\':ftoreword This exhibition will give the visitor an opportunity to see a cross-section of contemporary American painting and sculpture, ranging all the way from representational art, which produces a more or less realistic image of the visible world, to pure abstraction , in which the artist uses form and color as freely as the musician uses sound. In between these two poles lie many styles as varied as the artists who created them. Thus the exhibition exemplifies the individualism and diversity of our democratic culture. Speaking personally, it has been interesting to me to find in much of the work a flavor peculiar to this region and different from the art of other sect ions . Twenty years ago there was a strong regionalist trend in American art - a trend which produced some work of lasting value that has been obscured by the movement's excesses of chauvinism and self-consciousness. Today the prevailing trends are in the opposite direction, away from regional differences and toward similar viewpoints appea ring in every section of the country. It is refreshing to find in Texas much art that seems to spr ing naturally from the soil and climate and character of the state, that has the virtues that come from the artist's identification with his surroundings, and that at the same time speaks in the universal language of form, color and design .
