NOVEMBER 2013 HIGHLIGHTS

Behind The BADGE DALLAS COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT FROM THE SHERIFF The holiday season is upon us and there is so much to be thankful for. With the crazy unpredictable weather, let’s make sure to keep ourselves healthy because Dallas County citizens count on us to keep them safe. Kudos to the men and women who keep the traffic flow running smoothly especially during the winter weather conditions. We have such a dedicated work force. In addition, this holiday season is a great opportunity to continue to give back to the community. We anticipate another successful Bryant Joseph Christmas in the Community event later this month. Have a happy and safe holiday season!

November 12, 2013 marked the graduation date for the Eighth Dallas Sheriff’s Citizens Academy. The evening lecture series was established in 2008 with the goal to increase public awareness, bridge the communication gap and to increase rapport between the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and the citizens of Dallas County. This year’s keynote speaker was Judge Robert Francis, who currently presides over the Dallas 4-C SAFPF Re-entry Court. The class sergeant, Michael Resk, formerly served in the U.S. Navy and their class historian, Vonda Freeman, currently manages 12 courts for Dallas CSCD. Graduates have an opportunity to continue volunteering through the department’s reserve division. The Dallas Sheriff’s Citizens Academy enlists a class each fall, close to the Labor Day holiday. The daughters of Chief Deputy Blaise Mikulewicz and Parkland Hospital Doctor Esmail Porsa both earned spots on national teams at the Mad Frog Volleyball Club. They will be competing in tournaments throughout the country this winter and spring with hopes of qualifying to play at the national championships, which will be held in Minneapolis Minnesota next July. In order to earn a spot on their teams, the girls dedicated several months to training in preparation for the November tryouts. Congratulations to both of them and their families!

Happy Retirement! After 18 years with the Dallas Sheriff’s Department, Ms. Leelamma Joseph retired on Wednesday November 27, 2013. The Sheriff’s Bridge to Communities, which is the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department official charity, believes it is important to make safe bicycles accessible to underserved communities. Unfortunately, the reality is that the benefits of bicycles are not accessible to all residents. For many families, the cost of purchasing a bicycle for their children is a major hardship. Through The Sheriff’s Bridge to Communities, the Inmate Programs Division has established a “Holiday Bike Giveaway” program designed to benefit children from low-income families who do not own a bicycle. •Therefore, we are recruiting private sector and community agencies that would like to donate bicycles to the inmate bike repair shop. •The donated bikes will be assembled and refurbished by non-violent inmates who will receive training and the vocational skills required to assemble and repair bicycles. The bicycles will be donated to families during the upcoming holiday season. The magical bike giveaway is a community effort in every sense of the word and would not be possible without the help of our community volunteers and donations. The first donation was made by The Salvation Army on Harry Hines! If you would like to donate an unassembled bicycle or volunteer, please contact: Inmate Program Director, Yolanda Lara- Reyna at ylara@dallascounty.org (214) 653-3474 or Assistant Director, Maggie Sanchez at maggie.sanchez@dallascounty.org (214) 653-2839.
