CONNECT TO BUILT ENVIRONMENT
THE DESIGN INITIATIVE FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A HEADQUARTERS FOR THE RIVERKEEPER NON-PROFIT THAT COULD SUSTAIN MAJOR OPERATIONS BY BECOMING THE MAIN HUB FOR PROFESSIONAL EVENTS IN THE AREA. THE LITERAL ENGAGEMENT WITH THE FOX RIVER PROVIDES SYMBOLISM EASILY IDENTIFIED BY PASSERBYS WITH A FORM PROVIDING VIEWS TO AND FROM THE SITE. FUNCTIONALLY, THIS ALLOWS EASY ACCESS FOR CLEAN-UP BOATS AND INTERACTIVE ENGAGEMENT FOR EDUCATIONAL TOURS. INFORMATIVE PLAQUES WILL BE INTEGRATED ALONG THE RIVER FRONT AND OUTDOOR SPACE FOR PUBLIC AWARENESS. THE SCULPTING OF THE OUTDOOR SPACE ALSO PROVIDES A NATURAL LANDSCAPE FOR LOCALS TO ENJOY AND GIVES GREATER PRESENCE TO THE ADJACENT HISTORICAL MUSEUM.

HOW CAN THE STRUCTURE AND MEMBRANE BE DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND STRONG SUN WIND, AND RAIN FOR OVER A YEAR? HOW CAN A TEMPORARY HOME NOT ONLY PROVIDE SHELTER, BUT ENCOURAGE REGULAR LIVING AND COMMUNITY? THE FORM IS DERIVED FROM STRUCTURAL, SPACIAL, AND NEEDS FOR ADJUSTABILITY. THE PRIMARY STRUCTURE IS CYLINDRICAL, WHICH CAN BE ADJUSTED AND FIXED AFTER INSTALLATION WITH THE SURPLUS OF LOCAL BAMBOO. FABRIC SHEATHING WITH REED COVERINGS FOR WINDOWS GIVES VERNACULAR AESTHETIC TO THE SHELTER AND PROVIDES THE FAMILY WITH THE FAMILIARITY OF TRADITIONAL DWELLINGS. OPERABLE UPPER AND LOWER COVERINGS ALLOW CONTROL OF SUNLIGHT AND VENTILATION. THE TEAR RESISTANCE FABRIC HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR MILITARY USE IN THE DESERT TO WITHSTAND EXTREME WEATHER WHILE THE LIGHT GLOSSINESS REFLECTS SUN ON ALL SIDES. A CUSTOM OPENING ABOVE MAY BE USED FOR RAIN COLLECTION AS WELL AS VENTILATION.

CONCEPT INSPIRATION
THE GOAL OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO CREATE AN ICONIC PIECE OF FORT COLLINS THAT DEFINES THE RICH CHARACTER AND HISTORY OF MASON STREET. THERE ARE FEW STREETS IN AMERICA THAT INCLUDE THE FIVE TYPES OF TRAFFIC THAT MAKES MASON STREET SO UNIQUE, WHICH IS WHY THE CONFIGURATION OF ANY OF THEM CANNOT DISREGARD THE INCLUSION OF ANOTHER. THE “MASON STREET LOCOMOTIVE CORRIDOR” PROPOSAL RESOLVES THE COMMUNITIES MOST CONCERNING ISSUES. SOLVING MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH ONE MAJOR DEVICE IS ACHIEVABLE AS WELL AS MOST PRACTICAL. REPEATING METAL ARCHES ARE ABLE TO DISRUPT THE HIGH DECIBELS TOO HARMFUL FOR HUMAN EAR, WHILE ALSO PREVENTING PEDESTRIANS FROM CROSSING UNSAFELY. CULTURE, TRADITION AND IDENTITY ARE IMPLEMENTED THROUGH THE CHARACTER DEFINING ELEMENTS THAT ARE REPEATED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE OF THE MASON STREET CORRIDOR. THROUGH THE STRATEGIES SHOWN, A COMFORTABLE OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT WILL INCLUDE EVERYONE FROM THE PEDESTRIAN CROSSING THE STREET TO THE DRIVER WAITING FOR THE TRAIN TO PASS. THE USAGE OF VARIOUS NATURAL SYSTEMS WORKING TOGETHER WILL NOT ONLY PREVENT POLLUTION, BUT ALSO PROVIDE MEANS TO A BETTER AND SAFER COMMUNITY.

SIZE AND LOCATION MAKES IT THE MAJOR MEDICAL SERVICE FOR THE SURROUNDING TOWNS IN THE REGION. THE GOAL OF LEED SILVER FOCUSED HEAVILY ON EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY IN OTHER CATEGORIES THAN ENERGY. MY ROLE WAS TO COORDINATE AND DELEGATE TASKS WITH CONSULTANTS AS WELL AS PUT TOGETHER THE MAJOR ARCHITECTURAL PORTIONS OF THE CREDIT REQUIREMENTS. APART FROM LEED, MUCH OF MY TIME WAS SPENT ASSISTING THE PROJECT MANAGER IN PROPOSAL REQUESTS AND ARCHITECTURAL CLARIFICATION DRAWINGS. SPECIFIC DESIGN WORK TASKED TO ME WAS PRIMARILY WITH INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SIGNAGE THROUGHOUT.

RURAL RETIREMENT PROJECT SUMMARY & INDIVIDUAL ROLES THIS PROJECT IS FOR A PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN YAKIMA VALLEY, WASHINGTON. THE CLIENT PURCHASED THE PROPERTY FOR THE VINEYARD SURROUND AND PERFECT VIEWS TO THE TWIN PEAKS. THE MAJOR CHALLENGE WAS KEEPING LINES OF SIGHT TO THE BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS WHILE MAINTAINING PRIVACY AND SAFETY. MY MAJOR ROLE WAS BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING. THIS INCLUDED CREATING PARAMETRIC COMPONENTS NOT ONLY FOR ARCHITECTURAL NEEDS, BUT FOR STRUCTURAL AS WELL. INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR RENDERINGS WERE HEAVILY REQUIRED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT, WHICH GREATLY HELPED GUIDE DESIGN DECISIONS, LANDSCAPING, AND FINISH SELECTION. THE STRUCTURAL CONSULTANT FOR THIS PROJECT HAD PROVIDED HAND DRAWN INFORMATION WHICH WERE THEN MODELED INTO AUTODESK REVIT. EXACT COMPONENTS BASED ON THE SPECIFICATION PROVIDED WERE CREATED TO INSURE NO OTHER SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS WERE LIABLE TO CONFLICT.

THROUGH MODELING WE WERE ABLE TO BETTER COMMUNICATE TO THE CLIENT THE DETAILING REQUIRED FOR THE PLANAR ILLUSIONS DESIRED IN THEIR HOME.

THROUGH EMAIL, I WAS ABLE TO GET CONNECTED TO THE ORIGINAL ARTIST, BEING GUIDED THROUGH HIS PROCESS AND GIVEN TIPS ON HOW HE CREATED HIS ORIGINAL. AFTER MIMICKING HIS IN-FIELD TECHNIQUE OF THE WATERCOLOR HE KINDLY COMMENTED, “YOU HAVE CAPTURED THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE SUNSHINE, AND IT’S FULL OF LIFE. GOOD WORK!”
