Together, let’s make it a memorable experience for all the sheriffs visiting from across the state, as well as their families. Consider joining in the fun and chaperoning the visiting families. Jail Print Shop Grand Opening
Pictured above left: Sheriff Lupe Valdez kicks off the print shop grand opening with members of the media on June 19. Top right: Female students begin their first week at the print shop. The new jail print shop is helping teach some inmates a new trade. The program is made possible through a partnership with El Centro College, which has trained 300 students with basic computer literacy skills. Currently there are three women enrolled for the Monday and Tuesday class, and three men attend Wednesday and Thursday class. The state-of-the-art environmentally friendly equipment is located in the North Tower and Dallas County employees can submit orders by logging on to dallascounty.org. All county employees need is their Dallas County login credentials. In the future, print shop directors are working to open up the printing services to area non-profit organizations.

Corporate Challenge...Get Your Game Face On
It’s that time of year! We need players, coaches and cheerleaders! The Richardson Corporate Challenge is an Olympic style competition involving as many as 22 athletic and non-athletic events held from August 17 through October 19. The event kicks off with an opening ceremony and after plenty of competition it ends with a closing ceremony. Companies compete in events ranging from softball to volleyball and billiards to golf. Activities are scheduled during the week after normal business hours and on weekends. Employees, spouses, and retirees are all eligible to participate. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The annual Texas Sheriff’s Association Conference will be held in Dallas July 21-24, 2012. Sheriffs from across the state, along with their families, will be hosted and your help is requested. Chaperones are needed for the following family activities: Sun. July 22 15 chaperones from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Alley Cat Bowl 2008 Pleasant Ridge, Arlington, TX
Mon. July 23 25 chaperones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dallas World Aquarium & NRH2O (lunch served at waterpark)
Tues. July 24 25 chaperones from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 20 chaperones from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Dallas Cowboys Stadium Tour & Six Flags (lunch and dinner at Six Flags– lunch on their own & dinner served) Chaperones meals and admission fees are paid by the conference for each activity. Chaperones will ride the bus with the group from the Anatole Hotel to the activity. Chaperones must be at least 21 years of age. In the Community Capt. David Mitchell earned a silver medal for his age category at the 2012 Police Olympics. This is his second medal in two years. One of the riders fell at mile 27 and Mitchell stopped to stay with him until EMTs arrived— for about 7 minutes, forfeiting his chances of a gold medal.
Deputy Guzman and Deputy Franklin participated in the Wounded Warrior 10K Run in Irving on June 10. The recruiting team, including Deputy Garcia and Deputy White, was in attendance letting the community know the Dallas Sheriff’s Department is hiring. #jointheteam

Deputy Freddie Bruner Gone Fishing!
After more than two decades, Deputy Bruner is reeling in his retirement. Captain Sheila CarterBass and the rest of the transportation unit prepared a beautiful and colorful send-off celebration for Bruner and his family on June 19. Brunner began his career with the Dallas Sheriff’s Department in 1989.

Clean Air Task Force Supporter
During the June 28 awards ceremony, the Dallas Sheriff’s Department took time to recognize Commissioner Maurine Dickey for her support to the Clean Air Task Force. Commissioner Dickey provided over $270,000 from her road and bridge budget to keep the task force alive through this year. In 2011, the task force issued more than 3,000 citations, made 58 arrests, confiscated over 1,000 counterfeit inspection stickers and filed more than 90 cases. Officials estimate that more than 100,000 vehicles display counterfeit or otherwise fraudulent inspection certificates annually in Dallas County. Established in 2008, the task force received the EPA Clean Air Excellence Award last year.

Ms. Marlene James, DMU manager, celebrated her confirmation as pastor of her church on June 24 and many of her Dallas County colleagues were in attendance.

WELL WISHES June 6, 2012: Detective Ludwig’s home was struck by lightning resulting in a fire which caused extensive damage to the home. His son’s bedroom was completely destroyed, though thankfully no one was injured in the storm. June 21, 2012: Ioma Dean, mother of Investigator Ken Dean, Personnel Section, suffered a stroke this month. Please keep the Dean Family in your prayers. DEATHS May 4, 2012: Manuel Rodriguez, brother-in-law of Miriam Rodriguez, DMU Process Support Supervisor, passed away due to liver complications. On May 30, 2012 her other brother-in-law, Roque Rodriguez passed away in a tragic accident. Both men lived in the Dominican Republic. May 31, 2012: Former Sheriff’s Deputy Gilbert Jacobson passed away. He served 18 years with the Dallas Sheriff’s Department.

Miss Small graduated Cum Laude, in the top 5 percent of her senior class at Eastern Hills High School in Fort Worth. She plans to attend Texas Wesleyan University in the fall and major in English. Her goal is to be an English teacher.
