Curated by Dr. Arteaga in his previous role as Director of the Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) in Mexico City, the exhibition debuted at the Réunion des museés nationaux (RMN)-Grand Palais in Paris to widespread critical acclaim. The DMA partnered with MUNAL and the Secretaría de Cultura/Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico to bring this exhibition to Dallas for its only US presentation. Including over 180 pieces from 61 lenders, the exhibition comprised extraordinary works of Mexican art by Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and others, along with lesser-known but equally striking masterpieces that revealed the great diversity of artistic expression in Mexico during this period. The exhibition also highlighted women artists of the period, most notably Frida Kahlo, and included Kahlo’s world-famous dual portrait, Las Dos Fridas, which is rarely shown outside of Mexico. The exhibition was presented in both English and Spanish, including bilingual in-gallery text, a bilingual family guide, and an audio tour offered in both

multicultural ambassadors for the Museum, spreading information about the exhibition in local communities, as well as greeting and assisting visitors on-site. The exhibition’s success was further bolstered by innovative programming, including an exhibition-themed Late Night, a film series screening classics of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, and multiple presentations by scholars in the field. And, on July 6, Frida Fest celebrated Frida Kahlo’s 110th birthday with an attempt to set the Guinness World Record for most people dressed as Frida Kahlo in a single location (the attempt is currently under review by the GWR). More than 1,000 visitors participated in setting the record, and 5,856 people attended the event. México 1900–1950 was supported by a remarkable and highly successful fundraising effort. The DMA’s Development team raised over $1.6 million in contributions to the exhibition, including a significant amount from first-time donors to the DMA. The Latino Center for Leadership Development and Patrón Tequila were two of the lead sponsors for the exhibition and, in a new initiative, eleven donors sponsored twelve DMA Family Days, which provided free admission to the exhibition on Sundays throughout the spring and summer. Almost 40,000 people attended the exhibition

on Family Days, and half of them were first-time visitors to the Museum. In addition, fundraising for the exhibition included the DMA’s first crowdfunding campaign, which exceeded expectations and offered DMA supporters throughout the community a chance to be part of this exciting project. Ultimately, the exhibition built excitement and support for the DMA throughout Dallas, drew record-breaking audiences, and received extensive media coverage and critical acclaim. Closing in mid-July, it capped fiscal year 2017 with a great success and a bright vision for the DMA’s future. In addition to México 1900–1950, another highlight of the year was Art and Nature in the Middle Ages. Opening in December 2016, the exhibition featured exquisite works of medieval art from the collection of the Musée de Cluny, Musée National du Moyen Âge in Paris. With objects from the 12th through the 16th centuries, the exhibition explored the central role of nature as both inspiration and iconography in medieval art in a variety of media—including stained glass, metalwork, ceramics, tapestries, and illuminated manuscripts—and throughout evolving artistic styles and modes of representation. Shaken, Stirred, Styled: The Art of the Cocktail, organized by the DMA, opened to the public in November 2016 for a yearlong installation. This focused exhibition draws on the DMA’s strong collection of decorative arts to illustrate the history of the cocktail in the United States from the late 19th century to the present, and to demonstrate the shifting styles that influenced the design of cocktail wares and accoutrements. Two exciting touring exhibitions entertained DMA visitors throughout the summer. Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion, organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Groninger Museum, the Netherlands, presented the groundbreaking work of Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen. To create her boldly original designs, van Herpen combines traditional handwork with unexpected materials and technological innovations, including 3-D printing. Visions of America: Three Centuries of American Prints from the National Gallery of Art surveyed printed works representing America and its people from 1710 to 2010. With over 150 works from the collection of the National Gallery of Art, the exhibition shed light on key historical moments and social developments in the history of the United States, while also tracing the evolution of diverse artistic styles and printmaking techniques.

Acquisitions The exhibitions mentioned were just a sampling of the many activities at the DMA in FY17. Preserving and building our collection remains at the core of the Museum’s mission, and this year we added to our collection in nearly every area. The Arts of the Americas received, among other important gifts, a Western Mono large-shouldered basket made by Clara Huhly Harris, the purchase of which was funded by the Otis and Velma Davis Dozier Fund and Bybee Native American Art Fund. The Arts of Asia were enriched by a limestone tomb plaque marker on a tortoise base funded by the Cecil and Ida Green Acquisition Fund, among many other beautiful masterpieces. A number of important objects augmented the Arts of Africa, including a generous gift of textiles from Joanne B. Eicher. The European art collection received two works of sandblasted opaque flashed glass with pressed wood frames by Josef Albers from the Foundation for the Arts Collection as a bequest of James Howard Clark, Jr. A beautiful oil on canvas by Charles François Daubigny, The Painter’s Barge at the Ile de Vaux on the Oise River, was acquired thanks to the Irene H. and Ernest G. Wadel Acquisition Fund. Untitled (Sahara) by Kevin Beasley entered the contemporary art collection, along with Purple Diagonal by Joan Semmel. We are also excited to note that an important early work by Jackson Pollock, Figure Kneeling Before Arch with Skulls, was acquired for the Museum. These three works entered the collection thanks to the TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art Fund. Fundraising and Support for Key Museum Initiatives A number of significant supporters helped the Museum achieve important initiatives this year. With the continued support of Kosmos Energy, a new permanent gallery space for the Keir Collection of Islamic Art opened to the public on April 18, 2017. Currently on long-term loan to the DMA, the Keir Collection of nearly 2,000 objects is among the most important and comprehensive collections of Islamic art in the world. The DMA and Kosmos Energy share the goal of fostering cross-cultural understanding through the display and interpretation of these beautiful objects. This year the DMA completed the digitization of its collection, a major undertaking that began in 2014 and was made possible by a grant from the O’Donnell Foundation. Thanks to the O’Donnell Foundation grant and the Museum’s dedicated digitization team, images of the entire DMA collection—nearly 24,000 objects—are now searchable through the online collection at DMA.org, greatly increasing accessibility to the Museum’s vast resources for education and discovery. In August 2016 the Museum launched the new DMA app, now available free on iOS and Android devices. The application was created in collaboration with Pariveda Solutions’ Summer Internship Program. Five Pariveda interns worked closely with DMA staff throughout the research and discovery phase and the development process. The resulting application offers DMA visitors easy access to information on current exhibitions, audio tours and content, self-guided tours, event calendars, Museum maps and

Highlights of the season included Pulitzer Prize–winning author Paul Watson, Chelsea Clinton, and David Sedaris. And the Museum continues to work with community partners such as KERA, SOLUNA, the Dallas Opera, and the Fine Arts Chamber Players to offer a variety of programs, including musical performances and conversations on art and culture in Dallas. 8

______________________________________________ The success of the outstanding initiatives at the Dallas Museum of Art this fiscal year was reflected in record attendance and increased audience engagement. Overall attendance in FY17 was the highest recorded since the Museum’s return to free general admission. As this statistic suggests, the Museum has expanded its reach within the Dallas community and beyond in nearly every facet of its activities. We extend our sincere and profound thanks to our Board of Trustees, the Museum staff, the City of Dallas, all of our visitors, and, of course, our many members, volunteers, and supporters for the extraordinary year behind us, and we look forward to the very bright future ahead. Spirit and Matter: Masterpieces from the Keir Collection of Islamic Art September 18, 2015–July 31, 2016 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. The exhibition was presented by Kosmos Energy. The curator for the exhibition was Sabiha al Khemir, former Senior Advisor for Islamic Art, and the exhibition included 64 objects on long-term loan from the Keir Collection of Islamic Art. Exhibition attendance was 104,299.

Vermeer Suite: Music in 17th-Century Dutch Painting January 17–August 21, 2016 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art with paintings on loan from The Leiden Collection. The curator for the exhibition was Olivier Meslay, former Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs, and the exhibition included eight paintings from the Leiden Collection. Exhibition attendance was 101,414.

Visions of Antiquity in the 18th Century March 18–October 23, 2016 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. The curator for the exhibition was Franny Brock, McDermott Intern for European Art, 2015–2016. The exhibition included 19 objects from the DMA’s collection.

Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty April 17–August 14, 2016 The exhibition was organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum with generous support from ART MENTOR FOUNDATION LUCERNE, Sakurako and William Fisher, The William R. Kenan Jr. Endowment Fund, The Lauder Foundation – Leonard and Judy Lauder Fund, Edward Lenkin and Roselin Atzwanger, The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Margery and Edgar Masinter, The Margery and Edgar Masinter Exhibitions Fund, the James F. Petersen Charitable Fund in honor of Tania and Tom Evans, The Bernie Stadiem Endowment Fund, and the Trellis Fund. The C.F. The exhibition was curated by Gabriel Ritter, former Nancy and Tim Hanley Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art; Nolan Jimbo, McDermott Intern for Contemporary Art, 2015–2016; and Gavin Delahunty, Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. The exhibition consisted of a site-specific mural painted in the DMA Concourse and one loan, an additional work by Nicolas Party.

The curator for the exhibition was Anne R. Bromberg, The Cecil and Ida Green Curator of Ancient and Asian Art. The exhibition included 81 objects from the Brooklyn Museum, along with one object from the DMA’s permanent collection and one local loan. Exhibition attendance was 32,622.

Walter de Maria: Counterpoint October 19, 2016–January 22, 2017 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. The presentation was made possible by the Contemporary Art Initiative. The curator for the exhibition was Gavin Delahunty, former Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. The exhibition included Walter de Maria’s 1986 work Large Rod Series: Circle/Rectangle, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, a joint acquisition by the DMA and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and St. Francis Kneeling in Meditation by El Greco, a loan from the Meadows Museum, Dallas. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue published by the Dallas Museum of Art.

Nina Canell: Mid-Sentence October 19, 2016–January 15, 2017 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. The curator for the exhibition was Gavin Delahunty, former Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. The exhibition featured a new acquisition, Nina Canell’s room-sized installation Mid-Sentence.

Daumier’s Political and Social Satire October 29, 2016–April 23, 2017 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. The curator for the exhibition was Martha MacLeod, Senior Curatorial Administrator for the Curatorial Department and Curatorial Assistant, European and American Art. The exhibition included 13 objects from the DMA’s collection.

Shaken, Stirred, Styled: The Art of the Cocktail November 18, 2016–November 12, 2017 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. The exhibition was presented by ROXOR Artisan Gin. The curator for the exhibition was Samantha Robinson, former Interim Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts and Design. The exhibition included 99 objects from the DMA’s collection, with 10 loans from two lenders. Exhibition attendance was 251,710.

Art and Nature in the Middle Ages December 4, 2016–March 19, 2017 The exhibition was made possible through generous loans from the collection of Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen Âge, Paris. The exhibition was presented by Texas Instruments. Additional support was provided by the Marguerite and Robert Hoffman Operating Fund and the Robert Lehman Foundation. The curator for the exhibition was Nicole R. Myers, The Lillian and James H. Clark Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, and the exhibition included 121 objects from five lenders. Exhibition attendance was 22,278. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue published by the Dallas Museum of Art.

Alfred Jensen: The Ten Thousand Things December 10, 2016–August 6, 2017 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. The curator for the exhibition was Gavin Delahunty, former Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. The exhibition included twelve objects and featured a new acquisition, Alfred Jensen’s 1972 work The Ten Thousand Things. The exhibition honored the memory of longtime DMA patron Elizabeth “Betty” Blake (1916–2016), who bequeathed the work to the Museum.

Carey Young: The New Architecture February 2–April 9, 2017 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. The presentation was made possible by TWO X TWO for AIDS and Art, an annual fundraising event that jointly benefits amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research and the Dallas Museum of Art, and by the Contemporary Art Initiative. The curator for the exhibition was Gavin Delahunty, former Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. The exhibition included 12 objects, nine of which were acquired for the DMA’s collection, and featured the world debut of Young’s first film, Palais de Justice.

Young Masters February 25–April 16, 2017 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. Exhibition support was provided by The O’Donnell Foundation. Each year the Young Masters exhibition features work by AP Fine Arts students in the Dallas area. This year’s exhibition included 65 works.

México 1900–1950: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco, and the Avant Garde March 12–July 16, 2017 The exhibition was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art and the Secretaría de Cultura/Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes/Museo Nacional de Arte, México (MUNAL), in partnership with the Latino Center for Leadership Development. The exclusive US presentation was made possible with support from Patrón Tequila. Leadership support was provided by Jennifer and John Eagle, the Eugene McDermott Foundation, Nancy C. and Richard R.
