Loveland – Where the locals go!

n nearly 30 years of living in Colorado, I’ve managed to ski every resort in this great state. Back when I was single we got up as early as possible to hit first tracks at the variety of amazing resorts Colorado has to offer. Since then, I’ve settled down a bit and have spent a lot of time teaching my kids to ski. My wife and I have triplets and they are now 10 years old, so we know a thing or two about getting up and at em’ with kids, which is a lot different than heading out solo to hit first tracks. We have found Loveland to be a perfect fit for many reasons. We really enjoy the laidback local vibe and authentic ski experience that you can’t find anywhere else. This is very unique in a state that hosts the massive resorts that charge a fortune for a one-day pass, and $20 for a burger. At Loveland, you’ll find affordable ticket, pass and lesson options – close to half of what you would pay at the larger resorts in Summit County, without sacrificing on terrain or snow or customer service. You can also avoid the crowds, lift

lines and much of the traffic since Loveland is the closest ski area to Denver at just 53 miles away. There is also free parking right at the base of both areas and a free shuttle that can bring you back and forth all day long. Loveland is also bigger than you might expect. High atop the Continental Divide, Loveland Ski Area features nine lifts serving 1,800 acres of exceptional terrain. Loveland has two separate base areas and both host rental shops, sport shops, restaurants and bars. Best of all, the area challenges skiers and riders of all levels. When our boys were just two years old, we started skiing with them at Loveland Valley, which is a separate area just for beginners. This unique area is the perfect place for newcomers to work on their technique away from intermediate and expert snow-riders. With their own lifts and gentle terrain, it was there that our kids developed their newfound love of skiing. Our kids graduated from the magic carpet to the ski lift rather quickly and we’ve now moved on to Loveland Basin, which is the main area and offers a wide variety of terrain.

olorado has long been recognized as a national leader in many sectors of commerce, recreation, research, energy, cultural activities, and a large variety of sporting events. There are so many unique places to visit, things to do, venues to explore, and an abundance of opportunity. It is easy to understand why Colorado’s workforce has such an abiding appreciation and spirit for living here, and most would readily admit that working here is a pretty great experience as well. Denver, and Colorado, are not only attractive as top tourist destinations, they have become established as among the best places for business due to the well-educated work population (second in the nation per capita), business-friendly tax climate, popular entrepreneurial/start-up environment, and all with a national and global business community that visibly seeks growth opportunities. Colorado is uniquely positioned in the energy economy with abundant fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, oil) and is becoming a hub for renewable energy resources such as wind, solar, and biofuels, ranking fourth in clean technology, ninth in solar employment, and sixth among natural gas producing states. We now have the nation’s second-largest aerospace economy involving more than 400 companies, not to mention the large joint venture between Boeing and Denver’s longtime rocket-builder, Lockheed Martin. Denver has become the strongest financial center between Chicago and Los Angeles, is a home to a branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, is one of six U.S. Mints, and is commonly referred to as “Wall Street of the West.” The Federal Government remains one

of the state’s largest employers with more than 52,000 employees in more than 250 offices. With regard to real estate, Colorado has made a complete recovery from the recession and Denver is consistently ranked in the top five metropolitan cities in virtually every survey conducted across the country. Denver has averaged between 8 percent and 12.5 percent annual price appreciation each year from 2012 through 2015. With more than 12 percent of Denver’s population between 25 and 30 years of age, it is no surprise that more than 30 percent of all home sales have been to the first-time buyer market. All this while the luxury home market was up more than 20 percent in the number of sales from 2014. Other contributing factors include: Denver ranks Number One for Best City for College Graduates (Apartments.com), Third Healthiest City in the U.S. (American Fitness Index), and Second Best Beer City in the U.S. with more than 10 percent of the nation’s Craft Breweries (nearly 200). Denver is the annual host of the Great American Beer Festival, the largest beer competition in the world. Speaking of festivals, Colorado is home to some of the best and most renown Art Festivals (Cherry Creek sponsors the largest one in the country every July Fourth weekend), food and wine festivals in Aspen, Vail, Crested Butte and many other mountain resorts and communities, and there are also large jazz, bluegrass, and other popular concerts featured throughout Telluride, Vail, Breckenridge, Denver and of course, the coveted concerts held in Red Rocks, arguably the finest outdoor amphitheater in North America. Colorado provides a culture of health and

wellness evidenced by having the nation’s lowest rate of adult obesity, lowest prevalence of diabetes, and is home to one of the fittest populations in the nation. Naturally, all the above information begs the simple question: … Why? Of course Colorado is known for its worldclass ski resorts; in fact we are home to 25 ski and snowboard resorts with 2,500 trails and 325 ski lifts. Colorado resorts have broken recent visitation records, and are already ahead for the 2015-16 season. But Colorado also offers numerous opportunities for hiking, camping, rafting, boating, hunting, kayaking, dude ranch escapes, fishing, rodeos, and biking (Colorado has 18 of the world’s top 100 biking mountain trails), just to mention a few highlights. We have all four major sports teams with year-round games and events, not to mention Major League Soccer and the University of Denver National Lacrosse Champions. And it would be remiss not to remind our readers that Denver has the second-largest Performing Arts Complex in the nation with 10 stages and first-rate productions. Colorado is a great state and the gateway to the Rocky Mountains and the West. Denver is the urban engine and capital of the state. Meet Jewelius LoHi’s affordable fashion boutique by Monica Parpal Stockbridge

un filters in through the front windows at Jewelius, a rustic-chic boutique and jewelry shop near the corner of 32nd Avenue and Zuni Street in Denver’s LoHi neighborhood. Clothing racks are hung with the season’s trending tunics, wool sweaters, and furry vests. Owner Rachel Lubow welcomes customers with a warm smile, while her small puppy, Bambu, looks on from a cushion behind the counter. “I’ve always loved jewelry and clothing,” Lubow says, “especially helping other people choose pieces to fit their style and personality. But I certainly never expected to own my own store!” Her unexpected path began after graduating from college and just before

moving to Colorado in 2008, when Lubow filled in at a three-day trade show in Manhattan. There, she got a sense of the retail world, as well as the challenges of buying accessories. That spurred her idea to create a fashion jewelry distribution company, which eventually compelled her to open her own boutique: Jewelius, named after her grandfather, Julius. “My grandfather had a big influence on my life,” Lubow says, pointing to a photo of the two of them displayed near the front of her store. “He did a lot for the small community in New York where I grew up. Part of my goal is to develop a stronger presence in Denver, to connect with people here.” Indeed, Jewelius aims to connect women

with trendy, fashionable clothing and jewelry to make them feel fabulous—whether they are 25 or 65. Clothing runs the gamut from skinny jeans to sundresses, from cropped bomber jackets to athletic tops and bottoms—all playing to Colorado’s eclectic, regionally influenced style. And, of course, there’s fashion jewelry for every occasion. “Jewelry has a universal appeal,” Lubow says. “It’s something that fits, no matter your shape or size.” Lubow carries affordable designs from around the country, including local Colorado designs and brands like Heather & Hide leather goods and August, Inc. tee shirts. This season, Lubow plans to host popup stores and trunk shows at Jewelius,

highlighting local designers and jewelers to share with the neighborhood community. Tom Mangelsen: Chronicling Earth’s Last Great Wild Places

Nebraska to becoming one of the most prolific and award-winning nature and wildlife photographers of our time, Thomas D. Mangelsen has captured rare moments and vast panoramas during photographic adventures on all seven continents. Mangelsen has traveled the natural world for more than 40 years, observing and photographing Earth’s last great wild places. From polar bears in the Arctic to vast herds of game on the plains of Africa, from the deep jungles of South America to the tigers of India, to images revealing the diversity of wildlife in the American West; Mangelsen’s extensive portfolio includes several million images of wild animals and Earth’s last great wild places, with the finest selections released as limited edition fine art print collections. Mangelsen prints have been acquired by hundreds of thousands of collectors around the world. Tom Mangelsen’s love of nature, his life outdoors and business success were heavily influenced by his father. An avid sportsman, Harold Mangelsen took Tom and his brothers, Bill, David and Hal, to favorite blinds along the Platte River in Nebraska to observe the great flocks of ducks, geese and cranes that migrate through the valley. From these adventures he learned important lessons for photographing in the field, most notably patience and understanding animal behavior. In 1965, Mangelsen began studying business at the University of Nebraska. In 1967, he rom humble beginnings in

transferred to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, where he changed his major and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Mangelsen continued postgraduate study in zoology and wildlife biology at the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University. Initially, Mangelsen was fascinated with photographing birds in flight. In the early 1970s, Tom and his brother David began selling limited edition prints of his images. In 1978, Mangelsen opened his Images of Nature® Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming. Since then, a number of Mangelsen® — Images of Nature Galleries have opened across the United States. As much an artist as he is a conservationist, Mangelsen’s portfolio of natural history photography represents an historic record of what the natural world is and what wild places can still be through a commitment to stewardship. Mangelsen works tirelessly to raise awareness of wild animals and the Earth’s last great wild places. “Jane Goodall is my hero. She constantly reminds me that as alarming as events are in the world, with rising population, development pressure and habitat loss, poaching and climate change taking their toll on wildlife, we owe the younger generation a reason to have hope and our vote of confidence that they can step up and make a difference,” Mangelsen says. “If anything, I hope my pictures matter to them.” Mangelsen is co-founder of The Cougar Fund, a founding Fellow of the International League

iamonds are forever. Glittering, sparkling, incredibly beautiful diamonds are guaranteed to attract attention. For Hong Kong-based property tycoon, Joseph Lau, they are also irresistible. In November 2015, he spent record sums buying two of the rarest diamonds in the world as a gift for his seven-year-old daughter. The 12.03-carat Blue Moon diamond came up for auction in Geneva. The price paid? A record $48.4 million! He promptly renamed it Blue Moon of Josephine after his daughter. It was said to be the most expensive diamond of any kind, as well as the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction. This was not his only purchase. The previous day, he acquired a rare 16.08-carat pink diamond for $28.5 million. This diamond was renamed ‘Sweet Josephine.’ Some years earlier in 2009, Lau purchased a $9.5 million blue diamond and gave it the name ‘Star of Josephine.’ Diamonds are one of the most desirable of all gemstones. The Blue Moon was expected to fetch a high price, but no one

expected just how high the price would go. It is said that the diamond possessed the highest-possible grading – that of a Fancy Vivid Blue. The Gemological Institute of America declared it to be internally flawless, something that is extremely unusual. The Blue Moon was discovered in January 2014 at the Cullinan Mine in South Africa. At that stage it was merely a 29.62-carat rough diamond, yet its incredible quality was obvious. New York-based Cora International purchased the diamond and took six months to cut and polish it to bring out all its glowing, sparkling lustre. The resultant hue was described by the Gemological Institute as being so unique that it is ‘likely to have never before been seen within such a large diamond, or any gemstone.” With such a description of its beauty, with perfect colour and purity, it is no surprise that bidders fought hard to acquire this spectacular diamond leading to this recordbreaking price.

halk up another win for Olympian and X Games competitor Gus Kenworthy, who recently won annual back-to-back championships in the slopestyle competition at the Dew Tour in Breckenridge, Colo. His is a household name among fans of the freestyle skiing circuit, who thrill to the sight of his big air and intense moves, an elite athlete who has been hailed as the top freeskier on the planet. Clearly, Kenworthy’s daring feats are not for the faint of heart, requiring an enormous amount of grit and guts and an undeniable love of action and adventure. Kenworthy grew up in the picturesque ski town of Telluride, Colorado, where he was a fixture in the terrain park, hitting rails and jumps until the lifts closed down. In his early days of competition he earned a reputation for “guineapigging,” meaning he loved to try out novel tricks and jumps before any of his competitors or teammates. He turned pro at 16 years old, when a YouTube video landed him some sponsors. Today Kenworthy is widely regarded as one of the sport’s most well-rounded freestyle skiers, and looks forward to showing his prowess in Slopestyle, SuperPipe and Big Air at the upcoming X Games Aspen. Thus far, he has earned a Bronze at the X Games, but his performance at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where he took Silver, reveals he is determined to compete … and to win big. Winning the Silver represented more than an individual accomplishment for Kenworthy. At the games, he and fellow teammates Joss Christensen and Nick Goepper swept the podium in freestyle skiing, an event that has happened just twice before in Olympic history. Freestyle skiing mania swept the nation upon the athletes’ return, and Kenworthy soon became a favorite on the media circuit, with appearances on Today, The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon and The Late Show With David Letterman. His handsome face graced the covers of magazines such as People and US Weekly, and he and his fellow medalists were pictured on the Kellogg’s Corn Flakes box. Kenworthy has wowed fans across the globe, who watch in awe as he performs jumps and twists from high up in a style that is unique and seemingly impossible. Yet his bravado on the slopes is coupled with a highly endearing side, evidenced by his rescue of five stray dogs, a mother and four puppies, which were abandoned in Sochi. Kenworthy garnered national media attention when he remained in Sochi well after the 2014 Winter Olympics wound down, bringing to light the growing number of stray dogs in that part of the world. A few months ago, Kenworthy once again made headlines when he came out as gay, a courageous move that rocked the world of extreme sports. In an interview with Alyssa Roenigk for ESPN Magazine, the 24-year-old explains why he finally decided to tell the truth about why he wanted fans to know who he is. “I never got to be proud of what I did in Sochi because I felt so horrible about what I didn’t do. I didn’t want to come out as the silver medalist from Sochi. I wanted to come out as the best freeskier in the world.” For Kenworthy, his public announcement represented a breakthrough in an industry that prides itself on image. As he told ESPN, “They say it’s a community of individuals and everyone is doing their own thing and it’s not a team sport, so you get to be yourself. But you don’t, really. Between the contests and the [video] shoots, everyone’s always skiing and training together. Then again, Kenworthy’s willingness to stretch the boundaries of what is “safe” really has never been the obstacle that would prevent him from moving to the next level, whether in his personal life or in a professional capacity. Kenworthy’s rise to the top nearly ground to a halt following last year’s X Games in Aspen. Heralded as the one to watch, his presence was everywhere, on promotional materials and signs surrounding the entire event. Yet he failed to medal in any of his competitions, and even contemplated quitting the sport he so loved. Convinced by his father and agent to get back in the game, Kenworthy placed third in halfpipe at the Mammoth Mountain Grand Prix, and two weeks later won the inaugural ski big air event and the Shaun White Air + Style event at the Rose Bowl. Then in February, competing in an event in Park City, Utah, he made history, debuting a new trick, a double cork 1260. In the end, he performed the first-ever run that included four different double corks, which was lauded as the greatest performance in ski halfpipe history. He finished the season in first place, named by the Association of Freeskiing Professionals(AFP) overall champion for the fifth consecutive year. As the X Games Aspen nears, Kenworthy is determined to continue making history, and to show the world that he is at the top of his game. He comes in as a triple threat in Slopestyle, SuperPipe and Big Air. As the fivetime consecutive AFP overall champion and Silver medalist at the Sochi Olympics, he has been deemed the one to beat. But the X Games are much, much more than just another competition for Kenworthy. Indeed, these games are personal, and carry an intense meaning for Kenworthy that goes well beyond the strive to win. “X Games is the pinnacle event,” he says. “I grew up watching it, wanting to compete there, and winning Gold. A Gold Medal at X Games is still my ultimate goal in skiing. The Olympic Games happen every four years but X Games takes place every year and continues to be the most important event in our sport. It’s my favorite weekend of the season.” A lot of pressure on this 24-year-old superstar. But then again, Gus Kenworthy proves time and again that he is more than up to the challenge.

In 2015 Kadono added X Games Big Air silver, a win at the Los Angeles Air + Style with the first-ever switch backside triple cork 1620 and a win at the Burton U.S. Open with the first ever back-to-back triple cork 1620s. • Tiril Sjåstad Christiansen (Geilo, Norway) — In her rookie year, Christiansen topped the podium at X Games Aspen 2013, claiming gold in Ski Slopestyle and went on to secure silver a few months later at X Games Tignes 2013. Raised in a family full of professional skiers and national champions, Christiansen won silver medals at both the Junior World Championships and Youth Olympic Games in 2012. Most recently, she won gold in the Silvaplana Freeski World Cup. • Arielle Gold (Breckenridge, Colorado) — A two-time X Games bronze medalist, Gold has finished in the top four at each X Games event in which she has competed. Both she and older brother Taylor earned the chance to compete at the Sochi Olympics, with Arielle being the youngest member of the halfpipe team. For Denverites, the city of Boulder presents a scenic, accessible getaway destination just about any time of year. Nestled at the base of the Flatirons, this mellow college town is only 40 miles away and can offer a nice break from the bustle of the city. Even the views along Highway 36 can be rejuvenating, especially if the skies—and the traffic— are clear. As soon as you arrive you’ll slip seamlessly into the slower pace of this Front Range community. You might check out artisan shops and hip restaurants along Pearl Street; hike the trail up Mount Sanitas on the western edge of town; taste a beer flight from one of the many craft breweries; and, if you stay the night, recuperate in a place where nature and hospitality come together: a place like St Julien Hotel & Spa. As the story goes, back when Boulder was a burgeoning gold mining supply town in the late 1890s, a tiny guest house named the Hotel St Julien operated near the present-day Boulder Theater on what is now 14th Street. Both originally from France and both dedicated to the guest experience, Mechin and Antoine made a plan to improve the comfort, consistency, and quality at Jill’s Restaurant. During the past several years, they’ve rearranged the dining room to accommodate a more comfortable, intimate setting; updated the linens and glassware; and even transformed the stuffy booth seating into semi-private dining nooks nestled between tall partitions— ideal for small parties who desire a more personal experience. Naturally, they are especially proud of Jill’s culinary advances. “I like to say that we serve contemporary American cuisine with a ‘French accent,’” Antoine says, his words embellished with his own French lilt. Both Mechin and Philippe make a point of translating their cultural background in a way that is refined and approachable. For instance, the menu offers French Onion Soup, but also gourmet tater tots; Escargots as well as grilled Fish Tacos. For dinner, the signature Natural Chicken Breast with Lyonnaise tarragon jus echoes Mechin’s French upbringing, while the Duet of Boulder Raised Lamb with lambrack, braised shank, basil whipped potato, and Roquefort bleu cheese sauce presents a delectable marriage of both worlds. Especially impressive is the unique tableside dining experience at Jill’s. Order items like Steak Diane, Caesar Salad, Shrimp Scampi, and Bananas Foster, and your chef—Mechin himself, if you’re lucky—will wheel a cart through the dining room, coming to a stop just beside your table, and begin to cook your dish right before your eyes. A flame puffs to life from a gas burner on the cart, and the chef begins to stir ingredients into the pan; butter, garlic, leeks—all the while happy to converse about the food, wine pairings, even the adventures you may have had earlier in the day. Then, a flick of the skillet, a splash of Cognac, a thrilling burst of orange flames, and your dish is before you, piping hot and perfectly delicious. “I think the time has come when French food is more accepted,” Mechin adds. “The assumption is often that French food can be expensive and too formal. While we want our training and our culture to shine through, we also want to make our restaurant approachable, both in terms of menu items and price. We may have four stars, but we make sure that Jill’s isn’t out of reach.” Case in point? Jill’s serves lunch all week, both an à la carte menu of sandwiches, salads, and wood-fired pizzas, as well as the Ooh Là Là Lunch buffet—a rotating French feast of flatbreads, daily pasta, and tartines at an impossibly affordable $12.95 per person. Vegan Friday lunches feature an ever-changing array of fresh vegan dishes, “by far our busiest lunch of the week,” Mechin says.

On Sundays, Jill’s Restaurant transforms into an abundant, elegant brunch buffet serving heaps of Alaskan King Crab legs, freshly carved roasts, Belgian waffles, and decadent dessert displays of bread pudding, pastries, and even a chocolate fountain. Everyone is welcome, from casual students in flip flops, to families celebrating special occasions, to locals visiting for an elegant meal in the late morning light. During the holidays, brunch becomes even more of an event. Themed décor, seasonal specials, and plenty of panache have encouraged new traditions for many guests, several of whom will finish their meals only to immediately make reservations for next year. Of course, each menu changes with the seasons, and always features three to five specials dreamed up by Mechin and his staff. “I have a talented team in the kitchen, and I love to leave room for fresh ideas depending on what we find at the Boulder Farmers’ Market.” Some ingredients are even harvested from the St Julien garden, like tomatoes, potatoes, and fresh herbs. “The garden is quite wild,” Mechin laughs, referencing the small plot at the corner of Ninth Street and Canyon Boulevard. “We don’t use pesticide or herbicide, so we allow nature to take over.” Mechin also prepares all the sauces and stocks from scratch; smokes salmon in-house; forages for porcini mushrooms in Boulder Canyon; and sources local meats whenever possible. In keeping with the hotel’s environmental priorities, no live animal butchery occurs on-site. Yet, in a community where the wildlife and the environment are priorities, many appreciate this dedication to humane animal treatment. “We source our proteins based on the values of the hotel ownership,” Mechin says. “It’s made us better chefs, and it’s part of who we are.” Indeed, St Julien’s vision is dedicated to service, hospitality, and environmental awareness—values that empower Jill’s Restaurant to keep striving for excellence. “Our goal is to continually develop new offerings, fine-tune service, and showcase the extraordinary talents of Chef Laurent Mechin and Philippe Antoine,” Bruce Porcelli affirms. the south. Even with that much glass, there is nary a noise from outside. “The windows are triple-paned, allowing for no noise disturbance,” says Laurie Meza, a spokeswoman for the hotel. The thick windows make the guest rooms quiet enough for a baby to sleep. The Leed-certified 14-story hotel and conference center opened November 19 and is like an oasis on the plains at the fifth busiest airport in the country and the 15th busiest in the world, with 53 million passengers passing through each year. Business travelers will love the conference center that features a three-story floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall that provides calming views of the sweeping landscape in the spacious pre-function area. Two ballrooms, 15 meeting rooms with various dimensions and 19 break-out rooms complete the 37,000 square-foot facility that can hold as many as 2,500 people. There’s a buzz going around about the brand new Westin at Denver International Airport (DIA). Dining Three dining options are offered at the Westin: Grill and Vine, Ingredients and Sky Lounge. Grill & Vine is a tavern-style contemporary restaurant with American cuisine offering breakfast and all-day menus. “Complementing Westin’s core brand values, our menu supports wellness with simple, light, fresh foods while also focusing on locally sourced items,” said Jeremy Sullivan, director of food and beverage outlets. “Choose from our SuperFoods favorites or ‘simply grilled’ items. While the food plays a starring role, there is also a wide selection of fresh, handcrafted cocktails and a considerable wine program featuring 16 wines by the glass, including organic selections, that can be enjoyed at the large and inviting bar,” he said. At the casual grab-andgo eatery called Ingredients, customers choose from a variety of healthy breakfast and lunch items to be made to order for eating on the go. And at the Sky Lounge in the hotel lobby, customers can enjoy small plates and quick bites with a cocktail, glass of wine or a beer. Transit Center Getting to downtown Denver from DIA (or DEN as the new logo now says) will be a breeze when the east rail line of Denver’s light rail system begins operating from the Denver Airport Station just outside the hotel’s entrance next spring. It will take only 35 minutes to travel to historic Union Station, the beautiful newly remodeled transit hub in the heart of downtown about 25 miles west. From there, guests can reach the city’s culinary scene, sports arenas, art galleries and shops on foot, bike, pedicab or via the light rail or 16th Street Mall shuttle. The stainless-steel electric rail cars on the east line are bigger and heavier than those on the rest of the system, running on 25,000-volt AC power instead of 750-volt DC power. The commuter train will travel at 79 miles per hour, versus the lighter cars’ speed of 55 mph. Its higher platforms flush with the train make it easy for passengers wheeling luggage and for those in wheelchairs and walkers to get through the doors. The east line will make six stops during its 23-mile trip to Union Station. It will leave every 15 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes the rest of the time.

Perhaps the most convenient aspect of the new transit center is the ability for passengers to tag their luggage at a kiosk right there and drop it off for security screening and transport to their plane. Passengers can go directly to their gates without having to stop at the ticket lobby to check their bags. Public Plaza A gorgeous open-air public plaza the size of a football field and two basketball courts connecting the hotel with the terminal adds a dimension to the airport hotel not seen anywhere in the United States. The 82,000 square-foot space partially covered with a stunning glass-and-steel canopy that invokes Star Wars is Denver’s latest venue for art and exhibitions, entertainment, markets and shows of all kinds. It can accommodate as many as 2,000 people meandering about and as many as 4,500 for special events. The ease of getting there via the train is expected to draw visitors from around the metro area for events managed by Denver Arts & Venues. Public Art Thanks to Denver’s Public Art Program established in 1988, one percent of any capital improvement project more than $1 million must be set aside for art. Since its opening, DIA has maintained an active public art program; accordingly, the Westin and Transit Center displays artwork symbolic of Colorado’s landscape from mostly local artists selected through a competitive process. Exterior installations include “Shadow Array,” an artful display of 250 beetle-kill spruce logs (the pine beetle has devastated forests throughout Colorado) above native grasses on the sides of the train platform by Denver artist Patrick Marold; “Air Field,” a wind-activated installation by California

Having started out with the band called Phish, Mike Gordon put together this band, self titled “Mike Gordon,” with a genius rock sound using guitar, bass, banjo, and piano.

Turntablist JR Flo, keyboardist David Matisse, and drummer Adam Tune formed the electronic band Keys N Krates in Toronto, Ontario. The trio took shape in 2008 and sought to combine their wide range of inspirations, from early house music to a strain of southern U.S. rap production that got them tagged as a trap act. Putting their own club spin on the latter with booming bass, double- and-triple-time hi-hats, thick synthesizer lines, and samples, they released an EP on YYZ in 2012 and then issued a series of singles and EPs for Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label.
