Front Runner Transit Station

Masterplan for a transit-oriented development for Brigham City, Utah

Front Runner Transit Station Location: Brigham City, Utah

Site Boundaries

My Role: As part of a regional planning charrette

for the Brigham city area, I was given the opportunity to study and produce a proposal for the development that would occur around the future Front Runner transit station. Before producing a proposed design, I studied and analyzed the relationship that would occur between the new tranist station and the surrounding community. Analysis was done on existing stations in and out the region in order to best understand how to design a effective transit oriented development for the city. This project I helped me develop an appreciation for the importance of designing good circulation for access to and from important nodes. I also learned the importance of communication with the local leaders and residents to understand the needs of the community.

Red Butte Native Garden Masterplan for a Utah native plant garden.

Red Butte Native Garden Location: Salt Lake City, Utah My Role:

Several of my colleagues and I provided this proposal of the new native plant garden for Red Butte Botanical Gardens. Intensive research and analysis was done to provide a design that would accommodate the steep slope on the site and also provide ideas of different native plants that might do well to represent each of Utah’s four plant community types. The design proposed includes an ADA access road, two small plazas, and several pathways that meander through the different plant communities. This project provided me that opportunity to learn to work in a group environment. Together our group provided clear clean ideas for the garden. I used my skills in art and visuals to produce bold colored illustrative plans and details of the design.

This illustrative design takes the ideas from the two schematic plans to create functional and enjoyable spaces for visitors to Red Butte Garden. In each of the garden “rooms”, Utah native plants are displayed in ways that people can appreciate them and recognize possible applications for use in their own landscapes. The idea of altitudinal zonation helped to lead this design. The desert and semi desert areas are lowest and the mountain area is the highest with the foothill just below it. This will serve as an educational opportunity as visitors learn about the different native plant communities and where they are found in relation to each other. The main circulation path has a 5% slope to provide ADA and maintenance access to each of the garden rooms. The path begins in the desert garden Plant and Community Mountain progresses through each garden in altitudinal order, ending in the mountain garden. Secondary and tertiary Semi-desert Plant Community trails are available to allow people to better immerse themselves in the gardens and enjoy their beauty. All Plant Community shade structures, interpretive signage,Foothill and outlook areas are accessible by a 5% slope or less.

North Logan Pioneer Park

Masterplan for a new community heritage park in North Logan

North Logan Pioneer Park Location: North Logan, Utah My Role:

As part of the efforts by North Logan City to connect the public with the city’s hertiage, the city purchased a plot of land which contains one of the first homes ever constructed g Zoo Bridge Detail within the city’s limits. This project focused on producing a proposal where the land might be used as a public park. The design celebrates the pioneer home and provides the public with opportunities to experience the life-style lived by the people that first settled the area. As a personal project I learned to research and produce creative ideas that would enhance the value of the park. Features such as a farm animal petting zoo, barn theatre playground, a community farm and orahard, and a parvillion area help to invite visitors to come to the site and provide a spaceOutdoor where Furniture Detail the residents of North Logan can gather.

Temple Barn Community Center Masterplan for a native plant demonstration garde n

Temple Barn Community Center Location: Logan, Utah My Role:

The City of Logan plans to restore the old barn near the LDS temple where it once acted as a place of gathering and shelter for visitor’s livestock. It will now become a community center where residents might gather to learn and teach one another useful skills. This proposed landscape design provides an example to the public on how a residential landscape could be done using no turf and only hardy native plants while still maintaining a good asthetic quality. During this project I was able to learn how to develop construction documents from a drawn design. The study and research of native plants of the area also sparked my interest in learning how to plant a asthetically pleasing droubt tolerant planting design.

Granary District

Urban Redevelopment Project for Salt Lake City

Granary District Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

60 Second Observation Sketches

My Role:

At a much larger scale this urban redevelopment project focused on the redesign of the exsisting industrial area of Salt Lake City called the Granery District. The purpose of the project was to propose a way to help the Granery District become more valuable in introducing more areas for mixed use, commerical, and high density residential development. Starting as a group project and later transitioning into a more detailed and personal project, the project became enriched with detail filled with many creative ideas. The designs required a high level of research and study. On site observations were done to visualize the place and to better understand the site has with the surrounding landscape. I enjoyed creating several 3D models and visual graphics to better understand the unique elements of the design.

District Sequence of Spaces CONVENTION CENTER

The proposed plan for the future development of the Ganary District is greatly influenced by the sequence and pattern of spaces created between buildings found throughout the site. These larger spaces can also be defined as nodes. As seen in this section near the convention center, the placement of the main pedestrian pathways are governed by the flow of the space between the buildings and connect to larger open spaces or nodes to join together to create a main flow. Larger open spaces or node areas often create great areas for plazas and places for pedestrians to gather.

Major pedestrian pathways are connected by nodes. Along the major pathways are side connections to minor pedestrian pathways. Vehicular travel is more commonly used on larger roads that allow for more traffic. Smaller roads allow limited access to select vehicules only. MAJOR PEDESTRIAN MINOR PEDESTRIAN MAJOR ROAD MINOR ROAD

Building USes

CONVENTION CENTER

The type of use of buildings effects the design of pathways as well. The convention center requires easy flow and connection to its many entrances. The main pedestrian pathway curves along the side of the center to allow for easy access for visitors attending events. Circulation also flows around the landmarked sustainable building.

My Role:

During the summer of 2012 I was hired by the Landscape Architecture and Enviromental Planning department at USU to research, and propose a design for the new outdoor field studio and botanical garden. With the help of my former colleague, Andrew Noorlander we were able to produce the following proposed designs. The site design proposed included outdoor and indoor classroom areas, several different garden areas representing various types of design types, parking areas, and a research area.

Temple Square Now

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah My Role:

Learning how the grounds at Temple Square are designed, installed, and maintained has provided me an opportunity to see landscape architecture from a whole new perspective. By designing annual and perennial flower beds my knowledge of the plant palet hasn’t just grown, but my knowledge of how plants work together has become key in learning to produce a space that functions. Maintaining world class designed landscapes has also provided the opportunity to note what has worked well in each design and what has not.

When: April 2015 - Present Skills Used: Auto CAD, Google Sketchup, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, My muscles

About Me Winter Sports

Travelingng Hiking Why Landscape Architecture?

At a young age of five I gained a love for design and have loved it ever since. My love for design later led me to appreciate design found in nature and I quickly developed a passion for the outdoors and learning about the physical world. Throughout my life I have continuously sought after opportunities to grow in my knowledge of design and the natural environment. For 5 consecutive summers I worked at a boy scout camp called Camp Loll. The camp is sandwiched between Yellowstone and Teton National Parks. Living in the wilderness for several months each summer taught me to love wild things and appreciate space and form found in the natural world. During my years in college my interests drove me to pursue a degree in landscape architecture. I have found that landscape architecture gives me fulfillment by allowing me to combine my talents in design with my passion of nature through creation of quality outdoor spaces. In the future I hope to become I plan to become licensed and to one day own and manage my own design firm.
