2013 Lexus LS: Toyota’s up-level division is remaking its lineup with a new common appearance. The flagship Lexus LS sedan receives its makeover for the 2013 model year and gets some features. Both regular- and extended-length LS 460 models return, along with the 4.6-litre V8 and the LS 600hL’s hybrid powerplant. A new LS 460 F Sport model is supposed to draw in more customers from BMW, Audi and MercedesBenz.

eBay watch 1974 Jensen Interceptor, sold, US $18,000: Obscure British vehicles are often fraught with a myriad of electrical and mechanical problems. Fortunately, this nearly 40-year-old Jensen appears well cared for by a knowledgeable seller. As well, Interceptors were built using Chrysler power — in this instance a 284-horsepower 440cubic-inch V8 (7.2 litres in Brit-speak) — connected to a three-speed automatic transmission, so parts won’t be a problem. In true British luxury tradition, the hatchback sports Connolly-leathercovered seats, dash, headliner and door panels. Visit www.ebaymotors.com.

Still stumped? Tom LaSorda came from a family that was heavily involved in the labour movement. He’s now CEO at Fisker Automotive.
Drawing Board
As usual, there’s a grey area between what a vehicle is rated at in terms of fuel consumption and what it will actually get. That’s because “what it will actually get” depends on you. But that grey area seems to be even a little greyer when it comes to hybrids. Putting a Camry Hybrid on the road for 3,000 kilometres yielded real-world fuel consumption of 7.0 l/100 km, which is much more than the 4.7 combined rating from Transport Canada. That was loaded up with gear and keeping pace with freeway traffic in 30 C heat with the air conditioning blasting away. The 7.0 is actually a pretty good number, but you’ll likely do better on the highway with a Passat diesel, for example, which excels at stretching highway fuel dollars, whereas the real benefit of a hybrid comes during in-city driving where the electric motor(s) is providing more assist. Keeping this mind, be careful to buy correctly for your use and to drive correctly for the vehicle — or you’ll run the risk of being disappointed. he 2013 model year is shaping up to be the fiercest ever in the already hyper-competitive midsize-sedan market, with three of the biggest sellers – the Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu and Nissan Altima – all redone. And then there’s Ford Motor Co., which is making big news with its radically restyled Fusion sedan. How well the Fusion ultimately succeeds in the marketplace remains to be seen over the next few years, but it’s starting off on the right foot from a fuelefficiency standpoint. According to Transport Canada, the 2013 Fusion Hybrid is rated at just 4.0 l/100 km in the city and 4.1 on the highway. Honda will have two hybrid versions of the Accord next year. The Chevrolet Malibu Eco is a partial hybrid that delivers
8.1 l/100 km in the city and 5.3 on the highway. The Altima, meanwhile, wins the class fuel-performance award for conventional gas-powered engines at 5.0 l/100 km-h on the highway, but the Altima is no longer offered in a hybrid model. “We are absolutely committed to class-leading fuel efficiency as a reason to buy Ford vehicles, with customers able to choose the fuel-efficient powertrain that best fits their lifestyle,” said Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally. In addition to the hybrid model, the Fusion is available with four other engine choices: three conventional gasoline four-cylinder powerplants (ranging from 175-240 horsepower) and the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. According to Ford, the Fusion Energi is more efficient than the Chevy Volt or the Toyota Prius plug-in,
despite being substantially bigger than both. The new Fusion arguably bears a stronger connection to a mid-size Jaguar than to a Ford sedan. Naturally, Ford is also bringing all of its technological forces to bear on the new Fusion as well. There’s active park assist to help parallel parking, lane-change warning technology, adaptive cruise control that automatically keeps pace with traffic, and a blind-spot sensor system. Time will tell, but it looks like the Fusion is going to be a huge step up for an already successful model. Could it rule the roost? Certainly Ford officials think so. The automaker is adding 1,200 jobs at its Flat Rock, Mich., assembly plant and investing US $555 million into the facility.
TWO DOORS FOR LEXUS: Lexus will unveil its new and über-sexy LF-CC hybrid coupe concept at the Paris Auto Show at the end of September. The hybrid powertrain features a combination of a 2.5-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor.
B-CAUSE THEY CAN: Also scheduled for an
unveiling at the Paris Auto Show at the end of the month is the all-electric B-Class Mercedes-Benz. The diminutive hauler is powered by a 134horsepower electric motor. It’s expected to go on sale in early 2014.
MURANO MOVE: Nissan is shifting producTo be the class leader, the Fusion has to excel at style, fuel performance and interior quality and function.
It looks a bit like a Kia Optima from the rear, but the front is really where it counts. Under the hood is the other place, where Ford has a total of five powertrain choices.
tion of its Murano tall wagon from Japan to its expanding manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tenn. Already, Nissan builds its Altima and Maxima sedans there and will also move production of the Rogue compact wagon there.

He was fast on the track, so he was fast-tracked to the top
A
By STEVEN REIVE
ll he wanted to be was the best the world had ever seen. Mistakes weren’t an option. He knew that early and thought about it often.
So it wasn’t much of a surprise when a 16-year-old Brazilian boy nicknamed “Rato” (Portuguese for mouse) had a change of heart about what he wanted to do in life. Rato and his brother “Tigrao” (big tiger) were out racing boats when Rato’s brother flipped at 120 km/h and landed upside down. In a flash, Emerson Fittipaldi’s career was decided.
Having made his Formula One debut in the 1970 British Grand Prix, Emerson then finished fourth in Germany and also ran well in Austria. Then came the ill-fated Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where Jochen Rindt was killed in a crash during practice. Earlier that day Emmo had also crashed at high speed but was unhurt, though severely shaken. His remaining teammate, John Miles, was so upset at Monza that he left Formula One racing for good. Emmo had three championship races on his resume and was now leading Team Lotus. “Pretty impressive responsibility at that age,” his biography would reveal.
“It was a miracle that my brother survived,” he once told his biographer, “and from then on, I knew I was given a second chance to make the most of my life.”
In the next race he achieved the best possible result, winning the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, N.Y., to rejuvenate the devastated team and guarantee that the 1970 driving title would go posthumously to Rindt.
The tale of one of the greatest racers of all time begins in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with the Fittipaldi brothers changing course and going to karting, and ends in Victory Lane around the world. The Mouse would be okay, after all. And in the end he would even have a new nickname: Emmo. Born on the 12th day of December in 1946, Fittipaldi was a world champion in open-wheel racing, from Formula One to the best North American circuits, twice winning the Indianapolis 500.
Pro-files Automotive legends and heroes
The youngest son of prominent Brazilian motorsports journalist and radio commentator Wilson Fittipaldi Sr., and his wife Juzy, a Polish refugee, he was named after American author and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson.
ILLUSTRATED BY ADAM YOUNG
Emmo was pretty talented, even in his teens. The boys fired up their own enterprise, which began with a steering wheel that Emerson made for his mother’s car, then developed into a thriving custom-car accessory business. Then came Fittipaldi Karts, built and raced by the brothers, though more successfully by Emerson, who became a Brazilian kart champion at the age of 18. In 1967, when the Fittipaldis turned to constructing Volkswagen-powered Formula Vee single seaters, Emerson drove one of them to the Brazilian championship. It was all full speed ahead. And the speed of his racing success at home prompted Emerson to abandon the pursuit of a mechanical engineering degree and compete abroad. In 1969, alone and unable to speak anything other than his native Portuguese, he arrived in England, bought a Formula Ford and was an immediate winner. A step up to Formula Three produced similarly impressive results and a reward in the form of a Lotus Formula Two contract for 1970. Quickly a top F2 contender, he was given a long-term contract by Lotus boss Colin Chapman, who eased him into his Formula One team near the end of the 1970 season. The promotion, in a third Lotus as understudy to regular drivers Jochen Rindt and John Miles, was intended to provide further seasoning for a driver who had leapfrogged up the racing ladder with staggering speed. But tragedy changed everything.
Armed with what was arguably the greatest Formula One design at the time, the Lotus 72D, Fittipaldi proved unstoppable in 1972 as he won five of 11 races and easily won the F1 Drivers’ Championship over Jackie Stewart. At age 25 he was then the youngest champion in F1 history (the record was topped by Fernando Alonso at age 24).
Fittipaldi eventually left Lotus to sign with the promising McLaren team, where he had three victories in 1974 and beat out Clay Regazzoni in a close battle for his second championship. Then, at the height of his F1 success, Fittipaldi shocked everyone by leaving McLaren to race for older brother Wilson Fittipaldi’s Copersucar-sponsored Fittipaldi Automotive team. It was hardly a world-class organization and he struggled, even failing to qualify for three races in his time there. He remained with the team for five seasons but only managed a best finish of second. Emmo decided to retire from racing at the end of 1980, admitting his last two years in Formula One were very unhappy. He was only 33, but had been racing in Formula One for a decade. The team struggled for another two years with minimal sponsorship, before going into receivership at the end of 1982. Two years later he made a remarkable comeback, not in Formula One but in the Indy Car open-wheel North American series. He soon became a crowd favourite with his open love of racing and his gracious attitude to his fellow drivers. Emmo’s smooth style and experience led to two Indianapolis 500 victories on that fearsome track. The second victory would be memorable, not for what happened on the track, but for him breaking Indy victory lane tradition when he drank a celebratory bottle of orange juice instead of the traditional bottle of milk. He was only the second driver to not drink milk at Indy since the tradition was founded in 1936. Fittipaldi owned several orange groves in his native Brazil, and wanted to promote the citrus industry. He was widely criticized and ridiculed for the action, even though he later took a sip of milk. He finally retired for good after suffering neck injuries in a crash at the start of the US 500 in Michigan in 1996 and later back injuries in a small-airplane crash. Today he continues his involvement in motorsports on multiple levels and is loved by fans on two continents. Rato became Emmo, who became a cult hero. “I was extremely lucky. I had some huge crashes and yet I am still here,” he said. A long way from Brazil, but a global citizen.

HISTORY Toyota’s gasoline-electric passenger car wasn’t the first hybrid to be sold in North America, but its practical fourdoor body style made it the class leader. An all-new Prius (a Latin word meaning “to go before”) hatchback arrived for the 2004 model year and had a 76-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine that functioned in combination with a 67-horsepower electric motor to make a net combined 110 horses. Power was directed to the front wheels by way of a continuously variable transmission. The Prius remained unchanged for six seasons before a bigger yet thriftier replacement arrived for the 2010 model year.
Toyota Prius 2004-’09 Central info unit
THE GOOD STUFF The Prius was all about delivering excellent fuel economy in a practical and relatively affordable package, and it did so with flying colours. There was probably no better vehicle for drivers who spent a great deal of time on gridlocked roads, as the electric motor alone allowed you to creep along without wasting gas, at least as long as the battery pack remained charged. The hatchback design provided carrying space for bulky objects, especially with the rear seat folded flat. The hybrid system was highly efficient, with an impressive fuel-consumption rating of 4.0 l/100 km city and 4.2 highway. The electric motor and batteries came with an extended eight-year warranty and by all accounts have held up well.
PRICES AT A GLANCE
Prius values have held relatively firm. Low-kilometre models and those with sunroofs and navigation systems could command higher prices. Note that a sudden spike at the pumps could further inflate these prices.
Cargo hold
HEADS UP! The 2004-’09 Prius was a big success, but it had some quirks. The continuously variable transmission made some unusual whirring noises and required getting used to. The front seats lacked sufficient side bolstering and the rear seat’s short lower cushion made long voyages rather tiresome. As well, tall riders had to be mindful of the sloping hatchback roof. The standard low-rolling-resistance tires (narrow and hard), the soft suspension setting and the relatively high overall weight produced considerable body lean. Note that the brakes could feel a bit grabby due to the car’s energy-storing regenerative braking system.

*The higher end of a given price range represents vehicles with more options and fewer kilometres.
OVERALL The 2004-’09 Prius was not merely a Corolla or Camry adapted for electric use. Instead, Toyota built the Prius as a dedicated hybrid model and buyers flocked to it. The car appeals to those who hate paying exorbitant fuel bills and want to be considered environmentally conscientious. If you’re concerned about warranty and/or hybrid longevity, buying a newer Prius with low kilometres is your best bet.

The sea provides new materials and new fuel for next-generation vehicles. By BILL MCLAUCHLAN
T
he common belief is that something won’t last very long unless it’s created in a lab. That might be always be the case, but the source material for such parts is quite literally in a liquid state. Cars with bodies and parts made from seaweed and powered by biofuel derived from algae and saltwater could be the wave of the future if a couple of companies have anything to say about it. Toyota has an ultralight, super-efficient plug-in hybrid vehicle featuring a bioplastic body made from seaweed. According to the company, it could be available inside of 15 years. Automakers are looking for ways to increase the amount of plastic parts in cars as a means to reduce weight and production emissions. Today, steel is still thought to be the best material to crank out cars, but the use of plastic is quickly gaining ground. Even luxury automakers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz use more plastic in their vehicles ever before, and that trend looks like it’s continuing. Demand for bioplastics is expected to hit $100 billion within a couple of years, according to a 2009 USA Today story. One snag, however, is that most plastics today still trace their roots to petroleum. Conventional petroleum-based plastic products don’t do much to alleviate North America’s dependence on oil, not to mention the associated economic, environmental and geo-political problems that come along for the ride. That’s some of the thinking behind Toyota’s green vision for the future and the 1/X Concept, so named because its “carbon footprint” is claimed to be a fraction of that of other cars. While not totally new – the 1/X Concept made its public debut at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show – this “environmentally considerate” hybrid is an interesting spinoff on the original concept. About the same general size as Toyota’s current Prius gaselectric hybrid, the revised 1/X still combines a homerechargeable lithium-ion battery pack with a 0.5-liter flexiblefuel engine in a drive system that’s about 25 per cent of the Prius’s powertrain. A strong carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) frame contributes to the car’s light 926-pound curb weight, less than one-third of the Prius. But the 1/X Concept’s most noteworthy attribute can be seen in bioplastic body panels derived from seaweed. “We used lightweight carbon fiber in the frame for its superior collision safety,” project manager Tetsuya Kaida said of the
Instead of steel, the Toyota I/X Concept, pictured, uses lightweight plastics derived from seaweed. Toyota’s upscale Lexus division uses similar bioplastic in its HS 250h Hybrid. Since bioplastic is not made of petroleum, it’s claimed to be easier on the environment. Could future cars be made almost entirely of bioplastic?
1/X. “But that material is made from oil. In the future, I’m sure we will have access to new and better materials such as those made from plants, something natural. “In fact, I want to create such a vehicle from seaweed because Japan is surrounded by the sea.” Kaida added that the 1/X Concept “points the way toward a much more sustainable relationship between humans and the environment. It’s also a direction for a future Prius, two or three generations ahead of the current car.” Florida-based Algenol Biofuels, working in partnership with Dow Chemicals, has big plans to power such future cars with its proprietary algae-to-ethanol biofuel. Typical corn-based ethanol has been criticized for straining the world’s food supply, contributing to global warming by encouraging the plowing of grasslands and consuming substantial amounts of the annual U.S. corn crop. The Algenol approach solves those problems by producing its ethanol fuel without occupying arable land or consuming feedstocks needed for human or animal consumption, a conflict that has been in the news many times this summer due to drought-ravaged crop yields. All it needs for production is seawater, sunlight and algae. Algenol has launched a demonstration facility at the chemical company’s Freeport, Tex., site where 3,100 algae “bioreactors,” through photosynthesis, convert carbon dioxide and seawater into ethanol (a hydrocarbon), oxygen and fresh water. The bioreactors are 50-foot-long by five-feet-wide troughs covered with flexible plastic (provided by Dow) and filled with about 1,000 gallons of saltwater. The water is then saturated with carbon dioxide to encourage algae growth. Unlike some existing processes that require growing algae and killing it to extract the oil – a time-consuming and expensive business – in the Algenol method the algae aren’t destroyed, so they keep yielding ethanol continuously, holding down costs. Algenol touts 6,000 gallons of ethanol per year per acre at a cost of less than $1 per gallon. By comparison, corn produces about 370 gallons per year per acre while sugar cane accounts for about 890 gallons per acre. With 139 million square miles of ocean covering the earth’s surface, and containing a volume of some 329 million cubic miles, there looks to be no shortage of future fuels from this promising process.
P H O TO C O N TR I B U TE D B Y A L G E N O L
Algae “bioreactors” from Algenol are claimed to produce ethanol fuel from algae and seawater. Since no corn is used — and the Algae is not killed in the process — there’s no stress on food supply and the land that grows it.

Well, tie me down
A trailer is only the first step in towing any vehicle to or from your garage. Equally important is securing your precious cargo so that it remains undamaged during transport. To that end, Mac’s Tie Downs will help ensure your vehicle stays put. The company features a wide assortment and size range of adjustable ratchet-type and non-adjustable straps. Many are sold in groupings, such as the Pro Pack that comes with four of Mac’s most popular wheel and axle tie-downs and also includes protective fleece sleeves that ensure damage-free security when wrapped through an expensive set of alloy wheels or when positioned anywhere near painted surfaces. The 20-piece Pro Pack even includes a heavy-duty storage bag. Check out the entire range of tie-down products at www.macscustomtiedowns.com.
Prevent seizures
If you have ever tried to remove a seized or rusted bolt, lug nut, wheel bearing (or similar fastener), you already understand the challenge. Instead of using a torch to heat them up or an air hammer to tear them apart, reach for the Mini-Ductor II and get the job done quickly and a lot more safely. The variety of coil sizes that come with this tool will heat up in about 20 seconds to provide extreme heat onto or around the nut or bolt precisely where you need it. From there, a quick turn or two from a wrench is all it takes. Other uses for the Mini-Ductor II include removing weather stripping, spray-on bedliner, window stickers and even hail dents. Visit www.theinductor.com to view the demo video and order from www.tooldesk.com.
Retro-look batteries
Installing a period-correct battery will add authenticity to any classic vehicle’s looks. Antique Auto Battery produces an assortment of six- and 12-volt power sources that look just like those made from 1920-’74. These aren’t fake covers that conceal a modern battery, but accurate reproductions right down to the lettering on the cases and the size and color of the caps. The only differences are in the modern materials used to construct each battery. The company also supplies the necessary cables for most North American and British makes, including Delco, Autolite, Mopar, Lucas and Willard. Each comes with a 48-month pro-rated warranty. You can preview the company’s complete line at www.antiqueautobattery.com.
That’s a wrap!
Flying insects of all types and sizes seem intent on splattering themselves all over your car’s nose and outside mirror pods. Mix that mess in with the inevitable road-tar bits plus assorted dirt, grease and grime and even the shortest road trip can really mess up your ride. Road Wrap is a disposable, self-adhering, clear polyethylene film that you apply to your vehicle as if you were wrapping up leftover food. The standard 45-centimetre-wide-by-30-metre-long roll can be cut to the exact width you need. And each roll includes a small cutting blade for trimming around headlights and grille openings. According to the manufacturer, each application is good for up to seven days use. Watch the instructional video and purchase your Road Wrap from www.buyroadwrap.com.

but when was the last time you ventured off road, anyway? By MALCOLM GUNN
I
t was a category full of off-roaders that buyers just couldn’t get enough of. The seemingly unstoppable Ford Explorer. The go-anywhere Nissan Pathfinder. It’s amazing how things change in five or six years. In simple terms, the Explorer and Pathfinder are no longer truck-based, off-road-capable sport utility vehicles. Like the Explorer, Nissan’s seven-passenger bus has emerged from its chrysalis as a family wagon able to conquer nasty road and weather conditions. The Tennessee-built wagon had remained virtually untouched since the 2005 model year. A robust body-on-frame chassis made it ideal for boulder-bashing, creek-fording activities. That’s all well and good, but it’s likely that Pathfinder owners rarely, if ever, risked blazing their own path in a rig costing as much as $55,000. Enter the all-new version that abruptly changes course and adjusts its stride in step with similar models from other automakers. The new Pathfinder, which arrives this fall, has been on a serious diet, shedding about 240 pounds over the outgoing model. This meant converting to a unitized (frameless) platform that’s shared with Nissan’s Infiniti JX luxury wagon. More importantly, the previous 266-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 was dropped in favour of the one-engine-fits-all 3.5-litre V6. In the new Pathfinder, it’s rated at 260 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. The V6 is teamed with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that replaces the previous five-speed automatic. The resulting reduction in fuel consumption, at least on paper, seems impressive. Front-wheel-drive versions (yes, you can now buy a Pathfinder with torque going to only the front wheels) are rated at 10.5 l/100 km city and 7.7 highway, while four-wheeldrive Pathfinder numbers are a closely aligned 10.8 and 7.9. There is a penalty to be paid for the new Pathfinder’s weight and power decrease in that its maximum towing capacity has
dropped to 4,994 pounds from 5,984. Nissan’s 4x4 option is worth it for anyone living and working in Canadian snow-belt regions where being stranded in -30 C conditions is just not an option. The All-Mode 4x4-i system allows you to select either two- or four-wheel-drive, or engage the Auto setting and let the All-Mode make the call, based on where tire slippage is detected. The new sheet metal manages a passing resemblance to the outgoing rig as far as the grille is concerned. But from there the quaintly boxy body-of-old, with its muscular fender flares, has given way to gentle, sweeping curves and rounded edges. Dimensionally, the new “Path” gains about 13 centimetres in length, 11 centimetres in width and five centimetres between the front and rear wheels. Maximum cargo capacity with both rear rows of seats folded has increased only a fraction, perhaps owing to a slightly lower roofline. Passenger comfort was apparently paramount with Nissan’s designers, who created a third-row reclining seat and a second row with 13 centimetres of fore and aft travel. The split-second bench also features an “EX Flex” portion that slides forward for easier third-row access, even when there’s a child seat attached. At a starting price of $31,600, including delivery charges (about $8,000 less than the base 2012 model), the Pathfinder S is expected to come with the usual accessories, including tri-zone climate control and 14 cup/bottle holders. The SV adds roof rails and a rearview monitor while leather-covered seats, remote engine start and a power liftgate are SL highlights. From there, the sky’s the limit on the options front, with features such as an up-level sound system. Around View camera, panorama moonroof and a navigation system yours for the asking, depending on the depth of your pockets. The reborn Pathfinder might have been stripped of its traditional sport ute bravado, but it will certainly add new friends with an easy-on-gas powertrain, easy-to-take creature comforts and easy-on-the-eyes design.
Up to seven people can fit inside the Pathfinder for a night on the town. A weekend getaway with a crew that big? Probably not.

From movie cars to custom hot rods,
he has built them all
L
By JEFF MELNYCHUK
ike a magician pulling a rabbit from a hat, car creator Gene Winfield seemingly makes the impossible possible.
And while creating automotive magic over a span of six decades is nothing short of amazing, unlike the magician, there’s no smoke, no mirrors and no slight of hand. Just plane old-fashioned hard work and relentless dedication. If that wasn’t enough, if you ever get the chance to strike up a conversation with Winfield, you’ll find him to be a pleasant, well-meaning and understated fellow all too eager to share his life’s work and the artistry of his craft. If you’re lucky, you might even get to attend one the seminars he still does from time to time, passing on his skills to car crafters all over North America. Unlike some others of his ilk who bided their time doing various jobs before building custom cars, Winfield, born in 1927, took the direct approach and opened up a hotrod shop with his two brothers after returning from the Second World War, where he served in the Navy. Success and Winfield rolled along together like a wheel and a tire, and soon after he opened his own business, Windy’s Custom Shop. By 1955, he expanded into a new location called Winfield’s Custom Shop, where he built prototypes for Chrysler and Ford.
Like George Barris, whose rolling TV and movie creations are now legendary, Winfield, too, possessed the Midas touch, turning everyday family cars in gold. Among the lengthy list of creations are the Maxwell Smart car from Get Smart, The Reactor, built for the Bewitched TV series, and even the shuttlecraft for Galileo 7 (the Enterprise’s scout ship) from the Star Trek series. Winfield creations have also found their way into more than 20 Hollywood films, including Bladerunner, for which he built 25 vehicles, Robocop and The Last Starfighter. He also created the flying version of the Delorean time traveller for the Back to the Future series of flicks. Further proof that Winfield can deliver just about anything the imagination can dream up lies in his advertising work. Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. wanted to convey the point that they could finance any car. So, Winfield built the “anycar” out of 30 different cars. For Chevrolet, he cut a car in half lengthwise and made both pieces independently driveable. For Sunoco, Winfield froze a car in giant block of ice only for it to be chipped out and started. The list goes on.
How does one go about creating rolling works of art? Aside from having an acceptable vision from which to work, it requires perfecting the techniques used with different Automotive legends mediums, most of which have been developed in the School and heroes of Hard Knocks. Whether aluminum, steel, wood, plexiglass or fiberglass, Winfield can bend, weld, grind, mold and blend it into just about Winfield also spent some time in the 1960s as a consultant designer with any shape imaginable. Speaking of blending, a Winfield creation can easily model-car company AMT. When the company opened up a Speed and be spotted by the trademark “blended” paint job, for which a variety of Custom Division, Winfield was the obvious choice to head it up, and thus dark and light colours are used to accentuate the curves of a particular vehicle, just as if it were a picture being painted on canvas. began the real fun.
Pro-files
Where plastic model kits normally come about from full-sized versions of cars, Winfield was tasked with the reverse: build big cars from the little ones. With few people possessing Winfield’s talent for creating all things automotive, it wasn’t long before Hollywood came a knockin’. In fact, it was the AMT promotional vehicles that led to the building of others destined for the silver screen.
Not to undersell his ability, Winfield can not only remold factory sheet metal, but can also build a dream car from the wheels up, provided of
course that you’ve got the means to fund a one-off show car. Recognition is all too familiar to Winfield, whose creations have garnered international fame, respect and envy. And for some, next to keeping all those creations for yourself, that would be enough. Rather than hang up his torch and grinder, Winfield pursues his craft at his California shop aptly named Winfield Rod and Customs. And when he’s not building cars, he’s talking about them at seminars and at large events, such as the Specialty Equipment Marketers Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, Nev., which is where we happened to catch up with him.
The original Star Trek series featured the Galileo 7 shuttle, which was created by Gene Winfield. There were plenty of other vehicles built for the silver screen, too.
Whether you call him an artist, craftsman, visionary, a teacher, or just a plain old nice fella, Gene Winfield’s rolling wonders earn him the title of automotive magician, without the smoke and mirrors.

Electric supercar wows at Pebble Beach:
1
Get a detailed look at the Emerge-e on our Facebook page; facebook.com/autoshiftweekly.
Infiniti’s striking Emerge-e Concept, a range-extended 402horsepower electric sports car, made its North American debut at the 62nd annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California in August, one of the world’s premier celebrations of the automobile. Named Best in Show at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the concept is being hailed as an achievement in both engineering and design. As the first mid-ship sports car ever produced by Nissan’s Infiniti luxury division -the powertrain is in the rear instead of the front - it blends supercar performance with the ability to function as a true electric vehicle, said Infiniti Americas vice-president, Ben Poore. The one-off concept can accelerate to 60 mph (96 km-h) from zero in four seconds flat.
From hybrids, technology, new vehicles and the environment to saving money at the pumps.

The base Regal will get standard eAssist, which basically applies extra torque via a heavy-duty belt. Hybridized Regal costs more but drinks less: Buick is banking that improved fuel performance from the 2013 Regal sedan will offset the cost of attaining its 8.3/5.4 l/100-km city/highway Transport Canada rating. That might a rather big stretch since making the 2.4-litre eAssist hybrid-electric system standard on the base Regal brings with it a $6,905 premium over last year’s non-assisted starting price of $29,940. Nevertheless, the $36,845 Regal eAssist handily trumps the 2012 base model’s 10.7/6.3 fuel rating, especially in urban driving. “It changes the fuel economy, but not the experience, for 97 per cent of new car buyers who aren’t buying hybrids,” said eAssist chief engineer Stephen Poulos, who refuses to call it a hybrid system.

GM invests in lightweight steel: The question persists: how to make cars lighter, thus improving fuel efficiency without compromising strength and safety. One answer might be NanoSteel, the product of a Rhode Island company that can be made with varying tensile strengths, depending on a vehicle’s structural requirements. NanoSteel comprises advanced alloys whose strength and ability to be shaped meet the demands of modern automaking. According to emerging technologies Web site Gizmag, the company will market its sheet metal products this year and has recently received investment from General Motors, “suggesting they could soon be appearing in production vehicles.” NanoSteel says its products can be cold-formed, meaning there’s no need for elevated temperatures to form parts, a process that is energy-intensive, expensive and time consuming.
Lithium-air might trump lithium-ion batteries: For shoppers who might consider an electric vehicle if not for the dreaded “range anxiety” issue, science might find a way, reports the New York Times daily newspaper. Much blame for that anxiety - the stress of running out of juice on the road - can be assigned to the best battery that electro-chemists and engineers have so far developed for mass production: the lithium-ion battery. Researchers at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland have demonstrated an early form of a much more capable electrochemical cell, based around the lithium-air battery, which could provide four-to-10 times more energy density per mass unit than lithium-ion cells can. “We need to go beyond the 300-mile (500km-h) driving range for Electric vehicles,” said chemist Peter Bruce, “so we need a transformational shift. Lithium-air batteries have the potential to provide it.”
Parts can’t be stamped out of strong, lightweight carbon fibre, but new steel being developed might provide an alternative.

Volt sales are building, but it’s still a drop in the bucket compared to more mainstream transportation. Momentum builds in Chev Volt sales: Jumping the gun on official sales numbers for August, the Detroit Free Press newspaper reports that General Motors sold 2,500 range-extended electric Volts that month, beating its best-ever month - March 2012 - by almost 200 units. “We’re really seeing momentum continuing to build. As people see their neighbors have one and as they start to understand the technology and are able to drive it, they put it into their consideration,” GM spokeswoman Michelle Malcho told the newspaper. That’s still a drop in the bucket compared to “normal” production vehicles - Toyota sold just shy of 30,000 U.S. Camrys in July - but nonetheless is encouraging news for GM, which has been locked in battle in sales for its all-electric Nissan Leaf.
