SENSORY SCOUTS BY SARAH COFFEY As a champion of accessibility for all visitors, the DMA has offered programming, launched by Amanda Blake, Interim Director of Education, for children with autism and their families since 2009. Many families have grown up with our autism programs, and naturally, as our young visitors matured, their needs began to change. Taking notice, our Manager of Access Programs, Emily Wiskera, set to work designing a new program specifically with them in mind.

“Education programs for teens on the spectrum are rare, and we are thankful to see the DMA paving the way for others to follow!” –Rachel Schulze, DMA Member whose son attended the first Sensory Scouts program

Implementing a new program, however, doesn’t happen overnight— meticulous planning and thoughtful consideration are essential. Months before launching the pilot program in January, Wiskera reached out to families who had attended our Hands-On Art for Children with Autism summer camps, asking how the Museum could best meet their unique needs. Not only did parents recommend a specific day and time, but they also shared a desire to help their children further develop social skills. After consulting with a local specialist, Wiskera carefully planned the program components with parent feedback in mind. The resulting monthly program, Sensory Scouts for Adolescents with Autism, designed for teens and tweens on the autism spectrum, was piloted in January with six initial participants. As part of the ongoing piloting process, we continue to test and refine, maintaining communication with parents and evaluating the effectiveness of each session. Sensory Scouts was opened to the public in March, but testing will continue through September as we assess how best to serve these visitors. —Sarah Coffey is the Education Coordinator at the DMA.

In anticipation of the arrival of México 1900–1950: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Jose Clemente Orozco, and the Avant-Garde, the DMA, in collaboration with the Latino Center for Leadership Development, created Yo Soy DMA, an independent community effort to support the Museum. Its goal is to cultivate community engagement and increase attendance to the DMA by promoting the artistic, cultural, and historical significance of Mexican art. “I’m very pleased to be part of this project because you can see the history and culture of Mexico in the art shown here. Indigenous faces appear in art for the first time after the 1910 revolution,” said Jorge Baldor, Founder of the Latino Center for Leadership Development, “It’s a way of connecting communities, not only the Latino one, but all of them, by getting to know a culture that is so important to the place we live in.” The inclusive campaign brings together an unprecedented number of returning Museum-goers and first-time DMA visitors by creating an atmosphere of community engagement. Yo Soy DMA ambassadors generated excitement and awareness for the exhibition by giving presentations and placing flyers throughout the community, and by engaging in meaningful conversations with those in line for the exhibition.
