SEPTEMBER 2013 HIGHLIGHTS
Behind The BADGE DALLAS COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT FROM THE SHERIFF October 1st marked the 30th anniversary of National Night Out. We had several officers representing across the county at more than a dozen locations. Dallas County citizens know that we remain as committed as ever to serve and protect their safety. In the mix, we had the pleasure of getting the community acquainted with one of our newest military-style vehicles which will assist our special tactical operations when dangerous situations arise. September 2013 also marked a new chapter in my executive staff team, with the departure of Assistant Chief Cheryl Wilson.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department was well represented during the 30th annual National Night Out celebrations across Dallas County. There were 14 official locations throughout the county where the department spent time with community residents. Among these location celebrations were: the Kaufman Police Department, Forney’s Heartland Community, the Kiest Park gathering with Council member Dwaine R. Carraway, Creek Crossing in Mesquite, the Dart Police gathering, as well as the Pagewood Townhouses Association, Glenn Heights and the Precinct 4 Grand Prairie celebration with Constable Roy Williams. All National Night Out festivities were fun filled and the department is thankful to everyone for their amazing hospitality. Until next year!

National Night Out 2013
National Night Out 2013: sights from all the action on October 1st. There were plenty of children excited to take photos with the marked vehicles and deputies; others were as excited about the goodie giveaways which included coloring books, key chains, etc.; some of our own had the chance to bring out their inner child while spending time with the community. The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime”, in 1984 began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. NATW’s National Night Out program culminates annually, on the first Tuesday of August (In Texas, the first Tuesday of October).

Family and friends gathered on September 26, 2013 to send Chief Wilson off in style. There were several speeches reflecting on the evolution of her leadership roles within the department since the start. She will be missed!

September 2013 Employee of the Month Senior Executive Secretary Dora Elizondo Ms. Dora Elizondo serves as executive secretary for the Detentions Housing Bureau, as well as the Technical Services Bureau. Her regular duties consist of sorting and distributing hundreds of letters, memos, reports, and any other correspondence that must be presented to the bureaus. Under the Office of Detentions Administration, her two assistant chiefs serve more than 1,500 Dallas County Sheriff’s Department employees, an estimated 6,400 inmates, as well as numerous criminal justice professionals who may include some of the county and district judges. Ms. Elizondo is fluent in Spanish, and because of this, she is often called upon to translate for people on the phone and in person. She is responsible for ensuring that all inter-departmental and non-departmental mail be distributed to the correct location and correct time. She updates her two assistant chiefs with important information as it pertains to the two bureaus, as it becomes available. She is often called upon by line staff to provide information on procedures and or policies. She is instrumental in providing or finding this information to all who inquire. She always carries out her duties with a smile and never complains of any assignment given to her. Also, she can be relied upon to finish any assignment given to her with little follow up, if any, required.
