It seems like just another quiet night in the big city. But that’s when your trusty gumshoe

Nissan Pathfinder

gets down and dirty digging up the news.

The Ford Explorer went through a similar metamorphosis and fared quite well. How will the new Nissan Pathfinder do without its rough-and-tumble image? Likely OK considering it will be one of the only ways to get a seven-passenger vehicle from Nissan.

A kinder, gentler Pathfinder will soon find its way to Nissan dealers:

T

he Sleuth has had more than just an under-wraps sneak peak at the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder and he likes what he sees. Although fans of the outgoing model’s macho looks might be disappointed, the new version should be plenty capable on or off the beaten track, even though it’ll be based on the Altima sedan platform. But where it should really shine is in the fuel-economy department, thanks to a massive 220-kilogram weight reduction, an expected 30 per cent improvement in overall fuel economy and a base price that’s a bit less than that of the previous Pathfinder. Also doing its bit for fuel conservation is a new 3.5-litre V6. However given that year-to-date sales of the current edition are running 23 per cent ahead of last year (in the United States, anyway), the Sleuth can’t help but wonder how such a massive overhauling of the Pathfinder will be received in the marketplace. Stay tuned.

He has been called the “Flying Finn,” the “Iceman” and “Mika the Magnificent”. As the most successful Finnish driver in Formula One history, and with 20 wins, Hakkinen was a quiet man on a circuit full of flash. Born on Sept. 28, 1968, near Helsinki, he began racing go-karts when he was 5. Within three years he was a karting champion. In 1991, after more than a decade working his way up, Hakkinen jumped from Formula 3000, the minor leagues of open-wheel racing, to F1. After two seasons with Lotus, Hakkinen was attracting more attention. He wanted to join prestigious Team McLaren that had an opening for 1993. However, the team signed Michael Andretti from the Indy openwheel circuit. Andretti, however, crashed out in many of his races. With three races left in the season, Hakkinen, a test driver at the time for Mclaren, was signed to a full-time contract. In 1994, Hakkinen became McLaren’s No. 1

ILLUSTRATED BY ADAM YOUNG

driver and went on to win his first Grand Prix in 1997 and, one year later, take the F1 championship. He won it all again the next year to become just the seventh driver in 50 years to win back-to-back titles. After a less-than-spectacular season in 2000, Hakkinen decided to take a year off and then retired in 2002. Fast, fair and fearless, Hakkinen was one of the few drivers who has given the legendary Michael Schumacher a serious challenge. On many occasions, Hakkinen was even better, “I just don’t want to hurt myself anymore,” he said upon retirement from Formula One. Hakkinen has since been active in sports-car racing in Germany.

What

you should

Imagine a car that eats other cars, just with stability control and a nice stereo...

T

By MALCOLM GUNN

o be polite about it, the old Dodge Viper was . . . difficult. In just about every way. That might have appealed to a limited number a hard-edged speed junkies, but to find an actual market of buyers with $100,000 to spend on something cool and drivable, the new SRT Viper has to be something much more. And it is. It’s a real car. With real seats. And real electronics. The Viper now wears an SRT badge (no more Dodge) and returns following a two-modelyear absence. During that time, the hot-handed coupe (no roadster yet) has been thoroughly reengineered with an eye not to softening the package, but to make it more useable. Kind of like putting a saddle on a dragon instead of riding it bareback. The Viper moves into the realm of an exoticsupercar contender, no matter the competitor. An inspection reveals a car that has had its rough edges rounded off and deportment upgraded to finishing-school status. Lacking any real iconographic background, the stylists could have taken any direction with the car’s shape. Yet, they produced a two-seater that pulls the very best styling cues from past Vipers. A significant improvement is a longer roofline that joins right at tail of the car, with a faux rear quarter “window,” which helps the car look longer and lower and not cobbled together like a store mannequin. The body is made of carbon fibre and aluminum and is about 45 kilograms lighter than that of the 2010 model, according to SRT. The shell sits atop a platform that is 50 per cent more torsionally rigid (resistant to twisting). Assisting is a very obvious aluminum “X” brace that firms

up the engine-compartment structure. Numerous suspension upgrades - many learned through the previous Viper’s racetrack experience - have been incorporated into the SRT. The tale of the tape confirms the Viper’s nearly identical length and width, with about four centimetres added to the height. This aids entry and exit, as do the seats, which are positioned about 2.5 centimetres lower than before. Once aboard, knowledgeable Viper-ists will note a sophisticated cabin, including a high-style dashboard, large round air inlets, easy-to-read dials and a beefy flat-spotted steering wheel (for easier cockpit access). The standard interior is finished in vinyl and leather, with all-leather Nappa coverings just an option-tick away. What’s standard is the Viper’s 8.4-litre cam-inblock V10. Displacement is unchanged, but output has been upped to 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, from 600/560. At one time those numbers would have seemed inconceivable in a Dodge/Chevy/Ford production car, but the Corvette ZR1 makes 638 horses while the best Mustang makes 662. Wow. A six-speed manual gearbox is the sole transmission offered for Viper while the critical addition of “launch control” should keep you safe and quick while making the 355-millimetre-wide Pirelli tires last longer. Fuel-consumption stats aren’t out yet, but expect the new Viper to slightly improve on the 2010 edition’s 16.8 l/100 km in the city and 9.2 on the highway. The $100,000 payout for the base model includes a one-day SRT Track Experience

know:

to make sense of the car. It should be considered necessary for any new owner. The GTS adds about $20,000 - about $3,000 less than in the United States, actually - and a unique carbon-fibre hood with dual air extractors (the base car has six smaller ones). Also included is dualmode (track or road) driver-adjustable Bilstein shocks, four-mode stability control (as opposed to on/off in the base car) with less invasive Sport and Track settings, premium 12-speaker Harmon Kardon-brand audio system and a navigation with voice recognition. There are also various wheel/ tire package upgrades, an even better 18-speaker audio package and fancier trim bits that can be fitted to the Viper.

Despite its price, the Viper is actually one of the more inexpensive ways to pound the heck out of Italian and German exotics. And now that it’s a real car, perhaps some of those buyers will attempt to court the serpent.

Type: Two-door, rear-wheel-drive sport coupe Engine (hp): 8.4-litre OHV V10 (640) Transmission: Six-speed manual Market position: Chrysler won’t allow Chevrolet’s Corvette be the only homegrown game in town. Bringing back the Viper as the SRT flagship is an audacious move that emphasizes Chrysler’s performance prowess. Points: Back, and looking better than ever; Attention to detail inside the cabin makes up for past sins; Amazing how closely matched Viper and ZR1 Corvette are; A direct-shift automated transmission option would be appealing; For shame, the steering wheel tilts but doesn’t telescope; Standard stability control an on/off affair; GTS’s is better. Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. L/100 km (city/hwy) 16.8/9.0 (est.); Base price (incl. destination) $102,000

Despite a massive redesign, how cool is it that the new Viper emulates the best styling cues of the first GTS model from 1996, such as the arcing fender vent.

Ford’s first sport-ute was the right package at just the right time

Clean, simple, rugged and cheap, the first Bronco was in a class of one until Chevy came out with the Blazer.

S

By MALCOLM GUNN

port-utility vehicles moved from the fringe to mainstream when Ford created the Bronco. The success of the company’s off-roader also pushed General Motors and Chrysler into developing similar products and ultimately led to the popularity of this hot segment. Before the Bronco, Jeep’s CJ was the reigning champion of the sport ute set. Its only rivals were

few and far between and included the International Scout as well as a trickle of British Land Rovers that managed to make it to our shores. And with buyers focused on full-size sedans and pickups, there seemed to be very little interest in making vehicles that specialized in going where most buyers feared to tread. Ford’s product planners, however, saw things a bit differently. They correctly surmised that

a market existed for a small, lightweight and economical multi-purpose machine beyond the obvious commercial or military applications. With literally millions of farmers, ranchers and outdoor enthusiasts of every stripe to draw upon, fourwheel-drive remained an untapped area of sales and revenue. To keep the price down and the versatility up, the truck they designed was not much larger than a Jeep, with a short (92-inch/233-centimetre) wheelbase and generous ground clearance to help it navigate around and over tight spots. The initial 1966 Bronco that arrived in August of 1965 (and was unveiled in dealer showrooms two months later) was similar to the Mustang in many respects. Other than their equine-derived names, both vehicles used mechanical components borrowed from Ford’s compact Falcon, which helped keep development costs down. Although base prices were low (around $2,300), each tried to seduce buyers with a host of extra-cost options and features. Originally, first-year Broncos were equipped with a tiny 170-cubic-inch inline six-cylinder engine that produced 105 horsepower. However, by mid-year, a 200-horsepower 289 cubic-inch V8 was added to the option sheet. Both were connected to a column-shifted three-speed standard transmission, a necessary feature that helped make the most of the base motor’s barely adequate power. Each of the three body styles offered – wagon, half-cab (pickup) and open-top roadster – came with a two-speed transfer case that was engaged via a T-handled floor shifter. A rear bench seat, secondary fuel tank and floor mats were optional on all models, as were an assortment of dealer-installed winches, air-lift springs, snowplow kits and trailer hitches. Encouraged by the more than 18,000 first-year Bronco sales, Ford added more optional goodies in 1967, including a chrome grille and a more car-like interior trim package. In its first four years, the Bronco had the market pretty much to itself, with nary a peep from GM or Chrysler. That all changed in 1969 when the Chevy Blazer first appeared to challenge Ford’s exclusivity among the Big Three automakers. The pickup-based Chevy ute offered more power and features than the Bronco and quickly gained a strong foothold in what was becoming a rapidly growing category. Still, the Bronco remained the class favourite, especially with fans of off-road competition. The highlight of this emerging form of motorsports was the Baja 1000, a punishing 1,000-mile

(1,600-kilometre) journey across the Mexican desert. Led by former stock car racer Bill Stroppe, a specially prepared factory-sponsored Bronco co-driven by Indy-car driver Parnelli Jones took first place in the 1971 event. That year, Ford dealers began taking orders for the Baja Bronco, a specially equipped model that came with a 302-cubic-inch V8, four-speed gearbox, roll bar, dual front and rear shocks, fender flares and a distinctive paint scheme. During the next three years, about 650 of these tough-as-nails stallions were shipped from Bill Stroppe’s Long Beach, Calif. facility. With nearly 26,000 wagons sold (the roadster and pickup styles had been discontinued earlier) in 1974, the summit had been reached. GM was experiencing even greater success with both its Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Jimmy sport utes growing in popularity. Chrysler also joined the fray that year with its Dodge Ramcharger, a rig similar in overall dimensions and power to the Blazer/ Jimmy duo. With size clearly becoming a factor with buyers, Ford ended production of its original Bronco in 1977 to launch an all-new version based on the company’s popular F-150 pickup. Today, the few remaining first-generation Broncos are sought-after by collectors who appreciate its clean and simple lines and rugged demeanor. That’s high praise for this pioneering little truck that helped to bring sport-utility vehicles out of the automotive wilderness and into our driveways.

Aside from recently making the original Bronco bodies available through the aftermarket for restoration purposes, Ford even built this concept Bronco for show in 2004.

he autumnal exercise of automotive euphoria is in high gear as the 2013 models begin to arrive. This year’s battle for your bucks crosses all boundaries, from the racy and pricey to the inexpensive and eco-friendly. But which vehicles are the most anticipated? We have eight hot prospects for you. Cadillac ATS This General Motors division has come around to the idea that bigger isn’t always better, so it developed the ATS to try and find a place alongside the top sporty compact sedans such as the BMW 3-series. The ATS is not simply a cut-down version of the larger CTS. Lead designer Dave Leone’s vision for the ATS partnered a light and compact body, with the power of rear- and all-wheel drive, along with a front strut suspension to improve steering performance over the CTS. The ATS offers three engine types: the entrylevel 2.5-litre four-cylinder; a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo; and the attack-style 3.6-litre V6 rated at 321 horsepower. Chevrolet Spark Chevy is touting the Spark as “the driving solution for city living” in the manufacturer’s hope that this stylish and affordable entry will clobber the microcar market. Small on size but big on technology and creature comforts, one of the Spark’s greatest features is its ability to slide into tight parking spaces where few cars have gone before. Ten standard airbags also offer safety assurance in a small vehicle. The 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine delivers about 6.0 l/100 km on the highway. Expect pricing to be less than micro-car competitors from 2012, such as the Scion iQ and the Fiat 500 Pop. Dodge Dart Given the recent success Dodge has generated by mining its roots with models such as the Challenger and Charger, a resurrection of the Dart makes perfect sense as a compact sedan entry for 2013, since that really what is was back in the 1970s. The Dart carries the Dodge logo on its rear end, but this is every bit a vehicle inspired by Fiat. Two initial engine options are offered: the “Tigershark” 2.0-litre four-cylinder; and the 1.4litre turbocharged four-cylinder also found in the Fiat 500 Abarth. A meatier 184-horsepower 2.4litre Tigershark is expected to come online later. The standard six-speed manual transmission is built by Fiat Powertrain, though there is a six-speed automated manual option with the turbo. Subaru BRZ It’s billed as a collaborative effort between Subaru and Toyota that carries characteristics of each brand. Subaru’s 2.0-litre engine is at the heart of both, however. Interestingly, the fuel injection is designed by Toyota. Rather rev-happy, it’s rated at an even 200 horsepower. Manual and automatic transmissions are offered, each with six ratios. Subaru’s advertised vision for the BRZ is to bring “superior steering response” with the power

Feeling a little superstitious? Eight new cars that seem to come out of nowhere for the new model year

For a decade, the Altima has been one of those category-defining models.

The ATS is intended to go head-to-head with Europe’s better sporty compacts.

The new Dart has its roots heavily entrenched in Italian automotive architecture.

The ILX might carry Honda Civic DNA, but is there really anything wrong with that?

By TODD D. BURLAGE of rear-wheel-drive and the balance of a sports car. The rear-drive layout - a first for Subie - and the relative lightweight of 2,690 pounds (1,220 kilograms) should help to reach that performance goal, along with a centre of gravity that’s only at knee height. Visually, the BRZ could actually be mistaken for a hardtop Mazda Miata, a staple of an affordable and popular performance vehicle. SRT Viper Back by popular demand - for a fifth generation - the 2013 SRT Viper no longer carries the Dodge logo. What did make it this time around is the V10 engine displacing 8.4 litres and cranking out 640 horsepower. A true world-class two-seat sports car now – zero to 96 km/h in the mid-threesecond range – the previous Viper chassis has been stiffened with an obvious X-brace under the hood. Carbon fibre in hood construction, high-end in-car technology and a 10-centimetre extension of the cockpit are just a few features added to this budget-busting machine that should start at about $120,000. Launch control, a full suite of electronics and a finely tailored interior all get the nod.

Acura ILX With a growing appeal for efficiency and affordability in a premium-car wrapper, it makes a whole lot of sense for Acura to add the ILX as a lower-cost point of entry into this brand. The premium compact ILX can actually be had in a gasoline-electric hybrid derivative, making it the first such vehicle to carry the Acura name. Expect most ILX buyers to opt for the traditional 2.4-litre four-cylinder paired with a conventional automatic transmission, all in a thinly veiled spinoff of parent Honda’s Civic Si. From door handles, sharper styling and more cabin comfort, the ILX features some subtle differences from the Civic, but the platform is similar. Ford C-Max Energi There’s no question that the competition among eco-friendly vehicle manufacturers has never been hotter. And with that in mind, Ford is going full throttle with the launch of the C-Max Energi, a plug-in hybrid billed to deliver more than 800 kilometres total range, achieve more than 30 kilometres of electric-only range, and make an average daily commute on electricity alone. Production of the C-Max Energi is part of Ford’s strategy to triple its electrified vehicle capacity by 2013. Nissan Altima Dramatic change will always be a high-risk, highreward approach to car building. Oftentimes triedand-true is best for consistent sales and that’s why Nissan is leaning on its 2013 Altima to make a run at the top spot in the mid-size market. The new Altima is slightly longer and wider but also lighter than before, yet it remains the same in many ways. An efficient four-cylinder powerplant designed to achieve nearly 6.0 l/100 km – the same as the smaller Chevy Spark – on the highway should be a big draw.

Safe and out of sight

The common tendency is to stash all sorts of random items in the trunks of our cars. But if you’re serious about properly storing tools, sports equipment, car-care products or anything else left lying around, a Custom Pocket Pod from Covercraft might be the solution. The company makes a variety of single-, double- and triplecarpeted, vacuum-formed “pockets” that can be attached (no drilling required) to the inside of your car’s trunk lid. You don’t have to wonder if the Pocket Pod will fit your vehicle since each unit has been custom-designed for specific makes and models. Prices start in the US $100 range. For sizing and ordering info, go to www.covercraft.com/pocket_pods.htm. View our ever-evolving auto gift guide at: www.wheelbase.ws/media (click the “Cool auto gift ideas” category at the right)

Feel a burn-out coming?

If there’s a drag racing fan in your family who has a hard time getting out of bed in the morning, this Drag Racing Alarm Clock should help them off to a fast start. The clock features authenticlooking staging lights — called a “Christmas tree” in racing parlance — with orange staging lights that sequentially begin to light up as an 8,000-horsepower top fuel dragster begins to warm up. When the bottom green lights illuminate, there’s the roar of the engine as the imaginary dragster heads down the strip, which should be loud enough to rouse anyone from a deep slumber. Along with a clock and snooze bar, the base also comes with a temperature and humidity gauge. The Drag Racing Alarm Clock sells for US $32 (not including the necessary three AA batteries) and is available at www.alarmclocksonline.com/ DragRace.htm.

Helmets to scale

Formula One fans are likely already aware of f1store’s Web site, which carries all the latest swag. For example, it has recently added to its collection of 1:2-scale (that’s half size) racing helmets that are exact copies of the ones that current hotshot drivers are wearing. The newest arrivals feature those of Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher (commemorating his 300th Grand Prix start). Helmet designs for Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are also available as well as a full-scale 1:1 (full size) pit-crew helmet for the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team. Prices vary from about US $100-$175 for the driver’s helmets, while the full-size pit crew version sells for about US $580. Check out the entire collection at www.f1store.formula1.com.

More barn finds

Author Tom Kotter recently launched “The Corvette in the Barn,” a continuation of his “in the Barn” book series that includes “The Cobra in the Barn”, “The Hemi in the Barn” and “The Vincent (motorcycle) in the Barn”. The stories focus on when, where and how people have located rare and/or collectable vehicles that have been stashed away for years in barns, garages, warehouses and fields, etc. Many of the cars have a strong connection to the original, or bequeathed owners who, in most cases, are reluctant to part with their treasures. How they are finally convinced to part with these abandoned classics and restored to good running order makes for fascinating reading. Cotter’s book is available at most major bookstores, or through www.amazon.com for less than US $20, or downloaded from Apple’s iTunes store for US $13.
