LECTURE / Scott SPECHT
Scott SPECHT is the founder and principal of Specht Architects, an architecture, design, property development, and research firm. His award-winning work features residential, commercial, and universitybased projects, including the Carpenter, an environmentally sustainable adaptive re-use of a former union hall; the Preston Hollow Residence, a 2020 Record Houses award winner; and the Sangre de Cristo House, which recently received the Harnar Award for Contemporary Architecture. Specht’s body of work over the last twenty-five years has received multiple awards from the AIA, TxA, the Architectural League and many other professional groups. The studio’s designs were featured at the Museum of Modern Art, with press features in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Architectural Record, Architecture, Architectural Digest, Praxis, Interior Design, Residential Architect, Metropolis, and Texas Architect. Prior to founding Specht Architects, Scott was part of Studio Daniel Libeskind, Deborah Berke Architect, and Kohn Pedersen Fox. Scott teaches and has been a featured speaker for leading conferences and academic forums. Scott’s book, Coffee Lids, has received acclaim for its take on the design of “unseen objects” that populate our lives. His newest project, the Stealth House, is a prototype for a completely new idea of single-family living in the U.S. Spechtarchitects
LECTURE / Barbara BESTOR
Barbara BESTOR, FAIA, Founding Principal of Bestor Architecture, has actively redefined Los Angeles architecture with a practice that rigorously engages the city through design, art, and urbanism. Increasingly, the studio applies L.A.’s lessons to national undertakings. She explores the architectural form through experiments in spatial arrangements, graphics, and colorevident in her projects from custom residences to headquarters for international companies. Her varied and progressive body of work, which focuses on both architecture and interior design, connects with people on many levels, often outside the traditional boundaries of architecture. She believes that good design creates an engaged urban life and embraces the ‘strange beauty’ that enhances everyday experience. Barbara has designed new ways of creating accessible urbanism and “stealth density” in projects including Blackbirds, a groundbreaking typology for dense housing in Echo Park; retail and restaurant flagships; dynamic workspaces for Beats By Dre and Snap; the Silverlake Conservatory of Music; award-winning residences; restorations of iconic houses by Lautner, Neutra and Schindler; and pioneering arts projects that are deeply rooted in their communities and cultural context. Barbara received her undergraduate degree at Harvard, studied at the AA in London and received a MARCH at SCI-Arc. Barbara is the author of Bohemian Modern, Living in Silver Lake and has been published widely, including Dwell, LUXE, Architect, Architectural Record, Review and Digest, the New York Times, and Metropolis. She is the recipient of numerous regional and national design awards, lectures and serves on design juries, and has been honored with prestigious recognitions, including being named to the Architectural Digest AD 100.

LECTURE / Bernard TSCHUMI The Bob James Memorial Lecture
Tschumi’s belief that architecture is the most important innovation of our time has influenced both his practice and his academic career. He is a tenured professor at Columbia’s GSAPP, where he formerly served as Dean. Publications include Architecture Concepts: Red is Not a Color, Tschumi, and Tschumi on Architecture. His drawings and models are in the collections of several major museums, including MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, which presented a major retrospective of his work. The Venice Biennale and the NAI have also exhibited his designs. Tschumi was awarded France’s Grand Prix National d’Architecture as well as numerous awards from the AIA and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Shane Coen, FASLA has led Coen+Partners, his innovative landscape architecture studio, for over 25 years. Grounded in an approach of contextual driven design, the firm collaborates with the world’s leading and emerging global design architects, artists, and engineers to create site solutions that are rooted in place while embracing programmatic social and ecological goals with innovation and beauty. The studio has built a distinguished body of award-winning work because of its leadership, creativity, and disciplined design approach. It has also received awards from the AIA, the ASLA, the GSA Design Excellence program and recognition in The New York Times, Metropolis, Dwell, and Architectural Record.
In addition to his practice, Shane has taught studios at Harvard’s GSD, lectures extensively throughout the world, and was featured in a waterfront symposium organized by the Netherlands.
