Fill the Boot for MDA On Saturday, September 17 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Stevens County Fire District 1 will have boots in hand as they kick-off their annual Fill-the-Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Firefighters will be stationed at the Suncrest Fire Station, Loon Lake 4 Corners, and the North Division Y collecting money to benefit MDA. Last year they raised an impressive $6,142 through Fill-the-Boot. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA Summer Camp, support groups and local clinics. Fill-the-Boot is a 57-year-old tradition that began as the brainchild of two Boston firefighters. In 1954 Butch Snyder and Jim Gigsby, along with fellow Boston firefighters wanted to help so they grabbed their boots and headed out into the community with the hope that people would fill those boots with donations. Since then firefighters have collected more than $400 million. For more information about Fill-the-Boot or other MDA programs please contact Darcey Hill at 509-325-3747 or dallen@mdausa.org.

SCCAT/COP Shop/RESOURCE CENTER UnderSheriff Webb will be at Lakeside COP SHOP September 21st from 2:00-7:00 pm to issue concealed weapons permits or to answer your questions. The first day of school was a fun day for the S.C.C.A.T. members who helped keep the traffic moving smoothly in the parking lot at Lake Spokane Elementary School. Thanks to all of the parents who greeted us with a friendly smile. S.C.C.A.T. member, Rodney Wells, continues to collect items for soldiers in Afghanistan. He sorts, boxes and mails the items. Some of the items needed are: roll-on deodorant, disposable razors, baby wipes, Chapstick, soaps, tee shirts or military tee shirts, socks, cream for lips, 3-in-1 laundry sheets, gum, hard candy (no chocolate during warmer weather), cookies, Tootsie Rolls, peanut butter crackers, energy bars, sunflower seeds, nuts, Crystal Lite and lemonade mixes. Anything flammable, toxic, corrosive, or in aerosol form is not permitted. The USPS provides Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes which are free, however, cash is also needed to help cover the postage. Your donations can be dropped off at the COP Shop.

S.C.C.A.T. volunteers for the School Assistance Program are busy at Lakeside High School during football and volleyball season. Our volunteers enjoy working and watching the games. Thanks to Carol Killman and Cynthia Pasteur for donating lotions, soaps and personal items which were taken to the Family Support Center. Trained staff and volunteers at FSC are ready to help victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse and a 24/7 Help Line is available by calling (509) 684-6139. Services offered are: 24 hour Crisis Line, safe shelter, Crisis Intervention, Information and Referral, Advocacy, Community Education and Assistance with Court Orders. The Family Support Center will be offering free training on preventing child sex abuse. Edward Jones Says Plan for Retirement This Week and Every Week October 16 through 22 is National Save for Retirement Week

Contributing to a 401(k) or other employee-sponsored retirement plan, opening an IRA and rebalancing one’s investment portfolio regularly are but three ways in which investors can ring in National Save for Retirement Week, says Jim Hayes, an Edward Jones Financial Advisor in Suncrest. National Save for Retirement Week runs October 16 through 22. The event is designed to promote the benefits of saving for retirement and to encourage workers to take full advantage of their employersponsored retirement plans. The percentage of workers not at all confident about having enough money for a comfortable retirement grew from 22 percent in 2010 to 27 percent in 2011, the highest level measured in the 21 years of the Retirement Confidence Survey, sponsored by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Additionally, the traditional pension plan has been losing popularity among US companies. Yet another reason that saving for retirement is a serious matter. On the other hand, defined contribution plans, such

as the 401(k), have gained in popularity. During National Save for Retirement Week, and throughout the year, Edward Jones offers the following advice: Contribute as much as you can afford to a 401(k) or other tax-advantaged employer-sponsored plan such as a 403(b) or 457(b). Spread your 401(k) dollars among the available investments in a way that reflects your risk tolerance and time horizon. Open and contribute regularly to an IRA. A traditional IRA can grow on a tax-deferred basis, and a Roth IRA grows tax-free, provided you’ve had your account for at least five years and don’t begin taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2. Rebalance your investment portfolio regularly. During the recent recession, many new retirees faced difficulties when they were forced to tap into investment portfolios whose value had dropped significantly. Periodically review and rebalance your investments. Edward Jones provides financial services for individual investors in the United

Blood Pressure, Daily Walking and the Connection with Being Overweight

If you are overweight, then daily walking may not dramatically decrease your blood pressure. The healthy benefits that walking has on the blood vessels of a normal weight person may be lost on the overweight individual. In general terms this means that your arteries are not widening and the blood flow is not improved with walking, thus your blood pressure may not change to more optimum numbers. Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern conducted a study that analyzed over 35,000 Caucasian men and women. Each person in the study had regular checkups that included measurements of their Body Mass Index (BMI), and readings of their systolic blood pressure each visit. Additionally these participants exercised at each visit so their fitness levels could be assessed. The results may give anyone who is overweight a reason to reassess their situation. The results were published in the American Heart Journal and they revealed that a normal weight person had an average

of 12 mmHg lower systolic blood pressure than one who was obese. The blood pressure of the fittest was only 6 mmHg lower than for those who were least fit. Still, that wasn’t all they found. After analyzing the blood pressure, BMI, and fitness data of the participants, they found that physical fitness was an important element in lowering blood pressure in those of a normal weight person. However, it was not as effective of a component in those who were overweight. Interestingly enough, many in this overweight group were physically fit yet their blood pressure was still high. The take-home message here certainly indicates that diet alone may not help lower your blood pressure. The combination of losing weight, by engaging in regular exercise, and calorie counting will need to be in place before you begin to notice the beneficial effects of exercise on lowering your blood pressure. Stay strong, and remain passionately committed to your heart’s chosen path.

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns. ~George Eliot I totally agree with Ms. Eliot, autumn is delicious. I’ve often felt it was more like the start of the year than January. It’s when we send children off to pre-school or college, homeschoolers reboot their efforts, and the air has that crisp feel to it as we head out to the first high school football game. September is a time of excitement and anticipation. We feel it at the Lakeside Library and relish the opportunity to help get you in the school mode. The most obvious thing to find at the library is books. Over the years we have acquired multiple copies of required reading material such as The Giver by Lois Lowry, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Marie Remarque to mention a few. For our younger readers, we have new Early Literacy kits, Easy Readers and beginning chapter books from favorite authors such as Mary Pope Osborne (Magic Tree House) and Barbara Park (Junie B. Jones). Upper elementary through teens will find their favorite series including Warriors, by Erin Hunter, Harry Potter and Twilight. But most importantly, if you can’t find it, ask us, we will do our best to track it down. Beyond the tangible material lies a wealth of online resources. On our website, you will find two tabs: “Research” and “Homework Help.” Research area lists databases you may access remotely with you library card number. PROQUEST is one such database where you can search a full collection of journals, magazines and newspapers on any subject. Homework Help lists 11 kid-friendly sites with everything from simple search engines to a site to search for colleges and universities. Need some help brushing up on skills or studying for your GRE? At LearningExpressLibrary.com you can access skill practice tests from the Elementary level up through Career Placement exams. Just click on the Take Practice Tests Online link from our homepage and start studying. Start the “New Year” off right by visiting the Lakeside Library.

In 2005 it was made known that 4000 acres of Washington State Department of Natural Resource Trust lands in the southern part of Stevens County would be going up for sale to possibly build a huge housing development. Many phone calls and meetings took place between then Stevens County Commissioner Tony Delgado, Senator Bob Morton and Representative Bob Sump, State Lands Commissioner Doug Southerland and Darrell Olson of Washington Land Exchange who arranges the sale of trust lands. The idea of setting aside a parcel of land so the local community could form a park and recreation area was discussed. In October 2007 State Lands Commissioner Doug Southerland informed the Stevens County Commissioners that a parcel of land consisting of 40 acres had been set aside for the Lake Spokane community. The caveat was that there would be three years given to pay for the parcel and the cost could be as high as $5,000.00 per acre. After seeking input from neighboring counties it was found that forming a park district could negate the need to pay for the land. By forming the district and having the voters approve a separate taxing district and then electing a board of commissioners, the citizens of our area now have a fifty-year lease on a 40-acre parcel of property that will become a community park that will be free for all to enjoy.

Church Serves Community Volunteers from Suncrest Family Worship Center Paint Cornerstone Baptist Church

Story • Therese Lally Photos • Dana Michie There was quite a buzz going on last week at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Nine Mile Falls. With the help of several members from the Suncrest Family Worship Center, Cornerstone Baptist Church in Nine Mile received a brand new paint job on the entire exterior of the church building. The project took the better part of four days. The first day included preparations of the exterior and grounds, power washing, and scraping away of old dried paint. The second day covered masking, taping, and some priming of the façade. On the third day, the rollers and brushes were brought out for the actual painting and some trim work. The fourth and final day included detailed work and touch ups. The building was completed and in perfect condition for the church members and guests to admire and enjoy prior to their Sunday morning worship services. Pastor Bart Orth has been the lead pastor at Suncrest Family Worship Center for three years. He is a long-time resident of Suncrest. The son of a military man, he moved to the area when he was in the sixth grade. Not only did he attend the area schools as a student but eventually he became a teacher at Lakeside High School. It was then that he felt the stirring of God and believed he was called to serve the Lord more completely. In 2003, he decided to make ministry his full time vocation. In his words, “This community has really shaped my life in a positive way. I just love giving back and serving the Lord while at the same time serving the community.” Pastor Orth learned that his community sister church was in need of painting. He also realized he had the professional resources within the Assembly of God body of believers to assist in the painting of the Baptist church. Through a collab-

Orth continued, “This was a partnership of two local church bodies. We share a unity in serving our Lord Jesus Christ. I want to show that unity and to serve in a practical way. The generosity of all the volunteers demonstrates the practical way we can serve.” Pastor Barry Bishop has been the lead pastor for Cornerstone Baptist Church for just about two months. He answered the recent pastor call after the church lost their long-time pastor, Bill Hutton. Pastor Bishop is originally from Texas. He and his family have been busy with adjusting to the transition of the move as well as to the “changing of the guard” so to speak. Painting the church building was one of the needs he identified during his transition. Fortunately, as he gratefully put it, “God has provided!” Pastor Bishop continued, “Volunteers from our church provided lunches to the paint crew. It was an incredible effort by all.” Both pastors have a common mission: To spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to those around them. Together these two community leaders collaborated in a paint project but collectively their greatest collaboration is showing the community the love of the Lord.

LSA Rapid Response The Elodea weed epidemic that has been taking over the upper portions of Lake Spokane reached a crescendo in August, with calls flooding in and onsite visits by LSA board members confirming that something needed to be done. A narrowing of the river channel between the Nine Mile Resort and Suncrest had boats running dangerously close to one another, and homeowners down stream were spending countless hours with pitch forks and rakes, moving trailer loads of loose weeds from their docks and lifts. Seeing an urgent need, the LSA stepped in to respond. A coalition was built between homeowners, various lake and park associations, local businesses, and Avista to make an impact. An area was designated as a critical point, from the Lakeridge Park area of Suncrest to the turn at Nine Mile, which had an unusually high density of the weed and was contributing to an unsafe lake. This coalition funded Inland Water Pest Control and Consulting to come out and treat the area. After treatment, measurements concluded 11 total acres were treated with this con-

sortium. A week later, those same calls from homeowners and surveys by LSA board members confirmed that a vast area had been treated extremely effectively. Residents in the Suncrest and West Shore neighborhoods saw immediate relief, and the traffic from the Nine Mile Resort area was able to spread out as normal, making the lake a safe and enjoyable area to use. This result would never have been possible without the support of the Lakeridge Park Association, Spokane Custom Remodeling, Avista, and the LSA, all of which donated funds to the treatment. In the future, the LSA hopes to continue this type of relationship and community action, being a steward and a focus point for the lake’s future. When situations such as the carp die-off of 2010, or the elodea outbreak this year arise, we hope that the members of the LSA can see a real value in their $15 annual donation, and those of you who haven’t become members will join us. Together we can make a difference in the health, safety, and enjoyment of Lake Spokane.

Parks & Recreation

A few years back, the Lake Spokane Community was in threat of losing one of its best resources, the large amount of Department of Natural Resources managed land. For many, the plentiful and easy access to DNR land was an attraction to moving to this community. I can personally testify that my property adjoins DNR land and was a factor when considering a piece of land to purchase. The types of outdoor activities for which these lands are used range from mountain biking to target practice. Many people from the community, as well as tourists, use the lands. With the Lakeside Middle School cafeteria full, a DNR representative outlined the plan to trade the local property to a land broker who would eventually turn it into housing developments. It was because of this land swap that a group of community members, with the support of county

commissioner Tony Delgado, formed a Parks and Recreation District. Through the formation of the Parks and Recreation District the community members have a voice. Since its formation the elected Parks and Recreation commissioners have been hard at work. This last Saturday, during a ribbon cutting ceremony, Phil Aune, Chairman of the Lake Spokane Parks and Recreation District, accepted a 50 year lease on behalf of the community. The lease is for DNR property located on Villier Rd. Now that our community has the property for a park, the challenge begins. In order to transform the 40 acres of pine trees and scrub brush into a park, it is going to take money. The group that takes on the tax campaign has rough road ahead of them. As Phill Aune and the rest of the Parks and Recreation commissions have shown, perseverance is the key!

Williams Valley Grange News Dear Editor: I am the Master of Williams Valley Grange #452, a subordinate chapter of America’s oldest farm-based fraternal organization. As the Master of our Grange, I am writing this to inform your paper that at our regular meeting on Saturday, September 10, 2011 we adopted the following statement regarding the tenth anniversary of 9/11. We members of Williams Valley Grange #452 in remembrance of the tragic events of 09/11/2001, acknowledge the extraordinary courage and resolute determination of those citizens involved in the rescue, relief and rehabilitation of our fellow countrymen who were terrorized that day. As a tribute to the victims as well as the first responders, friends, families, and fellow countrymen who are all impacted in so many ways by this violent act, we would appreciate your cooperation in recognizing this event through your media. Cordially yours, Ralph K. Allen, Jr. Master, Williams Valley Grange 452

I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it. Voltaire

Give Credit Where It’s Due Details, Details The recent Chamber of Commerce article speaks to a re-election for our community’s honorary mayor position. It incorrectly states that the dog, “Reuben” has been re-elected. This honorary position is held by the individual or animal that raises the most funds that pay for our annual fireworks display, held at Lakeside Middle School each July 4th. All political correctness aside, our previous winner was our very own Rocky Fortner, who on his own, raised the most funds AND matched them penny for penny, for the largest single donation towards this prestigious event. The dog, and other opponents not limited to horses and cats joined collectively to try and financially beat Rocky - which they did by a few dollars. That wasn’t part of the game plan for this “oneon-one” race. Rocky represented our community well, appearing at area grand openings, attending other community Chamber meets and greets, Founder’s Day events and others, all the while drumming up business, ideas and support for Lake Spokane. Didn’t see the dog, horses or cats at any events - guessing they had other pressing engagements. Let’s give credit where credit is due - our 2011 honorary mayor is Rocky Fortner.
