As we celebrate under this year’s theme of “Unmasking Excellence, Leadership and Character Shaped by Service,” we are reminded daily of the importance of leadership development and guiding our communities, meeting their needs and equipping them with the tools to help them thrive in an uncertain world. Tonight’s honorees embody the character and temperament needed in our communities and world, their accomplishments to date reflect an ability to get things done. Leaders such as this evening’s honorees are paramount in keeping balance in our city and state. When we return to our communities, let’s be reminded and inspired by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, “We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now.” Family and friends, be not dismayed by the action of so-called leaders, but motivated by the real leaders we see in action every day, all the while remaining deeply rooted in our faith. Again, thank you for attending our gala, supporting the future of the young leaders of our communities who are depending upon us. I look forward to celebrating and fellowshipping with you all.

Humanitarian Award Education

D

R. DONNIE COLLINS BREEDLOVE, Inspiration and commitment to education were instilled into Dr. Donnie Collins Breedlove from an early age. In 1950, in the tiny agricultural community of Littig, Texas, few people attended college. The exceptions were the Collins family children. Donnie, and all seven of the siblings, graduated from college.

The Littig High School Principal saw the potential in Donnie Collins and was able to secure a full scholarship for her to attend Huston-Tillotson University (then Huston-Tillotson College). His confidence in her knowledge and abilities continued to inspire her as she earned both a Masters of Education degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Doctor of Education degree from Nova University, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Donnie has consistently been a trailblazer throughout her career in education. In 1966 she blazed the trail for school integration as one of two African-American teachers to integrate the school faculties in the Dallas Independent School District. As an outstanding teacher at John Neely Bryant Elementary School she valued her opportunity to inspire students just as she had been inspired to love learning. In 1980, she was assigned as the principal at A. Maceo Smith High School, making her the first female high school Principal (of any ethnicity) in Dallas ISD. She retired in 1992, after 38 years of exemplary service, 22 years as a principal and 16 years as a classroom teacher. After retirement Donnie continued to serve in the Dallas ISD for 17 additional years as an Interim Principal or Assistant Principal. Donnie has provided a lifetime commitment of 55 years of service to the Dallas Independent School District. In 2008, Donnie blazed another trail as she was inducted into the African-American Educators’ Hall of Fame. Donnie was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated during her college years at HustonTillotson University. Donnie has faithfully been an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for 65 years. She has been a member of Alpha XI Omega Chapter in Dallas for 62 years, and is a Golden Soror, Life Member, and a Former President of the Chapter. Donnie has been married to her husband, Frank Breedlove, for 62 years. He was also her college sweetheart. Frank is a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter. They have one daughter, Dr. Cheryl Wright, an educator in the Dallas ISD; one granddaughter, Whitney Hawkins, who is the six generation of teachers in the Collins family; one grandson (Whitney’s husband) Phillip Hawkins; and one great grandson, William Hawkins. Today, the Breedloves enjoy working side by side for their favorite causes: St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church, Huston-Tillotson Alumni Association, and the Rotary Club of Dallas. Donnie has earned numerous recognitions for her service and generosity, but among the most treasured honors are unforgettable moments from long ago.

As Donnie was inspired by others, so she has inspired others through the years – passing on the blessings from one generation to the next.
