“Sometimes we think architecture is like a poem. Minimum of words, for a maximum of sense. Leading to a certain beauty. In architecture, the spaces are the words. Minimum, to give the maximum.”

1. THE ARCHIPELAGO CITY School: ENSA Paris La Vilette, 5th year studio project Instructor: Didier Rebois, Hugo Bruley Location: Kaiserebersdorf, Vienna, Austria Project awarded with highest honours

During an international workshop carried out with ENSAPLV and TU Wien students, the municipality of Vienna invited us to reflect on the urban and ecological future of several peripheral territories of the city. Kaiserebersdorf, a strategic territory located south-east of the city, was one of them. Kaiserebersdorf, marked by the oxymoron centrality / periphery, is a paradoxical territory. On the one hand, it’s a political and physical periphery. On the other hand, it’s a major agricultural and economic centre for the country, hosting the largest horticultural area of the country. The municipality of Vienna offered us to work on a strategic plot of the Urban Development Plan, but I decided during the process to wide my area of reflection and intervention in order to consolidate economic, social and ecological links in a multi-scalar way. The Archipelago Project consists of two intervention areas: the north area and the south area. The first, Simmeringer Haide, is a highly specific territory formed by 160 farms, consolidating a microcosm. It is a hyper-productive village street, being the most important horticultural area in the country. The second area is a productive oasis, encompassed by the generic patchwork city.

The project deals with the physical reality of the place, as well as the long-term territorial political project. Firstly, on a macro scale, the project offers physical links more compatible with climate change, prioritizing transport by bicycle or walking, as well by public transportation. Second, programmatic links (if the agro-park in the south is an open and public figure accessible to all, the northern zone remains a picturesque space, attractive to visitors and walkers) are reinforced between the two interventions. Finally, the link is also economic: short circuits (agricultural production, housing, workplaces, activities) operate between the two environments. The southern zone hosts a market in its inhabited agro-park which markets the production of the northern zone to local inhabitants. This project evokes the will to conserve the economic specificities and morphologies of the place (respect for intensive agricultural activity, and the parcel organization), while bringing programmatic innovations. The uses, as well as the forms of production of the place may evolve over time, while respecting the strong morphological specificities. Different archipelagos bring a new way of inhabiting the territory, while consolidating existing potentials

THE COOPERATIVE COLLECTIVE PRIVATE

STEEL WOOD CONCRETE BRICKS

On a smaller scale, the reflection continues with an inhabited wooden structure, socially organized in the form of a living cooperative. The building consists of a variety of types, ranging from studios to 4-bedroom duplexes. The base hosts artist residences .The most valued space, the penthouse, is intended for use by the cooperative, with a kitchen and common spaces. The structural solution offers a mixture of a wooden frame with a reinforced concrete core. The birds of the park and elsewhere inhabit the facade through details in the burnt wood siding.

2. PROJET À SAINT-JORIOZ School: ENSA Grenoble, 3rd year studio project Instructor: Benoit Adeline Location: Saint-Jorioz, France Project selected for the final year intersutio exhibition

Four distinct parameters shape this project: the proposed program, the natural context, the material specificities of the massive stone and the uses already present on site. The program, established by the client, consists of an art center, consisting of an exhibition hall, an artist’s studio, a restaurant, archives, an office, and technical spaces. The garden, previously an accessory element in the program provided, becomes a central element of the project. The program emerges in architectural types already present on site: massive and contextual stereotomic volumes, and a public pontoon. The natural context in which the project is born is dazzling. We are located on the edge of Lake Annecy, and the mountains are omnipresent and the woodlands are striking. In order to preserve all the trees present on site, the built volumes fit into the existing clearings. No trees will be destroyed or added to the project. The public walkway depicts the different environments it crosses: wooded area, sculpture garden, swamp, lake. Finally, the architectural space is orchestrated by the material specificities of massive stone. The project follows a strict framework of 210 x 90 cm, dimensions of the typical block of neighboring quarries. The massive 60 cm thick walls benefit from the thermal and climatic characteristics of the stone. The intrinsic beauty of massive stone is enough to make the project. This project claims a deep dialogue with the existing.

3. PRESERVING GREY’S SCHOOL OF ART School: Robert Gordon University, 3rd year studio project Instructor: Neil Lamb, Conrad Wiedermann Location: Aberdeen, Scotland, UK Project selected for the final semester exhibition

When Inaugurated in 1967, the building was described as a milestone in the development of the arts in the North and an “act of faith in the future” (The Press and Journal 1967). Looking and trying to understand Gray’s School of Art is closely easy to understand that it is a unique piece of architecture for Scotland and the United Kingdom. Gray’s School of Art is the clear materialisation of the modernist movement, and the hope of a generation of thinkers and artists. The order, rigidity of the steel structure and the subtle blend of materials used to be omnipresent when visiting the building for the first time. But unfortunately changes throughout the history of the building have made the idea and wishes of the architect get lost. My intention is to adapt the building to his new functions, creating a sustainable building, while respecting the strong architectural elements already presents. That is why

I propose a return to the original idea: simple spaces, creating strong links with the landscape, and using a limited palette of materials, but able to thrill visitors. The building is a dialogue between different functions. In 3000 sqm in which coexist spaces with different qualities and needs, as The Northem Centre of Culture and Design, a Conference Centre, Creative Starter Units, Accommodations and the Exhibition Space. The exhibition space becomes the centre of the building, its gravitational point, creating links between the north public space and the courtyard. The exhibition space is a flexible space that can be adapted to different Arts and Functions. Inside the rigid elements of the structure become the antithesis of flexible panels, which move in the north / south direction. The main materials used are the same as at the time by Michael Shewan: Glass, Steel, Bricks and Concrete.

The program is composed by 4 different functions: The creative starter units, The Northem Centre of Culture and Design, hotel accommodations and the exhibition space and conference centre. The exhibition space becomes the centre of the space, linking the north and the south of the building. The exhibition space links the people with the other spaces of the building, and the green spaces. In order to create a more sustainable building, the central entrance disappears, and become two different entrances.

5. SEMI-COLLECTIVE HOUSING IN CRÉMIEU School: ENSA Grenoble, 2nd year studio project Instructor: Paul-Emmanuel Loiret Location: Crémieu, France Work selected for semester exhibitions The city of Crémieu was once a former trade route between Lyon and Italy. Materiality is omnipresent and gives it its identity. The ramparts of the old town are still present and reveal the medieval character of its urban fabric. Following the in-depth study of the historic habitats of Crémieu, our project reflection focused on the design of an intermediate habitat in a historic urban context. The project is designed as a microcosm, composed of dwellings of different typologies and common spaces, crossed by flows connecting it to the networks of the historic city. “Ecumenal” research which combines an in-depth study of the place, people and ecology: Matrix axis: histories of architecture, popular arts and traditions, toponymy, beliefs ... RESEARCH ON FILADELFIA, PARAGUAYAN CHACO School: ENSA La Villette, 4th year studio project Instructor: Marc Bourdier, Claudio Secci Location: Filadelfia, Paraguay Work exhibited and published The city of Filadelfia was founded in 1930 by Mennonite settlers, in an extreme climate context. Today, this city is experiencing major changes and future challenges, both in political terms (transition from cooperative management of the city to municipalization), social (coexistence of Mennonite, indigenous and “Latinas” cultures), economic (consolidation as a major economic center in the region), demographic (exponential growth in the number of inhabitants), physical (accelerated city expansion), and climatic (water scarcity in the territory). x
