and chilled out by the end of the long summer holidays that they will roll about on the sofa and watch endless TV or play on the computer. Their brains seem to require mindless repetitive low levels of stimulation and they are eternally hungry! If this seems familiar then your child is demonstrating a proven fact from educational psychologists who say that with a long holiday the children’s brains relax and some of the learning falls away. When they go back to school in September it takes a few weeks to get back up to speed and return to the same level of attainment that they had at the end of the previous school year. Kip has the answer to this! We offer a summer school during the last two weeks of the school holidays where your child can experience a whole new fun way of learning. We use a range of paper based and computer games which challenge and teach English and Maths, so that by the time your child starts school

again they will have recouped the learning they had in July and in most cases have improved upon it as well. In a relaxed atmosphere, they can learn at their own rate because the Kip programme is designed to fit your child’s needs. The unseen but crucial effect of these summer school experiences is the increased self confidence that children gain from suddenly seeing that they are no longer haunted by fractions, are not dreading decimals or struggling with spelling. Last year James brought his friend Oscar along to the summer school and they both went back to school in a stronger position than when they left the previous July. Now James and Oscar come regularly and are really flying at school. Even their teachers are recommending Kip to other parents now!!

Give your child a good ending to the long summer holidays and enrol them into the summer school for the last two weeks and see for yourself what Kip can achieve with your child. We do a free assessment on each child in order to design the correct learning experience for them, so book your place and assessment slot by calling Jo at Kip McGrath Matlock on 01629 56611.

Bakewell’s 18th International Day of Dance We are back! After two quiet years on the streets of Bakewell, we are so excited that the 18th Day of Dance will be held on Saturday 25 June, filling our picturesque town again with the music and dance from around the world. The Day heralds the start of Bakewell Carnival Week, there is a Farmers Market and with local well dressings on show, it is a day out not to miss, so join the several thousand people who travel from around the country to enjoy the dancing, colour and fun. This year up to 30 groups will be displaying dance styles from around the world at six outdoor venues from 11.00am to 4.30pm. Come and watch the displays, then join in and have a go! You can travel the world with lively upbeat dances from Hollywood shows, American Line Dancing and the more traditional style from the Appalachian Mountains. We are delighted to welcome back La Tierra Flamenco dancers as well as the very colourful Indian beats, who always put on such a brilliant show. Ballroom and Bollywood will be on offer along with a taste of Salsa from the Rueda Academy. Old favourites such as Black Pig Border Morris and Timberline Steve who has drawn in the crowds for years with his precision line dancing group. Watch out for the captivating Jose Oliva of Feel It and Dance, who will again be bringing his energetic dancers and entertaining us with some rhythmic Zumba numbers and maybe a flavour of Spanish too. Joining in is a must with this one. To add to the colour of the

whole day, traditional British dances will be well represented with plenty of Morris and clog dancing. Local dance team, Well Heeled Appalachian Dancers continue to host this event which draws so many people into the town and gives Bakewell a real buzz for the start their carnival week. Bakewell Day of Dance is very much a community event involving local groups and interests. There will be opportunities to join in and learn a few basics of the individual dances or you can just relax and enjoy the performances – and it’s all free! Don’t be put off if it rains as there will be an alternative wet weather programme in the town hall from 12.00 am. For further information about these and the rest of the day, visit our website. The whole day will be rounded off in fine style with a ceilidh at Bakewell Town Hall, with music and calling provided by the ever popular Well Dressed Band. The international flavour of the day will continue here with some dances from around the world. Proceeds of the evening will go to a Bakewell based charity supporting Rwandan people (www.thegobokarwandatrust.co.uk). For more information on the day or tickets for the ceilidh ring Jude on 01629 815469 or Di on 01629 812104. You can also visit our website www.bakewelldayofdance.co.uk
