URBAN HOUSING PROJECT
In this design project, my main focus was creating an affordable housing alternative to urban residential development. The priority was to build walk up units to explore a low-cost high-density housing project. The main concept for this project was to create a semi-private environment to allow for more interaction between residents by cultivating certain spaces for that purpose. In this project, Boston’s building code was the foundation for technical decisions such a the egress stair distance, travel distance from the farthest point in each unit, and total number and measurements of private and shared stairs.

In addition to the several Boston Public Libraries, the main focus of this project was a full sized conceptualized library for Chinatown, Boston. This additional was to be placed on site with an existing parking lot and some local stores. Therefore, it was a priority to investigate the site’s context including the community, surrounding green space, and direct pedestrian access. Not only was this project another addition, but an environment that would serve and benefit the surrounding community. In my library, I designed a ‘plus program’ where the ground floor design is centered around designated spaces for the community.

In approaching this design, as my precedent study, I focused on OMA’s Seattle Public Library. To optimize program into the design, I followed OMA’s diagrammatic process, and began to associate certain colors with moods and atmospheres. In order to do this, I applied certain colors to programs. Once I had decided on the colors as programmatic interactions, I developed a massing model to associate certain areas with their colors through scale figures.
