THE TEXAS GENERAL EXHIBITION OCTOBER

JANUARY 1943-1944

R \CE.. L \5 T.

HELD BY THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS OF HOUSTON. THE WITTE MEMORIAL MUSEUM OF SAN ANTONIO

FOREWORD Th e Texas Gene ral Exhibit ion, now in its fifth year, is still an infan t in th e calen da r of Amer ica n annual exhi bitio ns. Born in th e un settled months followin g th e European beginnin g of th e pr esent war , it had scarce ly begun to walk befo re th e traged y of Pearl Harbor bid well to stop any further gr owth if not it s very existence. But it is a lu sty child, an d th ough cri ppled by circ umstance it cont inu es to meet th e pur poses for which it was instituted. The T exas General Exhibition is a competit ive exhibit ion arrange d and held conjo intly by three Texas museums with the purpose of showing a gro up of work s representative of the ar tis ts of the state. Thi s yea r 171 individuals submitte d 288 work s for th e conside ration of th e j ury. From th ese, 87 works by 71 indio viduals wer e selected for exhibition. In a mea sure, the jury was guide d in its sel ection by th e requ ir ement s of space an d transport at ion facilities, but th e primary and governin g consi deration was the degree of attainment reached by th e various arti sts in the particular works sub mitte d. Th e falli bility of art juries is well known, and th e jury for this exhibition mad e no claims for exce ption. That th e exhibi tion is filled with thought-provoking works demonstrates the artistic matur ity of the artists of Texa s, is a source of gratification and a pr omise of a rich future. JAMES CHILLMAN, JR.
