I identified points likely to be often used at the fossil park and discovered a hierarchy. Some places cater to rest, while others activity. Three structures with hierarchical forms which suited the site.

Then I places those structures onto the site at select points. Giving each one of them different program. Some points had precious fossils to preserve. Others had multiple layers to dig and explore. Some sites merely have ideal views and were developed into spaces with shading for respite.

In hopes to cater to exploration, the structures string together across the site. Concealing some things and exposing others.

Across the banks, upon the hills, around the green, is where it fills.

Riverside Drive in Covington Kentucky, faces the heart of downtown Cincinnati to the North. It is elevated upon a slight hillside from the bank leading up to what is Riverside Drive. Just south on the other side of this street is the location for what is to be a proposed rowhouse.

The key concept is, although conventional orthogonal development of enclosure does buffer one from forces such as vision, sound, wind, and rain, it does not fully utilize the potential of reacting to many of these forces. By merely peeling up the roof plane and peeling outward the walls in a sense, perhaps screening, would allow you to still buffer from these original forces, yet utilize rain capturing capabilities, extra daylighting, and better views out of the building.

Original Massing Studies. Maximizing private garden space, Maximizing grade level garden courtyard quality, maximizing solar insolation. (Top to Bottom) I found that I wanted to merge the best parts of these ideas and utilize my peeling strategy to optimize the environmental factors that affected this site.

The final Massing came out to put the private spaces of the residence on the second third level as to respond to the 100 year flood plane so one would not be vacated from their residence in the case of a large flood. Public and Semi-Private with access from the ground levels. Featuring a solarium that acts as the heart of the building that spills down into the lower courtyard that is the green life of the residence.

The first floor is a courtyard which enters underneath the second floor. There is a stair access to the second floor public areas such as dining living and kitchen, as well as entrance to the library and lounge in the rear of the courtyard. The second level has a garage in the rear on grade as well as terraces featured setbacks in response to the sun angle. The third floor is strictly private bedrooms and a study for the use of the homeowners strictly. The roof level features the top floor of the solarium which spills out over a green wall that reaches down into the courtyard.

The Main features of this Residence is the rain collecting roofs, stacked solarium levels with exterior green wall, environmental screening, and a entry courtyard. The green wall features a channel that feeds all of the water collected by the roofs down through the greenery into a basin collecting water in the courtyard that produces a small pond. The excess rainwater collected is stored in an overflow rain collection tank so that the collected water may be used as the gray water needs of the residence.

As expressed in these sections, the solar penetration is optimized by skylights above every stair well as well as the setbacks of the floors. Flushing a stair well with lighting allows for deeper penetration of daylighting into the interior spaces of the building.

These details of the screening wall system are intended to display how the screening would block out a majority of the wind, noise, and vision from below, while allowing for solar penetration to continue.

The concept goes back to the peeling of the horizontal planes paired with a perforation of rectangular holes to create a screen that responds as such.

Centergross. The largest Fashion hub in Europe. It houses studios, workshops, designers, and visitors. The existing logistical building is made up of repeating similar buildings with various connections creating a span of one kilometer.

One key theme of this renovation strategy is focusing on the circulation from one end of the building to the other, as well as access to new developed rooftop terraces.

It is ideal to have a central spine that runs throughout the entire length of the building that feeds into all of the portions that come together. To do so, knocking out all walls and slabs in the way while leaving the existing structure and slabs in the very middle strip of the building in tact allows for the creation of this strong circulation piece.

This building is constantly active. Reacting to moments minute to minute and making moves Dependant on what needs to be done in a days work. Surrounding the concourse with glass covered in a electronic responsive film that responds with sensors based on activity in the area would allow the concourse to literally express and respond to activity in the building letting it express itself as a living entity. 51

With this radical creation of a single kilometer long corridor, the incorporation of a scooter lane for quicker long distance travel is an Eco-friendly alternative to conventional moving walkways while only requiring minimal storage and access. The isolation of the concourse by removing all excess slabs and walls creates an open framework which can be rented out for almost any type of studio or workshop responding to the ever changing demands of studio’s in the developing age of fashion.

The existing building has rooftop space that is not utilize and overlooked. The large amount of surface area on top of a very stable structural grid is an opportune moment for renovations.

Once the theme of the central corridor is established, creating varying spaces including rooftop solar gardens, rooftop water collectors, recreation spaces on the mezzanine terraces as well as a variety of other garden types on the mezzanine terraces is a possibility that has access from all over the building.

First Floor
This domicile explores the private and social spaces within a single dwelling, and brings them together. This artist’s residence is meant to be able to be a home as well as a space for one to bring guests and entertain them. In taking two masses, representing the private and social, and intersecting them, a space is able to transition from private to social.

Recognize Intersections
Elevate Topography
In order to generate the form for this tectonic project, I took all of the pathways, walkways, streets, and roads that when extended intersect with the site. I used where those lines fell on the site to create avenues of void in the form. Where these avenues intersected, I raised the topography so that while at an intersection of these major avenues one’s possibilities to explore is easily visible. 69

Once I laid out the general massing of the project, I began studying tectonics in forms. The tectonic elements created by a spherical subtraction of the mass created moments in frame, plane, and mass that appealed to my exploration in tectonic composition. 71

I took elements of the tectonic study and incorporated them into a final tectonic example. After the development of the tectonic composition I applied that to the masses that made up the whole design proposition.

I then began to dissect the project in section and created fluctuation in height in order to create spaces on top of the structure that are accessible via the altered typography and to create visual variance.

The final process is fully diving into the building and being able to access what these spaces created by the elements of the tectonic processes. In order to do this I went into one component and dissected it in order to get inside and develop these spaces in a human scale. 76

The spaces created were variable, but still lent a hint at what they wanted to be. Some more enclosed passage and sequential based spaces became galleries for exhibition.

Even within the same construct the language of the spaces developed was different because of the many dynamic ways the tectonic processes interacted. Other larger spaces with open area and lighting became areas for leisure or play.
