Blue Library Buzz Summer is cruising by, but there is still time to plan a trip to the great outdoors. Late summer usually offers us some of the best weather, too. Whether you plan to hike, bike, paddle or camp, the Lakeside Library has several guide books to help you get the most out of your adventure. Here are a few books especially helpful if you plan to stay closer to home. Trails of the Wild Selkirks South of the Canadian Border by Dennis Nicholls is a great resource for hiking. There are numerous trails and information such as levels of difficulty, number of miles, trail features, maps, etc. Also included are “Family Fun” hikes, as well as those which comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines. Mountain Biking Spokane Coeur d’ Alene by Martin Potucek includes detailed descriptions of many biking trails, also with maps, lengths of rides, and levels of difficulty. Paddle Routes of the Inland Northwest by Rich Landers and Dan Hansen detail floating trips around our area. Again, there is much useful information so you can plan a safe and fun paddling adventure. Audiobooks make a car ride more enjoyable, too. And don’t forget a book for the beach, or reading in the tent with a flashlight. Enjoy your summer! It’s always too short. Sally

Stevens County Fire District 1 Puts First Tender Into Service

The first of Fire District 1’s new water tenders went into service on August 4th. at 4pm. Personnel from the District gathered at Station 1, accompanied by Fire Commissioner Skip Wells, as Fire Chief Mike Bucy explained the “Wetting Ceremony” in putting a new rig into service. The “wetting” of a new rig goes back to the days of horse-drawn fire apparatus. Firefighters would manually pull the old vehicle out, wash (or wet) the new apparatus before pushing it into its place in the firehouse. District 1 personnel recreated that tradition by washing the vehicle and “pushing” it into its proper place at Station 1. Two more water tenders will go into service this week—one at the Stonelodge/Tum Tum station and one at the Springdale station. Crews have been training extensively on them since their arrival in mid-July. After some additional training takes place, the Washington ratings bureau will be called into re-rate the District’s rural fire protection. Chief Bucy says a better rating will eventually mean a savings on fire insurance.

SHARP AUTO & BOAT REPAIR

The 2011 Clayton community Fair Royalty has just returned from their visit to the Penticton, B.C. Using Exercise to Lose and Maintain Your Weight-4

If you eat junk food you get a junk body!~Lamar Gant~ Stretching definitely has a place in an exercise program; however, static stretching before doing either cardio or resistance training is counterproductive and may even lead to injury. It is the purpose of static stretching to increase the length of the muscle range of motion. It does this by relaxing the joint that the muscle surrounds. Since this is a case, it makes no sense to be static stretching before you begin an intense set of interval training or any explosive activity such as lifting weights. The joint receptors are confused and because the joint is relaxed, it is not as tight as it should be when called upon to do intense activities. Start each session with a general overall body warmup, followed by a series of dynamic stretching or active range of motion movements prior to the actual session. This correctly warms the body up for the exercises that follow. Next follows the actual exercises and then the

static stretching as part of the cool down. In reality, there is not a whole lot of difference between exercising for weight loss and exercising for weight management. Both must be kept up on a consistent basis otherwise, all the gains that you’ve made will be lost. The best exercise program that you will ever find is going to be the one that you stick with day after day, week after week, and year after year. It is a never-ending process; you have to be active in order to be physically fit. You cannot leave out the nutritional component of weight management. A proper nutritional diet greatly enhances your ability to lose and then maintain your weight. Always keep in mind that the best exercise program in the world will quickly be sabotaged by sloppy eating and drinking habits. Stay strong, and remain passionately committed to your hearts chosen path. By Danny M. O’Dell, MA. CSCS*D

Homes for Heroes Program Launches in Spokane

SPOKANE, WA -- A network of local real estate professionals is helping to make buying a home more affordable for those who serve the community. The Homes for Heroes program was recently launched in the Spokane area, giving large rebates to local heroes who are buying or selling a home. Those who qualify include military personnel, teachers, firefighters, law enforcement personnel and health care workers. The program offers savings, which vary based upon the price of the home, but every individual receives a donation from the participating realtor equal to 25 percent of the real estate commission. This rebate is used to offset the buyer or seller’s closing costs. Significant discounts are also avail-

able through the affiliated mortgage lenders, closing companies, home inspectors and more. The combined savings add up to thousands of dollars! Homes for Heroes was launched in Minnesota, shortly after the 9/11 tragedy in order to honor those who serve their communities. Since that time, they have grown and established local affiliate partners in over 30 states. They offer the largest and most extensive savings program in real estate. The Spokane network also has more than a dozen “Friends of Heroes”, local businesses that support the program and have agreed to offer additional discounts to local Heroes who use the program. The realtor affiliates at Exit Real Estate have already sold a few homes under

Elodea Update

A special meeting occurred on August 11th to learn more and make some decisions about options available for the reduction of the severe outbreak of Elodea that Lake Spokane is experiencing this year. It is now understood that the combination of cooler water temperatures from the massive snowpack and no drawdown created ideal growing conditions for this particular plant. Avista, due to their FERC licensing agreement, has an obligation to manage public access sites for safety and usability, and have been surveying the areas they are responsible for, having a plan in place to treat those areas. These areas include the Nine Mile Resort, Suncrest boat launch, Willow Bay boat launch, West Shore boat launch, Lakeshore boat launch, and Lake Ridge Park boat launch.

this program and say it’s important for our area. “We are excited to bring this program to Spokane, and to give back to the people who work every day to make Spokane a great place to live. Too often these heroes are not recognized for their contributions, and this is an exciting way to say thanks,” said Exit broker LeRoy Pilant. A community unveiling of this program is set for Monday, September 5th, 2011 at 10:00 am. The ribbon-cutting event will be held at Spokane City Hall, 808 W Spokane Falls Blvd. in downtown Spokane. For additional information on the Spokane Homes for Heroes program, contact Darla Pilant at 509-270-0782, or visit www.SpokaneHomesForHeroes.com

Seeing a need and working toward a common goal, the Lake Spokane Association built a coalition of homeowners’ associations to tackle the problem in a mutually beneficial way. With combined funds coming from the LSA, as well as from the affected neighborhood associations, and in conjunction with Avista, a plan has been implemented to treat an area over 10 acres to provide a safe boating lane from the Nine Mile Resort to the open areas downriver. The LSA works hard to find effective solutions to lake-wide problems when they arise, and thanks to the quick responses of our many homeowners groups, as well as Avista, there should be an herbicide application within the next 10 days. As always, if you have any further questions, please contact us at info@lakespokaneassociation.org.

BACK TO SCHOOL “GEAR UP DAY!”

Back to School “Gear Up Day” is sponsored by Suncrest Family Worship Center Free School Supplies, Free Haircuts, Free sports physicals. Can you believe it? It’s mid-August, and school is just around the corner! Maybe you find yourself a bit like me wondering how the summer has blown by so fast. Nevertheless it has, and with school just three weeks away, we’re here to serve you and your family by helping you get the essentials you need to start the school year right! On August 28 from 3 to 7 PM (in the Outpost Mall parking lot) we will be giving away FREE school supplies, providing FREE haircuts and offering FREE sports physicals for children and teenagers in the Nine Mile Falls School District. If one, or all, of those services would be a benefit to your family, then here’s what you need to know: The school supplies can be picked up anytime between 3 and 7 PM, just show up! For the haircuts, we’ll have three local cosmetologists on hand. We request that children come with a parent or legal guardian and please come with hair that is freshly washed without any

products in it (such as gel or hairspray). The sports physicals will be provided by the Lake Spokane Community Clinic on August 26 from 1 – 4 pm. We have 10 scholarships to give out, and if we can assist you with one please call us at 466-6330 for more information about scheduling an appointment. One of the qualities I think most of us appreciate about Jesus was that He ministered to the whole person—meaning He dealt with both the spiritual needs and the practical needs of people. He taught passionately about the salvation He had come to bring, but He also provided bread and fish to the multitudes when their stomachs grew hungry. As a local church we’re excited about following Jesus’ lead, and we want you to know that we are thinking about you and your family this school year. We live in a great community, we serve a great God, and we greatly look forward to connecting with you on Sunday, August 28 from 3 to 7 pm. Hope to see soon, Pastor Bart Orth

Happy Anniversary Dr. Sok Story • Therese Lally Photo • Dana Michie

It’s been just over a year since Jon Sok, (pronounced “sock”) Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD), started working at the N.E Washington Health Programs Lake Spokane Community Dental Clinic located in Suncrest. Originally from Massachusetts, the son of a military man, Jon Sok, first worked as a millwright apprentice. He came to the Pacific Northwest to attend Ricks College where he earned his Associates Degree. (Ricks College is now known as Brigham Young University-Idaho). While attending Ricks College, Jon Sok signed up for the Army Reserve Officer Training (R.O.T.C) Program. He also joined the Idaho Army National Guard as a combat engineer. He later became a combat medic with the National Guard and then attended Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho where he earned his undergraduate degree. Jon Sok returned to the east coast to earn his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The N.E Washington Health Programs Lake Spokane Community Dental Clinic is affiliated with the University of Washington - School of Dentistry (UWSOD) where Dr. Sok serves as a clinical instructor/preceptor to UWSOD first and fourth year students via web cast and the distant learning program. Located at 5852 Blackstone Way – Suite 100, the non-profit clinic construction was supported by funding awarded to N.E. Washington Health Programs through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Lake Spokane Clinic opened its doors on July 20th, 2010 offering improved access

Serving the entire community, the clinic is now contracted with most major insurance carriers and provides full service dental care including: preventive exams, cleanings, implants, oral surgery, crowns, bridges, root canals, cosmetic procedures, dental emergencies, treatment for gum disease and jaw pain. Orthodontic screening is provided by Dr. Joshua Johnson, Doctor of Dental Surgery, Master of Science (DDS, MS). To sum things up about the past year, Dr. Sok said, “We really have an incredible staff here and we’ve received an incredible amount of support from the community, so much so that we will be expanding our days of operation in September.” Dr. Sok and his wife, Alison, have four children. When not working or teaching in the clinic, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, participating in outdoor sports, and serving as a Boy Scouts of America leader. Citizen, soldier, dentist, college instructor, scout leader, husband, and father, Dr. Sok is definitely a formidable community leader. We congratulate him on a very successful first year serving Suncrest and surrounding areas.

Editors Desk ... Dana R. Michie

Editor / Publisher danam@lakespokanemedia.com

Geek Talk It may not came as a surprise to some, but I am a confessed technology geek. I really like gadgets. My wife Suzy has been needing a computer of her own. Going to the closest big box technology store, we began our search. Knowing what she needed in a computer, we started comparing models and prices.Being a while since I had shopped for a computer, I was first surprised by the small selection of desk top models that are available. With a large

selection of laptops and netbooks to choose from though, they seem to be the current computer style of choice. I did notice that many different brands of tablets are taking quite a lot of area on the sales floor. These tablets, with their simplified operating systems and touch screens are plenty of computer for what most people use their home computers for. We bought a laptop this time, but I have a feeling our next computer purchase will be a tablet.
