Introduction A smart city is one that leverages the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) for the purpose of improving the overall quality of a city, especially urban services. A smart city also aims to improve the performance of transportation and utilities so that the consumption of available resources is reduced. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for people that live there. Let’s take a look at several smart cities across the United States.

Denver, Colorado Denver has smart city initiatives aimed at mitigating traffic issues, improving air quality, and modernizing the infrastructure, among other objectives. The city has plans to use more electric vehicles, improve pedestrian safety, and establish a freight system that enables trucks to communicate. Denver has a partnership with Panasonic for a project called Peùa Station NEXT that’s a mixeduse facility. It’s expected to include office, outdoor, retail, residential, and dining spaces. 03

New York, New York With more than 8 million residents and unique challenges, the Mayor’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer, the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, and the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency work collaboratively to advance smart city initiatives. In coordination with other agencies, they address issues associated with an increasing population. They also oversee efforts concerning electrical lighting management, smart water, and waste.


San Francisco, California Add a little bit of body texSan Francisco, with a population of more than 880,000 residents, has implemented the use of wireless sensors to improve parking management. In fact, there are numerous initiatives that aim to reduce transit problems. Companies like Lyft and Uber contribute to the success of programs related to smart city initiatives. 05


Washington, DC Washington, DC has a population of approximately 700,000 residents. The Lab@DC is responsible for refining municipal policies and advancing smart initiatives. They have implemented police officer body cameras, fought against homelessness, implemented rent programs, and launched litter initiatives. Lab@DC consists of operation experts and data scientists. Policymakers are also involved, especially as it relates to evaluating existing practices and implementing new policies.

Other cities in the United States that are actively engaged in smart city initiatives include Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Seattle.
