THE TEXAS GENERAL EXHIBI FEBRUARY AND MARCH 1940
HELD BY THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS OF HOUSTON. THE WITTE MEMORIAL MUSEUM OF SAN ANTONIO
FOREWORD The Texas General Exhibit is the out come of a desire on the part of the Art Mu seums of Dallas, Hou ston and San Antonio to show a group of art work s which would be representative of the entire state. Collective action would avoid duplication of effor t as well as dilution of quality, which ar e natural results of exhibit ions of similar nature held during th e same season in the three cities. Mor eover , by showing the exhibit successi vely in eac h city, not only a wider audience should be reached but th e practical limitations imp osed by transportation should aid in the development of a high standar d of excelle nce. Th e idea of cooper ation between museum s in planning exhibitions is no new one but it has been applied but rarely to a compe titive exhibition and for T exa s, it is a new venture. Lik e all new ventures, its greates t developm ent and fulle st valu e lie ah ead , but alread y th e effort is ju stified by th e ready resp onse given by the artists. Th e nin ety-eight exhibits carefully selec ted by Paul Gardner ar e the real "proof of the pudding," and if th ey are th e cau se for pr esent congratulation , even more ar e they the pr oph ecy of a rich future. JAMES CHILLMAN, JR.
At th e invitation of th e three Mu seums. th e Exhibit wa s sel ec te d and Awards mad e by PAUL G ARD NER, Direct or of th e William Ro ckhill Ne lson Galler y of Art, Kansa s City, Mi ssouri.
