ISSUE 07: SUMMER 2014

WELCOME EDITOR Ellen Gray

EXECUTIVE EDITOR Carolyn Bartels

The snow has melted, the rains have turned everything a vibrant shade of green, and the streets of Denver are alive with people out enjoying the beautiful warm summer days. There are concerts galore, delicious outdoor dining and fantastic parks where people are walking, biking, riding, rollerblading and even practicing yoga or tai chi. In fact, Denver and Colorado offers some of the best biking/hiking/walking trails around. Just be sure a camera is included on your excursions, because the fields of wildflowers, the romping wildlife and the stunning sunsets are things you will want to capture and bring home. Summertime in Colorado is a study in contrasts, and there is always something to

experience. Just outside of Denver is Boulder, where street performers entertain passersby with a variety of acts that will keep you laughing or scratching your head at the absurdity. A bit further north in Estes Park, the spirit of the Old West is alive and kicking, with a slew of stables offering scenic horseback rides that will just for a moment conjure up images of a rustic, more unsettled time. To the west are the breathtaking Rocky Mountains, from Keystone, Copper and Breckenridge to Vail, Aspen and Telluride. Each mountain town boasts a unique flavor, and offers something for everyone. From the plushest boutique hotel to the most welcoming timbered condo, the mountains beckon tourists and locals to enjoy a summertime playground unlike any other. And then there’s Denver – the city that stands a mile-hi and holds its own as a mecca of diversity, with some of the region’s greatest dining, arts and entertainment, shopping and attractions. The Botanic Gardens is ablaze in a glory of glass art sculptures crafted by artist Dale Chihuly, and The Denver Zoo never ceases to surprise visitors with its fantastic mix of all types of wildlife. The Butterfly Pavilion literally brings a smile to your face with its thousands of colorful butterflies fluttering about the grounds, and the

downtown aquarium is home to an original and fascinating underground adventure. The city of Golden, a short distance from downtown, is a charming area for shopping and dining, while the Santa Fe Arts District and the RiNo district house loads of phenomenal art galleries. If festivals are your thing, Denver and Colorado are the place to be in the summer months, where mouthwatering food and crisp exotic wines and craft beer are just part of the fun. Great music, original art and of course people-watching make each festival a go-to destination for entertainment. If dining al fresco is your thing, many restaurants throughout the state throw open their doors in the summer months. Enjoy an early morning cup of coffee, an afternoon sweet or a glass of chilled wine and realize how fortunate you are to be staying, even for just a few days, among the majesty of the Colorado Rockies.

Keeping Up With the Jones Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts at the Historic Jones Theater The Jones Theater is located in one of Colorado’s most picturesque settings, the town of Westcliffe in the Wet Mountain Valley. This small town, steeped in Colorado history, has a rich cultural core as well, from jazz camps and opera to live theater performance at the Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts at the Historic Jones Theater (WCPA). The Jones Theater was originally built as a saloon well over 100 years ago, the quintessential watering hole where ranchers and miners met to let off steam. By the 1920s, whiskey and shoot ‘em ups gave way to more refined forms of entertainment, including “the moving picture show.“ At that time, Westcliffe’s enlightened

18

D E N V E R H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

grocer bought the saloon and made it into a movie theater, which it remained, surviving a slew of upgrades and owners, until 1992. The Relph Family Trust took the reins of the WCPA in 1992, and the facility began offering acting classes, theater education and exposure for new playwrights with the cooperation of universities statewide. The theater presents eight plays throughout the summer. Using the original 1938 “Peerless” carbon arc movie projector, first-run movies are screened year round. The theater’s Artistic Director chair is occupied by Broadway and film actress Anne Kimbell Relph, who also serves as executive director and president of the board. Ms. Relph’s impressive credits include a starring role at the famed Pasadena Playhouse in 1944, where she was the lead child actor in Lillian Hellman’s The

Children’s Hour. She starred on Broadway with Eddie Bracken and opposite Marlon Brando in Arms and the Man. In 1956, Anne was leading lady at Denver’s Elitch Garden’s Theatre and, in 1958, had the female lead in Roar Like a Dove in London’s West End. The play was produced by none other than Vivian Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier. It is uncanny to have someone of Ms. Relph’s experience and passion for theater in the driver’s seat of the WCPA, Colorado’s gold nugget of community theater. As a not-for-profit, the WCPA has ongoing needs such as reinsulation and a new floor for the auditorium. Eventually the goal is to install an audio system for the hearing impaired. This is a must-see for travelers, and for more information, including the latest performance calendar, visit JonesTheater.com. — CAROLYN BARTELS

Pub with a View River Valley Ranch Welcomes Popular Aspen Eatery

22

D E N V E R H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

A popular Aspen restaurant recently opened its second location at River Valley Ranch, a beautiful golf course community located at the base of Mt. Sopris in Carbondale, Colo. Situated in the magnificent Crystal River Valley, the newly opened Finbarr’s Irish Pub is a local favorite among Aspen residents. The new venue promises to be a great draw for golfers, hikers and sightseers who are visiting for the day or staying in the area. Locals favor the fish and chips, burgers and Irish stew. “Our Executive Chef and General Manager, Joe Flamer, has created an eclectic menu of traditional Irish fare like fish

and chips and Shepherd’s Pie, combined with delicious dishes like tabbouleh and roasted vegetable salad and green curry with coconut rice. With an array of dishes, some locally sourced such as our Colorado striped bass, Finbarr’s presents a new dining experience for the Carbondale area,” says restaurant manager Carol Peachey. Finbarr’s is a welcome addition to the community, with its delicious pub-style fare and casual, inviting atmosphere. Sports enthusiasts love to congregate around the bar area, where they can take in the latest golf tournament, football game or skiing event. “We are thrilled to bring the lively Irish pub atmosphere and exceptional gastro pub experience we have created at Finbarr’s in Aspen

to this breathtaking location in Carbondale,” says Peachey. “We hope a new set of discriminating diners will gather, raise a pint and enjoy our cozy pub with spectacular views of Mt. Sopris.” Best of all, if golf is your thing, River Valley Ranch is a true gem, hailed by Golf Magazine as “the new jewel of the Rockies.” The Jay Morrish-designed championship golf course is open to the public and offers excellent instruction from acclaimed professionals, including programs for women, juniors, and week-long clinics. The scenery alone makes this a fantastic golf outing; combined with the magnificence of playing a mountain golf course, this is a don’t-miss for travelers.

Work of Art Daniel Sprick Illuminates the Realism

For artist Daniel Sprick, reality is in the details. His paintings span the spectrum of compelling portraits to magnificent landscapes to intricately developed still lifes, yet each of his works require the beholder to take a step back, then perhaps forward, to fully grasp the complexity of what appears on the canvas. His work is ever-evolving; a glimpse of his studio demonstrates a diversity that is solely his trademark. A highly regarded artist, Sprick has a painting in the National Museum of American Art in the Smithsonian, and a long-standing public collection resides at the Denver Art Museum. He has numerous works in both private and public collections around the world.

24

D E N V E R H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

Now through November 2, 2014, an original exhibition of Sprick’s work is on display at the Denver Art Museum. The solo exhibition, titled Daniel Sprick’s Fictions: Recent Works, is a collection of more than 40 pieces that showcase the artist’s portraits and still lifes. Raised in Glenwood Springs outside of Aspen, Colo., Sprick was influenced by lesser-known artists representative of the 19th Century: Jules Breton, Bastien LePage, George Claussen, Dagnon-Bouveret and Forbes. “My favorite genre is realism,” he says, “because it’s straightforward and reflects the works of the Greek and Roman ideals borne in Europe in the 1400s. There were two Renaissances; one in Italy and

one in the Flemish region, and this is what is most meaningful to me and my work.” According to Timothy J. Standring, Gates Foundation Curator of Painting and Sculpture who is organizing Sprick’s current exhibition at the Denver Art Museum, “The more we dwell on his paintings, the more we become aware that they are anything but a part of our world, and are, instead, poetic renditions of his own making.” As a child, Sprick was a prolific drawer, inspired by his father who sat him down at age five, and on a blank piece of paper drew an image. “I was completely overwhelmed and I took that idea and have been doing it ever since,” he says. In his 20s, Sprick began painting portraits,

which remains a central focus for this immensely talented artist. More than the subject of the painting, it is in the telling, through his eyes and senses, that a fantastic work emerges. “I think you can take any ordinary individual or scene and turn it into a masterpiece. It does not have to start out as extraordinary to be a subject worth painting. But regardless of what you’re painting, it’s really more about the energy you bring as an artist than about the subject itself.” Sprick uses the example of a landscape that by its very description sounds compelling enough to want to capture on canvas. “If I go to a location with the intention of painting a beautiful cathedral but I feel the composition is not just right, I

may very well end up painting an old garage next to the structure. Whatever I’m painting, I want it to have a strength that will catch your eye from across the room, but then will continue to provide growing detail that keeps offering satisfaction to you as it is approached.” It’s that same poetic interpretation that makes the work of artist Daniel Sprick so striking. It’s the little details, painstakingly incorporated in such a way that draws you in and makes you want to study it just a bit longer, to understand the subject, and, for a moment, to experience it through the creative eyes of the artist.

D E N V E R H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

Not that long ago, tourists looking for memorable downtown Denver dining and entertainment options had to carefully plan their outing, down to transportation, venue and hours. Times have changed, and today the mile-hi city’s bustling downtown offers entertainment galore, and even a first-rate mall located in the epicenter of many of the city’s best hotels. Denver Pavilions, situated on the popular 16th Street Mall, offers top-shelf dining, fabulous boutiques and a lively nightlife … truly a fun destination for anyone and everyone. An easy walk down the colorful 16th Street pedestrian mall or a quick ride on the free 16th Street mall shuttle, it’s easy to see why Denver Pavilions has become such a hotspot for tourists and locals seeking great shopping, a delicious meal or a fun night out. Here’s a quick look at some of the variety of great and unique options at Denver Pavilions:

FOR FOODIES

FOR SHOPPERS

Lime – An American Cantina & Tequila Bar. This locally owned restaurant offers more than 150 varieties of tequila and great fresh Mexican food. The ambience is as fun as the fare, with a phenomenal third-floor patio space that affords great views of the bustling 16th Street Mall.

Rosey’s Boutique and Outrageous Accessories. Upscale women’s clothing that you probably won’t see anywhere else.

5280 Burger Bar. A double whammy of fun, featuring fresh gourmet burgers and an attached creamery, where a full-time ice cream chef crafts handmade ice cream and shaketails (you guessed it … cocktails and a milkshake!).

I HEART Denver Store. A must-see for tourists, offering 100-percent Colorado-made merchandise – and 70 percent of sales go back to the artists. Owner Samuel Schimek is an artist and designer who brings flair, originality and creativity to this fabulous store. This boutique has won more awards and kudos than we can count!

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria. If the secret to New York-style pizza truly is the water, this awardwinning pizzeria has brought the same flavor to Denver, using water that matches the mineral content and composition used in its original Brooklyn Pizzeria. cclaimed Chef Mary Nguyen represents a true blend of heritage and nationality. She is a firstgeneration American-born citizen; her family fled to the States following the fall of Saigon in 1975. Nguyen’s father, a member of the South Vietnamese Navy, gathered her siblings, mother, grandmother and cousins, and the group escaped with just the clothes on their backs. In time, the Nguyen family found its way to Colorado. Growing up, Mary’s family life revolved around the kitchen. On a daily basis, the young girl absorbed and watched her mother and grandmother create dishes of vegetables, fish, shrimp, beef and chicken, each meal prepared in a unique style, a bowl of rice as accompaniment.

These meals brought the family together, nurturing the timeless tradition of cooking and eating as a social connection; a time to talk, laugh and catch up on the day. Nguyen earned a finance degree from the University of Colorado, yet she understood innately this was not where her true passion lay. Trading the stock market for the farmer’s market, she tried her hand at catering and food service, eventually landing an apprenticeship at Hapa Sushi, a well-known Denver restaurant. Three short years later she was promoted to executive sushi chef; at the time she was the only woman in North America to hold that position. With strong experience under her belt, combined with valuable knowledge gleaned from extensive travel through Asia, Nguyen opened Parallel 17, a contemporary Vietnamese restaurant infused with custom recipes from her prolific, self-taught culinary expertise.

Featured on The Food Network and acclaimed nationwide, Chef Mary and Parallel 17 were a hit. Success breeds success, and Nguyen opened the doors to Asian cooking with the debut of Street Kitchen, her Asian travelogue of food featuring dishes spanning Malaysia to China. Located in the Denver Tech Center near the Inverness Hotel, the color-coded menu denotes each dishes’ country of origin. Chef Mary also offers cooking classes at Street Kitchen, a unique activity that is popular among tourists and business travelers wanting a fun teambuilding event. Nguyen explains, “Much like our American greeting of ‘How are you today?’ Asian cultures meet by asking ‘Have you eaten today?’ Street kitchens are everywhere in Asia and especially at lunch time, business people teem into the streets, meet family or friends and eat from these venues, socializing, eating

freshly made food and enjoying themselves. Food ties people together.” Using her fertile knowledge of food choices and preparation techniques from around the globe, Nguyen has created a multitude of original menus. Her philosophy for building a food network is short and sweet: “We cook to make people happy.” Last fall, Nguyen opened Olive & Finch, a deli-style venue boasting a sumptuous menu offering the gamut from pastries to meatloaf sandwiches and quinoa salad. Located just half a block from her popular P17 (more about that in a minute) restaurant near the heart of downtown Denver, Olive & Finch offers a full coffee bar and freshpressed juices. A marketplace of prepared local foods is tucked in the corner, guaranteeing no one goes home hungry. Open dally from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m., Nguyen has seen to it that customers can have their fill of fresh, healthy

--- and delicious – food from one convenient, well-designed locale. Chef Mary’s newest addition to the Denver restaurant scene is the recent incarnation of Parallel 17 from Vietnamese fusion to Euro-American bistro in the truest sense of the word. Now known as P17 (for 17 Plates), the tossed-around term “bistro” has found its proper setting. Providing moderately priced meals, mostly in small plates, with equally cost-efficient wine pairings, P17 has become the place to meet for casual business and pleasure. The Sunday brunch is a popular Denver staple and the house-made cotton candy still brings on the smiles, lemongrass a favorite. As for what tickles Mary’s taste buds most? Fondue. Yup. Cheese fondue shared during a moment of relaxation with her Swiss husband. And, as time-consuming as its preparation may be, she finds great joy in preparing her husband’s favorite indulgence,

raclette, a Swiss dish made of heated cheese, made special by the addition of Mary’s added magic once the melted cheese is removed. Regardless of which Chef Mary Nguyen establishment you visit, you can be confident the food is local, fresh, and, whenever possible, organic. Menus change according to the season and availability of ingredients. Come on, get happy!

T

he Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa at Beaver Creek has an inferiority complex – and it shouldn’t. The dazzling hotel is located in Avon, which once was Vail’s redheaded stepchild. It sits at the base of Beaver Creek Mountain on the glorious rushing creek, but the Westin didn’t want Avon’s former blue-collar brand to smudge its highend luxe-life image. Now Avon has grown up and gussied up. There is no shame in being Avon, especially if you’re the Westin. Condos in the village, although not yet back to pre-recession prices, go for $1 million-plus. Nothing to sneeze at. In Avon itself, the hotel is a short walk to Nottingham Lake, surrounded by 40 acres of open space. Here you can play tennis, fish, get on the

34

D E N V E R H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

water in the paddleboat, picnic or walk around the lake. It’s the site of the annual July 3rd celebration and fireworks display, choreographed to patriotic music and considered the best in Colorado – and the Westin is a prime place to enjoy it. If you want the Beaver Creek experience, a ski lift whisks you from the Westin to the base area for shopping, dining, skating and, of course, skiing. In the summer, it’s about the hiking, outdoor dining, and a trip up the mountain. Vail is a 30-minute shuttle bus away offering all things Vail. And Vail has never looked or felt better, rebuilt, cleaned up and proud of it. In the other direction is Edwards, with its small-town charm and restaurants and shops (and the valley’s best bookstore). It’s a flat and short bike ride away; bikes are available for rent at the hotel. And if you want to use your clubs, Avon is pretty much surrounded by mountain

golf courses. If you haven’t played a round in the hills, do it. It’s so breathtaking you can’t keep your eye on the ball. But life at the Westin is nice enough. With 230 well-appointed rooms, a great restaurant and a world-class pool and spa – I tend to stick around. The studio suites are the basic accommodation – a single room with a patio and the Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed, flat screen TV (yes, there are ondemand movies), a fridge, a twoburner stovetop, a microwave, coffeemaker and a bathroom with shower and tub and piles of towels. The hotel also offers twoand-three-bedroom condos with full kitchens. The pool is a 25-meter salinebased refresher with three infinity hot tubs that look out over the valley and up to Beaver Creek, a bicycle path and the river winding just below them. Next to this oasis is the health club, which offers every machine to plump every pec, plus weights, showers,

steam, sauna, yoga, Spinning, Pilates. The newly remodeled Spa Anjali also frames the pool area. Maya restaurant is run by celebrity chef Richard Sandoval. Mexican food at its best served near a long bar and a shelf of topflight tequilas. The Lift, a small casual dining venue, serves up a nice breakfast and lunch. A huge outdoor patio overlooks the river and the mountain sunsets in the west. This is the site the Maya Summer Patio Concerts that run every Friday through Aug. 29. This is the biggest and wildest Friday Afternoon Club in the Vail Valley – great music, drinks, snacks and people watching. Put this fete on your Westin Bucket List. Ok. So you’re not in Beaver Creek no matter what the signage tells you. But there is nothing second-class about the Westin Riverfront.

F

lawless timing. Failsafe strategy. Herculean endurance. Unflinching fearlessness. In bike racing, these are the hallmarks of winning big. For father and son duo Davis and Taylor Phinney, these methods combine to create the perfect symbiosis. THE FATHER Retired cycling champ Davis Phinney is renowned for his performances as a starring member on the scrappy, winning Seven-11 Cycling Team. A team at the top of the sport in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, Davis Phinney’s team inspired the Kevin Costner film, American Flyers. Davis in particular was cheered for his sprinting ability; in fact one publication hailed him as “brazen” for his ability to leave others in the dust at just the right moment. It was breathtaking to see a mass of spokes, handlebars and helmets, racers gnashing at the heels of their competition, fractions of inches away from disaster should one false move take anyone down. Out of this

38

D E N V E R H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

buzzing hive of chaos comes Davis Phinney, breaking away with a summoned strength that launched him over the finish line time and again. During his pro racing career Davis racked up 328 victories, more wins than any other U.S. cyclist. Highlights of that career include a Pan-Am Games Gold Medal (1983), Olympic Bronze Medal (1984), four National Championship Titles, including the highly coveted US Pro title in 1991. As for this Boulder home boy, it was only fitting he become one of the most successful riders in the history of Boulder’s Coors Classic, taking the overall title in 1988 and stacking up a record 22 stage wins. Joining Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMond, Davis is one of just three U.S. cyclists to win multiple stages of the world’s most prestigious bike race, the Tour de France. To this day, Davis still holds the winning time for Texas’ “Hot as Hell 100”. Closing the book on his professional cycling career, Davis became a sports analyst with NBC and other networks. When

he wasn’t working or traveling, he spent time with his children, Taylor and Kelsey, and his wife, Connie Carpenter-Phinney. Carpenter-Phinney, a champion in her own right, competed in Olympic speed skating and cycling and took Gold in the women’s road race in 1984. THE SON With athletic ability inherited from remarkable parents, it is no wonder Taylor Phinney, at 23 years old, is proving himself among some of the world’s finest bike racers. At 6’6”, Taylor’s weight and the length of his lanky limbs make him a formidable contender, especially in time trials and downhills. Taylor made headlines at age 17, when he took the title of Junior World Time Trial Champion in 2007. In 2009, he won his first World Championship title as well as the under-23 at the ParisRoubaix, among other victories. In 2010, Taylor took first in 10 races from Europe to Utah, and went on to win the National Championship Time Trial (professional).

Taylor Phinney gives it his all at the 2012 London Olympics.

He continued to grow in his knowledge and experience as a pro cyclist, turning heads in 2012 as the third American to don the leader’s jersey, winning the first stage of the Giro D’Italia. At the London Olympics he came within a breath of medaling, garnering a respectable fourth place in both the road race and time trial. In 2013, he won stages in the Tour of Qatar and Tour de Pologne. 2014 was to be Taylor’s breakout year. He took the Tour of Dubai with two stage wins and first place overall. On May 15, his descent at breakneck speed off of San Marcos Pass clinched a Stage 5 win at the Amgen Tour of California. On May 24, Taylor garnered his second National Championship Time Trial title in Chattanooga. Unfortunately, in this article’s formative stage, his chance to take the National title in the road race was cut short after a devastating crash involving a race vehicle in his path during a fast descent down Chattanooga’s Lookout Mountain. According to Davis, the incident is under investigation. Currently, Taylor is

recovering from his knee injury and tib-fib fracture to his left leg. Almost portentous is Taylor’s reflection offered in an earlier interview. “In a perfect world my father would have been my coach. But it didn’t work out that way. I am so proud of him and the way he lives with Parkinson’s. It is never all about him, and it could be. He gives me so much support … I hardly ever think about the future but when I do, it can be scary. Dad teaches me how to deal with that.” THE CHALLENGE Beginning in the late 1990s and unknown to the general public, Davis had spent years feeling “not quite right,” plagued by muscle cramps, endless fatigue, mental blurriness and sudden, numbing weakness. In 2000, after a battery of medical tests, Davis was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s disease. Life had dropped a live grenade at Davis’ feet. Parkinson’s disease sets in when neurons in the brain cease making dopamine, the neurotransmitter of messages from the brain to the body’s

muscles. Without dopamine, the body’s muscles malfunction and die off. Davis’ Young Onset Parkinson’s is rare but not unheard of. Primarily striking after the age of 60, Parkinson’s disease (PD) remains enigmatic as to its cause(s). There is presently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but options are plentiful for staving off this wolf at the door. Admittedly, there was a dark time following the initial diagnosis. The family moved to Italy, partly to adjust to the disease and also because Davis and Connie had a flourishing Bike Camps business there. The family returned to Boulder and by 2008, after eight years spent dealing with the tremors and various symptoms related to PD, Davis was determined to regain the enjoyment and fun from everyday life. His determination shone through in an interview in The New York Times. “I could easily slip into a very, very dark place with everything I’ve lost, so I have to focus on the pinpricks of light to stay positive.” D E N V E R H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

Above: Taylor Phinney tips the scales as he toys with his very first bike. Left: Davis Phinney brings humor and hope to his “tribe” at one of the Foundation’s Victory Summits.

Davis followed those little lights to Beijing to see Taylor compete in his first Olympics. He was able to make the trip largely because of a courageous decision to undergo Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), in which two electrodes were implanted 2.5 inches into either side of his brain. The electrodes are powered by a generator surgically inserted into his chest. Davis explains, “The doctor said, ‘Okay, let’s try a little current now,’ and just like that, all these muscles that had been at war with each other suddenly were at peace. It was like Armistice Day. It was just like Oh…My…God! I looked at my wife and she was crying. Connie said, ’I haven’t seen you smile for a year!’” DBS is not a cure for PD. But it has provided relief from Davis’ most difficult symptoms and enables a better daily quality of life. THE FOUNDATION The Davis Phinney Foundation was established in 2004, its mission to help people living with Parkinson’s to live well today. Simple to say but challenging to 40

D E N V E R H OT E L M A G A Z I N E

accomplish. With the word “cure” at the tip of everyone’s tongues, it has been proven that addressing the symptoms each day, living in the moment with PD and using the blueprint provided by the Davis Phinney Foundation is leading to lives not only lived better, but lived longer. “I think people with Parkinson’s, like any threatening medical condition, think they are alone. They sit passively in their homes and dream of a cure, a way to make it all go away. If I have learned anything, it is that waiting for a cure only makes things worse. At the Foundation we are all about educating and inspiring people with PD to get up every day and do what they can. It sounds cliché, but you have to live in the moment. Passivity is major for immediate decline. That’s not acceptable.” Phinney says. He rises abruptly. “When I am putting on my pants in the morning, I don’t sit on the bed and pull the legs over my feet and stand up. I have to stand up and balance on each leg as I pull

on the other pant leg. You have to have patience in the process and stay focused. One of my worst bike races was when I wanted to be at the finish so badly that I lost my focus on being patient with the strategy and staying in the moment. I did not do well. Every day things come down to that patience. It might take me 10 minutes to wash a glass,” he explains. He holds up his hands, going through the motions of wiping out a glass. “If I try to hurry and lose focus,” he smiles, “all I end up with is a broken glass.” Davis’ enthusiasm for the Foundation and its mission is evident in his emphatic direction to his “tribe”, his affectionate moniker for his PD comrades. “It is so important to be engaged in the universe,” he says, “to bring victories into the here and now. Acknowledge the challenge but not the disability. Don’t live in isolation because life is out here to be lived.” The Davis Phinney Foundation is a wellspring of PD educational materials. They offer free online resources, most exceptionally The

Living Well Challenge webinars, the Every Victory Counts PD selfcare manual and chances to attend the face-to-face symposia series, The Victory Summit. For details on all Foundation activities and resources, visit www. davisphinneyfoundation.org. A support group is crucial to that glass-half-full drive to have a better day. For Davis, his darkest days become showered in light, fueled by his family, and from watching his son, Taylor. “With Taylor, it’s easier. I just look at what he has been doing and I am instantly connected to a magnificent source of energy,” he says. THE FAMILY Davis and Taylor have a mutual respect that is healthy and vibrant. They have even written a book about their special bond, The Happiness of Pursuit. Aside from the inspiration he provides his dad, Taylor also is an integral part of the Foundation, donating $50,000 in the past two years. But as for Taylor’s true hero in his life, he answers without

hesitation, “My mom. She is everything we need to keep it all together.” He laughs. “Is it weird that a 23-year-old man thinks of his mom as his hero?” Although Davis and Connie have been married for more than 25 years, still Davis can hardly find the words. “She makes all of our lives. She knows how everyone is doing and what we are doing. Connie is the architect of our family day.” When asked what makes Davis most proud, he responds without hesitation. “My children.” His bond with his son is obvious, but daughter, Kelsey, is another champion of her dad’s cause and a medal-winning Nordic skier. She attends college in Middlebury, Vt., where she studies neuroscience, surely inspired at least a bit by her father’s life. Davis Phinney becomes quiet after reflecting on his family. Not much gets to him these days, but talking about his devotion to his wife and kids seems to cause a catch in his throat, and he casts a pensive glance my way. He understands it is their devotion

to him that makes this life of his such a joy. It is apparent there is something about this family of athletes that goes far beyond any medal or yellow jersey. The Phinneys are people brimming with love and respect for one another, punctuated by ever-important daily doses of humor. The entire clan holds fast to the winning hallmarks that make for that big win. Flawless timing. Failsafe strategy. Herculean endurance. Unflinching fearlessness.
