Welcome Letter
October 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is our great joy to welcome you to the 2018 Dallas Ministry Conference! As Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas and President of the University of Dallas, we are grateful that you have taken time aside from your normal work, family, and ministry commitments to join us for three days of Walking Together In Faith. This event promises to be a faith-filled and formative experience, and your participation will surely affect your own faith journey as well as those you encounter. As you are well aware, there are many challenges in the world today. It is our great hope that together we can help the people we serve to better understand their faith and grow in spirituality. In turn, that will help them find answers to the controversial issues and questions we currently face. While you attend the sessions, we invite you to come together in prayer, visit the exhibit hall, and enjoy the prayer canopy and music over this weekend, we pray that your mind and heart will be opened to God’s call in your life and that you will leave this conference empowered and rejuvenated. Thank you for your presence, your faithful participation, and your willingness to generously share what you learn at this conference with your Catholic communities at home. May God our heavenly Father bless each of you, and may the knowledge, prayer and fellowship at this conference renew your spirit and your dedicated ministry in the Church! Sincerely in Christ,
Most Rev. Edward J. Burns Dr. John G. Plotts Bishop Interim President Diocese of Dallas University of Dallas

ONE ACT PLAY PRESENTED BY GENESIAN MINISTRIES Join Genesian Ministries in Grand Ballroom 6 on Saturday from 3 - 4 pm (Period 14) for their One Act Play, entitled “The First Moments of Man: A Comedy.” This 45 minute play seeks to answer the question: What was life like in the Garden of Eden during Adam and Eve’s first hour alive? How did they learn about themselves and the world around them? Join us for a laugh riot filled with bumbling antics, audience participation, and a wise message about the nature of relationships and true love. Pairs well with an introductory discussion on Theology of the Body.
RETREAT INTO CONFERENCE: “FURTHER UP AND FURTHER IN” Join Vince Lujan during Period 02 (2:45 pm) or Period 03 (4:15 pm) on Thursday afternoon in MR 2 for a mini-retreat experience that will encourage participants to tap into their own storehouses of grace during the sometimes stressful surroundings and goings on of conference life. By welcoming all with prayer, song and brief anecdotes and utilizing the gift of silence, our hope is that you will be ministered to and sent forth to multiply your gifts that will feed the multitudes.

Strengthening Our Faith in the Busyness — Becky Eldredge
Is the rapid pace of life combined with your growing number of responsibilities leaving little time for you to strengthen your own faith let alone help others in our communities strengthen their faith lives? As a wife, mother, and minister, Becky Eldredge understands the challenges of juggling many roles in the busyness of life. Drawing on two decades of accompanying people on their faith journeys, Becky shares the value of strengthening our faith in the middle of our lives through a personal encounter with Jesus Christ every day. This daily encounter with Christ becomes our fuel for mission to strengthen the faith of those around us as we discern the unique way God is calling us to build the Kingdom. Improving RCIA in 3 Steps — Kim Brown
In just 11 months, the RCIA program that Kim Brown led went from the average of 20-30 candidates and catechumens per year to over 100. As Director of Adult Formation, Kim developed a dynamic RCIA program that attracted and engaged a greater number of candidates and catechumens when compared to previously used models. This session is designed to give RCIA Directors & RCIA Team members a three step process that will allow for immediate implementation in their RCIA programs. Gone is the “one size fits all” model! This customized program meets each individual candidate and catechumen walking with them on their personal faith journey. The first 10 attendees to this session will receive a FREE copy of “Spiritual Lessons along the Camino” by Kim Brown as featured on EWTN Radio.
Reviving Communities of Faith with Stories of Grace — Leonard J. DeLorenzo, Ph.D.
Being around other people is not the same as thing as “community.” In fact, as one popular scholar has put it, most of modern lives are really more about being “alone together.” In this session, we will learn how the practice of sharing stories of grace fosters real community around Jesus Christ. Even more, we will learn how to help others craft these faith stories. This is essential for parish communities, school communities, and even families. Stories of grace prepare us better for eucharistic fellowship with the Lord who feeds us with his presence, and as Dorothy Day once memorably said, “We know Him in the breaking of bread, and we know each other in the breaking of bread, and we are not alone anymore.”

Walking Together in Faith — Katie Prejean McGrady
No one likes to be put on a leash, dragged along, forced to do or believe something. Instead, we want to journey WITH the other, walking alongside companions as we come to know Christ personally and grow in relationship with Him. How do we do this in our parish communities, especially with youth and young adults? How do we walk with someone as they seek to encounter Jesus Christ, and introduce them to a life of prayer, the beauty of Scripture, the gift of the Sacraments, and the joy of service? “Walking Together in Faith” will unpack and explore practical ways to accompany, journey with, and intentionally disciple others as they look to meet Jesus. The Freedom to Build Bridges through the Gift of the Evangelical Counsels — Sister Josephine Garrett, CSFN
Building bridges requires risk and sacrifice. Literally, it is a process of making a path over a place that was previously not passable. It requires balance. The balance between self-possession and openness to another. To lose self, but properly, for the sake of the Kingdom. The gift of the evangelical counsels (the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience) have the grace within them to make this process possible. And the virtues they contain, can be manifested in the lives of the entire people of God, to become active participants in the mission of Jesus Christ to gather all creation into one family. In this session I hope to share how my experience, my relationship with God as a religious Sister, has opened my eyes and set me free to risk building bridges in ways I never thought possible, and given me brief glimpses along the way into the hope and dream that God has for the world.

“Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions: The Summary Report of the USCCB Task Force on Catholic Social Teaching and Catholic Education (1995), the United States Bishops recognized that, “in some educational programs, Catholic social teaching is not really shared or not sufficiently integral and explicit. As a result, far too many Catholics are not familiar with the basic content of Catholic social teaching. More fundamentally, many Catholics do not adequately understand that the social teaching of the Church is an essential part of Catholic faith.” The USCCB, therefore, issued a “call to action, an appeal especially to pastors, educators, and catechists to teach the Catholic social tradition in its fullness.” How do we as teachers and administrators in Catholic schools and Catholic formation programs ensure that we have the knowledge, strategies, and resources necessary to share Catholic social teaching with our students at all grades levels and across all content areas? This session will address the characteristics of effective professional development and offer insight into the challenges associated with making sure that our Catholic teachers can successfully answer this call.”

Our diverse, universal Church is a living message for our society. How has it been possible for us, under the action of the Holy Spirit, to hold together as one, while reaching worldwide? Pope Benedict wrote of the Church’s “3 strong pillars”: Word, Sacrament and Caritas (love that focus on “the other”). In this workshop we’ll explore the significance of the Church’s “3 strong pillars”, how each of the 3 is necessary for the other 2 to be fully realized, and how all our ministries can raise up the significance of these 3 pillars for an amazing experience of Church as the Body of Christ and a vibrant witness to society. Building Bridges: How Catholic Schools Serve Immigrant Populations — Barbara Khirallah, M.Ed. & Carmen Newstreet
Economic empowerment and well-being is linked inextricably to education. Catholic schools enjoy astonishing success working with immigrant children, improving not only test scores and graduation rates but also economic prospects and social integration. Catholic education builds bridges for new immigrants and their native-born counterparts. Post1960s immigrants are similar to and different from their predecessors. Immigrant students enrolled in Catholic schools come predominantly from Asia, the Caribbean, and South America, rather than Europe, and are more diverse in ethnicity, language, race, religion, and social class. Immigrant parents share the drive and willingness to uproot themselves in search of a better life and access to greater educational opportunity for their children, while on the road to heaven. Stand Your Ground: Learning to be Assertive — Marti R. Jewell
MR 6
June 2017, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops voted to ratify a revision of the Guidelines for the Celebration of the Sacraments with Persons with Disabilities, originally released in 1995. These updated guidelines emphasize the importance of including persons with disabilities fully into the sacramental life of the parish. Participants will learn how to effectively use these Guidelines in diverse scenarios to help persons with disabilities to receive the Sacraments and to promote their meaningful participation within their faith community. The need to stand up for ourselves, find our voice, and take a firm stance in serving our parish communities is critical. Assertive people are authentic, voicing their truth, while not hurting or disrespecting someone else in the process. They can speak up for victims or challenge inappropriate behavior in ways that are neither aggressive not passive. Anyone in parish ministry knows there are all kinds of people and all kinds of challenges. We must find a way to stand firm and be present to all. This workshop will discuss what an assertive person looks like and offer several tips in how to be assertive whether speaking your truth, voicing your opinion, encouraging someone, or facing opposition. .

Catholic Leadership: Dramatic, Nontraditional, and Unexpected — Linda Khirallah Porter, MTS
Broken families. Corrupt governments. Impoverished nations. Acts of terror. These are just the symptoms of a much deeper issue. Our world is in desperate need of good leaders. Every great movement begins with a great leader. Lead Like Jesus” has become a popular terminology for Christian leaders. Often it focuses on servant leadership. It’s a great Bible teaching, but for some pastors and leaders it fails them because they lack the joy, wisdom, and power that are needed to sustain effective spiritual leadership. To lead like Jesus we need to lead with Jesus. Intimacy with Christ is the tap root of fruitful ministry and leadership. In this workshop we will revisit your leadership style, and introduce some new ways to become more successful and self-aware.

Lord Today, may I respond to you in quiet prayers and loud actions — Deacon Art Miller
The inner chatter of our busyness is quieted by a satisfied soul. The door of faith is always open. So those who usher His children in to experience the glory of God should never guard the door against intruders but to act as greeters showing the open door to His elect not our own. We rae to remove the locks that shut away churchless and broken children, we are to unlock and open wide the doors so that the faithful and faithless can walk in and we can walk out, walking out to proclaim that everyone is welcome to enter that open door. MAN UP - Building Bridges to Form Effective Men’s Fellowship — Greg Wasinski
MR 1
The landscape of the traditional men’s group in the parish has changed. We are faced with the challenge to meet the needs of those who have been involved in the church for many years while building a ministry that captures the attention of younger men struggling to navigate their way through life in the many roles they play. There is hope found through bridging the gap of tradition and the experiential desires of this generation. Together we will discuss how we can implement effective methods into our own men’s groups that reach the four components necessary to have a well rounded men’s ministry: Social – Service – Scriptural – Sacramental.

Evangelizing children today is not just the job of the catechist or the parish. It is a collaborative effort among parish leaders, catechists, parents and extended friends and family. Some of our tried and true methods of catechizing children need to be updated to fit our version 8.0 reality. What does an evangelized and catechized child look like? And more importantly, how do we get there? Our society is in desperate need of recapturing the genius of men. Society is better when fathers are present emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Too often, we set men up to fail and wonder why they aren’t present at Mass or in our programs. Scott is going to reflect on what we can do in ministry to reach out to men and build them up!

Hope, Hospitality, and Happiness: 3 Essential Elements of the New Evangelization — Kathy Hendricks

Part of the call to the new evangelization is meeting the challenges to faith in our time. Let’s look at all three and ways to incorporate them into our catechetical, pastoral, and everyday efforts at being agents of evangelization. Sponsored by Sadlier

Engaging Young People in God Talk! (Part 1) — Robert McCarty, D.Min.
According to the research, a factor leading to disaffiliation in young people is the lack of opportunity to talk about faith issues! This two part session will provide participants with practical skills on how to use symbols, analogy, and metaphors in engaging young people in God talk. These skills are applicable to home, classes, youth ministry settings, and in our conversations. Further, this session will identify spiritual practices, faith skills, and rituals that enable young people to ‘talk’ about God and faith and to live out their discipleship. Participants will also consider the importance of creating space for deep conversations for young people so that questions and doubts can be verbalized. Let’s talk about young people and about God! Twelve Steps and the Sacraments: A Catholic Approach to Recovery — Scott Weeman
Addiction and unhealthy attachments have taken a firm hold of our culture, and Catholics are not immune from the dangers they bring. Many in the Church are unsure of where to turn for help regarding families and individuals. It is time for the Catholic Church to establish itself as a field hospital where healing takes place through accompaniment, fellowship, and sacramental recovery. Scott will share his own story of conversation and the journey of others whom have made their way back to the Church through Catholic in Recovery as well as those that have found new life in the twelve steps and the sacraments. Sponsored by Ave Maria Press
Building a Firm Foundation: Evangelizing Parents Whose Children are Preparing for First Sacraments — Marylynn Wesson
Research and evidence clearly indicates that parents are increasingly ill-equipped to take on this role as they have typically been sacramentalized but are not evangelized or sufficiently catechized, prerequisites to becoming the first preachers of the faith to their children. Besieged by daily trials, distractions and threats to their faith, evangelized parents are more receptive to the necessary food of full Gospel catechesis that will nourish and deepen their faith, bringing them to a greater awareness of the holiness and sacredness of their family, the “Domestic Church.” The objective of evangelizing parents is to create a desire to grow together in faith in an intentional way with their children in their role as first educators as they help their children prepare for the reception of their sacraments. This presentation will explore an 8 week parent evangelization program for parents of children preparing for baptism, reconciliation, Eucharist and/or confirmation, awakening - or re-awakening - them to the importance of a relationship with Jesus and the Church.

Besides his assigned parish, he is the Chaplin at Hartford’s Capital Community College and Adjunct faculty for Holy Family Retreat Center in West Hartford and Our Lady of Calvary Retreat Center in Farmington, CT. Deacon Miller was arrested and jailed during the summer of 1963 as he sat in silent protest over the sustained use of racial bigotry to separate black Americans from the imbued rights of all Americans. Continuing the struggle for those oppressed he was arrested in October of 2015 in protest against the same racial injustices that continue to sully the dignity of America. A nationally known preacher of God’s Holy Scripture, he has traveled throughout the country raising the need of conversion to “Radical Love”. The kind of self-denying love that can only be accomplished through the grace and power offered to us through Jesus Christ. Deacon Miller has preached throughout the United States, from New England to the Katrina ravaged gulf coast of Mississippi, from the Rocky Mountains of northern New Mexico and Colorado, and the broad plains of Kansas, to the south side of Chicago, and the borough of Brooklyn in New York, he teaches and preaches Christ’s call to His life changing “Radical Love”. At public forums, houses of worship, schools and universities across the country, Deacon Miller addresses issues of social injustice. With firsthand knowledge he speaks to his audiences from the perspective of an African American who grew up on the South Side of Chicago in the 1940s and 1950s. Deacon Miller was 10 years old in 1955 when his schoolmate Emmett Till, age 14, was brutally murdered in Mississippi for allegedly whistling at a white woman—an incident that energized the nascent Civil Rights Movement. His recently released book “The Journey to Chatham”, details the historic events seen through the eyes of Emmett’s friends. Deacon Miller is a certified trainer in Dr. King’s nonviolence philosophy as well as a Certified Spiritual Director and is a board member for Connecticut Center for Nonviolence. To this day he continues to addresses 21st-century examples of the societal tendency to embrace violence. Echoing the thoughts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he believes that as part of the great human experience, no one can sit idly tolerant of the great injustices that happen anywhere in the world. “If God were to give us an 11th commandment,” Deacon Miller proposes, “I believe it would read: Thou shall not be a bystander.”
