Heroic Beethoven

Beethoven’s Triumph

Jaap van Zweden lends his powerful personality to Beethoven’s revolutionary Symphony No. 3, Eroica. Jeffrey Kahane plays Beethoven’s gentle Piano Concerto No. 4.

Jaap van Zweden begins an all-Beethoven program with the Overture to Egmont, then reprises the Symphony No. 7 he triumphantly recorded with the DSO in 2007. Three of Dallas’ favorite soloists — violinist Chee-Yun, cellist Lynn Harrell and pianist Anne-Marie McDermott — star in Beethoven’s Concerto for Piano, Violin and Cello.

Jan 20-23

Russian Romance

The cosmic musical personalities of Holst’s The Planets are enhanced with stunning accompanying video. Schubert’s poignant, melodic Unfinished Symphony and Josef Strauss’ waltz Music for the Spheres complete the program led by Thomas Wilkins.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Emanuel Borok plays the violin showpieces Sérénade mélancolique and Valse-Scherzo by Tchaikovsky. Italian conductor Paolo Carignani paces the heady melodies of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances and ephemeral scenes in Stravinsky’s Divertimento from the ballet The Fairy’s Kiss.

October Oct 14-16

Oct 21-24

Brahms A German Requiem

Magical Mendelssohn

Brahms’ sturdy A German Requiem is personal faith made public. Soprano Laura Aikin, baritone Russell Braun and the Dallas Symphony Chorus will follow Jaap van Zweden to amazing musical heights.

Young Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti is making waves internationally, and in her DSO debut she’ll play the lyrical Violin Concerto by Mendelssohn. Also on the program, led by Jaap van Zweden, is Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8.

Lay Concert Organ The Meyerson’s Lay Family Concert Organ will sound in magnificent glory during Richard Strauss’ powerful Also sprach Zarathustra and as Mary Preston plays the world premiere of the Organ Concerto by Danish composer Poul Ruders, a DSO commission. Conductor Roberto Minczuk also leads the buoyant Symphony No. 35, Haffner, by Mozart.

Serkin’s Brahms Distinguished pianist Peter Serkin returns to the DSO playing the colossal Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Thomas Dausgaard makes his Dallas debut, also conducting Nielsen’s Symphony No. 2, The Four Temperaments, which pairs musical movements with specific moods.

Jun Märkl, conductor of Orchestre National de Lyon, begins an all-French program with Debussy’s Images, fragrant musical impressions. Ravel’s La Valse conveys the intoxicating swirl of the ballroom. Dazzling pianist Ingrid Fliter returns to the DSO for Ravel’s jazzy Piano Concerto in G.

Jaap van Zweden and Dallas-based world percussion ensemble D’Drum play the premiere of Gamelan D’Drum by Stewart Copeland, drummer from The Police. Intrada for Brass and Percussion by Willem van Otterloo casts a ceremonial mood; Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, Scottish, was inspired by the folk songs and dramatic landscapes of Scotland.

Jaap van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra give voice to many manifestations of love — the outpourings in the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, the sentiment of Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier Suite, and the sweet intensity of Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe. Jean-Yves Thibaudet plays Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a whirlwind of virtuosity and expression.

Mahler’s Symphony No. 6

Romantic Tchaikovsky

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra embarks on a darkly emotional journey as Jaap van Zweden conducts the deeply moving Symphony No. 6 by Mahler. Massive in sound and scope, these performances will surely mark another benchmark for van Zweden and the DSO that you will not want to miss.

Russian pianist Olga Kern, who delighted audiences as gold medalist at the 2001 Van Cliburn Piano Competition, will play Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Jaap van Zweden pairs this most-popular concerto with Tchaikovsky’s imaginative Manfred Symphony, inspired by the Romantic poetry of Lord Byron.

Apr 14-17

Apr 21-23

Handel’s Messiah

Beloved Bach This all-Bach program features soloists from the DSO playing Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 1 and 5, the Orchestral Suite No. 4 and Keyboard Concerto No. 3. British historic performance specialist Richard Egarr will conduct and play harpsichord in his Dallas debut.

Apr 28-May 1 Merry Strauss Conductor Douglas Boyd offers a concise synopsis of the composing life of Richard Strauss — from his Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks and the Entr’acte after Act I from the opera Intermezzo to the valedictory Oboe Concerto played by the DSO’s Erin Hannigan. Haydn’s Symphony No. 103, Drum Roll, provides a lively interlude.

Jaap van Zweden will pace the powerful, pulsing dances of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, a work still revolutionary a century after its scandalous premiere. Music by Mozart — the Masonic Funeral Music and the grand Piano Concerto No. 25, played by the magnetic David Fray — will round out the evening.

Sponsors & Donors Musicians of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra think of their jobs as an investment, rather than work. Every hour of practice, each carefully studied note, is an investment in the future of music. While you may not be onstage with instrument in hand, by joining one of our membership groups or by becoming a sponsor, you are an equal partner in sustaining music, not only in our own lives, but for generations to come. We invite you to become a donor and join us in making your destination the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. For a complete listing of gift levels and benefits, please visit DallasSymphony.com/Donation.

Thanks to our season sponsors

The DSO would like to thank Texas Instruments for generously sponsoring our classical music series for 10 years.
