Production: the act of producing; creation; manufacture It is this definition from which my design comes from: the similarity of producing a performance in a theater to producing something in a factory. The performance space and all the production spaces in this theater bear the utilitarian look of a space for manufacture. They lack any decoration so as to not get in the way of pre-show preparations and to not distract the audience from the performance itself. The most basic materials (concrete, glass, metal, and wood) are familiar to visitors of the space and will not attract their focus. The shape of the building comes from the mechanical gear and is symbolic of how the production crew must function smoothly as a whole to present that day's spectacle. The centrally located performance space relates to the rotational axis of the gear and is symbolic of how every aspect of the building revolves around the performance.

This project is an abstraction of train tracks, which have inspired the design of this bookstore located near a railway and station.

Two metal clad, structural beams run the

length of the building which are reminiscent of the steel train tracks. On the southern facade, a faceted pattern has been created to represent the rock base.

Drawing from the

wooden rail ties, wood finishes are used on floors and ceilings. The angles created by the south facade are continued to the interior where they influence the cashier's counter and some of the bookshelves.

Inflated Canopy

Illinois School of Architecture Make Series 1 Winner Team Members: Yu-Lun "Nico" Hsu, Theradej "Top" Nasueb, Andrew Smith, Kristina Werner, and myself The Inflated Canopy is a balloon based structure that provides shelter, spectacle, and a sense of place in the courtyard. Currently, the courtyard goes unused throughout the year but, as per the competition requirements, the installation will serve the required purpose of activating the space. Our team purposely chose this concept because of its playful nature and its bright colors which are expected to draw the attention of passersby. With a budget of $1800, we are able to inflate the canopy for four separate ocassions during the spring semester with each inflation lasted about one week. The balloons are placed inside a closed net allowing external stimuli to manipulate the form of the structure. The Inflated Canopy responds to events like fluctuating temperatures, strong winds, and human interaction.

Undulating Studio Inspired by the movement of dance, I chose the wave to be the concept that shaped my dance studio. That wave has also influenced the circulation by having users moved to the furthest ends of the wave in each studio. The second concept was a gradient angled perpendicular to the axis on which the wave was drawn. That gradient determined how light would come into the building leading the southeastern side of the studios to feel more enclosed but with light filtering in from above. These concepts set out to create a non-uniform space to encourage the creativity of choreographers.

Concept: Tilling

Concept: Tilling + Epicycles

Concept: Musical Proportions

With the size being found in the distance between the edge of the largest oval and the furthest of the arches that supports the dome, this circle is repeated trifold which could be symbolic in this Catholic church of the Holy Trinity.

The diameter of these smaller circles is set by the distance between the two arches (light blue lines) that form pendentives for the dome. These circles form connections between columns (blue dots), the center of the space, and the pier-like protrusions opposite the actual piers.

There are several ratios in this church that are also found in music: 7:5 (septiminal tritone), 3:4 (perfect fourth), 3:2 (perfect fifth), and 3:1 (perfect twelfth). One circle represents one unit in the ratios.

The four non-central circles are also epicycles around the central circle. These four circles were only arcs in the original plan and indicate the only epicycles that are tangent to the largest oval.

The 7:5 is the ratio between the long and short axes. 3:4 and 3:2 correspond (on the long and short axes respectively) to the number in the central space versus the total on the extremeties. And 3:2 and 3:1 correspond (again respective to the long and short axes) to the number on the interior compared to the number on one side external of the central space.
