From the very start, the vision has been to promote and elevate the image of Africa as a proud and passionate African. Over the years what has stood out for me is how diverse and special every visit to Africa is and for that very reason, the present and future of DAME Africa was born. We are committed to contributing significantly to travel and tourism in Africa and believe in the untapped potential of this sector. Throughout this journey, my vision is to collaborate with others, elevate the African image and help build the Africa I believe in starting with Ghana. I am delighted that you have picked up this edition of DAME Africa Magazine! In our last edition, we pushed our content beyond Accra and explored what different parts of Ghana have to offer. This time around, we had the opportunity to spend some time in the Northern Region and bring our experience to you through this magazine. The best way for me to describe Tamale is - simply a breath of fresh air and if you’re yet to experience it, we hope this magazine will give you the push you need towards an unforgettable experience.

The Year Of Return was particularly huge for Ghana by all stamdards. By highlighting Ghana on the map, the traction ballooned much to the delight of all who have a special place for the Motherland in their hearts. COFFEE DATES There were whispers on Ghanaian socials about Ghanaian females not being hip to the lure of coffee dates. Although friendly banter, it should be categorically stated that the premise has very little truth value primarily because of the barrage of cafeterias and coffee houses in the capital, many of which are picture-made for close-knit meetings and bonding sessions with a mug as the referee.

KUKUN CAFÉ & BAR Generally, Kukun is an inspiring all-purpose space where one most definitely gets from A to B in their proposed agenda. The general consensus is that a space which exudes that much serenity has become a hotspot. Nonetheless, the influx of individuals does nothing to adulterate the tranquility that’s inherent in the space. The Café & Bar section of the space also makes provision for company of any kind, hence, with a carefully crafted arsenal of beverages and drinks, personal conversations are given the green light.

Baa & Bean, with its peculiar spelling, will forever ring a bell in the minds of followers of Ghanaian contemporary culture. Baa & Bean is an offshoot of the renowned Tea Baa, and with two branches in two of Accra’s hot spots (East Legon & Cantonments) it easily complements the popularity of the erstwhile Tea Baa. Since Baa and Bean spaces trump Tea Baa’s in size, the resident aura allows for low-toned conversations and endless cups of special lemon and ginger green tea in the company of flawless décor and aesthetic brilliance. THEIA COFFEE HOUSE Another unobtrusive coffee spot in the capital. Theia Coffee house is all about flavours, organic ingredients and artisan vibes. A homey feel created by the last of the said characteristics allows guests to settle into a good rhythm and breathe. A bit of free advice: Theia’s vineyard-esque compound is a good spot to get some good shots of you and your date.

ORIENTAL PATISSERIE While Oriental is a full-fledged restaurant, it makes this list because of its potent coffee and shisha selection, a testament to the Lebanese food culture which makes up its roots. EL PADRINO LOUNGE AND RESTAURANT Relatively new on the block, El Padrino presents a crowded plate of aesthetic supremacy, conceptual brilliance, elegance, exclusivity, masterful delicacies and a couple more kind words that are very much warranted. Walking into the space is like being welcomed into the embrace of greatness. Photos of Al Pacino, Ice Cube, Elon Musk and a host of other ‘executive’ figures propped up on each flank of the walkway is an early indication of the high-end spot you have just walked in. Away from the impressively stocked smoking room, the main dining hall is a hallmark of dining excellence. Bottle service is apt for the environment and the meal inspirations cut across cultures.

SAI WINE & CHAMPAGNE CAFE Sai, in the famous Labone Courtyard, is more than boozy bubbles and wild cocktails. Everyone loves the space for myriad reasons. It is cosy with just the right blend of semi-formal and formal seating styles, soft and prominent lighting, which is why we declare it as one of Accra’s most popular multipurpose eateries. For what it’s worth, Sai brings the sexy pairing of wine and cheese to life with their exciting collection of wine and champagne in the tuck. Prosecco and Parmesan is a favourite used to line the walls of the stomach and when it gets to the mains, a compact range of exotic meaty and seafood meals complements the slow-tempo mood just fine for a couple. LA CHAUMIERE A taste of Parisian romance in Accra from the old guard. Given that France, and Paris, is heralded as one of the ultimate intimate spots in the world, it is only right that when you are debating an affectionate meal setting in Accra, La Chaumiere has to be in that conversation. The cross-cultural references are heavy in the menu and the ambience barometer is never off. You are guaranteed a plum time at any sitting at La Chaumiere because the barrage of options does not affect any of the output negatively.

It may sound ridiculous but just about every resident in East Legon and its adjoining suburbs can add their voices to a Koffee Lounge testimonial. I dare say the coverage could even spread beyond these areas. Analysis of each input will see praises of portion sizes running through each of them. So vicious is the traffic for Koffee Lounge’s food that there are two outlets in the same vicinity. Koffee Lounge has built a reputation of serving portions for 1 that could potentially feed 2 or even 3 comfortably, with taste still of a high standard. The reward for giving the people exactly what they want is continuous patronization and being one of the first alternatives on everyone’s dinein or take-out list. Frequenters will not hesitate to tell you that a rice or noodle-based dish is the best-seller at Koffee Lounge. To jazz it up, the myriad proteins, sauces and condiments (schezwan, shrimp, assorted meat, barbecue sauces etc) that are prefixed against each meal present a dynamic feel to a menu that in all honesty, can be exhausted by regular diners because Koffee Lounge remains one of the most budget-friendly joints Accra has ever seen. Jollof Rice: The West African Treasure

lthough highly unlikely, if you are reading this and you are clueless about the prowess of jollof rice, here is something for perspective: Ghana jollof vs Nigerian jollof has been an internet trend for the last decade. Jollof rice has a pretty patchy history or origination train. The most reliable of sources have its place of origin in the Senegambia region of West Africa. However, it is ironic to note that Senegal and Gambia are often neglected in the ‘jollof wars’ conversation. Ghana and Nigeria are often tagged as the premier heralds of this mouthwatering local dish because of the content built around the dish from their local base, the coverage it receives from

the global media and basically the attraction Ghana and Nigeria receive on a world stage as two of the most marketable African countries. Jollof festivals and brand-sponsored jollof wars (or competitions) take place in Ghana and in the Ghanaian communities of Washington DC and London, just to name a few. This is a testament to the prowess of jollof and the lasting impression it has on its benefactors. The dish has garnered a reputation for being for everyone and in Accra, at least, jollof can be found in the plushest of local and continental restaurants, in the food stall on that street corner, in the food truck parked by the gas station or in mum’s kitchen. One will wonder what makes the

dish special? Truly, the juice in jollof lies in the subjective and flexible nature of the cooking process. This is why there are variations in jollof from country to country and even from one household to another. Basically, the fusion of rice and stew makes up jollof. Taking it a notch higher, there are a number of condiments that unlock more faces of jollof rice. Shito (peppered sauce), meats of any kind, fish, Ghana salad, plantains, eggs, spaghetti are all known additions to the final presentation of jollof. The choice is undeniably yours.

RERUN THE YEAR OF RETURN? Run it back is all everyone is saying about the Year of Return. For the longest time, culture crusaders had bemoaned the efficiency of structures that are supposed to be heralding the elements of Ghanaian culture in a palanquin for all to see. The general consensus has been that Ghana, and Africa to a larger extent, is just sitting on a mine of invaluable culture and heritage that could be a game-changer in tourism circles for the long-term benefit of our economies. Given that the ‘hidden gem’ tag that had been associated with African countries for a while was beginning to get played out, it was high time the continent made the rest of the world pay attention to its gemstones someway, somehow.

tep forward the Year of Return in 2019. Ghana bookmarked 2019 as the year in which it formally opened its doors to members of the diaspora to reconnect with their roots. Interestingly, 2019 also marked 400 years since the first slave ship from Africa docked in Jamestown, Virginia. There appeared to be no better time for anyone of the black race to embark on such a spiritual journey back to where it all began. The buzz surrounding the idea of a spiritual return ballooned much to the delight of all culture and tourism crusaders in the country. This was an indication of the wealth of attraction Africa as a continent has if it consistently markets itself efficiently. Celebrities, travel enthusiasts and every black person with an internet connection contributed to Ghana being ranked 4th in the places to visit for 2019, and for the most part, everything played out just the way it was supposed to. The hospitality industry was the biggest winner in this whole tourism activation ploy, with hotels, restaurants, airlines, tourist centres and service providers seeing engagement figures going through the roof. Great times for the country. Beyond the spiritual benefits to be accrued on this journey of renaissance, the world was to know that Ghana is quite the party destination during the festive period of December. The symposia, talks, exhibitions, explorations and tours were immensely rejuvenating nonetheless, ‘December in Ghana’ was billed as a major crowd-puller.

From the barrage of all-encompassing festivals right through to the cocktail of themed parties, Ghana and Accra, in particular, lived up to the billing of the city that was suggested to never have a period of shut-eye. It was particularly pleasing to see how the public and private sectors of the Ghanaian tourism bubble fused their powers to produce a spectacular show on the whole. The result of the coalition was reflected in the Ghanaian economy receiving a $1.9-billion-dollar boost, making the Year of Return the most successful tourism initiative the country has seen in recent times. Ideally, every cultural crusader, economic analyst and socialite will like to see the momentum from 2019’s Year of Return seep into Ghana’s calendar of events for 2020 given the initiative’s undeniable success. Beyond The Return; an activation with an outright financial calling and taste has been tabled as a sequel to the Year of Return. How successful do you expect it to be? interesting facts about Tamale

Tamale is the only city in the northern region of Ghana and is widely regarded as the capital of the region. The city has a population of just over 350,000 people.

The religion practiced by the majority of its inhabitants is Islam which is proudly evidenced and supported by the many mosques across the city.

Tamale is home to the most fertile lands in the whole of Ghana and it is, therefore, no surprise that she plays a dominant role in providing much of the country’s produce and animal products. Its agricultural activities have positioned the city as one of the fastest-growing economies in West Africa.

Despite its rural nature and the humble living standards, Tamale is one of the cleanest cities in Ghana and has roads that may put some of the richer cities in West Africa to shame.

hen you think of an African safari, Ghana may not be the first place that comes to mind. However, the quest to establish what Ghana doesn’t have to offer its holidaymakers does not stop at the mention of wildlife safaris. A flight to Tamale, followed by a relaxing two and a half hour drive to Larabanga will bring you to the grand gates of Mole National Park. Courtesy of Zaina Lodge, the DAME Africa team were treated to the full Safari experience over two fun-filled days. Safari truck and two amazing rangers in tow, and off we went to explore the wildlife of Ghana. There are so many special aspects that fuse together throughout the park

to truly awaken each of your senses. First the smell. The strong yet calming scent of fresh, growing mint leaves is euphoric. It set the tone for a breathtaking journey through the forest. Next on the list of jaw-dropping features is the main event - the wildlife. Mole National Park has the widest range of wildlife in Ghana. And, what makes the experience particularly magical is the almost 5000 km² of parkland allows the animals to roam freely in their natural habitat. Not a single species is brought to Mole but every so often new species may migrate to the region, freely making a new home for themselves. Many of its visitors eagerly search through the park hoping to experience elephants in the wild. In addition to elephants, you will see a variety

of wildlife antelope, warthogs, bushbucks, monkeys, baboons and different species of birds. Given that the park does not currently have any predatory animals, you can ditch the truck and enjoy the safari by foot, getting up close and personal with any of the less camerashy creatures. If you’re lucky enough to have this experience with Zaina Lodge, you will even get a lovely coffee break with the tastiest biscuits in a little treehouse, while you wait for elephants to show up for their own drink from a nearby body of water. Mole National Park is an amazing experience to share with the whole family, friends and even groups of strangers united in awe of the gift of the north.

Larabanga Mosque

L One attributing factor to the cultural distinctions between the south and north of Ghana is religion. Whilst Christianity appears to be practised to a higher degree in the south, Islam is most prevalent in the North.

Larabanga Mosque dates back to the 15th Century and is so iconic that the mosque is named after the village in which it stands Larabanga in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region. From reeds and mud, the initial structure was put up by a Moorish trader who tried to emulate traditional Sudanese architecture. During our visit to the mosque, we were told that the location of the mosque was chosen by the long throw of a spear and the decision that wherever the spear was found to have landed, that is where the mosque will stand.

Over the years, what is noted as the first mosque and religious centre in the whole of Ghana has gone on to be regarded as the Mecca of West Africa. Amidst the periodic maintenance procedures, the mosque retains its original form which is indeed monumental to the architectural culture of northern Ghana and parts of Northern Africa and the sanctity of the building itself. Laranbanga Mosque has so much of a strong pull that it is often noted as an object of tourism in the north. When you visit the mosque, one of the locals will be your guide for the time you are there and will tell you about the history of the mosques, dos and don’t and give you a little insight into the local community. There is also an opportunity to donate as little or as much cash as you have to support the community. The preservation of the structure after all these years should be lauded. It is clear that the prioritization of religion amongst Ghanaians, leading them to be sacrosanct in relation to anything connected to their faith has been beneficial to a structure like Larabanga mosque.

SHEA BUTTER

From Shea trees to households worldwide

During our time in the north, we were treated to a Shea butter experience, brought to us by, yes you’ve guessed it - Zaina Lodge! The team offered us the chance to visit a nearby village to learn about how shea butter is made and of course, we took it. Shea butter is a fatty extract that actually comes from the nuts of a Shea fruit which grows on Shea trees which are prominent in the northern region of Ghana. The production of the popular creamy product found in many homes around the world is quite laborious and is undetaken mostly by women in the north. We wondered why this labour intense task was carried out almost exclusively by women and like most things concerning gender divides, that’s just the way it is. Shea butter is known as the women’s gold in West Africa, not just because it is loved by women but also because the production of shea butter provides a viable source of income and commercial activity for women of all ages in West Africa. From the cracking of the shea nut to the boiling of the paste, a representative of the village, walked us through the entire process. Our group sat attentively in a lady’s tiny shack while the lesson was given. Her granddaughter then stepped in for what some of us had been waiting for - the chance to purchase some of the purest shea butter available. As we don’t want to steal their thunder, we won’t go into the process of making shea butter here and hope you get the chance to learn from the masters. What we would like to say, again, is the process of making this divine product isn’t an easy one so please do source responsibly and trade fairly to help our hard-working communities across Africa.

VIEWS FROM ABURI With the construction of the N4 highway, Aburi is about 15 minutes from Legon. Commuters will be the first to tell you that the zig-zag road leading to the mountainous town of Aburi is the most fun part of the journey. However, on the shoulder of one of the ‘zags’ is an outer-lane-likebus-stop. This particular demarcation presents a prop for individuals to have a panoramic view of most parts of low-lying Accra.

PADMORE LIBRARY George Padmore is a well-known name in PanAfricanism. As a radical activist in the movement of anti-imperialism, Padmore’s quest for liberation for all African states adored him to the leaders of the African colonies, Nkrumah most notably, who opened the doors of Ghana to him eternally.
